Neva E. (Rucker) Bomar b.1891 NE, disappeared after 1917 MT - her children are found in MT orphanage 1920

Seeking death info and any details on Neva E. (Rucker), especially after 1917.

Her youngest child was probably born in Montana in 1917, but by Jan 1920, her four children were all "Inmates" at the Montana State Children's Orphanage in Twin Bridges, Madison Co., Montana.

What happened to Neva? Why were her children placed in an orphanage when their father was still alive, and they had family in Montana and Nebraska? After their father remarried, why were the children not reunited with him?

NEVA's info:

Neva E. (Rucker) Bomar, born Dec 1891 in Nebraska.
- In 1900 Census, she is living with her parents and three older brothers in Custer County, South Dakota.
- In 1910, she is newly married to Jim Bomar and living near his family in Sheridan County, Nebraska.
- Her children are born in 1910, 1913, 1915, and 1917, probably in Montana. After 1917, I've lost her.

Husband: James Walter Samuel "Jim" Bomar, born 1887 in Hay Springs, Sheridan Co, Nebraska to Wm. Henry & Mary (Swanger) Bomar. He later remarried to Mary G. Loch, and adopted two girls: Valgene and Patricia. In the 1930 Census, he and Mary are living in Sheridan County, Nebraska. Jim dies April 1972.

Neva and Jim's Children:
1) Neva Marie Bomar, born 4 Sep 1910 probably in MT, married Andrew Bernaki in 1957, probably divorced abt. 1968 in Connecticut, died Aug 1991 in Alliance, Stark Co, Ohio.
2)Hazel Bomar, born 1913 - possibly adopted by SMOCK family
3) Frances Bomar, born 1915
4) Walter E. Bomar, born 1917 probably in MT, adopted by SMOCK family, enlisted in WWII in 1942 while living in Pennsylvania.

Neva's Father: Wesley Rucker, born abt. Jan 1844 in Ohio, died 31 Jan 1899 in Hot Springs, South Dakota. With his first wife, Sarah A., he had children: Charles Sumner Rucker, Amy Lillian "Lula" (Rucker) Virtue, and Hollace/Hollis Nelson Rucker. With his second wife, Mary/Mollie/Mattie, he had children: Harvey Clifford Rucker, Theron Edward Rucker, Glenn Owen Rucker, and Neva E. Rucker.

Many of Neva and Jim's siblings lived in Nebraska and Montana.
I can't find Jim Bomar, or most of his family, in 1920 Census.

I have several photos of this family, and info I'm willing to share.

All leads GREATLY appreciated.

I'm not an Ancestry member, so I can't access the url you gave. Everything I have is posted on my RootsWeb tree:

http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&d...

I also have the 1799 marriage date. But I got that from someone else (and no telling where they got it). That suggests she was 14 at the time of the marriage -- not too terribly unusual, even though most people did marry later. Maybe they jumped the broom in 1799 and saw the preacher in 1807.

No one knows who his parents are. The only records anyone has so far found are the 1850 census in Tennessee and his will.

Also, I just found a record on Ancestry, showing William J and Sally Ferguson's marriage date as 7 Dec 1807. Here is the link:

http://search.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/sse.dll?db=va2&h=1523...

Soooo, does that mean William J was married BEFORE he married Sally? He had to have been or had a child out of wedlock. My John was born before 1807. I had previously had their marriage listed as 1799, which meant my John would have to have been born in 1800, as I originally thought.

Now with this new date of 1807, it puts a total kink in everything.

My great-great grandmother was Sarah Ann Elizabeth Bomar. She was born 24 Apr 1834 in Tennessee and died 9 March 1890 in Weatherford, Parker County, Texas. She married Patrick Henry Vivrett on 1 Sep 1853. I descend from their son, William Randolph Vivrett.

The problem I have is Sarah Ann Elizabeth Bomar's parentage. I have found information that states it was a "John" Bomar, son of our "famous" Reverend William Johnson Bomar. Of course, he is the one with more than one wife, and possibly four wives.

I have read your theory about the Reverend only having two wives. I understand it, and feel you may be on the right track. My problem is....who the heck was "John" Bomar's mother? Was it Sally Ferguson? Elizabeth Terry? Or one of the two "maybe" wives?

I do not know John's DOB, but I have his date of death as 1840 in Illinois. I have no idea if this is accurate.

My question to you is: do you have ANY information about a son of Reverend William Johnson Bomar, named "John". Please let me know, as I am completely at a loss here.

FYI, I have the Vivrett Family Bible, which has Sarah Ann Elizabeth's date of birth, marriage and death, so I know they are accurate.

Thanks so very much in advance.

Kathie
Re: Bomar/Younger

I remember visiting my great grandmother Maggie Bomar Henley(wife of Herschell Armstead Bomar) across the Chattahoochee River from Cambellton in the 1950's and taking the ferry to get across the river. I found the documentation that I made when I was at the grave site along the side of the Old River Road in 1975 after piecing together some of the headstones. I think it is a bit more precise than the note my aunt gave me.

Sacred
To the Memory of
ARMSTEAD BOMAR SR
Departed this life
Jan. 15 1840
in the 72 year of his age.

IN
Memory of
Fielding B.
Son of
Parker M. and
Mary Rice
Born in Oct. 22, 1825
Died in NOv. 30, 1833

Elisha P. Bomar
departed this life
July 29, 1839
in the 23 year of his age

I think the above Elisha is the son of Armstead Bomar Sr. and that Fielding is the son of Mary (Bomar) Rice who is the daughter of Armstead Bomar Sr.

My grandfathers sister (Florrie Bomar Gibson) also showed me the Enon Church Cemetery at Cliftondale on Stonewall Tell Road that had a large metal grave marker with the inscription
Elisha P. Bomar
April 25 1815
to
April 4 1867

I assumed the above was the son of William Bomar and Barbara Powell Bomar and the husband of Elizabeth Armstead Rice Bomar who is buried at Chapel Hill. I do not remember seeing or documenting a grave marker for a Elisha Bomar at Chapel Hill.

Just in case you didn't get the e-mail I sent you this morning:

Hi, Eleanor....

I was married to a "High" for 35 years, and I am descended from the Bomars. GGG grandmother was Mary Bomar daughter of Bibby (son of John). Bibby married Anne Bomar, daughter of William and Ann Hurt, so that makes you and I related in some bizarre way. :-) Here's what I have from the High Family genealogy book:

Alexander is buried in Mt. Zion Church Cemetery, Fair Forest, SC (Directions to the Cemetery - take I-26 south to Hwy 29 to second traffic light, turn right on Blackstock Rd. and go over I-85 to Mt. Zion Church Road. Turn left for 2-3 miles to Mt. Zion Church.

The above is according to Jim Miller of Mountville, SC.

I spent some time with Dr. Bill Bomar of Greenville this summer. He and I are fifth cousins. Great guy.

Sincerely,
Brownie MacKie

My family history told that Armstead died at/near Old Campbellton and in his will he cites that he owned the ferry across the river there. This squares with the posting of Bomar graves there.

Re: William Johnson Bomar (1776-1854) & his wives

I thought I had already posted the following, but apparently not. Here are my thoughts (and references) on why I believe William Johnson Bomar was only married twice. (Kind of hate to let go of that vision of the old Campbellite minister surviving wife after wife and propagating forever!)

(1) Most Internet family trees show place of death as
Dickerson, Overton County, TN, USA (or mistakenly as
Dickerson County, which never existed) and, at one
time, there was a tree that showed a Tennessee burial
place. Austin Street Cemetery (Sherman, Grayson
County, TX) index shows a burial for W. J. Bomar, died
June 1854 (see
http://ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/usgenweb/tx/grayson/cemetery/aus...).
Tennessee records show that William Wilshire Bomar's
widow, Elvira Willis Bomar, returned to Tennessee with
their five children shortly after his death (see
DeKalb County Administrators Settlement, 1854-1865
page 2: "pg 78, 26 Feb 1855"). If WJB's body had been
transported to Tennessee, this would have been a
logical time for it. Given the documented confusion
(see following notes) over the details of the lives of
the various William Bomars, I tend to believe that WJB
is buried in Texas.

(2) Ancestry.com Millenium file shows DOB 1770 (7 Jun
2005), but his age shown on the 1850 census would
support the 1776 date.

(3) Old family trees show William Johnson Bomar with
four wives: (a) Sally Ferguson, (b) Elizabeth Terry,
(c) Joanna Beasley, and (d) ? Willis. This has
apparently been traveling genealogy circles long
before the internet. As early as 1914, it was
published that WJB had four wives (see Frank W.
Johnson, A History of Texas and Texans. Revised and
edited by Eugene C Barker and Ernest William Barker.
Chicago & New York: The American Historical Society,
1914. pp. 1807-1808). I continue to believe that he
was only married twice. Here are the clues that cause
me to come to that conclusion:

(a) His second wife died in 1841. The following March
he filed a Deed of Trust, giving property to the
children of his second wife, likely their inheritance
from their mother. In the 1850 census for HenryCounty, Tennessee, WJB is found in the household of
his son, David Terry. There is no sign of his young
wife and children in this household or the neighboring
Bomar households.

(b) In the fall of 1853, according to the account of
one of WJB's granddaughters, five of his sons came to
Texas with their families and an uncle "Tommy Terry"
(see "A Letter from Mrs. Ledbetter" Frontier Times,
Vol 5, No 7, Apr 1928, p. 299). In this same published
letter, Jennettie Bomar Ledbetter stated, "The
family's health was so bad in Cooke and Grayson
counties a friend, Dr. J. W. Hudson, advised my father
to move to San Saba county, so he came here in August,
1857 . . ." William Wilshire Bomar died in Texas in
1854 and is buried in the Austin Street Cemetery in
Sherman, Texas. Dr Nathaniel Terry, another of the
brothers, moved to Gainesville, Texas, where he set up
his medical practice and remained until his death in
1898. Spencer Edmond Bomar remained in Sherman and
died there in 1900. James Riley Bomar, Mrs.
Ledbetter's father, moved to San Saba County where he
lived until his death in 1917. David Terry Bomar
presumably brought his family to Texas and returned to
Tennessee before the 1860 census (perhaps at the same
time as Elvira Willis Bomar). There is no mention of
WJB coming to Texas with his sons, but the burial
record found in the Sherman Public Library for W J
Bomar, died 1854, would indicate that he did [see Note
(1) above].

(c) If WJB had a young wife and twin daughters in
1843, it becomes less likely that he would have
married a fourth time between 1843 and his death in
1854. Further, the attribution of "? Willis" as Wife 4
is an apparent confusion of William Johnson Bomar and
his son William Wilshire Bomar, whose wife is Elvira
Willis. This, to my satisfaction, omits the fourth
marriage.

(d) Some trees that show Joanna Beasley as Wife 3,
show a marriage date of December 1841, three months
after the death of his second wife. Considering his
age, the number of his adult children, the brief time
lapse between one wife's death and the next marriage, and the fact that he was living with a son in 1850, I
find this unlikely. There are no records to support a
third marriage for WJB, and, additionally, Joanna
Beasley is shown elsewhere with her children in the
1850 census [see note (3g) below].

(e) Ann Kelly (25 Jun 2007) wrote: "I have a picture
handed down in the family of one of his twin daughters
by Beasley named Victoria who married a Spickard. It
is labeled that way." This communication supported my
notion that, although I do not believe WJB was ever
married to Joanna Beasley, she may have married a
relative of WJB named William Bomar.

(f) There is a RootsWeb tree by Jackie Ginn that shows
Joanna Beasley married first to James Beasley (6
children, including the twins attributed to WJB) and
second to William A Bomar (see
http://wc.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=jackiek...,
retrieved 5 Aug 2007). Ginn shows Joanna's first
husband died between 1842 and 1850.

(g) E-mail from Jackie Ginn (6 Aug 2007) lists census
information she located for Joanna Beasley:
1850
North of Cumberland and East of Caney Fork Rivers,
Smith, TN page 229, 4 Sep 1850
239 239 Joannah Beasley 45 $500 TN
Elizabeth 18 TN
William 17 TN
Mahala H 14 TN
Masey 11 female TN
Victoria 7 TN
Viannah 7 TN

1860
Dist 15, Jackson, TN page 18 9, Jun 1860
132 132 Beasley, Joan M 54 farmer $3700 $2290 TN
Mahaley 24 TN
Viney 17 TN
Victoria 17 TN

1870
Dist 15, Jackson, TN page 11 31, Aug 1870
73 73 Beasly, J M, 64 female farmer $3700 $600 TNApple, Hendon 32 NC
Mahaley A 34 TN
Burton, J P, 25 TN
Viana 26 TN
Victoria 3 TN
Spickard, male 8/12 TN
Butler, Mollie 15 TN

1880
Dist 5, Jackson, TN ED 57 sheet 24D 14 Jun 1880
boarding with Scott Fox family
200 200 Beasley, Joanna 74 widow boarder TN VA VA

(h) Everyone's family tree is full of stories that
turn out to be partially or completely false. At some
point someone made a guess and it eventually came to
be accepted as fact. The 1914 publication that gave a
history for Dr. Nathaniel Terry apparently depended on
this sort of information, mentioning four wives and
family illness that caused the family to move from
Tennessee. A brief look at death dates indicate that
the family health problems began after moving to
Texas, and all the information summarized above
suggest that he was only married twice. I tend to rely
on Mrs. Ledbetter's letter, in that she made the trip
from Tennessee to Texas as a very young child and grew
up hearing her father talk about the family migration.

Thanks for posting that info, Brownie. It's worth mentioning that the POB for Thomas Edmond Bomar was misinterpreted by someone down the line. Actual POB is Alexandria, DeKalb County, TN. Alexandria, Louisiana would have been a familiar place to people in East Texas. No doubt someone said he was born in Alexandria, and the state of Louisiana was incorrectly assumed.

In the past few days I have corresponded with several people concerning WJB and his wives. I now believe I have sufficient information to conclude that he was only married twice. The notes I have attached to his record are as follows:

(1) Most Internet family trees show place of death as Dickerson, Overton County, TN, USA (or mistakenly as Dickerson County, which never existed) and, at one time, there was a tree that showed a Tennessee burial place. Austin Street Cemetery (Sherman, Grayson County, TX) index shows a burial for W. J. Bomar, died June 1854 (see http://ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/usgenweb/tx/grayson/cemetery/aus...). Tennessee records show that William Wilshire Bomar's widow, Elvira Willis Bomar, returned to Tennessee with their five children shortly after his death (see DeKalb County Administrators Settlement, 1854-1865 page 2: "pg 78, 26 Feb 1855"). If WJB's body had been transported to Tennessee, this would have been a logical time for it. Given the documented confusion (see following notes) over the details of the lives of the various William Bomars, I tend to believe that WJB is buried in Texas.

(2) Ancestry.com Millenium file shows DOB 1770 (7 Jun 2005), but his age shown on the 1850 census would support the 1776 date.

(3) Old family trees show William Johnson Bomar with four wives: (a) Sally Ferguson, (b) Elizabeth Terry, (c) Joanna Beasley, and (d) ? Willis. This has apparently been traveling genealogy circles long before the internet. As early as 1914, it was published that WJB had four wives (see Frank W. Johnson, A History of Texas and Texans. Revised and edited by Eugene C Barker and Ernest William Barker. Chicago & New York: The American Historical Society, 1914. pp. 1807-1808). I continue to believe that he was only married twice. Here are the clues that cause me to come to that conclusion:

(a) His second wife died in 1841. The following March he filed a Deed of Trust, giving property to the children of his second wife, likely their inheritance from their mother. In the 1850 census for Henry County, Tennessee, WJB is found in the household of his son, David Terry.

(b) In the fall of 1853, according to the account of one of WJB's granddaughters, five of his sons came to Texas with their families and an uncle "Tommy Terry" (see "A Letter from Mrs. Ledbetter" Frontier Times, Vol 5, No 7, Apr 1928, p. 299). In this same published letter, Jennettie Bomar Ledbetter stated, "The family's health was so bad in Cooke and Grayson counties a friend, Dr. J. W. Hudson, advised my father to move to San Saba county, so he came here in August, 1857 . . ." William Wilshire Bomar died in Texas in 1854 and is buried in the Austin Street Cemetery in Sherman, Texas. Dr Nathaniel Terry, another of the brothers, moved to Gainesville, Texas, where he set up his medical practice and remained until his death in 1898. Spencer Edmond Bomar remained in Sherman and died there in 1900. James Riley Bomar, Mrs. Ledbetter's father, moved to San Saba County where he lived until his death in 1917. David Terry Bomar presumably brought his family to Texas and returned to Tennessee before the 1860 census (perhaps at the same time as Elvira Willis Bomar). There is no mention of WJB coming to Texas with his sons, but the burial record found in the Sherman Public Library for W J Bomar, died 1854, would indicate that he did [see Note (1) above].

(c) If WJB had a young wife and twin daughters in 1843, it becomes less likely that he would have married a fourth time between 1843 and his death in 1854. Further, the attribution of "? Willis" as Wife 4 is an apparent confusion of William Johnson Bomar and his son William Wilshire Bomar, whose wife is Elvira Willis. This, to my satisfaction, omits the fourth marriage.

(d) Some trees that show Joanna Beasley as Wife 3, show a marriage date of December 1841, three months after the death of his second wife. Considering his age, the number of his adult children, the brief time lapse between one wife's death and the next marriage, and the fact that he was living with a son in 1850, I find this unlikely. There are no records to support a third marriage for WJB, and, additionally, Joanna Beasley is shown elsewhere with her children in the 1850 census [see note (3g) below].

(e) Ann Kelly (25 Jun 2007) wrote: "I have a picture handed down in the family of one of his twin daughters by Beasley named Victoria who married a Spickard. It is labeled that way." This communication supported my notion that, although I do not believe WJB was ever married to Joanna Beasley, she may have married a relative of WJB named William Bomar.

(f) There is a RootsWeb tree by Jackie Ginn that shows Joanna Beasley married first to James Beasley (6 children, including the twins attributed to WJB) and second to William A Bomar (see http://wc.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=jackiek..., retrieved 5 Aug 2007). Ginn shows Joanna's first husband died between 1842 and 1850.

(g) E-mail from Jackie Ginn (6 Aug 2007) lists census information she located for Joanna Beasley:
1850
North of Cumberland and East of Caney Fork Rivers, Smith, TN page 229, 4 Sep 1850
239 239 Joannah Beasley 45 $500 TN
Elizabeth 18 TN
William 17 TN
Mahala H 14 TN
Masey 11 female TN
Victoria 7 TN
Viannah 7 TN

1860
Dist 15, Jackson, TN page 18 9, Jun 1860
132 132 Beasley, Joan M 54 farmer $3700 $2290 TN
Mahaley 24 TN
Viney 17 TN
Victoria 17 TN

1870
Dist 15, Jackson, TN page 11 31, Aug 1870
73 73 Beasly, J M, 64 female farmer $3700 $600 TN
Apple, Hendon 32 NC
Mahaley A 34 TN
Burton, J P, 25 TN
Viana 26 TN
Victoria 3 TN
Spickard, male 8/12 TN
Butler, Mollie 15 TN

1880
Dist 5, Jackson, TN ED 57 sheet 24D 14 Jun 1880 boarding with Scott Fox family
200 200 Beasley, Joanna 74 widow boarder TN VA VA

(h) Everyone's family tree is full of stories that turn out to be partially or completely false. At some point someone made a guess and it eventually came to be accepted as fact. The 1914 publication that gave a history for Dr. Nathaniel Terry apparently depended on this sort of information, mentioning four wives and family illness that caused the family to move from Tennessee. A brief look at death dates indicate that the family health problems began after moving to Texas, and the data summarized above suggest that he was only married twice. I tend to rely on Mrs. Ledbetter's letter, in that she made the trip from Tennessee to Texas as a very young child and grew up hearing her father talk about the family migration.

William Johnson Bomar (1776-1854) & his wives

William Johnson Bomar haunts me again. After his parents and last two wives (whom I don't believe were his wives) disappeared from all the internet trees, they are appearing again. I am corresponding with a woman who has a picture of one of Joanna Beasley's children (Wife 3 according to some databases) with William Johnson Bomar written on the back as the child's father. I recently found an internet database showing a William Johnson Bomar with a DOB of 1801 in NC, but no DOD and no wife listed. As far as I know, no one has yet been able to establish the parentage of 1776 WJB, though early databases showed him as the son of Reuben, brother of Edward (father of 1801 WJB). To my knowledge, 1776 WJB does not appear on any wills or documents except for an 1842 Deed of Trust, where he is distributing property to his children by his second wife shortly after her death. A recent appearance on the internet databases is a DOB for Joanna Beasley of 1806, though that same database still couples her with 1776 WJB. Now that we have a more age appropriate WJB as a possible husband for Joanna Beasley, I hope someone will take the ball on this one. I am currently residing on the other side of the world, which makes it easy for me to pass the hot potato.

My name is William Russell Bomar. My grantfather's (Lee Edward Bomar) sister (Florrie Bomar Gibson) took me to an old burial site in Old Campbell/Fulton county in late 1975 along Old River Road near the old town of Campbellton. The cemetery was several yards off the road and in the woods. Large trees had grown up in the cemetery. There were several burial sites (sunken ground) and several broken (in many pieces) markers. Florrie Bomar had visited the site on July 10, 1960 and recorded (I have the paper she wrote the information on) the following from the markers that were readable at that time:

Armstead Bomar Sr.
departed this life
Jan 15, 1840
72 years old

Fielding B. Terry "appears to be" Kibble/Keeble Terry's ( the one born 1793-1798) nephew, most likely uncle Jeremiah Terry's son born in GA, as Uncle Keeble Terry had no children. Peter R. Proby and James M. Proby are Kibble's half brothers. Kibble's father Daniel Terry m. widow Dorothy (Ransom) Proby abt 1793 right after the death of her father Richard Ransom in 1792 in Gloucester Co VA. This info from lawsuit papers in Halifax Co VA dated 1819 to 1824. James M. Proby named the children of Robert H. Terry in his 1861 will in Bedford Co Tn. That makes Robert "kin" to the Proby and Terry brothers.

I am working on the complete Hankins family tree as a single source. No one person can do this, it takes the help and effort from many people. I started to number Hankins by the first names as they're so many and duplication ran rampant and many descendants were claiming the wrong ancestor (right name wrong person). Census’s from 1850 on ward do help but still do to usage of middle names, initials, abbreviated names the wrong person can be tracked. This is far from a fool proof research and the living often have those hidden key’s that solve the problem. I do post differing opinions when they seem valid and change what seems to be updated and corrected information. I try and keep those who provide all the information up to the living with updates and other’s who are working in their area. I hope you be part of this research so far 106 people have made this tree what it is today.
