Yes, but Zedekiah wasn't a descendant of George. The topic is "descendants of George Bonham, who were revolutionary war soldiers or patriots." Absalom Bonham was also a revolutionary war soldier, but he's not a descendant of George either.

Sorry, thought I replied yesterday but apparently, my reply was not recorded.

I know of no George Bonham descendants who participated in the American Revolution. If you kow of any male descendants of George Bonham at all, would like to have them join our Bonham family Y-DNA project at FTDNA.

While some say that George Bonham was the father of Nicholas Bonham who was the father of Hezekiah Bonham, that is disputed and frankly, not likely.

There are a number of "purported", Hezekiah Bonham descendants who DID participate in the American Revolution, most on the Whig side and one on the Tory side. I say "purported", because Hezekiah´s likely 2nd bunch of children have not been "officially" recognized as such, though they were likely his children by his 2nd marriage.

Whether Hezekiah Bonham´s descendants or not, Absalom, Malakiah and Uriah Bonham all fought on the Whig side and another Malakiah fought on the Tory side.

No problem,
The trail gets long and hard some times and when the answers come they seem so easy that you wonder why you did not see them to start with. As a point of interest, the informant on the death cert for Martha Jones Bonham was I.P. Black. I think this was the husband of Talitha Bonham Black, the second daughter of Nehemiah and Martha Sellers Bonham, and as such the step son-in-law of Martha Jones Bonham.

Joe

Thanks for the info,
I was able to find the death cert for Martha Jones Bonham that you mentioned. I wonder if divorce, as you stated, was the reason for the new wife though. I see on the census reports that the Martha that was the mother in 1860 and 1870 was born in 1838, I then found, on Find-A-Grave, a grave in Buncombe County NC for Martha Bonham (b. 1838 - d. 1876). This, I think, would be the original Martha (Sellers) as the last child I find evidence of being her's was Charles Bonham, born 1874. The next of Nehemiah's children, on the census reports, was L.V. Bonham (Vashti) (b. 1879).
This leads me to believe that Martha Sellers died in the interim, about 1876.
What do you think?

Joe

Hi, The info I was able to put it together was Ancestry Census and death records and I was able to connect the trail
from the combination of info.I found a death cert. for
Martha which had a mispelling of her mothers name but the
correct father. The death cert. had her mother as Polly
Wooley, which should have been Worley. His first wife went
by her maiden name after they seperated but as I am
discovering that divorced women it that area took back the
maiden name unlike if they were widowed. On the 1850 census
there was a transcription error on her name, she was living
Isaac Jones and her mother and a few siblings, what the error
was is that they had her last name as Javia along with her
younger sister. But her sister had no such name on the end of her transcription.Martha Sellers was his first marriage.
Finally after a bit of searching I entered the info I found
it to public tree's and I came up with a name that matched
the info I had.
No problem at all. The names recorded in Ancestry.com's census index are:
In 1850 Catherine and Malachi Bonham are ennumerated in the household of her father, Samuel Young, in Wilcox County. However in the index Catherine's name is spelled Catharine, Malachi is Malice and the census taker mistakenly recorded the surname of Catherine's younger sister, Martha, as Bonham.

In 1860 I found the family in Mobile County as James Bonham, Cath Y, Mack, Wm and Florence.

In 1870 Mobile County is J B Bonham, C D, Fannie, James and Pinkey. I have not found Catherine or any of her children.

In 1880 Mobile County is James B Bonhane, Camilla D, Daisy, Eugene, Jessie Lou and Armstead. In Wilcox County Kate Banham and Florence are living next to Malachi and Sallie. Willie Banham is ennumerated with the family of Robt. Hines (Robert Hall Hines, husband of Catherine's sister, Martha Ann Young).

In 1900 Mobile County is Daisy B. Knox and Joel B., Camilla D. Bonham and Jessie Paul. In Jefferson County, Birmingham, is Adrian C. Jackson, Florence B., Adrian C., Rufus, Bonham Y., Catherine Bonham and Clarence W. Bonham.

In 1910 Orleans County, LA is George Reinshagen and Jessie, Cammila Bonham, Armstead, James and Hazel. In Buncombe County, Ashville, NC is Adrian C. Jackson, Florence B., Bonham, and Catherine Bonham.

In 1920 Orleans County, LA is George Reinshagen and Jessie, William Paull and Camella Bonham.

I apologize on two counts. I'm doing something wrong with regards to emailing you. My response bounced back.

Next my abbreviations in the 1910 census were confusing. I used "MotherL" to denote mother-in-law, "BrotherL" for brother-in-law, etc. So Camilla is George Reinhagen's mother-in-law and Camilla's daughter, Jessie Lou, is George's wife. Apparently Jessie had been married once before to a FNU Paull.

I wish I knew the answer to the James Bonham from Ireland's occupation. To date I have no further information, but I keep looking.

I appreciate the information. It helped fill in some of the gaps I had. The thing that prompted my James Bonham research was that Kate Young Bonham’s marital status in the 1880 census was “D”. In subsequent censuses, it was “W” and in city directories she was listed as James Bonham’s widow. I began digging into various records to see what I could learn about him and found what appeared to be a second family. At the same time, I couldn’t rule out that this could be a cousin or someone unrelated. I haven’t found a cousin that fits, so I thought I’d post the information and see if anyone could help sort it all out.

As for the Mary Bonham, widow of James B, in the 1892 directory, I did find in the 1860 census for Mobile, AL: James Bonham 30 Laborer Ire; Mary 25 Ire; Kate 4 Ala, James 1 Ala. I found nothing further on this family after 1860 however.

The following summarizes the James Bonham records I found.
City Directories:
1866 Farrow and Dennett City of Mobile Directory:
Bonham, James Pilot steamer Annie Wagley

1870 Farrow and Dennett City of Mobile Directory
Bonham, James Pilot Mary Swan; Boards Girad House

1880 Henry Farrow and Co.'s Mobile City Directory
Bonham, James B Pilot steamer Maggie F Burke; Res: 60 St. Emanuel

1881 Henry Farrow and Co.'s Mobile City Directory
Bonham, James B Pilot steamboat Maggie F Burke; Res: West St. Emanuel 3 South Monroe

1882 George Matzenger's Mobile City Directory, Page 21
Bonham, James B Pilot steamer Maggie F Burke; Res: 84 Government

1883 George Matzenger's Mobile City Directory, Page 22
Bonham, James B Pilot steamboat M.
James B. Bonham 1826-1893

I am researching the descendants of Catherine "Kate" Young (1825-1917) who was married to James B. Bonham in 1844. Some of my sources include census records and city directories. In 1850 I found Catherine and son Malachi living with her parents in Wilcox County, AL., but no record of James. In 1860 the family is living in Mobile, AL. In 1866 the state of Alabama did a census and it appears to me Catherine is back in Wilcox Co. with her two youngest children. In the 1870 census for Mobile there is a J.B. Bonham, 43 years old, born in SC and is a steamboat pilot. However the family consists of C.D. [Camilla D. Peacock] with children Fannie, James and Pinkey. I find no record of Kate and her children. In 1880 the same James B. Bonham is in Mobile with wife Camilla, and children Daisy, [James] Eugene, Jessie Lou and Arm[i]stead, while Kate and her children are in Wilcox Co.

As for Mobile City directories I have found:
1892 Page 27
Bonham, Eugene B Stbt pilot, res 207 St. Louis
Mary Wid. Edward N., res 107 Dearborn

Am I correct in assuming that this James B. Bonham was husband to both Catherine and Camilla? I have not seen any research on this second family and would appreciate any help in sorting out these individuals.

Your research is interesting. I was not aware that James Butler Bonham, the son of Malachi Mark and Martha Ford Bonham, had a second family. My records indicate that James B.
I do not have a Rebecca in my notes, I would love to have more information on her and your line.

My dad knows most of this information off the top of his head, and I have only the bits he has put into the computer and shared with me, and then have found on my own. I will talk to him and see what more I can get for you. He has a whole lot more information in hard copy formats than what is in the computer database.

How would you like to begin to compare notes? I do have information back to Nicholas, but only speculation of his father.

Throw out all the people that cannot be proven by primary records. There were not nineteen children born to Hezekiah's second wife. Some of those listed children belong to others. What source do you have for Ann Hunt? She cannot be proven, and Mary Bishop, daughter of Marie Alger, is far more prominently recorded than an Ann Hunt.

It's easier to talk back and forth that way.

Rebecca was not in my Uncle's research (which I inherited) either. He said my ggggrandmother was Sarah, but I proved she wasn't Sarah and accidentally stumbled on Rebecca. She and Samuel Cox Bonham were the youngest children of Absalom and Rebecca. I have copies of letters from members of this family written to my gg grandfather in Texas. I will send you a pedigree as soon as you e-mail me privately. I think we have someone else in our DNA group who is from Marcy.

Love, Brownie

Both of you can most likely discover more if you'll go to Genforum.com and to the Bonham forum. Or....you can just google these people. Check out the Bonham DNA site on FamilyTreeDNA.com...the public site. Or try Bonham-L-request@rootsweb.com and type in subscribe. Then you'll be on the Bonham@rootsweb.com mailing list.
Thank you. Where would I find these "primary" records? I do have Mary Bishop listed as Hezekiah's second wife, but I keep finding other post with Ann Hunt listed, it is so confusing. I only have 14 children listed for Hezekiah and Mary (nee Bishop) and four to him and his first wife (I think) Mary Dunn. I keep finding people saying that the Hannah Bonham that married Benjamin Stout is not their daughter, but Hezekiah JR's daughter. If you look at the dates of birth, that can't be possible. Do you know of some resources for me to look at? Thanks for your advice.

If you google The Proceedings of the New Jersey Historical Society, you will find refs. to births and marriages and (deaths)in Piscataway. I have death in parentheses as I have never seen the ref. that is often referred to regarding Mary Dunn Bonham´s date of death. Hannah Bonham is listed as a child of Hezekiah Bonham and Mary Dunn Bonham, b. 1694/5 and a footnote in the records as to the children´s births (these are transcripts and not original records as they were lost) notes that Mary Dunn Bonham´s death record was incorrectly reported as (can´t recall the date offhand, but before Hannah´s birth) and that the death date of Mary Dunn Bonham could not be correct because she was mentioned in the will of her father, Hugh Dunn, as wife of Hezekiah and still alive. As said, these records can be found by googling around. But also, as said, have never found proof of when Mary Dunn Bonham DID die and that is a really interesting question. One thing that IS certain is that the Hannah Bonham who md. Benjamin Stout was NOT Hezekiah, Jr´s daughter. Any child of Hezekiah, Jr. would have been b. too late to fit that scenario.

No need to apologize. You are doing good work! Do have one suggestion though and that´s when you have found these Bonhams in a census that you say whether the trancription was Bonham or another. Have had difficulties finding the census data you are mentioning. I did finally find James Bonham and Cath and children in 1860 census (and interstingly, in this census, James´occupation was Pilot)but name was transcribed as Benham (I submitted a correction to Ancestry). Charles´s listing all of the children´s names and dates of birth, helped. I have not been able to find the family in 1870, not looking for first names, years of birth or any which way.

Linda

Interesting puzzle to figure out! I think there were likely 2 different James B. Bonhams in the area but we need to compare census data. Our Bonham group, Brownie Mackie, Catherine Cooper and I have collected a lot of data on all of the early Bonhams and I may have some info in my files. If not, will do some searching. Will get back to you with what I find.

Linda

Hi,. I'm trying to reach Diann. Your Grandmother, Cora is likely my Great Aunt Cora as my Grandmother was Francis Gibson, married to Floyd Cecil Gibson (my dad is Cecil Andrew Gibson) after his grandfather Andrew Bonham. My dad was born in Dayton WA. I'm trying to find out whatever I can about his side of our family, through his mother (Cora's sister).
Thanks much
Cindy
