Re: where did all of us borges' come from?

This whole Borges genealogy has been one of the hardest names for me to trace. In fact, my whole Portuguese lineage has been tough, because all I have is what I have been able to find here in CA. As it is, my Borges name stems from my dad's step-father. Technically, I am supposed to be a Linhares but my dad was adopted by his step-father at a young age and took his name for his own.

Family legend has it that my step-father's father came through Hawaii from San Miguel, Azores Is. and jumped ship to get to CA and took the Borges surname from one of his sponsors or a man who he worked for on a farm here in central CA. It seems to be a common Portuguese name here in CA. Every so often, someone will ask me if I am related to this Borges or that Borges and I will have to go through the whole explanation process. Usually I just say that it is a common name and that we are probably related to each other somewhere along the way.

My step-father usually kept to himself. Once upon a time he went to some of the festas that are so common here in Central CA, but got fed up with his fellow Portuguese countrymen when they would call him a "boca vermelha" or "red mouth" Usually a term reserved to call foreigners or non-Portuguese speaking people that would attend the parties. He finally had enough of that and cussed them out in full blown Portuguese, and their jaws dropped as they didn't think that he could understand them. I guess they thought of him as a foreigner as he had red hair and blue eyes, but yet he came from San Miguel, Azores Is.

It could be possible that through time the Germans could have emigrated to Spain and later Portugal. I've always been told that the name was or Portuguese origin, though.

My great grand father immigrated from Portugal with his then pregnant wife, Julia. Julia's birthdate was, we think, 3 May 1893. Borges left promptly upon arrival in MA and Julia later remarried to Jose Ramos (25 March 1889, also born in Portugal). Her child, George Borges (27 February 1924) was born in the US and grew up thinking he was George Ramos. He found out his last name was Borges when he tried to sign up for the military with the name Ramos.

In any case, this part of my family tree ends with Julia Jesus Ramos. No one in my family knows her maiden name or her Borges' first name. Does anyone have any info about these people??

I've just came from a two weeks vacations trip to Gran Canarias and Tenerife. I had no plan, whatsoever, to find my roots. My family always told me that the Borges family (my grandmother's surname) came from Tenerife, from three brothers that sailed to America on the 19th. century. I failed to find any relative, although, I was informed there were indeed Borges' people at Tenerife. My itinerary was tight, so I did not go any further to find out my "roots" at the university archives at La Laguna, where they told me to go. I am from the Borges family from San Lorenzo, Puerto Rico, but I really do not care where these guys came from, as long as I know who I am and who my kids are. This "apellidos" issues is not more than curiosity. As a last note, I should stress that the hell of the "barrancos" I found at Tenerife could be one important the reason for our ancestor to sail out. :-) Fernando

this story makes sense. My grandfather was from Cuba and his name was Antonio. He must be around 75-80 years old. He lives in Merida, Yucatan, Mexico now and i believe he moved there around 1950, and most of his family moved to Los Angeles, California. Alot of the family don't know much before 1950. I am in the military and i just randomly called a Borges from the phone book and he was from Puerto Rico and he said he didn't know much about the family before 1950. So if that is the time around when the 3 brothers were around, i am very curious to hear back from you. jorge.duran@us.army.mil or military_vato@yahoo.com

I'm in total agreement with you.

Portugese people have been migrating for years. At times I feel Portuguese don't get much credit by people that don't know history. Azores and Madeira were colonized by Portugal (ContineNtal). Immigrants from these 2 islands have settled in other parts of the world (U.S., HI, South Africa, Brazil, Caribbean, etc). The Canary Islands received alot portuguese colonists (though the islands belonged to the Spanish crown). This is evident with the language (Portuguese words with Spanish) and Portuguese surnames that were left on the islands (e.g. Borges, Machado, Rabelo, Corujo, Vieira, etc and then other last names were castilianized, e.g. Rodrigues to Rodriguez). Immigrants from the Canary Islands settled in many places in the New World. More people need to recognize Portugal.

I highly doubt that the Borges families mentioned from Puerto Rico have that relation. The original Borges settlers from San Lorenzo have no records in Tenerife. The San Lorenzo branch were more than likely from the Eastern Canary Islands (Lanzarote or Fuerteventura). These Borges' are related to the Madeirans or Azoreans. There was an Antonio Borges Docabo found in Fuerteventura in the 1600s. He was a Madeiran merchant at the time. There was also Pedro Borges and Jeronimo Borges that were residing in the Eastern Canary Islands during the 1600s.

I'd be interested to know more about this family connection.
My e-mail is bborgesb@yahoo.com

In response to the original post, where did all the borges' come from?

Most Borges' come from mainland Portugal. From there, some immigrated to the Azores (some of these families then went to Brazil and the U.S., (Mass, RI, CA. HI). There was a Borges family from Portugal that immigrated to the Canary Islands in the 16th Century. (The Canary Islands were a spanish possession but the governor at the time allowed portuguese immigration. Also in the Canaries, the town of Icod de los Vinos was made up of 80% portuguese). This family was Gonzalo Yanes and Teresa Borges (1st couple) and Pedro Yanes and Maria Borges (2nd couple). Alot of their children used the surname Borges (The portuguese tradition then was to use the maternal last name.) From the Canary Islands, some of these families left for Venezuela, Cuba, Puerto Rico, etc.
Now the poet Jorge Luis Borges from Argentina claims his Borges side to be directly from Portugal although he lived in a Spanish country in South America.

Keep in mind there is a Borges family from Catalon, Spain. This group did not have a great influence outside of Spain. This is a distinct family and have no relation to the Borges families from Portugal.

I have not studied the Borges family from Germany, but it could be variation of the burgess surnme.

My husbands family is borges from Puerto Rico. The story goes as this: there were three borges brothers, that came from Tenerife, Canary Island. Two of them went to Cuba and the other one came to Puerto Rico. The one that remained in Puerto Rico, established himself at Quebradilla, Puerto Rico. After a while, the rest of the family went to San Lorenzo, Puerto Rico and the other ones went to Santa Catalina, Coamo, Puerto Rico. From the ones that stayed in Coamo is my husband.
