Keziah Bonnell

I am looking for evidence that shows Keziah Bonnell (abt 1710 - 1759) from Elizabethtown, NJ is the daughter of Joseph Bonnell and Martha Frazee. I know many people have her as their child in their family tree, but I cannot make the connection. I can place her in the same cemetary in Union, NJ but that could be a coincidence...Thanks.

Hey, Joann --

your husband and I are 4th cousins once removed, I think. WFB Sr. is my 3d G-GF.

I didn't know old Isaac had a middle name. What I've been looking for is his parentage and line.

I don't know about the medals; sorry.

Best,

Warren
Charlie,

I have obtained the uncertified death certificate for John Bonnell from Fond du Lac WI. And my sister has obtained a copy of a letter from former relative of John Bonnell that confirms William S. Bonnell was his father. This is even more insightful than lining up the census. Especially since there are so many John Bonnell's.

Hi Warren,

I will make the corrections to the townsnames. They are both typos as I know I have it correct in the files elsewere.

We have actually connected some time back...

My husband is the 4th GGrandson of Wm F. Bonnell, Sr. He is the 3rd GGrandson of Isaac Henry Bonnell (brother of Wm. F Jr. and an uncle to Anning Digby.)

I have a little data on Isaac Henry (1738-1806) Perth Amboy/Digby - husband of Grace Fox. It is probably the same stuff you have but if you want to compare notes, let me know. What specifically are you looking for on "Old Isaac?"

Also, do you know who in the family might have inherited Bartlett Brooke's medals from France? I would like to send them a copy of his war record if they are interested.

Thanks,
Joann

This is my Loyalist Bonnell line.

Anning Digby is son of Wm. Franklin Bonnell Jr., GS of WFB Sr., and G-GS of Isaac Bonnell of New Jersey and Digby, N.S. Isaac is my GGG-GF and a brick wall; I've never found his parents. He was a friend of William Franklin,

I descend through WFB Sr.'s daughter Mary Ann Sophia, who became the second wife of Timothy Robert Wetmore. She was Anning's aunt.

BTW, the St. John references are to St. John, New Brunswick, not Newfoundland. And Gagetown is in New Brunswick. http://tinyurl.com/opm97o

Best,

Warren Wetmore
Hampton, VA
This is fantastic. It has a lot of info that I am looking for. I need to go through it but it will fill in a lot of gaps.

I knew that various people use the spelling "Bunnell" but I have not run across any in out direct lines. I need to look and see where that split happened and this site is a great resource. (I am familiar with the problem as my husband also has Coburn/Colburn/Colburne lines that are all over the place).

I did not know about his first wife or the child they had, so I will definitely hunt that down...I knew about his sister Gertrude's marriages and knew there were kids. I was hoping his medals survived - he won the Croix de Guerre (with a Palme) and the Medaille Militaire for his service to France in WWI. Whomever in the family has those medals, they might like a copy of his service record to go with it.

Sincere thanks...I will have fun exploring this lead!

Kindest regards,
Joann

Bartlett Brook Bonnell

Hi.

I am trying to find information on a particular ancestor in my husband's family tree - Bartlett Brooke Bonnell(b. 1887 in Brooklyn, NY.)
He was the son of Anning Digby Bonnell (1842- aft. 1920)and Agatha Gertrude Dakin (1865-1903) His parents were both originally from Canada.

Bartlett (or Brook as he was often called) had a sister Gertrude (Young)(Chase)and a half sister, Muriel Isobel Wade (Randall).

Brook fought in the French Foreign Legion in WWI, losing a leg due to wounds suffered. He also won a number of prestigious medals. He was an accountant and he married Isobel L ?, sometime between 1920-1934.
By 1942, Brook and Isobel were living in Red Bank, Monmouth NJ. She died in Nov. 1979 in that same place but I have yet to find his record of death. I am assuming 1950-1965-ish

I have his French Military records but they don't have a lot of additional info that I didn't uncover before - just a better sense of the timeline of events.

Anyone have these folks in their tree? I'd love to hear from you and share info.

Thanks
Joann

So if our chain us up through Edith Bonnell (my fraternal grandmother) on up, should i assume we are cousins? Here is our path:
http://www.westfieldnjhistory.com/reclark/fam00203.htm

1) So start with Allison Bonnell, whom we already know as my g-g-grandfather

He was Mayor of Portland

2) He married Catherine, the daughter of Allison Looker, the son of Othniel Looker, a big-wig Patriot and Governor of Ohio, and Pamela Clark (see next)

3) His father was Aaron Bonnell, and Aaron's wife was Rachel Clark (whose sister Pamela married the above-mentioned Othniel Looker)

4) Rachel and Pamela's father was Henry Clark, and his father was also Henry (died 1771), and his father was Richard Clarke (died 1742), and his father was also Richard (died 1697)

5) This Richard, apart from our ancestor Richard, had a son Thomas (died 1711). He had a son Thomas (died 1765)

6) His son was the Abraham Clark, who signed the Declartion of Independence.

Making him the 2nd cousin of our ancestor Henry (died 1771).
{With Ref to msg "John Bonnell / Bunnell 1757-1845" at
http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.bonnell/236/mb.ashx
the Revolutionary War Soldier *RWS }

John_RWS is said to have 4 Sons and 3 Daughters:
(1) Thomas Bonnell 1776-1871;
(2) John Bonnell, Jr 1780-1874;
(3) Margaret Bonnell b.1782;
(4) Nancy Bonnell b.1783
(5) George Bonnell 1786-1870;
(6) William S Bonnell 1788-1878;
(7) Sarah Bonnell b.1790;

BTW, of these 7 children, 4 (#'s 1, 3, 4, 7) married Coovers!

Recently, a DNA Test has Corroborated with some of this over-200-year-old paper trail.

I'm from John's son (#5) George and I had a DNA Test (12-Marker) in 2006. I did NOT match with ANYBODY in the Bonnell/Bunnell line at the time! And, once I saw and understood better of what DNA could & could NOT do, I upgraded to a 67-Marker Test.

Fortunately (for both my scientific & emotional well being ;-),
a person who was in son (#6) William's line had a test and proved to be a 100% match!

Although this latest test was only 12-Markers (to my 67-Markers), it agrees with the theory that we are related.
Hopefully, this latest member will increase to a 67-Marker test to tie this closer.

As more DNA tests with Males in John_RWS’s line are submitted,
we should be able to clarify these murky branches of the tree.
PLEASE, if you are a MALE in this line, consider a DNA Test,
and FEMALES, please 'coerce' the Males if they need a nudge to do this!

The Bonnell-Bunnell-(etc) DNA Surname Project is at
http://www.ftdna.com/public/BNL_dna

Thank You
William S. is the father of the John you asked about in the previous posting. They go back to one of the unattached branches starting with William Bunnell and Nancy Parrody (or John Bonnell & Nancy Farraday). Several subscribers to the Bunnell/Bonnell Newsletter are descendents of this same line.

If you are a male bunnell/Bonnell descendent of this line you may be interested in the DNA program currently going on. We are trying to define the DNA pattern for the various Bunnell/Bonnell lines. We currently have two descendents of this line who have submitted their DNA for cataloging and the possibility of a third. For more info go to www.ftdna.com/public/BNL_dna/.

Charlie Bunnell

Did your mother have any brothers who were supposed to be sons of Orie and your grandmother? If so, did they/he have any sons who are currently alive? There is a Bonnell/Bunnell DNA project on-going that has the probable dna pattern for Orie's 4grt grandfather. If you could have him/them participate in the DNA project, that could settle some issues at least for them. Unfortunately, it won't prove/disprove your line. The site to go to for the DNA project is http://www.familytreedna.com/public/BNL_dna/default.aspx. By joining this family group, you (he/they) will get reduced prices, though I must admit they aren't dirt cheap. I would recommend at least the y-dna 37 test, though the 67 marker test is even more accurate.

Charlie Bunnell

Charlie,

I am happy to report that my quandary over the true identity of Barnett Bunnell’s wife has been resolved. My initial search not leading to a solution, I dropped the matter for several months and only recently decided to take another look.

As I suspected, Charity, dau. of Simeon and Mary (Slaght) DICKERSON was not Barnett's wife. His wife was Charity DICKISSON, alias DICKINSON, dau. of Pvt. Isaac and Margaret (Parker) DICKISSON, born abt.1799 in New Jersey, died sometime after the U.S. Census of 1850 and before that of 1860. Definitive proof of her identity was found in the Revolutionary War Pension Records of Isaac Dickisson in a document by James E. Eldred, Clerk of the Orphans Court of Pike County, PA in which he certifies that '…Charity Dickinson formerly wife of Barnett Bunnell…' [www.footnote.com/image/19230843].

It pays to be patient and to not give up!

Carol
Charlie,

The William Bunnell Family Research has been very interesting. I have reviewed the US Census records and I was looking to make a deeper connection since there are so many John Bonnell's. And this John Bonnell came to WI in 1840, where is suggested father William S. Bonnell and brother came in 1856. Maybe from your experience you can help me validate the census or other.

Sherre

It would be useful to know where these Bonnells were born and where they lived as adults. Just a suggestion.

Forgive me if you know all this, but here goes:

For DNA testing, you need Y chromosomes, which are passed down unchanged from father to son to grandson. I.e., you would have to be a direct MALE-LINE descendant -- and a male yourself, of course; females don't have Y chromosomes.

Now, I'm a direct descendant of Loyalist Isaac Bonnell of New Jersey and then Nova Scotia -- but via his granddaughter Maryanne Sophia Bonnell Wetmore, my great-great grandmother. I'm a direct male-line descendant of her husband Timothy Robert Wetmore of Gagetown, New Brunswick. (I'm still searching for Isaac's antecedents -- my primary"brick wall.")

I participated in the Wetmore DNA project and verified that I am indeed a Wetmore. I have one marker that's different from those of other participants, but that's a normal mutation.

Best regards,

Warren

I am looking for more information about my husband's paternal grandmother and her family. Her name was Ethel P BONNELL(1899-1997) and she married Hugh B NELSON. They had 12 children.
Ethel's parents were Melissa J E LYNCH(1868-?) and William BONNELL (1864-?). She was born in Green Lake County, Wisconsin. Her siblings were Loretta BONNELL, Florence BONNELL, and Earl BONNELL. Loretta and Florence both eventually moved to Indiana. I have some information on them, but not much.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!
Michelle Smoody Nelson
tazcoco72@gmail.com

Orie (Ora) Bonnell b.1883 - Possible Family Link

looking for information on Orie Stephen Bonnell born 8 May 1883 in West Virginia. He was married to Florence B(elle) Stackpole born 1 May 1880 in McClellan, Doddridge County, West Virginia. They had 6 children - Berlin Bonnell, b. abt. 1904; Densil/Denzel (Dennis) Bonnell, b. abt 1907; Flora Bonnell, b. abt 1908; Stanley Bonnell, b. 17 May 1910, d. 8 Apr 1996 in Elkins, Randolph County, West Virginia; Alcin Bonnell, b. abt 1913; and Leona V. Bonnell-Stultz, b. 15 Nov 1917 in Beverly, Randolph County, West Virginia, d. 3 Nov 1997 in Falling Waters, Berkeley County, West Virginia. If my information so far is correct then Orie Bonnell is the son of Lehi Bonnell, b. 31 Aug 1860 in Doddridge County, West Virginia and Mahala E. Pitts, b. 28 Oct 1864 in Doddridge County, West Virginia, d. 14 Oct 1929 in Elkins, Randolph County, West Virginia. They were married 7 Jan 1880 in Doddridge County, West Virginia. The Information I would like to know is the date of place of death for Orie and if he is indeed the son of Lehi and Mahala Bonnell. WAIT THERE IS MORE:

I need to have anyone clarify the link between the VanDevender faimly and Orie dating back to between 1918 through the 1950's if he was still alive during that time which I believe he was. Here is the story as I have picked it apart and why I am seeking:

My mother "Pauline VanDevender-LeCompte-Stone, b. 23 Jul 1934 in Elkins, Randolph County, West Virginia, d. 18 Nov 1996 in Aransas Pass, San Patricio County, Texas always related to us as we were growing up that her real father was Orie Bonnell. She even had an oil painting of him made in either the late 50's or early 60's that was placed in my Grandmothers house and when she passed on my mother kept it but never displayed it rather keeping it under cover in storage. My older brother claimed it when my mother passed on but having little respect of it's value lost it over the years. My mother even named one of my brothers born in 1966 after the Bonnell family "Timothy Bonnell LeCompte". The story goes that my Grandmother and Orie carried on an affair that sired at least 4 children including my mother athough each remained married to their respective spouses. Some of the evidence that I have that they at least knew each other is:

WWI Draft Registration Card on Orie which was signed by my Great Grandfather Sylvanus VanDevender on 12 Sept 1918 as the person who signed up Orie. They are both listed on the same 1920 Census for the Beverly Magisterial District, Randolph County, West Virginia, dated 15 and 16 January 1920 with Orie on page 13 and Sylvanus VanDevender on page 14 which made them very close neighbors. Sylvanus had a son Howard born on 1904 (13 years old) which would become my Grandfather.

The 1930 Census for the Beverly Magisterial District, Randolph County, West Virginia, dated 8 April 1930 page 3 shows my Grandmother aged 23, married for 2 years living with her parents Norval and Nancy Watson.

WWII Draft Registration Card where Orie Bonnell listed that the Name and Address of Person That Will Always Know Your Address as Mr. Ethel VanDevender of Elkins, West Virginia, my Grandmother.

If anyone has a story or actual events to relate I would be very happy to hear them.
