I probably can't help much however I am looking for any of my fathers relatives. His name is Charles Bolger and he was born in Waterford to Mary and Edward Bolger. I know he was one of eight and I have an uncle Tom, aunts; Francis,Phil, Lori and Theresa and thats all I know. One of my uncles went to Australia and three of my Aunts went to New York as did my father. As I was estranged from my father I am now looking for that side of my family I guess because I was the most like him and would love to know some of them. Good luck with your search as well. Thank-you, Margaret Bolger.

Hello PJ - Nice to hear from you. Thanks - I'll check it out but I've come across several Philip Bolgers around that time with death records, but none of them matched the profile.
I've come across several items of interest - Philip's DCM, for starters, and Chris's war medals. I've got Philip's gladstone kit bag from the AIF, and a photograph of the family with Philip in naval uniform. I got a copy of his court martial in 1917 which is very interesting. Would you kindly contact me directly by email as I'd like your opinion on a related issue. Regards, Brendan

Our information seems to match. We are descendants of Eleanor Bolger Donnelly. All I can tell you is Mr. Bolger (we did not know his first name) was a ship's chandler out of Dublin and emmigrated to Ontario Canada. He bought land for logging in Canada and UP Michigan. He sold the Michigan land in his lifetime rather than one of his ships. He eventually settled near London, Ontario, Canada. He had four sons (names unknown) and 2 daughters. Eleanor, who you mentioned, and Josephine who married someone in St. Louis, MO, USA. I hope this helps!

Hi there, I am looking for Mr. Bolger who was a ship's chandler out of Dublin, Ireland. There is some tought they came originally from County Carlow. He immigrated to Canada and purchased land near Londontown and also U.P. Michigan for logging. He had four sons (names unknown) and two daughters. One daughter Josephine was married to someone in St. Louis and we lost track of that relation. The daughter we know is Eleanor Bolger born 1818 in Carlow, Ireland and married William Donnelly about 1839 in Warwick, Lambton, Ontario. Any possible information is most appreciated.

Your story brings back some memories of my husbands grandmother. Esther Bolger who was born and lived in Fall River MA. She would speak at times about getting together with cousin Ray. I tried to get information how the connection was...but I couldn't follow it. I was told by the nurses within hours of dying she kept them company talking about all the times she used to get together and play with her cousins. The nurses mentioned to me that one was Ray Bolger. There would have been no other reason for them to know it other than her talking about it on her death bed.
I too am trying to find the connection.

Therese,
I just saw your post and hope you're still doing genealogy. Yes, I've seen the Kilkenny ones, and an Edward Bolger involved with the Famine Relief Organization office in The Rower, Kilkenny. I recently found an Edward Bolger in the Tithe Applotment Books in Old Ross, County Wexford, which is where his daughter Anastacia lived with her husband James Carty until they and children removed to America in the 1850s. I believe there was another Bolger fam. in Wisc, but probably not close relatives if at all. I found no e-mail address for you with your posting, but if you want to contact me about this, I'm: anneign@q.com.
Thanks for answering..sorry I didn't find it 10 years ago!
Ann Ignacio

There may be a connection, but likely distant as mine came over to US before 1850.
I'm trying to narrow their home to the Old Ross area, so try aiming for the parish of Cushinstown, just east of New Ross.
Ann Ignacio

Thank you for your response. I don't believe there is any family connection. Philip arrived in Melbourne in 1916 on a Royal Navy ship. At that time, there was certainly no relation of his living in Australia. Your research may be aided by the Irish census of 1911 which is available online at http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/
You will need to have some details of places in Ireland where your ancestors originated. He served with the King Liverpool Regiment and was killed in France on 1st July 1916.
Does anyone have any information about Thomas and his family that they would be willing to share with me?
He was the son of Joseph and Mary Bolger and attended the local school here in Eastham but I haven't had much luck tracing any other information about the family.
Any information would be appreciated to help add a little bit more to the stories of the young men who are remembered in the village.
Thanks
Tracey

I know he claimed to have arrived her in 1858 and that he briefly served in the Union Army in the Civil War but his pob birth eludes me.

Kilkenny seems to be the most common county of origin for the name but that hasn't been much help.
I can confirm that my family are "now" Bolgers, I have traced my family for some years and indeed during the 1800s we are listed as bulgers and boulgers.
This was simply down to the person saying there name to the priest or registra and because litteracy was generally poor they spelt it phonecialy with these results.
When tracing the Bolgers also bear in mind the records are mostly written in lattin so someone known as james may be babtised and therefore recorded as Guilemus Or even easier is Edward would of been Edwardus.

I am trying to find information on my Great Grandmother, her name was Ellen Bolger possibly from the Waterford area born in 1887. She then married George Stiff in Cardiff, Wales on 19 January 1908, her father on the marriage certificate was John Bolger who was deceased at the time of her marrying George. I believe she died sometime after August 1945 and before September 1950, as she was in her sons wedding photo on 2 July 1945 and aunt never new her who was born around September 1950. I am not sure if she died in Cardiff, Wales or went back to Ireland as I have been given conflicting stories.

Very grateful for any help.

Thank You

Re: Bolger's - Philadelphia

The only information I have on my particular Bolgers is that they immigrated from Ireland to Philadelphia. I do know that my Malone family had a connection to Bolger's in Graiguenemanagh/St. Mullins but what happened to that extended family is off my radar at this point.

In 1900 the family at 1519 N. Broad Street, Philadelphia, was headed by John and Elizabeth Bolger. That same year, they were the sponsoring residents to a woman referred to as a cousin, Annie Malone, of St. Mullins, who landed in Philadelphia on May 8, 1900 on the SS Pennland. I suspect that this woman is Anna Malone, (b. 1875, daughter of James Malone and Elizabeth O'Neill). What makes this even more plausible is that she had a brother, John, born in 1882. I found a John Malone immigrating from Graiguenemanagh in 1901 on the SS Majestic along with my grand-aunt Josephine Joanna. He was going to visit a sister, and she a cousin. They sited the same Bolger address in Philadelphia as their final destination.

Back to Annie - she was traveling at the time with Margaret Power, of St. Mullins, age 24 who also claimed that one of the Bolger's was a cousin and cited the same Phila. address. In the 1901 Glynn Census, there was a Bridget Power, (age 68 in 1901) living with Josephine Johanna's mother (and my great-grandmother Mary Nolan and her second husband, Martin Hayes.

It is possible that other members of this Bolger family did go to Australia but I have uncovered no data as of yet that supports that. If you manage to trace some of your Bolgers to St. Mullins, let me know and we can compare family members and see if there is a link.

Best,
Joann
Correction to the posting below:

The name was originally spelled with BUlger but was changed to BOlger when he became a US citizen in 1880. His siblings retained the "U," and I believe their first names to be John and Lucy. (Still no first name for his sister who became Mrs. Robert Gneives). Edward was born somewhere in Ireland and emigrated to the US via England, where he met and married Polly, whose parents had emigrated from Eire to England.

You're welcome.

I don't. I just stuck it in there.

Frankly, though, there's no reason that a source geared for/to brief, easily absorbed information as is Wikipedia shouldn't be as accurate as any other source. The NY Daily News, for example -- as far as it goes -- is as accurate as the New York Times.

Nor can prestigious publications, institutions or authors necessarily be given much credence.

History texts written 40 years ago (some of which are mouldering in my long neglected library)are in some ways signiicanly different than those written today -- and there hasn't been enough archaeological or historical "finds" to account for it. The cause has been variously labeled as predeterminism, prejudice or the current collegial effluvium. I prefer the last.

I don't believe anything I read without reasonable supporting data.

Still, the subject, as stated above, is accurate. The names are the same.

rb
Bolger - Bulger -- Boulger: It's the Same Irish Name

My ancesters were Boulgers. Their name is often spelled Bolger on early documents in the US. Most, though not all, made certain that, where possible, the name was spelled as Boulger in later documents.

The name is not French nor English (tho' the pronunciation for all three versions may owe the soft G to the French.) It is most definitely Irish.

*******
Source for following nothing fancy: Wikipedia:

Bolger - The name Ó Bolguidhir in Irish is well disguised: the practice in modern English speech of pronouncing the G of Bolger soft adds to this; had it been written Bolgar the distortion would not have been so marked. Up to the end of the sixteenth century O'Bulgire was the usual form, though O'Boulger occurs at Ferns in 1541, The name Bolger is closely associated with south-east Leinster and is rarely found elsewhere. It is that of a sept which supplied many physicians to the chiefs in that area. A branch of the Bolger family who came to Ireland with Strongbow **in 1771** drifted to the Rower parish in Co. Kilkenny where they built a castle at Ballynabarnay. They held estates in the Rower and Clodiagh districts. There are many references to the name in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, to tenants, jurors and clergy as well as medical men, mainly in Co. Kilkenny; in the 1659 census it is recorded as a principal Irish name in three baronies of Co. Kilkenny, two of Co. Carlow and two of Co. Wexford. In the seventeenth century they are more prominent in Co. Wexford than elsewhere, as is the case today. Brassell and Dermot O'Bolger, both of Ballywalter, were among the chief gentlemen of the barony of Ballagheen in 1608, and in 1570 O'Bolgirs were of sufficient importance to be consulted by the Lord Deputy and Council on a matter relating to ancient rights, especially of the Colcloughs, in Co. Wexford. The family was well represented in James 11's Irish army and, after the Jacobite defeat, in the Irish Brigade in France. It is safe to say that almost all Bolgers in Ireland are of Ó Bolguidhir stock, it is possible that the soft G referred to above is to some extent attributable to the existence of the English surname Bolger or Boulger, which comes from the Old-French word boulgier (maker of leather bags). It is noteworthy that in most cases where the name Bolger appeared in the sixteenth century it has no terminal R so the accepted derivation may be incorrect. Bolger has a strong Wexford and Kilkenny showing in Griffiths Valuation. The name Bolger was a principal Irish name, in 1659, in the Co. Kilkenny baronies of Gowran, Ida and Knocktopher.

** That should read 1171 - not 1772 (read below) **

*********

I'm looking for Thomas Boulger (1844-1916).
My great grandfather was Thomas Boulger 1944-1916 (same name -- just one of three varieties: the other two being Bolger [most common] and Bulger.)

He emigrated in 1858. Raised his family in the Berkshires of Massachusetts, spending a short while farming in Stamford, Vt, and died in 1916 in North Adams, Ma where he, his wife Sarah (Glenn or Glynn) and their children are buried.
