BORKOWSKI Surname DNA Project

Hello everyone,

My name is Tina Ellis. My 2nd great grandmother was a Borkowski from the village of Jalowo in the Suwalki, Poland area of NE Poland.

Recently I had a DNA test done with Family Tree DNA on my 2nd great grandmother's brother's descendant. This was done on a male cousin, who lives in Poland, to determine the origin of this paternal line so we can connect with genetic cousins. It is a Y-DNA test, which is available for males only. It means finding a male Borkowski in your Brokowski branch, who is living today.

FTDNA contact us as new test results are completed on those who join the project. Because their testing techniques, we can compare them to see which Borkowskis are closely related with other Borkowski males.

We have learned that my Borkowski DNA originated in the southern Russian Steppe region between the Caspian and Black Seas. We also learned that his DNA matched mostly with Germen and Polish people, whose DNA has also been tested. The third most number were of people tested from England.

As most of us know Polish people live in many nations. The testing tells us that these people have lived in these countries ane more.

The more Borkowski people researchers have tested in their family the closer we will get to learning more about where your branch began and where your recent ancestors have lived. It's also a good way of finding cousins who are also researchers.

If you are interested in adding your family to the Borkowski DNA project we write to me at mackiewicz.dna@gmail.com. I have three DNA projects in progress on three Polish surnames. Mackiewicz is one of them, and this is where I store my emails and other data on these research projects.

Hope to hear from you all soon.

Tina Ellis

Borkowski

I am tracing my Dad's family who are all deceased - My Dad, Milton was the youngest of 9 who lived in Baltimore City, Maryland when born. Two of the children moved to Biloxi Mississippi (Rose and Joseph - who used the name of Berry instead of Borkowski) and lived there throughout their lives. My question? there are three sisters that I can't locate their married names. Mary, who I believed married a Paul, Helen and Victoria - I believe Victoria owned a grocery store. Mother and father are Frank (Franciszek) and Rosalie Borkowski who immigrated from Russia/Poland around 1886+- - don't believe they were married then. Looking forward to some answers. I have hit a brick wall on this site.

Steve,

I sent you and your wife two emails this past Saturday, March 7, 2009. Today I received a letter from her saying you have not heard from me. I have sent her a letter today letting her know about the two letters sent Saturday. They had a lot of data in them. I do hope you all receive it.

Tina

I'm trying to locate from where in Prussia my ggrandfather Frederick Borkowski (?) immigrated. He arrived with his family in 1882 aboard the ship Vandalia. His wife was Elizabeth Wolf. His mother's name was Katarina Orck and his father was Ben. Borkosky(Borkowsky) or Borkowski. I'm unsure how his name was spelled as his application for naturalization had it spelled 3 different ways in the one document. It was spelled after his becoming a citizen as Borkosky.

Hi Tina, The Julian that is Aleksandra's father was not born in the US.

I got Lomza from Aleksandra's marriage license. It just says "Lumzo, Russ-Poland."

There is a ship manifest for an Aleksandra Borkowski that mentions a Julian and says the last residence was Godzin, Russia. I haven't found this location yet.

I sent for Aleksandra's social security application. Hopefully that will shed some more light. I will let you know when I can narrow it down more.

Michelle

I have three Julian's in my Borkowski lineage.

One was born in Jalowo, Suwalki, one in Pittsburgh, PA and one in Hamtramck, MI. All where descendants of Franciszek Borkowski of Jalowo. They are decescendant of two brothers born in the 1700 in the Suwalki area.

Was here family from the city, powiat (county) or woj. (province) of Lomza? The LDS has records for the city and various parishes microfilmed. You need to know if it was a village in the province or county to identify the parish. Have you found her ship manifest? Maybe if I see it, I can help you identify if it is a smaller place where she was living or born before coming to the states.

Tina

Tina, Have you found any more information about the Julian Borkowski you mentioned? I think (hope) that is my family. My great grandmother was Aleksandra Borkowski (b 1890 d 1976) and her father was supposedly Julian. I was told they were from Lomza, not Suwalki, though.
Michelle

The English Y is a J sound so no surname starting with Y but J in Poland.
If your grandmother was naturalized citizen than her petition will have her place of birth. If she had SS-5Form http://ssdi.rootsweb.com than that form too will have a place of birth and parents names.
Distribution of a surname in Poland;
http://www.moikrewni.pl/mapa/kompletny/kustwan.html
Few sites for research:
http://maxpages.com/poland
www.rootsweb.com/~polwgw/index.html
www.surnamenavigator.org
www.halgal.com
Your Lumzo most likely Lomza. Her marriage license says her parents were Julian Brokowska and Mary Yablietzka and that she was born in in Lumzo, Russ-Poland. I know she had at least one sister and some of the family was supposedly denied entrance to the US when trying to immigrate and ended up in Latin America somewhere. Thanks.

Looking for cousins from my Aunts Helen and Ann. I am daughter of their brother Stanley, Mary Ann

I accidently met my cousins when I was 16 in Wildwood Crest, NJ so I know you are out there. Why my Aunt Helen or Aunt Ann never tried to contact me and give me family from my Dad (Stanley) is unknown but I know you exist and I want to know all of you. My mother was Ruth Williams Felix and my dad worked for 24years at TWA in Phila. He lived his last years in Phila with a common law wife. My Aunt called me when I was 17 so she knew how to get in touch with me, told me my dad was dying and came and took me to see him. She never called me or contacted me in any way again.

Please e-mail me and make my family complete.

My grandmother, Scholastica (Scholastyke), was married to Stanislaw Borkowski. They came to the US separately around 1908-1910 and settled in Ecxelisor, PA, Northumberland county.

We were also told that my grandmother visited family in Detroit, MI for a wedding. I have a wedding picture possibly from that wedding.
