Betty:

Henry Allen Bollen and first-wife, Laura Virginia Bolen are buried in the Gilchrist cemmetary in Friendship, AR. On an access road running alond side of I-30. I'm looking at some information that I got from Travis and jeanette Bollen, they sent you a thread last night (cherokeeyes) They have provided me with a mountain of research for the Bollen family of Robert and Henry Allen Bolen. In September the came and visited me, they also mailed me copies of their work. For Janie, they have married to a William Smith. their last address was:

Justice Precinct1,
Wise TX

It wasn't until I read through (Travis and Jeanette's) information that I seen that Janie's children were born here in Polk County, within 5 miles of Mena, AR where I live. Also when they came in to AR in September, they met a man from the Friendship Baptist Church named Jay Smith, who said that he was kin to the Bollens somewhere down the line, I wonder if it was through Janie?

According to Travis, Henry Allen Bolen and Elizabeth McGraw Bolen had these following children from Henry's first marriage:
1. Sara Bolen b 1880; Twins I think
2. William Bolen b 1880;
3. Janie Bolen b. 1888; this one married dto a John N. Smith

Henry Allen Bolen and Lara Virginia Woodard Bolen, Henry's second wife: their children:

Robert Charlie Bolen
Sam Henry Bolen My grandfather farmer
Lee Roy Bolen
Walter Austin Bolen--Teacher
Fred M.
Hi Paul,
Thanks for the information and the wonderful stories! As far as I have been able to find, Sarah Jane was Henry's only child with Elizabeth, her nickname was Janie. I cannot find a record of his having a son named William. She did marry Joseph Eli Smith and they moved to Oklahoma, had 10 children (one of whom was my grandmother) settling near Sentinel, Washita Co. where they both are buried in Mountainview. Lara and Henry had 11 children, she states this on the census, as there were 10 at home, the eldest, Robert Charley, had already left home. Would you happen to know which cemetery Henry,Lara and Elizabeth are buried in? I know that Elizabeth's sister Susan was buried in Old DeRoche Cemetery.

Also, there is a pretty good case to be made that James M. D. Lumpkin was the father of all of Sarah Jane McGraw's children. He finally married her on December 16, 1885, after his first wife with whom he also had a large family died in 1884. The two families lived in very close proximity from the late 1840s up through the 1880s. Elizabeth L. McGraw Bollen was named for her grandmother, Elizabeth McGraw, who lived with the family as the Head of Household until the 1880 census. I've not been able to show where Sarah Jane McGraw was ever married to anyone but James Lumpkin, and have not been able to find out who her father was either.

The story about William Bollen taking care of his mother, Charlotte, and Henry caring for his father,Robert is interesting. I cannot find any census showing Charlotte's wherebouts in 1880, although Robert is listed in AR and says he is married, and has all of the younger children there with him, including William who is 22. Many of Charlotte's Nichols relations show up in AR, her brother Daniel's family lives next door, and her mother went with several of her brothers that moved on to Texas. The only information I've found for Charlotte says she died in St. Clair, AL near where she was born. Interestingly, several of the Lumpkin children married Nichols in AR. Small world.

Again, thanks so much for your information! If I can help in any way, please let me know.
Your distant cousin,
Betty xtxnsntn@gmail.com

Henry Allen Bolen
Added by WillBollen on 18 Mar 2008

Henry Allen Bolen was born February 3, 1861 to Robert Bolen and Charolotte Nichols in St. Claire County, Alabama. In 1877, Robert made the desicion to move his family and his wife's to Arkansas. They travelled by covered wagon for about 450 miles. Henry was 16 years old at the time and made the trip on foot as he tended to the milk cow.

2 years later, Henry married his first wife on February 10, 1879 at the age of 18. Her name was Elizabeth McGraw and she was the daugter of Sarah McGraw and the step-daughter of James Lumpkin. They had three children together: Sarah, William, and Janie (Janie married a Smith and moved to Texas). In 1884, after Elizabeth passed away, Henry married Elizabeth's neice Lara Woolard who had been living with Henry and Elizabeth to care for her while she was ill.

Henry had a Model A car and he used to take his grandchildren to Arkadelphia 9 miles away to go shopping. One time he bought Pauline and Dolores a coat, then he took them out to eat. They had never done that before and it was a real treat. He was described as being kind, but Lara was not always as kind. Pauline also recalled a time when Henry had gone somewhere. She was outside busy doing something and Pauline was hungry, so she opened the ice box to see what she could find to eat and found some dried prunes. Lara came in and found her and scolded her. Pauline said about Lara, "I mostly remember being scared of Grandma Bollen. She was harsh."

Henry also donated the land for the old Caney Church and the school. Before that time there had never been a church or a school there before. Henry and his 9 boys tore down old barns and old houses and donated the lumber for the two buildings. At that time Henry lived on the left side of the road just before you go through the 4 way stop in Caney, where highways 128 and 283 cross. The location of the church was across the road from his house and the school was located just across the road in front of the church. Henry made the deed out under the condition that if either the church or the school ever failed to be such, then the land of either would revert back the present owner of the track of land. He was well known for seeing the need for a place of worship and education, several of his sons even went on to get college degrees and were school teachers. Henry was a deacon of this church.

(This information was compiled from information provided by Travis Bollen that he recieved from Lyndell, Grady, and Jessie Daniel Bollen as well as from information that was provided by Paul Bollen.)

This is all the information that my son has in his 'Bolen' research for Robert Bolen. Our family name originally had one "L" in it. Some of Henry Allen's sons attended college and were told the sound of their name needed the second "L" in it. Most of this is what I already sent you this morning. I'll send you what we have one Henry Allen in the next post.

Hope it helps
Paul

Robert Bollen
Added by WillBollen on 17 Mar 2008

Robert Bollen was born in 1839 in England. He came to American and settled in St. Claire county in Alabama (which incidentally was a county before Alabama was a state). He married a girl living there by the name of Charlotte Tempie Nichols. Together they had 5 boys: an unkown, William, John, Henry, and Bradley. In 1877, Robert and his family along with his in-laws, the Nichols, moved to Arkansas by way of covered wagons. Henry, the middle son, was 16 years old and walked the whole trip tending to the milk cow. After moving to Arkansas, Robert served as a deacon at Friendship Baptist Church. By the time he was in his fifties, Robert and Charlotte both became ill. The two were split by William and Henry; William taking their mother and Henry taking their father. He passed his family bible on to Henry (who passed it on to Wallace Lyndell). He died at age 54 of Palsy and is buried in the DeRoache Cemetery, between Frienship and Bismark.

(This information was compiled from information provided by Travis Bollen that he recieved from Lyndell, Grady, and Jessie Daniel Bollen.)

Additional information about this story
Description
Hi Paul,
Thanks for responding! I have Charlotte Bollen going back to AL to die in 1890; she was originally from Ashville, St. Clair Co., AL and the info I have says she was buried in St. Clair Co. (family graveyard?) She was the oldest of 14 children. I found Robert and his brother, John, in St. Clair, AL in the 1860 census, before the birth of Henry. William was 2. Both John and Robert have a first son named William, both say they were born in AL, but I haven't found anything on another Bollen family in that area. Trying to place his family of origin in AL. It's my understanding that Laura Woolard was related to Henry's first wife, Elizabeth McGraw. Elizabeth's older sister, Mary Ellen, was Charles Woolard's (Laura's father) first wife. If you have anything else on Robert (prior to AR), I'd appreciate the info. Is Robert buried in the old DeRoche cemetery?
Thanks,
Betty

I am also a Great, Great, Grandson of Robert and Charlotte T. (Nichols) Bollen who moved from Alabama in the mid to late 1800's to Arkansas to homestead. I grew up living with in 5-7 miles where Robert and his family moved to in Hot Springs County, an area called De Roach, and Robert is buried there also alone.

My Father, Grand Father, and Great, Grand Father Henry Allen, lived and were buried in a little town of Friendship, Arkansas, 60 miles from Little Rock. According to the family history, Robert and his wife both became ill in their middle-age. So Henry Allen Bollen, Robert's son, took care of his father, Robert until his death, and another son, named William Bollen, took his aged mother to Oklahoma, in a covered wagon, tied in a rocking chair. We don't know any other thing about her, of where she lived, or where she is buried.

It is good to hear form you

Hi Will,
I'm a descendant of Henry's through his oldest child, Sarah Jane Bollen, with Elizabeth McGraw. She was my great-grandmother. Elizabeth McGraw was related to his second wife, Laura Woolard, with whom he had 11 children.
Hi, I am a direct descendant of Robert Bollen, who married Charlotte T.Nichols in AL, and later died in Friendship,AR. His son Henry's first child, Sarah Jane Bollen, with Elizabeth McGraw, was my great-grandmother. I found Robert on the 1860 census in AL with a brother John, living next door. They each have a first child named William. I cannot however find any other information on how he arrived in AL, although in the 1870 census he and John say they were born there. Can you tell me how the family arrived in America; from your earlier post, it would seem they went from Scotland to Canada. Where to from there? I would appreciate any information you can give me and would be happy to reciprocate with information on the family line that ended up in OK and TX, should you so desire. Thanks in advance, Betty Aronson xtxnsntn@gmail.com

I'm also a descendant of Robert Bollen, through his son Henry's first child,Sarah Jane Bollen, with Elizabeth McGraw. She was my great-grandmother. I've been unable to find anything else on Robert prior to his marriage to Charlotte in 1856. On the 1860 census he says he was born in AL. Also, it shows that he had a brother, John, whose family lived next to his on the 1870 census, who also said he was born in AL. They each had a first child named William, possibly a father's name? Do you have any other information about Robert prior to his arrival in AL in the 1850's? If so, I would appreciate seeing it and would be happy to reciprocate with info about the Bollen line that went to Oklahoma and on to Texas. Thanks in Advance!
Bollens - England

There were too many messages to read here, so I'm posting my own. Just found out I have Bollen ancestors from Somerset, England. George (b. about 1785, died 1850?), and Hannah (b. about 1794, d. after 1881) Bollen, who raised their family in Yeovil, England. They had six children, at least, one of whom was Elizabeth Ellen (b. 1835) who married William Thomas Cox. They had a son, Albert, who came to Pittsburgh. Has anyone researched this family in England? There appear to be quite a few Bollens in the Yeovil area of Somerset. Mine attended an "Independent" church, i.e. not church of England.

My AMES/ HAMES family come from Child Okeford, at least that's where Diane PAIN married Benjamin HAMES. Their daughter Betty was born in Child O. MyPOPES came from Okeford Fitzpaine and Hazelbury Bryan [ I think] there are so many of them, it's hard to keep track.

My niece is researching the BOLLEN family. She has one from Poole, but he was born out of county, his name was Charles I believe. He married Mary Ann BURBAGE in Poole. Have you come across these?
I am searching for information on Peter Bollen b.3-7-1826 and his 3 sons, Martin b.1873, Johan(John) b.1871 and Frans(Frank) b.1868. We believe they were from the province of Limburg in the Netherlands possibly the town of Meijel. They settled in East Dubuque, IL in 1892 and later to upstate New York in 1920. Any information would be greatly appreciated.
Norm Bollen

Melinda

I don't believe this is the same Martin Bollen. This Martin was married to Cora Etta Shinoe, July 4th, 1899. They had 2 children as far as I know. Harry Bollen, born Oct 28, 1900 and a Dorothy Bollen. I will continue to research it out though.

I am a descendant of Henry Allen Bollen who moved to Arkansas from Alabama. My family has done some research before me and there is a rumor that Henry's father was named Robert and his dates would seem to coincide with the information you posted. Also, I have found some great uncles who ventured off into California: Lee Roy Bollen, who after his wife had died; and Clarady, who moved sometime after 1930. I also have info on brothers who went to Oregon, Oklahoma, and Florida.

Henry Allen Bollen

Henry Allen Bollen was born in AL in 1861 and moved to Arkansas. I cannot find anything on him earlier than 1930. He might have came to AR with a brother James, but I have found nothing that connects them.

Oddly, I found a Rachel Bollen who married a John Caruthers and died in a neighboring county. She is the earliest Bollen that I have found in the area.

If anyone has any information about Bollens/Bolens in AR, AL, or GA please notify me.

Robert W BOLLEN

Seeking any information on Robert W. Bollen/Bolin/Bollin, etc.and descendants. Robert W Bollen was born ca 1814-1815 in VA and married Sarah (NICKEL) RIEN on 16 Jul 1839 in Mercer Co., OH. They had 2 children, Thomas b. ca 1840 in OH and Sarah J. born ca 1842 in OH. Sarah Rien had 2 older sons, Samuel and John W. Rien, by a previous marriage.
In the 1840s the family migrated to Dade Co., MO where Sarah's father and mother and siblings were living. In 1854, the Bollens divorced and the surname disappeared from Dade Co. What happened to Robert W. Bollen? Where did he go? Did he remarry and have other children?

Sarah Bollen and her daughter, Sarah J., migrated to Sonoma Co., CA in the late 1850s with her 2 older sons, Samuel and John W. Rien. There she and Sarah J. lived with Samuel Rien, according to the 1860 and 1870 Sonoma Co., CA censuses. What happened to son Thomas Bollen/Bolin? He would have been about age 19 when his mother, sister and half brothers moved to CA. Did he go with them? Did he go with his father or did he strike out on his own?
What happened to Sarah J. Bollen? She was age 28, unmarried at the time of the 1870 census. What happened to her? Did she marry?
