I don't know who Fannie's parents were. I have her in the 1880 U.S. Census married to John Armitage in Galway, Saratoga County, NY. This census shows her born in NY abt. 1848. All children but 1 on this census were from John's first marriage. William age 1 was John & Fannie's first child.

The 1900 U.S. Census shows her arrival in 1872 at age 28 from England and shows both parents born in England. That would put her birth date abt. 1844. It shows the # of years married as 23, which means she would have married John in 1877. That would fit because John's first wife Hannah died in 1876 The census actually states her birth date was 1853.

John & Fannie's children were:

1. William Armitage
2. Wallace Bolls Armitage
3. Chauncey Armitage
4. Burton Ralph Armitage (my ggf)

I knew her maiden name was Bowles (from other's research) until I found a draft card for Wallace and his middle name was "Bolls". I assume they got the spelling from his mother's maiden name. So she arrived from England in 1872 and married in 1877. That is all I know about her - let me know if anything looks familiar! I sort of doubt she came up from Mississippi but who knows? It is possible! They moved around in those days alot more than I thought!

Was your Fannie Bolls Armitage actually the daughter of John Wesley and Mattie Bolls of Mississippi? I have this Fannie Bolls as born in 1865 at Edwards in Hinds County, Mississippi, and she appeared on the 1870 and 1880 Hinds County censuses. But I'm not aware of who she married or whatever became of her after 1880. My records also show Fannie's siblings as Nannie Lillian, Lizzie S., Anna M., Wesley Dudley, Mattie Olive, Mary Lee, Laura B., and Verna Bolls. I descend from John Wesley Bolls' great-uncle and would like to exchange info with you. Please respond here or to my email directly at cathy@dustyroads.net.
Hi Patricia,

Just got chills reading your post. My father D'Wayne Armitage died just this past April from Huntington's disease. I never really knew him. Only after his passing did his wife tell me what he died of and when I looked it up on the computer, needless to say, I was horrified. I had a 50% chance of having it, as did each of my 4 children. His father was Ralph Burton Armitage, his father was Burton Ralph Armitage and his parents were John L. Armitage and Fannie Bolls. The funny thing is my father's mother (Adelaide Morrissey) died of Alzheimer's. I figured it came through her and she just had a misdiagnosis. As far as I know my grandfather Ralph Burton & his father Burton Ralph did not die of HD. I did end up having the blood test and thankfully I don't have the HD gene. :)

Gustavus Adolphus L. Bolles

I'm looking for any information on the family of Gustavus Adolphus L. Bolles who was born in South Carolina about 1807. I've found him as far back as the 1830-1840 Pickens County, SC census. By 1850, he had moved his family to Fayette Co., AL, and by 1860, to Lauderdale County, AL, appearing in both the 1860 & 1870 census. By 1880, G.A.L. Bolles had moved to Hardin Co., TN to live with the family of his son, Daniel. That is the last I can find of him or any of his sons' families.

There is also a record of a land purchase in the records of the Bureau of Land Management's General Land Office database for 40.06 acres in Lauderdale County, AL in 1860.

Gustavus married a Charlotte ? around 1825 in SC, and had at least 6 children:
Gustavus (b. abt 1826) m. Jane ?
William (b. abt 1829) m. Elizabeth ?
Calaway (b. abt 1830)
Clarissa (b. 1835) m. William R.L. Minton
Daniel (b. abt 1835)
Matilda (b. abt 1837)

All my information on him can be found at my World Connect tree:

http://wc.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=daclyde...

In various records, I've found his last name spelled Boles, Bolles, Bolls, Bowles and Bowls. Clarissa, I've always found consistently spelled Bowles. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I do have some info on John C. Bolls but nothing about his parentage/time/place/ancestry in Ireland.

In the book "A Concise History of the Introduction of Protestantism into Mississippi and the Southwest" written in 1866 by Reverend Jonathan G. Jones (son-in-law of John C. Bolls), it says that John C. Bolls/Bowles, Sr. is understood to be born in Ireland in 1750 (although I've also seen the date 1747 in other records). There are many passages in Jones' book concerning our John C. Bolls (referred to as "a NATIVE Irishman and one of the purest Christians we ever saw" and "his standing weight was onlly one hundred pounds"). This book can be accessed through the internet (do a google search).

It appears that John emigrated to America about 1768 and married in Rowan County NC (or MS?) to Martha Jane Elder, daughter of Matthew Elder & Mary Kinncannon. Martha Elder was born about 1750-1754, probably in York, Pennsylvania (although some accounts say Ireland). Martha died at about age 80 on 26 March 1830 in Jefferson County MS.

Research leads us to believe that Martha's father Matthew Elder was born about 1710 at Templemore in Londonderry, England and emigrated in the 1730s to America. It appears that he married Martha's mother Mary Kincannon in America about 1740 in either Virginia or Pennsylvania. Matthew died about 1783 in Washington VA.

There is also an 1887 book called "The Complete History of Methodism" that has a great deal of info on Reverend Moses Floyd, father of Salina Floyd, that married our William Bolls after first wife Elizabeth Griffing died (note that Salina is actually Elizabeth's niece). I descend through Salina & William's daughter Emily Jane Bolls.

I also grew up in Nevada County AR in the same community where these Bolls lived, so I'm very familiar with the Bolls heritage and surroundings there. I have compiled a Bolls timeline that will probably be of interest to you, and I can email it to you directly.
Bolls, Emersons, Andrews, McLellands of late 1800's Redland Twp/ Nevada County AR

Looking for more info on the Emerson family connected to Walter D. Emerson and his sister Maddie, who are understood to have been the children of C. C. Emerson and Rachel Andrews in Nevada County AR. Walter & Maddie were born about 1886-1888. Their parents died when the children were young, so Walter & Maddie were raised by their uncle Jim Andrews at Redland Township, Nevada County AR 6 miles east of Prescott AR).

The Andrews lived across the road from the McLellands, and when Maddie was grown, she became the wife (2nd) of George Wells McLelland. Walter married Fannie Bolls (b 1890, d/o Jack & Martha Bolls of Redland).
