What I would like to know is the name of the children of this Henry Kroppen. Did he ever immigrate to America or is he just the father of some of the Kroppens that did immigrate to the Plato and other areas. I know there was one Kroppen that married an Ehrke n the Lester Prairie area. My tree has Herman Kroppen on it and he immgrated to Plato MN in 1894 and I believe a Peter Hoof came at the same time he did (according to immigration papers) Then I found a Katherine Kroppen that married a Peter Hoof and lived at Bergen Twnship McLeod Co. Please get back to me. You can email me at pannkass@yahoo.com or reply here.

I don't think I can help with ancestors going back into Germany. But, I came from the Carver/McLeod area of Minnesota and I have a Herman Kroppen on a tree I'm working on. He only had 2 children A boy also Herman and a daughter that married a Mueller and lived at Hamburg, then married a Molash and later a Stock. I believe Herman was the only Kroppen that came at the time he did, but I know there were several in the Plato area already. I'm beginning to think the ones the immigrated were all decendants of the Henry Bitters you mentioned. Please get back to me and we can work this out. You can email me direct at pannkass@yahoo.com or reply here.

Continue to look for parents / family of Joseph Bongard

Joseph Bongard was born in Germany in 1842....immigrated to US sometime before 1865 when he married Lida Meadows in Adams County, Illinois. Joseph and Lida had one son James in 1871. It is believed that she may have died in childbirth. Joseph remarried a second time to Alvina (I have seen it as Lavina in records) Meiser. Alvina was born in 1852. I do not have the date of Alvina and Joseph's marraige. They had 4 children...Joseph born 1873, Alice born 1875, Katie born 1877, and my ggrandmother Bessie born 1881. Does this sound anywhere near familiar to anyone researching the Bongard family???? I would appreciate any further info that anyone can help me with! My email is cheridarn@yahoo.com.

Dawn,
I'm related to a Joseph Bongard, married to Catherine Schneider, born in Alceice-Lorraine abt.1827-28. He, his wife, and children, Adeline 6, Henry 4, and Emily 71/2 months, departed from LaHarve, France Dec. 22,1865 aboard the ship "The Jeannie-Alice" bound for New Orleans. I would like to see the Bongard info from Germany to see is there is a connection. Thanks, Jim Cook

Hello Dawn -
in an earlier posting to this Board you mentioned that
you have quite some information about the BONGARD
family in Germany. My question - are you referring to
the Hanau Artilleryman Conrad Bongard who settled
in the Bay of Quinte in 1784, or are you talking about
a different twig of the Bongard tree.
As there are other origins of the Bongard's mentioned
on this Board, it would be nice to know with which one
you identify.
Thanks for your reply to this Board.
John Merz, researching Hessian soldiers of the AmRev.

With having the name Susan CARR come up in the
previous posting, I would like to contribute a section
quoted in my book"The Hessians of Upper Canada",

p.150: "Bongard married a widow CARR, whose husband
had died as prisoner in Virginia. Bongard eventuallu settled
in the 5th Township, where he died Jan. 1840, aged 89.
His wife Susan died Feb. 1846, aged 98."

p.151: Researchers Question:
"Are we possibly dealing with two wives, Susan Carr,
and Susannah Houseman? Or Susan Carr is Susannah Houseman? The first three children perhaps the children
of Carr's or Houseman's first husband and adopted by Conrad?

The answer may be that Carr was the maiden name of Susannah Houseman, Susannah being the German
equivalent of Susan. Another interesting fact emerges
when studying the military records of the Hessen-Hanau
Artillery Corps under the command of Captain Pausch.
There was a cannoneer Ludwig Karl Theodor Haussmann, who according to the Journal of Captain Pausch, lost his
life at the battle of Saratoga in Oct. 1777, but according to the military records was only wounded and taken prisoner, and consequently ended up with Conrad Bongard at the
prison camp of Charlottesville, Virginia. According to a
letter by descendant Susan Vickerman in Florida, Susan
Carr's husband died while imprisoned in Virginia.
Perhaps that was the Hanau Artillery man Hausemann."

Susan Vickerman also wrote that Susan Carr was, supposedly, a native of Philadelphia, and that she married Conrad Bongard in Philadelphia (no proof of this). Mary
is the first child born 1770, then Dorthy, and then Bernard
(No birthdates for these children). The next child is
Christiana (1788), and there are five more born after this; the last one born inn 1800."

Who was Susan Carr, that the $64 question?
John Merz, researching Hessian soldiers of the AmRev.
http://home.cogeco.ca/~hessian
