We are still working on our family book, we expect to have something printed by the end of the year. The book is in Spanish and covers the history and the genealogy of the names Bonilla, Melendez and Galvis in Colombia. It includes not only the genealogy trees but also a short biography of some persons, pictures and history of the towns where the family lived. There are about 2,000 persons in the tree and it goes back to Spain. This is family book and we do not have plans to sell it.
Regards
Jorge

My branch Bonilla is from Andulucia. It's true I have also from Ramirez... Do you think they were marranos, sephardic I mean ?
Very commun as this period. They are listed in some sephardic links. We still have some Bonilla family in Laujar de Andarax, Andalucia, some emigrated in Us, some in Algeria during the French mandat. I'm a descendant...
Please tell me more about the book, I'm very interesting...
Maybe we are cousins !!!

Best regards,
Sara-Caterine

Re: Fiding Bonilla relatives from Colombia

we found from our research that the first Bonilla in Nueva Granada was Juan Leandro Bonilla. I am attching here the initial paragraphs of the chapter on the origin of the bonillas in Colombia. This will be part of a book that we expect to print by the end of the year. It is in spanish, but you may be able to understand it.
Gregorio Bonilla Delgado y Velasco was Juan Leandro descendent who stayed in Popayan and is the head of the Bonillas in Cauca and El Valle, from which your grand father may descend, nevertheless, I followed this banch
only to about 1800, too early to find your ancestors in 1900.

This is the text, I hope you find it of interest:

Antonia, a Tierra Firme”.
Los hijos de Juan Leandro y Mariana fueron;

I too am looking. The things I do know is that in Guanajauto my father Maurico (Mauro) was born to Roman Bonilla and Maria Munoz. Roman's parents were Nicanor Bonilla and Maria Gutirrez (sp)from La Capilla, I guess in the same state. Nicanor was a justice of the peace and I know they had children, but I don't know who they were. My father was born in 1899. So Roman's brothers and sisters may have moved on as they lived in Queramano, a small village. I have been to Leon, and am researching. alvinastar@aol.com

Rhank you, What is your grandfathers name on your mother's side. Do you know what her grandfather's name was? The thing is that I have gotten as far as Nicanor Bonilla, my great grand father his wife Petronilla Guiterrez. She came from La Capilla, Paso Honco, La Urcica and Cueramaro, GTo are all cities I have found that the Bonilla's were around. Since my father is dead I cannot ask him if he had Bonilla brothers or sisters or uncles or aunts. So I am at a stand still. Thank you again, if you find information, Please let me know.

I have been away and today I found your interesting question. My Uncle, Martin Bonilla, son of Roman Bonilla, was born in Guanajuto He went to Ventura California in the early 1920s. He was a forman at a ranch, I have to dig for it if you want. He died in 1925, killed by a train. He left five children, Mercedes Bonilla Martinez, born in the early 20s.The others were also born in the 20s. There was Cora Posos. (Pozos?) Consuelo Bonilla Quintana, Angelina Bonilla Vasquez, Martin Bonilla (never married) Ester Bonilla Becker. Three are dead, Counsuelo and Ester and Cora. All had Boys except for Martinez who had three girls and three boys. One of the boys was named Benny Martinez and moved up north. He would have been very closed mouth.

Thank you very much for your response, and yes, I would appreciate it if you could send me the file that you have on Galvis.
I have a suggestion, have you thought that it may not be in the records of passengers from Spain because they didn't come from Spain but from another place in Europe and they changed the name because people there could not pronounce or write the name correctly? :) I ask this because I know for a fact that I have Irish in that side of my family, and I have been trying to figure out if it was that last name or another one. I'm trying to go as back as I can, the next thing I would probably have to do is go to Colombia y try to find it on my own.
Thank you,
Delia A. Colorado de Daza

Jose is my wife's grandfather. He died before she was born and her father is very tight lipped about him...they were not close. We know nothing of his family and I do not recognize any of the names you mention. Do you know if he is related to your family? Does the story of his marriage and work after the 1923 period match up with anything you may know? I am not 100% certain the Jose Refugio Bonilla I found in Ventura County in 1918 is the same Joseph Refugio Bonilla as my wife's grandfather I found in Twin Falls Idaho in 1920 working at a lumber mill. Any help would be most appreciated.

Re: What is the origin of the Bonilla name?

From what I know, Bonilla's came from around salamanca Spain. In the meantime the soilders who were Bonill's were part of the army that went to England in the 1500's with Catherine of Arragon. They were her army.
Re: Bonilla Genealogy in Colombia

Yes we did extensive research on the name Galvis. Our conclusion is that the name Galvis originated in Colombia, more specifically in the area or Curití, Santander. In the census of 1690 in this area appears for the first time the name Galvis, as part of a group of 46 Europeans that settle in the area. The name probably was a variation of Galvez that the new residents decided to change, or simply that the person doing then census changed.
We could not find any Galvis in the passenger lists between Spain and America in the 17 century, but we did find a lot of Galvez.
We had a web site that we just closed because we are making changes and printing a family book. If you are interested to know more on Galvis I can send you the file corresponding to the history of the Galvis in Colombia.
Regards
bonillaja

What you say is possible but I think it is unlikely. Galvis is not a Portuguese or Italian name, but Galvez, Galbis (with B) y galabis are Spanish names and most likely Galvis evolved from one of these Spanish names.
If you send me your e-mail I will send you the Galvis file, my e-mail is jab.genealogy@gmail.com
