Hello Linda...thank you for your reply. Too bad about the bible being lost to us. Are you descended from Lewis Franklin and Mary Virginia Thacker Bolton? My g-father Joe Lewis Bolton was one of their three or four youngest children. Dan Burnett sent me the Bolton Family History that you put together and it has meant so much. We never knew much about Grandad Joe Lewis Bolton but thanks to you I now have a past for him. I would love to meet you if I ever get back to Bowling Green.

Have a blessed day, Pat Tibbs Diodati

If we can establish with reasonable certainty that Mary's father is indeed the brother of my ancestor James Bolton, I would be very pleased if you would include a paragraph in your book about the Boltons. (I can provide you with more detailed information via e-mail than has already been posted.)

And, yes, you are welcome to use the picture, but I will try to provide you with a better copy.

I anxiously await news of what you learn from the Catholic Church regarding Mary's records at St. John's Orphanage.

Also, I notice from the 1900 census showing the newly married George and Mamie Trenouth that there appears to be an orphanage nearby. Could it be that at some point Mary had transferred there from the San Juan orphanage?

I am a waiting confirmation from the Catholic Church regarding the verification of Mary Eleanor Bolton being delivered to the St. John's Orphan Asylum. Mary told her daughter that her father was Thomas G. Bolton. That is also the information that came down in our family since 1885 when my great grandfather started buying properties around Mission Peak. BTW I find it interesting that your last name is "Peak". The book I am publishing is about Mission PEAK properties. I am assuming you wouldn't mind if I included a short paragraph in my book about the Bolton's history as it applies to Thomas G. Bolton. May I also use the photo in my book, with credit to you?

Thank you for the very interesting information about Mary E. Bolton Trenouth. I do hope we can establish that her father, Thomas Bolton, is the brother of my ancestor, James F. Bolton.

I am also in the process of writing a book (about the Bolton and Curtis families) so I can provide you with some details about them.

Thomas and James appear to have been farmers or farm laborers and seem to have been quite itinerate.

Thomas George Bolton (b. 1824) and his brother James (b. 1826) emigrated from Yorkshire, England, with their parents and siblings in 1832. They landed in New York City but I do not know where they settled after that.

1860 California census: James Bolton is living in Eden Township, Alameda County (specific location at the base of Castro Valley near Hayward) with his wife Isabella (nee Curtis), their young son Alfred, and James' brother Thomas. (Thomas is listed with this family on every California census.)

The family apparently moved to San Mateo County (possibly near Half Moon Bay) approximately 1866.

1870: The family is on the census for Tule River, Tulare County. They lived in a rural area northeast of Porterville. Thomas and James were farmers and registered to vote in Tulare County in 1871.

1875: Two newspapers indicate that James F. Bolton died in San Benito County. This comports with family lore.

1880: Thomas is listed on the census for Murray Township, Alameda County, along with his sister-in-law Isabella and her children. It is worth noting that after James' death, Isabella gave up a 4-year-old son to her brother in Wisconsin. I believe they moved to this area during this difficult time because a sister of Thomas and James, Teresa (Bolton) May, lived with her husband and family in Livermore. The Boltons lived in nearby Altamont.

By 1884, the Boltons moved to Stockton and there they remained. However, at some point in time Thomas had a homestead southwest of Merced. I am not sure when he first began his claim, but it may have been in the early 1870s, again according to family lore.

I do have two pictures of Thomas G. Bolton, both in his later years. I will be happy to share those with you.

Would you be willing to share a copy of the 1877 survey of the Bolton shanty?

Also, do your original records or family documents indicate that Mamie's father's middle initial was "G"? If so, this would be a strong indicator in favor of our hoped-for connection.

The children of James and Isabella (Curtis) Bolton were:
Alfred Curtis Bolton (b. 1859)
Thomas Charles Bolton (b. 1865)
Isabelle Frances Bolton "Nellie" (b. 1867)
Clara Bolton (b. 1870) died young
Joseph D. Bolton (b. 1871)
Clara Isabelle Bolton (b. 1872)
John Francis Bolton (b. 1873)
Elodia May Bolton (b. 1875)
You said that Thomas Bolton's brother, James F. Bolton, died in San Benito County in 1875. If Thomas' wife died in childbirth, it would only be natural for the living infant to be cared for by family (James in San Benito Co.?). If nobody knew about Mary's parentage or their location at the time of James' death, it would have been natural for Mary to have been placed in the orphanage.

Was James F. the husband of Isabella? If not, do you know the name of her husband or James' wife and children?

Hello

Thank you for the contact. Much of what follows comes from the grand daughter of Mary E. Bolton Trenouth and from my great grandfather, A. A. Moore, (who bought the Bolton property)and is in a book I am writing:

About a quarter mile past the official end of Mill Creek Road was the Thomas Bolton place. He was married (wife’s name unknown) and they had a daughter, Mary Eleanor Bolton, born in 1871. They originally lived in a “shanty” as described in the 1877 survey, but before they could build a better home, Thomas’ wife died. The remaining three trees of their apple orchard can still be seen today. They lived on what had been the McGilivray 120-acre railroad grant. Thomas shows up later in the 1880 census records living as a farmer in Murray Township. Living with him is his sister-in-law and all of her children.

William and Elizabeth Trenouth had emigrated from England to Australia, where their daughter Elizabeth was born in 1848. They then moved to California where their boys, George R., William Jr., and Richard, were born in 1857, 1859, and 1861 respectively. Richard died as a young man, and William married and had a daughter named Margaret . George R. Trenouth had been a twin but the other twin died. George Sr. and his wife, Mary Eleanor Bolton Trenouth (Mamie), farmed and lived on the land and had three children – Bernadette, called “Totsy”, and twins – George Jr. and Dorothy. George Sr. was a bachelor until his forties, and he was caring for his mother while living on the ranch. It was really too much for him to handle alone, so he sought out a woman who might help with this task. Here is where Mamie comes into the picture. She was the daughter of Thomas G. Bolton and had lived on Mission Peak Road for a while just a mile down the road from the Trenouth ranch. Her mother died and, because her father was unable to keep his daughter due to economic difficulties, Mamie was placed in the St. John’s Orphan Asylum, a Catholic convent in San Juan, San Benito County, to be raised and schooled . So in about 1893 when she was twenty-two years old, she went to care for Mrs. Trenouth and lived at the Trenouth ranch. Notwithstanding an age difference of fourteen to sixteen years, it happened that love blossomed between George and Mamie . They were married in 1899 and, for a time, they lived down in Centerville before moving back up to their ranch.

George R. Trenouth and Mamie were married, according to the 1900 census, when he was 41 and she was 25 (there are generally some age discrepancies when comparing different census years’ information). Two years later their daughter, Bernadette, was born. Six years after their first child was born, the twins were born. Childbirth may have taken a greater toll on Mamie than usual. They only had these three children. As George was driving the family back home up Mill Creek Road, coming from wherever the twins had been born, they stopped at the Justus Overacker home to visit and take a break. Both of these couples had been neighbors seven years earlier after they had both been recently married, so they were friends. Margaret, wife of Michael Justus Overacker, saw that Mamie was not looking too strong following the birth. The babies were very small, possibly premature, so she suggested that they leave Dorothy with her to be taken care of until Mamie was strong enough to handle both the twins (1907). Many times the oven of the wood burning stove was used to put the child in to keep her warm. Dorothy ended up staying with the Overackers for her first three months. Later in life Howard Overacker (born in 1912), youngest son of Justus and Margaret, used to joke with Dorothy that she was really his sister .

Do you have a picture of Thomas Bolton? I am getting a picture of Mary in about a week.

Thomas Bolton, who in 1880 lived in Murray Township, Alameda County, CA, with his sister-in-law Isabella and her children, was a brother of my ancestor James Bolton. Is this the Thomas Bolton you refer to in your post?

I have researched this family extensively and had not been aware that Thomas had ever married. Could it be that the father of the Mary Eleanor Bolton is not the Thomas Bolton listed in Alameda County in 1880? I am hoping that they are the same person, but I am skeptical. However, you mention that Mary E. Bolton was raised in an orphanage in San Benito County. Thomas Bolton's brother, James F. Bolton, died in San Benito County in 1875.

I would love to learn more from you about Mary E. Bolton and her father.

BOLTON FAMILY FROM WEXFORD UPDATE

As a quick update, I have managed to find a book that has detailed ancestry of the Bolton family from Wexford. Roots are traced through to Richard Bolton, born 1549 in Beaumaris Wales. It turns out that the Boltons came from Wales, and joined Oliver Cromwell's expedition to Ireland in 1649. Some of the original family records have been lost in a fire in the 1920's, but this book is well written and reasonably complete. There is a scanned copy on ancestry.com.

Source: Original data: Bolton, Charles Knowles,. Bolton families in Ireland : with their English and American kindred : based in part upon original records which no longer exist. Boston: Goodspeed's Bookshop, 1937.

You can see the info here on the blog:
http://the-lost-colony.blogspot.com/2009/09/new-23andme-auto...

Roberta Estes
Bolton Family DNA Project Administrator (volunteer)
robertajestes@att.net

Just found this site...my dad's family is from England (Warton, Lancashire area). We have many family bibles...the Bolton's were very good at keeping records. We have death cards & birth announcements. The Bolton males in my dad's family were all police officers/ armed services and came to Canada in the early 1900s. The were also in the horticultural arena- ferns, I believe.
William Henry Bolton was my grandfather's name.
If anyone is still interested in finding more family information, you can reach me at:
janninebolton@hotmail.com

Abraham Boulton / Leah Saxe (Sachse) / Mary Elliott MESS!

Hello folks.

This subject has been touched on lightly by several other old posts, but I think it's time to revive it and straighten out a complete mess.

I'm a descendant of ISABELLA BOULTON, born 14 Nov 1793 in Sorel, Quebec, who married JOHN LEVI ROSE, born 22 Aug 1788 in Sorel, Quebec, Canada. The Rose family genealogy has been extensively researched, and it is known that JOHN LEVI ROSE was the descendant of SAMUEL ROSE (1745-1789) a loyalist who left Dutchess county New York, and moved to Quebec. It's pretty much a given that with both Isabella and John being born in the town or camp at Sorel, both of their parents are likely to have been loyalists.

Isabella's parents were apparently one ABRAHAM BOULTON, and one LEAH SAXE. Leah Saxe may have actually been "Leah Sachse", possible daughter of loyalist Johannes Sachse (1733-1808) who settled in Highgate Vermont (thinking he was still in Quebec!). No records for Leah have been located, so perhaps she died young or remarried. In any event, Leah went from Dutchess New York to Sorel Quebec with SOMEBODY - presumably one Abraham Boulton. I think that the fact the the Rose family came from Dutchess at the same time is not a coincidence, and that Leah and Abraham migrated with them.

The "Abraham Boulton" that married Leah Sachse is generally attributed to being born in Wexford Ireland. He is the son of George Boulton who migrated to Philadelphia in the 1760's. When the war broke out he joined the loyalists, and after the war migrated to Canada, eventually settling in Elizabethtown Ontario - now Brockville. In 1792, Abraham married Mary Elliot in Elizabethtown. They had as many as 13 children together. And that's the problem! My ancestor Isabella was born far away in Quebec in 1793 - one year AFTER Abraham and Mary married!

I've heard that some folks explain this by saying Abraham had a child out of wedlock with Leah Sachse while he was married to Mary Elliott. I've also wondered about the possibility that he was LDS and had two wives. But neither explanation seems to fit.

In my opinion, the Abraham Boulton who married Leah Sachse is not the Wexford guy. He's another loyalist traveling through New York and Vermont with the same name. The problem is I haven't been able to find any other candidate Abraham Boulton (or Bolton, or Bolten). Except for maybe this one person.

-------------------

Bolton, Abraham, Salem (also given Hampshire Co.). Private, Capt. Hastings's co., Col. Henry Jackson's regt.; Continental Army pay accounts for service from Aug. 8, 1777, to June 6, 1779; enlisted Aug. 8, 1777; enlistment, 3 years; reported deserted June 6, 1779. [Also given William Bolten.]

------------------

This Abraham, who also went by the name of William, is a long shot, but maybe this discussion will act as a catalyst to dig the truth out of this mess.

Any comments are very appreciated.

Doug
Thank you very much for this very detailed reply. I really appreciate the background information, as this validates my thoughts that there had to be two different Abraham Boultons. Easy to see how there could be confusion between the uncle and nephew.

I have searched these boards many times looking for related postings, but I don't seem to be finding these old posts that you mention. Maybe it's "operator error" or perhaps they are no longer being indexed for search. I have to say that there are a good many public trees that are very messed up here, so I'm very grateful for the explanation.

Thank you so much for pointing me to the Ontario and National archives, and I will continue my research using these resources.

Warmest regards,

Doug

Hello all.

It's clear to me that with the two Abrahams having so many kids, it's easy to get the kids assigned to the wrong parents. From the 1973 William D. Reid book "The Loyalists in Ontario, The Sons and Daughters of the American Loyalists of Upper Canada", ISBN: 9780806314402, I came up with an independent list of the ABRAHAM/LEAH SAX (SACHSE) children.

Please note that the Reid book only has BAPTISM dates for many of the ABRAHAM/LEAH children.

Children of ABRAHAM BOULTON and LEAH SAX are:

(1) Ann
(2) Hannah bap. 12 Feb, 1789
(3) Henry bap. 12 Feb 1789
(4) Thomas
(5) Almira
(6) Rachel bap. 11 Mar 1792
(7) Abraham bap. 11 Mar 1792
(8) James bap. 22 May 1793
(9) Isabella bap. 14 Nov 1793
(10) Margaret
(11) Mary bap. 19 Dec 1797
(12) Hugh 1805
(13) Suzannah bap. 8 Apr 1806
(14) Jane bap. 30 Jan 1807
(15) Lydia bap. 7 Apr 1808

Perhaps this information will assist folks at keeping the 2 families correctly attributed.

Doug

You have mixed up several men with the name Abraham. This is very confusing to all of us but it has been straightened out in previous postings by Sharon Bolton and Bill Hull just to mention a few. these postings were done in Oct and Nov. of 1998. These old postings are better than my brief summary here. The Bolton family that you are talking about that ended up in eastern Ontario was from Wexford County Ireland. A George Bolton was born thereabt.1740. He married a woman in Ireland named Nancy Bickford. He had a brother named Abraham and also one named Henry. He may also have had 2 more brothers named Philip and Henry. I know little more about this family outside of George and Abraham. The 2 Bolton brothers came to New York state in the 1760s. George's brother Abraham married Leah Saxe. She was born in NYS and i believe i have her baptismal record. Anyway these 2 had many children and this is documented in the records of Rev. Bethume who was a loyalist chaplain earlier. Her the confusion starts because George had children also and as you know the family names were used over and over. George had a son who he named Abraham. This s/o of George married Mary Elliot. These 2 lived a very long life and had a pile of kids who also shared in the family names causing more research troubles. George died in 1794 in Elizabethtown in Leeds Co. Ontario. His son Abraham who married Mary Elliot is buried in Usborne Twp. Huron County Ontario. Off hanh i can't recall where the brother of George called Abraham ended up with Leah Saxe. The Archives of Ontario and the Canadian National Archives have extensive records on both. The Boltons lived in the Saratoga area of Albany Co NY before the revolution.

I'm trying to figure out more about my family, and so far I'm not having much luck. I'm more interested in my Irish heritage, as I'm told by my father (Mark David Bolton) that my grandfather's (william Bolton) family came from Ireland, most likely my great grandparents. I don't know any names other than these unfortunately, no one kept a family tree!

Hello Neil

Apologies for not replying earlier. I'm 99% sure this is not the same family. This Thomas Hulme was born and died in Burslem, Staffordshire. I have struggled to get back much further, as you know there are many Hulmes in the area, have a possible Sarah and Nancy as Thomas' sisters (no Elizabeth). So for the moment, I can't help - good luck with your research! Regards
