Emily (nee Bonifay) Gale b 1825 FL d 1905 Mobile AL

MOBILE REGISTER - 13 FEBRUARY 1905

MRS EMILY BONIFAY GALE

Those who pass from the busy walks about us to the better rest beyond should be spoken of only in the echoes of their own lives. At yesterday's predawn, just a woman took up the burthen of her long life-work, and moved softly away to lay it at the Throne's foot.
Of her, only the tenderest and simplest of words should be whispered; for all her life brimmed full with simplicity and gentleness. All about her were kinfolks and strangers equally, who might touch of the soft firm hand.
Mrs. Emily Bonifay Gale, widow of Edward B Gale, died at the home of her step-granddaughter, Mrs Joseph L Herman, surrounded by the members of her family. She passed away as softly and painlessly as a child to sleep, consciousness remaining until almost the final moment, and her last breath bearing sweet farewells and messages of love to the waiting ones. This was not a death; only the awakening to a new life, that shall know neither age, sorrow nor parting, evermore.
"Aunt Emily" as all knew and loved her best, ever called this good woman, was Mr Gale's second wife. His first was her sister, Miss Faustina Bonifay, who died just fifty years ago, leaving four children. These were Edward B Jr, Mrs Max Demouy, Mrs Charles Le Bacon Collins, and Thomas B Gale, then an infant of fifteen months. Her sister, Miss Emily Bonifay, took the motherless quartette in her fostering charge, rearing them as her own and never letting them know the loss of motherhood.
In the early sixties Emily Bonifay became the wife of Mr Gale, and since has been a fair example of charity, selflessness, and constancy in good works, familiar to all, old and young, in this city.
The sick - especailly the sick poor - were her never failing care. But no form of want, of suffering, or sorrow missed her watchful eye. Far and wide, about her home of over half a century, "Aunt Emily" was known and loved.

Not my family, just sharing from the newspaper archives of the Mobile Public Library.

Hi...Have you tried contacting St. Louis Church in New Orleans or the Mormon genealogy website? They hold quite a few family records.
I've discovered that the spelling of Marianna's maiden name is most likely incorrect as I was told that the name Pingrow or Pengrow is simply is not French! Marianna's husband Joseph was born in Nantes, France as she was according to the Mormon records.

Robin Bonifay Mueller
Bonifay Surname

I'm looking for any reference to Emily Bonifay, married a Robert Allen, possibly in North Carolina, but that's just a hunch. They moved to Greenville, Butler Co., AL by 1853.

They had a son named James Joseph Allen who moved his family to St. John's Co., FL

ANY clues are welcome, including the history of the Bonifay surname and migration patterns in the US.

Thanks,
Tracey Miller Karcher
Vilas, Watauga Co., NC

Family of C.C. (Lewis) Bonifay of Gainesville, Florida

Looking for the family members of William and Ada Lewis of Gainesville, Florida. They had four (?) children: Agnes Lewis, Albert Lewis (who served in WWII at Pearl Harbor and then in Jacksonville, Florida), Dorothy Lewis Chamberlain, C.C. Bonifay (?), and Milton Lewis (who served in WWII and was KIA/first serviceman to die in action from Alachua County, Gainesville, Florida). If you are a family member or know of any family members or friends of the Lewis family, please contact me at flang@gru.net. I am interested in compiling family history and accounts for a book dedicated to the memory of the Lewis family and Cpl.Milton Lewis, USMC in particular. I appreciate all of the help and will be glad to share in the credits and any profits from the informations. Thank you so very much. DiAnna Lang
