It would really help to have some dates...even if guesses...say, if you are 20...then you add 20-25 years for each genearation...

Guessing won't do much to help you... also...don't build yourself any brick walls. If you limit yourself to one surname spelling, one area of Calif (or even one state)...you may be building a brick wall that will keep you from ever finding ancestor's. I have been at this genealogy stuff for over 40 years... learned a few things along the way.
I am posting this Alvia Bowles...as he may connect...you need to remember...your ancestor may not have given out the census information...the person he boarded with might have guessed at how to spell the name, where he was born, & even his age.

The following I would say is definately your great grandfather..He was born in OH, and was a blacksmith... in 1880 his name was misspelled (or was it?). You never know on census.

1880 United States Federal Census
about Alvia Bowles
Name: Alvia Bowles
Home in 1880: Township 4, Shasta, California
Age: 66
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1814
Birthplace: Ohio
Relation to Head of Household: Something other than a direct relationship (Other)
Father's birthplace: Pennsylvania
Mother's birthplace: Pennsylvania
Neighbors: View others on page
Occupation: Blacksmith
Marital Status: Widower
Race: White
Gender: Male

in 1870

1870 United States Federal Census
about Alvy Boles
Name: Alvy Boles
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1812
Age in 1870: 58
Birthplace: Ohio
Home in 1870: Big Valley, Siskiyou, California
Race: White
Gender: Male
Value of real estate: View image
Post Office: Yreka
Household Members: Name Age
Alvy Boles 58

Don't find him in 1860..he's there in 1850

1850 United States Federal Census
about Alva Bowles
Name: Alva Bowles
Age: 37
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1813
Birth Place: Ohio
Gender: Male
Home in 1850(City,County,State): Calaveras District, Calaveras, California
Family Number: 3308
Household Members: Name Age
Ira Seymore 35
R A Smith 23
Alva Bowles 37

It does not show him with any family though.

There is no 1890 US census available, and Alva Boles of any spelling does not come up on census for 1900.

If the above was your great grandpa, then his wife & children did not stay with him while he was out looking for gold. in 1880 he is a widdower..so no family, unless he married between 1880 and 1900.
Marge

I don't think so. I never say never. My ancestor, Albin Edwards married Minnie Marie Boles. They were my great greandparents. Minnie's parents were William Thomas & Julia Ann Whittaker Boles from Martinsville, IN. Minnie moved to Calif with her son, Wm Edwards (b 1897 - my grandfather) and his family. My mom was the first one born in Calif...those prior born in IN.
Marge

My grandmother did not know where her Father was born. He was married to Lillie Mae Skaggs, born December 19, 1888, possibly in Fayette County, WV. Edgar's father was James H. Boles born 1851 and died 1940. He was married to Sarah Hudson, born 1855 and died 1942. These dates all came from gravestones.

I can go back to about 1850 on some of my relatives. The name Ed O'Bryant is prevelant in my family. My grandfather, Thomas Liebel O'Bryant had a brother named Ed O'Bryant.

Glad to share any information if you feel it would be helpful. Thanks.

He was born in England and had left a wife and four children in the middle west before going to San Francisco area.

My mother-in-law's mother was a Boles in Cooper, TX.
Do you know anything about her brothers or sisters? My grandmother was Bonnie Ora Boles. Her father was Robert Craven Boles (Who had at one time changed his name from the spelling Bowles, I heard it was because of a family dispute) I think his father was Ora Boles son of Wesley Boles. They are also from Tennesse and moved to Arkansas. It is told my great grandfather was full blooded Cherokee and by looking at my family there is no doubt it was true. Do any of these names sound familar? Please email me and let me know. Would love to compare notes.
Thanks, Mandy

They moved next to Henderson County Texas.

1rst Regt. Cherokee Mounted Volunteers CSA.
Stand Watie, Watt Christie, James Bowls, John Bowls,George Dredful Water,T.James Taylor, John Ross. Remember these names, they will appear again in the application below!

BOLES/CADENHEAD APPLICATION FOR MEMBERSHIP, CHEROKEE NATION 1896
All persons named in this application are members of one large extended family, related by blood and marriage. This information was received from the National Archives in Fort Worth, Texas. It consisted of 42 legal size photocopied pages of documents relating to the applications and appeal of denied citizenship. Denial was based on the fact that James Boles' name was not on one of the official Cherokee Census rolls taken in 1835, 1848, 1851 or 1852 and that James Boles never resided in Indian Territory.
------------------------------------------------------------
1. Summary of Lawyers Brief submitted at Tahlequah, Cherokee Nation, IT, August 1896.

Before the Honorable The Dawes Commission sitting at Venita, IT in the hearing for Indian citizenship in the Cases of: Levi C. Boles, J. Robert Boles, Minerva Elizabeth Boles, John M. Stripling, Polly Ann Stripling, Isaac Caddenhead, Mary [Berry] Ann Hightower, Tonie L. Anderson, Ellen O. Gilliland, W. R. Owen, Martha L. Brown, Joe E. Caddenhead, Lem Caddenhead and Kittie Ross versus the Cherokee Nation.

The claimants submitted their 13 respective applications verified under oath and affidavits of the following named witnesses in support of their claim: George Dread Water, Watt Christie, T. J. Taylor, Doug Weber, John Ross. All witnesses were recognized citizens of the Cherokee Nation.

The plaintiffs submitted positive proof of Cherokee Indian blood through sworn affidavits and testimony of witnesses known to be citizens of the Cherokee tribe. If the names of his blood ancestors were not found on the census rolls, it is because they probably hid from the Census takers fearing that census enrollment would bring about their removal from their homes in North Carolina, Tennessee, Alabama and Georgia. It is well know that a large number (up to 2,000 individuals) evaded enrollment by hiding in the mountains and forests. The brief cited other instances when tribal officials and various government commissions granted citizenship to others whose ancestors' names were not on the rolls. It pointed out that there were no rules forbidding admission unless a blood ancestors' name is found on the rolls of 1835, 1848, 1851 and 1852. That the claimants have submitted proof positive of Cherokee Indian blood. That their petition was granted by a previous Cherokee National Council without hesitancy and the previous Principal Chief approved the act. Therefore the Dawes Commission should not recede from the established precedents of the Cherokee Nation, should be governed by the form of evidence submitted which is clearly within the provisions of law of the US and should approve the citizenship applications. Respectfully submitted by Rasmus and Ghormley, Attorneys for the Plaintiffs.

Before the Dawes Commission, Cherokee Nation Response dated August 27, 1896.

Now comes respondent, S. H. Mayes, Principal Chief of the Cherokee Nations and demurs said application on the grounds . . . that James Boles through whom the petitioners claim to derive their right to citizenship is not now, and has not been a citizen of the Cherokee Nation, since the removal of said Nation, west to the IT as at present located and defined; that his name does not appear on any of the authenticated rolls of said Nation; that neither he nor any of his ancestors now reside, or ever have resided in the Cherokee Nation and Indian Territory.

Demurrer and Answer filed September 9, 1896.
------------
2. Summaries from printed Citizenship Application forms where handwritten information filled in blank areas of the form.

Levi C. Boles states that he is the son of William Boles and grandson of James Boles who he firmly believes were Cherokee Indians by blood and acknowledged members of the Cherokee tribe of Indians and from whom he derived his Cherokee blood. Age of petitioner is 62 years old. His post office address is Campbell, IT. His family consists of: James R. Boles, male, 27, son; Tonie L. Anderson, female, 23, daughter, married; J. L. Boles, male, 18, son. Signed and sworn at Tahlequah, IT on November 28, 1894. Polly Ann Stripling. Daughter of William Boles, granddaughter of James Boles. Age 70. Post Office: Campbell IT.
Boles/Bowles/TN/Grooms

Hello, I am looking for any information on Sallie Boles or William Grooms. I don't have much. l think Sallie was born around 1855. She and William Grooms had a daughter, Emma Love Grooms. Emma married Bernhardt Leopold (Benjamin) Schneider in Memphis, TN in 1900. One census list Sallie as being born in TN, her father in VA and her mother in MS. I would welcome any information or leads.

Anna Bolds/Ignatius Boles, Nelson Ccounty, KY

I have added several wills to my site at www6.ewebcity.com/lronan. They
are:
Ignatius Boles, Nelson County, KY
Stanislaus Melton, Nelson County, KY
James Brown, Nelson County, KY
William Brown, Nelson County, KY.
Now for the questions. I have Ignatius Boles and Catherine Gough as
parents to my
Anna Bolds who married Thomas French 1798, Nelson County KY (Marriage
Bond and Consent Book of Nelson County, 1785-1800). The will I have
posted if that of Ignatius Boles and he mentions wife Caty. He wrote
his will in 1817 and it was proved in 1817. In this will, daughter Anna
Bolds (spelling) is mentioned. If my Anna was married 19 years earlier,
I doubt that this is her father!!!! This really throws a wrench in my
genealogy. I know of another researcher that has documented evidence of
an Anna Bolds m. to a McBride, and I expect this is the father of this
Anna, which leaves me without parents for mine!! Help someone please,
my tree doth drop its leaves.
Cherokee Boles

Sound like if there is a connection, potentially Alice could be a either a sibling or cousin...they would've been about 6 years apart in age. I'm sure she probably HAD siblings, but no idea how many. Boles was a very common name Cherokee name (originally English) and I think began integrating itself around the Revolutionary War (I hear tale of a Chief John Boles, who was half white/half Cherokee...apparently he was back and forth between the east and west a lot, and fathered a few kids here and there). From what I've seen, I believe there were English Boles, Cherokee Boles, and many with an integration of the two. I don't feel that there was much white integration in my family up until the 1900's...that is a key difference between me and many of the people I talk to in these message boards. Are you a subscriber to the Boles/Bowles list?

P.S. My direct email is gserrels@equantek.com

Cherokee Boles

You are the first person I have heard from so far that has a Boles relative that is so closely related and may be full-blooded. Do you know dates or places of birth? I believe that my grandmother was born in KY but they moved back and forth from there to TN so much that it's impossible to be sure at this point. I do know she was born in either 1869 or 1870.

I have been talking to someone who has a great-aunt that fits the name, age & birthplace of Alice, and she knows that there is Indian ancestry there, but not how much (this makes me doubt that this is my family...Alice was unquestionably Cherokee to some large degree...I would think that would be evident in direct descendants like it is in my family).

I know so little about my great-grandmother, and I haven't really been able to find any information to conclusively link her to any other names. I will take the information you gave me and see if anything surfaces. Thank you...feel free to email me!
