My Great-grandmother was Guro "Julia" Bolstad, her father's name was Nels Bolstad. She had a twin brother in California. Julia married Gulick Nelson Kolve from Voss, Norway. They lived in Medina, Dane Co., Wisconsin until they moved to Trempealeau Co., Wisconsin in the 1870's. I am looking for any info. on the Bolstad family in Norway and Wisconsin. Thank-you.

Stephanie, I have already started looking into the Digital Archives and found the marriage of Guleck Kolve and Martha Eiriksdtr Lassahaugen in 1860. I didn't want to go to work this a.m. because I wanted to stay home and search, besides the fact that is was nearly minus 20 degrees F when I got up. Yes, I live in Wisconsin, Mondovi, Buffalo County to be exact. So I am close to all the places that my ancestors settled in the 1800s with many of the cemeteries and county courthouses quite close. I was born here, but lived in other states over the years, including California.

I started a tree years ago, but dropped out of it at one time and then started a new one "Paulson Family Tree". All of my ancestors came from Norway so it makes it very interesting to write to people with family also from there. I don't know anything about the Vosselag, but I will look into it.

As you say, you are addicted to the hunt and I can identify with that, and so it goes on. I will alert you if I get something earth-shattering.

Jon

You're welcome Jon. P Risvold, our other helper Jean, with data from Voss, and I often team up on these hunts. We are a little addicted to the hunt. heh heh

You are way ahead of the curve from many posters on these sites. You have done work to try to find facts for yourself rather than just posting and expecting the work will be handed to you.

You'll love the DA (Digital Archives) now that you have a jump start on how to get through it. PR did a great job. I am sure she got tired of writing the directions and finally put that together. It just requires a lot of digging, studying, comparing, etc. Just keep an open mind with spelling!

Where are you? I may be able to direct you more.

Stephanie
Pacifica, California

Thanks Stephanie, This info will help me a great deal. Even though I have been working on the genealogy thing for quite some time, I am still an amateur as you can tell. I never knew how to work through the Digitalarkivet web site very well so I am anxious to get started. I hope you don't mind if I bug you now and then if I get lost, you obviously know your way around the many web sites while I only know my way around the census reports and cemeteries in my area. I am determined to learn as much as time permits.

Thanks also, to your friend, P. Risvold, it is nice to have that kind of assistance for us novices.

I will try to keep in touch with you when I find "breaking news".

Takke, Jon

Hi Jon,

I don't know when Martha died. You may want to now start scouring the US records as well as the Norwegian Digital Archives.

My friend, P Risvold wrote these directions. It's great and there is no point in my reinventing the wheel and I have her permission to post it.
The Digitalarkivet web site has been adding scanned images of the original Norwegian parish church records for anyone with Internet access since November 2005. They are planning that this project of adding the records may be finished by the end of the year 2007. More records are added every week.

The Digitalarkivet web site - http://digitalarkivet.uib.no/cgi-win/WebFront.exe?slag=vis&a...
An English option is available by clicking on that word from either the left hand column or the blue link bar along the bottom of the homepage.
The scanned images are available from the homepage link "Skanna kyrkjebøker" [Norwegian version]/"Digitised parish records" [English version] which is listed along the left hand column and from the blue banner of links along the top section of the homepage.
After you've clicked on that link and a new main page has presented on the screen be sure and read the instructions that are available from the Digitalarkivet for navigating the scanned records. The instructions are available in Bokmål (official Norwegian), Nyorsk (Norwegian), Davvisámegiella (Saami), and English.
Recommended basic reading are the "Startsiden" [Norwegian version]/"Main page" [English version], "Brukerveiledning" [Norwegian version]/"User's guide" [English version] and "Om tjenesten" [Norwegian version]/"About this service" [English version].

When you've studied and used the instructions and been able to find a scanned page that you'd like to capture as a URL to share with someone else or save for your family history documentation - just copying the URL that your browser shows will NOT provide a working link.

Working direct links to the scanned images on the Digitalarkivet can be copied and pasted from the desired page from a display option available. At the top of the scanned image page is an option labeled "Bildeinformasjon:" [Norwegian version]/"Image Information"[English version] which is by default set to "Ingen" [Norwegian version]/"None" [English version]. Change that and magic is available. Of the three options I like "Øverst" [Norwegian version]/"On top" [English version] because it puts the additional information across the top of the page and is usually easier for me to see.

Copy either the permanent page link on the line "Permanent sidelenke:" [Norwegian version]/"Permanent pagelink" [English version] or the permanent image link "Permanent bildelenke:" [Norwegian version]/"Permanent imagelink" [English version] given. The permanent page link will bring the user to the exact same web page location, with source information displayed and with all the choices for viewing at ratios from 20 to 150%. The permanent image will display only a jpg image file with greatly more limited zoom capabilities.

The first line "Kildeinformasjon:" [Norwegian version]/"Source information" [English version] is a really nice summary of the source of the information and is wonderful to have for making detailed source citations, footnotes, etc.

The second line "Permanent sidelenke:" [Norwegian version]/"Permanent pagelink" [English version] is the best line to capture if you want to save or share the actual scanned image and the source information. It allows the full capabilities for zooming in and out to best view the image and informs the recipient of the exact location, book and other details to be able to find WHERE you found the information.

The third line "Permanent bildelenke:" [Norwegian version]/"Permanent imagelink" [English version] is the best used to print a copy of the image or to save a copy of the image in a jpg format computer file. This line does NOT also capture the source information and therefore is NOT the best line to copy to share online when requesting help or assistance in deciphering the image found.

Good information about translating the formats of Norwegian parish church records during various time periods, many of the basic terms used and understanding how to use the information should be studied at this web site -
http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~norway/na20.html
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Now I'll get you started...
1. Go to http://digitalarkivet.uib.no/cgi-win/WebFront.exe?slag=vis&a...
2. Click on Digitised parish records on the blue strip towards the top
3. Click on Read the Digitised Parish Records
4. Change Velg Fylke to Hordaland and then scroll down to Voss. You'll see the ministers records as well as the klokkers so sometimes you may look at both for comparisons. Once you're inside that link you can look for the records you see and click on it - page by page.
Check PR's' links to Ancestors from Norway which has column headings translated.
I would start by looking for Gullick leaving the parish - Udvandringen between 1860 and 1865 at a stretch. There is a list in the Digital Archives that was transcribed but I didn't see him in it.
I would also recommend you join the Vosselag if you haven't already. http://www.vosselag.org/ - the web site is fabulous and you can join the list from there for communicating with those of us interested in Vossings.
Questions?
Stephanie
Stephanie, If Britha Nielsdtr Mossefin and Guro are sisters, then Lewis Vinsand and Martha Kolve were first cousins, and Lewis' brother, Andrew Vinsand Jr. and Betsy Kolve were first cousins as well. If I had a lightbulb icon to insert here, I would. In 2007, we were in Iowa visiting some of my distant cousins and Shirley Vinsand said that there was a belief that Andrew and Betsy had been first cousins and that was what caused the poor eyesite in the family. We dimissed the idea and I told her that sisters had married brothers so maybe the thought had come from that. We didn't have any eyesite problems here in Wisconsin. Funny, huh?
I think we have the correct family now thanks to you.
How do you access parish records?
If two brothers left Iowa and came to Wisconsin to marry two sisters, one couple staying and one couple returning to Iowa, there had to be a connection. It makes sense now.
What of Guro's twin brother Ole in Oakland, California?
What happened to Marta Lassahaugen?
I will keep searching. Oh, by the way, there was a Nils Bolstad in the 1830's that was involved in the settling of Koshkonong, Wisconsin, the area near Madison where most Norwegians first came when they arrived in Wisconsin.
There was an Anders Bolstad and a Knut Bolstad that settled in Chimney Rock, Trempealeau Co., also. They are listed in the "Dover and Chimney Rock Colonies" in the History of Voss.
Thanks again for your help.
Jon
Hi stephanie, I was at the Trempealeau COunty courthouse last week and I may have looked at the death record for the wrong Julia Kolve. It said her father's name was Nels Bolstad, but no name for the mother. There were a number of Julia Kolves in the Chimney Rock area of Trempealeau Co. at that time and as you know, every Gertrude, Guri or Guro from Norway ended up with the name Julia in America.
Also, the records from Voss show Gulick Nelson Kolve as marrying Marta Lassahagen in 1860, but Guro's obit says she married Gulick in Dane Co. I have never seen another reference to Marta Lassahagen anywhere, maybe she died. Guro and Gulick had my great-grandmother Martha in 1865 in Dane County, Wisconsin.
I have removed Nels Bolstad from my tree and am waiting until I get more confirmation this time. I may need to go back to the courthouse. The mystery goes on, but that is some of the reason we do this, I think.
Thanks for your continued help, and your friend, as well. Sorry if I confused everyone, but without the name Bolstad you would not have seen my posts and you have been a great help.
Jon
Jon,
Where'd you get the name Bolstad? My friend theorized that she married a Bolstad and then he died. I don't see any Bolstads from Ulvik that fit that. Unfortunately, there are Bolstad farms in a variety of places in Norway.
Stephanie
Hi Jon,
I am glad you have them in your file already, it cuts down on people in your tree :-) All kidding aside, if they are in your file as a direct relative, that is very common. Or brothers often marry sisters, etc which sometimes helps get it all together.
Yes they had as a sister Britha http://www.arkivverket.no/URN:NBN:no-a1450-kb20070524640128.... (though the dad's name doesn't look right) and a brother Mikkel http://www.arkivverket.no/URN:NBN:no-a1450-kb20070524640176....
I have emailed my friend who is very versed in Vossings in Norway and she doesn't see any connection to Bolstad but she will share the info. The database doesn't always have data on those who went to America, or wherever, and who they married AFTER they emigrated.
Do you have Guro's parents marrying?
http://www.arkivverket.no/URN:NBN:no-a1450-kb20070524640054....
If you go to http://www.ullstad.com/index.htm?/vossaboki/vossaboki.htm and click on Grimastad, you'll see:
Ullstad genealogy pages: Vossaboki volume 4 - Grimastad
Husmenn.
Olav Andersson var husmann i 1664.
Hi Stephanie, the date that you gave for Guro's birth is the date in her obit. as well, but her tombstone has her confirmation date on it. I will check that again. Also, I apologize for the date of her father's birth, it was a wild guess to help me check back later and I just put it in a couple of days ago. As for the parents, if they are Niels Gunders. Grimestead and Magli Mikkelsdtr., then they are already in my family tree along with the Vinsands and the Mossefin name.
I think we are on the same people. I will be following up on all of the info you sent. If Guro and Ole are the correct ones then they must have had a sister named Britha.
I will be in touch. Thank you so much.
Jon
Re: Bolstad, Kolve, Wisconsin
Hi Jon,
I have not researched this family before though the name seemed familiar - I just frequent the Bolstad board among others and help when I can or if I get curious. I have Bolstads in my line but from another part of Norway. I also thought at first that we were talking about the Bolstad farms nearby in Ulvik which I have worked on a fair amount especially since many of them ended up in Tremp. County.
I saw in another post that you have the birth date posted which I found to be this Guro's baptism. Are we sure we are talking about the same person?
So here is my theory about Guro. See what you have and how it seems to add up.
Let's look at Guro and Ole in the birth records at http://www.arkivverket.no/URN:NBN:no-a1450-kb20070524640222....
The parents are Niels Gunders. Grimestad ? Opqvitne and Magli Mikkelsdtr.
So Bolstad isn't mentioned there.
And I found Ole's confirmation first #43 and they are living on Mossefin http://www.arkivverket.no/URN:NBN:no-a1450-kb20070104610659....
Here's Guro's confirmation #32 http://www.arkivverket.no/URN:NBN:no-a1450-kb20070104610661....
This is Guro emigrating http://digitalarkivet.no/cgi-win/webcens.exe?slag=visbase&am...
However, this doesn't prove we're talking about the same person.
I saw in another post that you have her birth date as the date that I found for this Guro's baptism. The 1900 US census says May as the birth month so there is room for doubt. Again, that wouldn't be the first time I saw this.
On your family tree you have Guro's dad as born in 1805. If that is fact, then we have a problem. This Niels, who was the father of this Guro was born 1797.
The name Bolstad doesn't add much weight to a problem because they changed the farm association every time they moved. Bolstad could have been the last place she lived before emigrating. One of the original Vossings to Wi was from the Bolstad farms.
I can look more at these parents if you think it is worth pursuing. I needed a little diversion from my own work but I don't want to go on a wild goose chase for too long though. :-)
If your other line lived on Mossefin too then Gullick and Guro probably knew each other there and/or may have been distant relatives. That would not be uncommon.
Stephanie
Stephanie, thanks for the note. Yes, Guro and Ole are twins. I have almost nothing on the Bolstad family, but the Mossafin name is in my tree from other relatives from Voss. My e-mail is cahoots@cvcexpress.net if you could provide more info on the Bolstads or respond to me through this site. I think I have found enough information now that I linked to another tree with living relatives. I am sending them an email to try to make contact.
Your messages have been out there a long time, but I have Lars (1722 - ?) and Randi (1722 - 1782). Lars is son of Sjurgurd Bolstad (1662 - 1740) and Ronnaug (1724 - ?). The tree gets a little confuding from there but they have Ronnaug's parents as being Lars Bolstad (1644 - 1708) and Kari (? - ?). Kari's father is Jakob Kvarberg (1575 - 1660). Since Bolstad is a place name it is possible that there could have been several Bolstads with different lineages. This is my wife's family tree and I was just punching it into the computer and thought I would do a search for Lars Bolstad. Anyway, you might already have some of this info by now, but I thought I'd post it anyway.
Bolstad 1836 to 1903 did have the surname Paulsen but changed it to Bolstad when coming to the US in 1864 or 1866. He married Brita who was born 2 Feb 1847 in Uloog, Norway and died in 1927. Their son Paul E Bolstad was born 20 Dec 1869 and died 4 June 1962 in Lake Mills, IA. He married Bertina (Tina) Bendickson on 22 Feb 1894. She was born 1 Jun 1872 and died 16 Feb 1950.
I will check with Mabel and check what I have at home. I have a sheet that lists some information that Mabel's daughter wrote out. So will check that out and get back to you this weekend. As far as I can tell you are on the same track as I am. I do remember seeing something about the name being Paulsen at one time. No, I don't have access to census records personally.
Ok, as you know censuses are one of the best places to start with your research. Do you have access to them at this time? It looks like we're talking about the same family. In the 1930 census there is a Bert, Harry and Willie as well as Mabel.
Since Mabel is still alive, ask her if her grandparents were Endre/Ander/Andrew and Betsy/Brita/Berta.
Unfortunately the 1920 census seems to leave off Paul and wife but has Bert, Harry, Pearl and Mabel. A page is missing. I checked both ancestry.com and heritage quest. The image is not there.
However, Paul's widowed mother appears to be next door with a daughter Marie.
In 1900 Endre and Brita are living right next door.
Of course in 1880 it appears that they are using Paulsen. This is very normal for the norwegians to switch back and forth between using their patrynomic name and their farm name ie Bolstad. Brita's mother is living with them - a Gjertru Torgersen.
On the 1880 census Endre is using A. That is normal too. They often switch from Endre to Andrew or any americanized version.
Of course, this needs to all be proven with hard facts. See what Mabel says. I have no proof that Endre married a Brita. All I know is that he left Norway 1866, if we are talking about the correct person.
Let me know what you find out. My time is limited and if we are on the wrong track, I don't want to burn my time.
Stephanie
No, I have not checked any census records. I have just started my research on the family. They also had other children: Harry, Willie, Harry, Pearl, Alma, & then Mabel. Mabel will be 96 this year.
Have you looked at the US censuses? We have to be sure we're on the right track. In 1930, the census says there is a Paul E. Bolstad living with an Anna B. (perhaps B. is for Bertina) They had a daughter Mabel who was 19 at the time. They were living in Norway Township.
Is that your couple?
Stephanie
This is what I can tell you right now. I have more information at home.
Paul Bolstad was born Dec 20, 1869 and died June 4, 1962. He was married to Bertina "Tina" Bendickson on Feb 22, 1894 (it was a triple wedding). She was born June 1, 872 and died Feb 16, 1950. Paul was a painter, photographer, and also a taxidermist for some time.
Let me know if you need more information.
I believe you are talking about the Bolstads from Ulvik. I am not directly related but I have studied this area of Norway.
You didn't give any dates so I can verify that we are talking about the same people. If you respond with some dates I may be able to help you. If you know anything else like was Paul married twice or did his wife use the name Anna or Tina.
Stephanie
California
