Hi, my name is Sonnet Bonelli and i have been on this site off and on since 2001 seeking Bonelli family via St.Thomas, of Italian heritage. I have connected with KKWallace and Assyria and established that we are more than likely cousins. I too had an uncle in CA and I am wondering if he is your uncle too. His name was Dennis and he passed away last year. His father was Rapheal Bonelli, brother of Edward Bonelli.

Thanks I will go and try the place that has those photos in French Town the next time I'm on the island. Theodore O'Mahoney did own and run the saloon at the hotel and he also had a cafe across the street at what is now the Post Office. The story is that he lost the ownership to Lockhart in a card game but stayed on as manager working there.
His originals are very difficult to find - you would think finding someone named O'Mahoney in the West Indies would be easier! I appreciate any stories, legends or rumors about him. He also had 17 children with 7 different woman (those are the ones we know about). It really must have been a wild time.

Assyria is my sister. Dalton is my grandfather, born in 1923. He is some of the first born. There were old stories that he fathered close to 52 children (not all surviving to adulthood). He had 12 with Amanda Mercer, my great grandmother, like you pointed out. From what my grandmother told me (Dalton's wife) Amanda M. was a larger woman around 250 lbs. Anyone who knew Edward knew he was a short slim man about 5 7 if that. She would say jokingly that he could handle big women.

Now, what's more interesting, both my father's parents has European bloodline very close to them. My dad's grandfather (Edward) and his other grandfather (Aluvis Schneider; Roy Schneider's father. His father was a German immigrant to St. Croix and later moved to St. Thomas.

I've heard tales about the Grand as well. If you ever get a chance to go to that bar in French Town next to Zima's, there are a lot of old pictures hanging on the walls; many of the Grand Hotel with the name Mahoney Hotel or Mahoney's, I don't really remember. From what i've been told by my grandfather, his grandfather is who initially constructed the place and ran it for a few years before selling it off to someone and from there Alfred Lockhart (the original patriarch of the Lockhart family) bought the place. The third floor at some point was either destroyed by fire or a hurricane. I believe this is when I changed hands and A. H. Lockhart made renovations.

Well Napoleon sent a group of Bonellis to the Dominican Republic where the spelling was changed to Bonnelly. My grandfather's brother became President for awhile there - his name was Rafael Filiberto Bonnelly. My grandfather was murdered before he married my grandmother, so my dad's last name was Perez (after my grandmother), and therefore my last name is Perez. However, my dad literally just found the Bonelli half of the family last week, and he's already traveled to the dominican republic to meet a lot of them. He also met some in Miami- he plans on making trips to puerto rico, italy, and california soon to meet the rest. They're planning a family reunion with over 300 Bonellis soon also. Do you know anything about this, I'm curious since you're in California?

Hello,
I know these posts are several years old but prehaps you still look here for messages.
I found your info on the Bonelli family from St Thomas because I am researching the Grand Hotel. My Great grandfather (Theodore O'Mahoney) either owned or worked at (or both) the hotel before the Lockhart ownership. (He may have lost the ownership to Lockhart in a card game.) I am interested in the history of the hotel and it's originals and it seems that Edward Bonelli senior from Italy built it and maybe was the original owner. My oral histories tell me that Theodore lived with a foreign family while growing up but I am unsure of the name of the family so any info you have on the hotel and it's early history would be helpful.

Bonelli Family from St. Thomas, VI

I am a descendant from the vast Bonelli family clan from ST. Thomas, VI. My paternal grandfather's name was Raphael Bonelli and he migrated to NYC around 1925 and was born in St. THomas around 1895, and he had a brother named Edward, a musician. My connection to the Bonelli family is blood, not marriage. I am very interested in this genealogy research by Assyria Bonelli and Kim Wallace and would like to be added to your information search. Please respond.

To Kim Wallace, I apologize for not responding previously but I just gave birth to my first child in late April. Anyway, sounds as if you grandmother's half-bro in NYC is my greatuncle Leo. I checked the stats with my father, and it sounds very plausible. I have yet to contact Leo to check it out, but I will do so on my next visit to NYC and attempt to close the circle on this relative connection. Uncle Leo's brother was my paternal grandfather Rapheal. Any other news to share?

The following are some corrections to my original posting from 24 Feb 2000:

1. The Italian spelling of Bonelli is Boniello

2. Anna Antonia Boniello was born in 1822 in Marsicovetere, PZ, Basilicata, Italy

3. Her husband (Donato Lapetina) was born in 1815 in Marsicovetere, PZ, Basilicata, Italy

4. Donato Lapetina was the son of Giuseppe Lapetina & Lucrezia Toscano.

Regards
Paul Oliver

I am looking for my natural father. The only info I have is that his last name was Bonelli. I think his first name started with an "L". He was living in philadelphia pa in 1953 and 54. He has family on his sisters side with the last name Rodriguez, I think. Any info on L. Bonelli would be greatly appreciated. I was born sept. 1954. I would love to at least know what part of Italy my family is from. My mother did not give me much info and is no longer with me. I do know he somehow worked in the clothing industry in PA in those years. Thank you so much for any and all help. This is a lifelong search.

Do you know if Anna had a sister, cousins etc. named Josephine Bonelli who was married to a James Aiello. She came to the U.S. sometime in 1897 to Delancey Pa. but I think then went to Rochester N.Y. She had a son named Frank Aiello and a daughter named Maria Aiello maybe three other children. Both Maria and Frank came to the U.S.

Does any of this sound familiar.

Thanks,

Sharon
