Chesley Bonestell

While I do not know if he was related to any of you who have left posts on this website, I presume that many of you are at least aware of the most famous person named Bonestell; that was Chesley Bonestell, the most well-known astronomical and space painter of all time. His ancestors came from Holland around 1715 and settled on the Hudson River in New York. I am a collaborator on a new book, to be released in May 2001, entitled THE ART OF CHESLEY BONESTELL. You may wish to take a look at it when it arrives at your bookstore; it includes a lengthy biography of Bonestell. There is also some interesting historical information about his family line at the following URL: www.berkeley.edu:5900/lectures/jefferson/jef-hist1.html. All the best, Melvin Schuetz, Archivist, Bonestell Space Art (www.bonestell.org)

Re: Chesley Bonestell

Chesley was the son of Chesley Knight Bonestell, Sr. and the grandson of Louis H. Bonestell. The grandfather, Louis, was one of nine children of Jacob and Lura Bonestell of Greene County, NY. He traveled to California in 1849 in search of gold, and stayed. I have gathered quite a bit of information on the Bonestell family. If anyone is interested, please contact me.

Karen Izzo
kizzo@optonline.net

Hello Linda,

You note that you have a James Egbert Bonestel who was in Panama and contracted yellow fever. You also not that he died in San Francisco.

I have a reference to an E. J. Bonestell who died in Panama on May 28, 1905, most likely of yellow fever. I am not sure that your realtive could have made it back to the U.S. with yellow fever. Once the disease was contracted, death occured rather quickly. Did he survive yellow fever and then make it back to the U.S.?

In any event, if you think this E. J. Bonestell could be your relative, please contact me. Thanks!!!

Cheers,

Dave Ellison

Bonestell is a name I often run through geneology forums: My mother was adopted by William Arneill and Edith R. Bonestell Arneill, Married in Santa Buenaventura (Now Ventura) Calif. Edith was born in San Francisco (if i recall correctly off the top of my head), about 1873, daughter of C.D. Bonestell and Nancy Ann Smith. I am of the impression C.D. was signicantly older and also married before in NY state, to possibly Elizabeth Faulk (spelling?). There were children in NY also. If you get this message e-mail me I'll look up the dates places whatever, that I've found and fill you in. C.D. was quite the adventerous man!

Charlotte, I have so little to go on right now and sounds like you have far more than me. I know my gggrf George Nelson Bonestell was born in 1830 in NY and came west with his wife Elizabeth to MI>IA>NE and that some of the family ended up in CA. In all my research I cannot find who George's parents were or the county/area where he was born. Do you have his name in any of your research or a Burton Bonestell by any chance? What area of NY are you researching? I am looking for clues to solve this mystery family puzzle. Look forward to hearing from you. Linda

I have spent alot of time, and even at the Mormon library in Mesa Az. where we winter. So far very little help. I have been told it is either french or german. I am originally from South Dakota, which has a town named Bonesteel. I was advised that is a derivative of Bonestell. Any help you can give me would certainly be appreciated. I have found on the interent about 30 Bonestells, of which some are my three sons, mother and of course mine and a first cousin named Jack that lives in Ca. thanks Bob

I don't think anyone else in the world is researching this surname. I would like to hear from anyone with Bonestell family connections. I have traced my great, great grandfather George Bonestell(or Bonesteel) back to NY where he was born in 1830. I know family went to WI, IA, NE and CA. but can find no connections. He married Elizabeth Falk, also born in NY and they had several children. Look forward to hearing from you.
