Hello Lynne,
Thanks for your message. I hope that you had a good 4th of July.

I have in my database that the Mary M. Stewart (26 Sep 1810 - 17 Jan 1875) that you mention was the wife of William Stewart, and that they were married on Feb. 22, 1831, in West Twp., Huntingdon Co. Mary was born there and died in Wilsontown, Huntingdon Co. She is buried at Manor Hill. I have her parents as James and Susannah (Borst) Porter. Susannah was the sister of your ancestor, Jacob Borst, and my ancestor, John Borst.
Here is my source for this connection:
http://files.usgwarchives.org/pa/huntingdon/bios/runk/porter...

Now, with that said, I may have the two Mary Stewarts mixed together, and perhaps the one buried at Manor Hill is the widow of Jacob Borst, and not the daughter of Susannah Porter. I see that at Cedar Grove Cemetery in Petersburg, Huntingdon Co. there is a William Stewart (1806-1862) buried there with wife Mary E. (1812-1885). Could she be the one who was the daughter of James and Susannah Porter??? This merits further investigation.

John Borst (1794-1849) married Mary Stewart (1804-1891), my great-great-great-great-grandparents. He is buried at Manor Hill and she is buried in Petersburg (the findagrave site posted here). Her parents were John and Margaret (Wilson) Stewart.

The Stewarts, Wilsons, Porters, and Borsts in this area (Barree/West/Logan Twps.) are all connected many times over. Andrew Stewart, Mary Borst's second husband, was first married to Elizabeth Borst, the sister of your Jacob.

If you can send me your e-mail address I can send you what I have on the Borst descendancy. Looking forward to hearing from you.

Hi Justin,

Nice to hear from a cousin. Huntingdon County Historical Society sent me a page out of a listing of Manor Hill Cemetery (I was unable to get to that cemetery on my visit as I made a connection with a distant cousin on the Moffitt side and we spent a great day hunting down the headstones on that side) Anyway on this page it lists George and Elizabeth Borst and 2 of their infant children, Mary M Stewart b Sept 26, 1810 and d Jan 17, 1875, then Jacob Borst. Later on the same page Elizabeth Steuart w/o of Andrew d 1844 and Andrew Steuart d 1847.

Since Mary M Stewart is listed among the Borsts with Jacob I decided that was probably my 3rdgreat grandmother and that Andrew Steuart was buried probably with his first wife. The dates seem to fit as Andrew could have married Mary between 1844 and 1847. As they had no children that short marriage also makes sense as I have not found Mary on any census records with Andrew. Does this make sense to you?

I would love to know more about that newspaper article. I have posted on my tree on ancestry.com the pages of the book with Susan Borst, Annamary Borst and William W Borst. I have posted what I have on the Borsts on my tree including the pages of William's civil war pension application for other family members to see/copy.

Also do you know the married name of Susan Borst?

Glad to hear from you.

Lynne

Hello everyone,
I am a descendant of Jacob Borst's brother John Borst (1794-1849). I have a lot of information about the family and used to live near Huntingdon Co. I've visited their graves there many times. Jacob's son William Wallace indeed went to Colorado. I've never been able to find a death date for Mary Borst Stewart, although I know she was still living in 1872 when she was mentioned in a newspaper article. Please contact me if interested, am happy to shae information. It is nice to see you posting there, Jim, I subscribed to your Borst newsletter when you were printing it and have all the back copies.

I have Catherine Elizabeth Borst's parents as Jacob & Mary Ann Borst. They are both buried at Manor Hill Cemetery near Petersburg.Jacob was considerably older than Mary Ann, and so after he died, she remarried to Andrew Stewart. MAry Ann had four children to Jacob Borst: Catharine Elizabeth (b. 1833); Susan (b. ca 1835);Anna Mary (b. ca. 1837); & William Wallace (b. ca. 1838/9). There were no children to the second husband. Catherine's father, Jacob Borst, was the eldest son of Johann Barnhardt & Anna Mary (Eminger) Borst. They are buried at the Manor HIll Cemetery as well.

Catherine Borst; Susan Borst; Mary Stewart; Annamary Borst; William W Borst in Huntingdon county, Pennsylvania

Looking for parents of Catherine (b 1833 in Pennsylvania) Borst who married Jackson Maffitt/Moffitt. They lived near Neffs Mills, Huntingdon county, Pennsylvania.

I have found Cath. E. Borst on the 1850 Census in Huntingdon County at age 17 living with Mary Stewart age 37 and Susan Borst age 16. I was not convinced that this was my great great grandmother until this weekend while visiting my mother and going through materials saved by my Moffitt grandparents. I found an antique book in which on one of the front pages was written the following names: Miss Anna Mary Borst, Miss Susan Borst, Mr. William W. Borst, Misses Mary Stewart. Now I am pretty sure that the 1850 census record is my family. I then looked at the 1860 census record and found Anna M Borst aged 23 and William W Borst aged 21 living with Mary Stewart. In the 1870 census record I found Anna M Borst aged 33 still living with Mary Stewart aged 57. William W Borst may have moved to Denver, Colorado after 1860 as one can be found there in 1900 and 1910 with the right age and Pennsylvania as a birthplace.

I don’t know if Mary Stewart was their mother or aunt or cousin. She appears to have lived next to a large Borst family but that family never lists Anna, William or Catherine as being part of their family. They do have a Susan but there is a two year age difference and both are listed in the same census records. Additionally I can find documentation that one Susan married a Porter and the other Susan married an Evans so I am confident there were 2 Susans living near each other. Any information on Catherine, Anna Mary, William W, or Susan or Mary Stewart would be greatly appreciated.

I am seeking information about the parents of Welthy A. Borst, b. 21 May 1849 and d. 31 December 1919. I am assuming she was born in or near Middleburgh, NY. She married Augustus Rickard in 1869.

The family records I have (but could be wrong) state that she is the daughter of William I. Borst (b. 30 November 1824 & no death date)
who married Catherine Hemstreet b. 23 June 1822 & d. 31 October 1871.

I can't find any matching records. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thank you,
Joanna

Unfortunately, the first pages of the "Borst Book" are filled with erroneous information for which Charles Borst gives no source. Schoharie County was not settled by whites until 1713, so no Borst could have been born there.
The data on Charles' line starting from the late 1700's seems to be accurate, but there is also some inaccurate data on the final page.

I am assisting another Genealogist/researcher with regards to Martin Borst and his wife Susan Borst. Martin died Died Feb. 28, 1889 (Age 76 years 3 mo. 16 days). His wife Susan is buried in the People's Cemetery in Schoharie County
New York, USA (reference: http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GSln=bo...;). She died May 3, 1902.

Tenth Census of the United States, 1880, Seward, Schoharie, New York; Roll T9_931; Family History Film: 1254931; Page: 298.D; Enumeration District 194; Image 371. Martin Borst, his wife, Susan Borst, his son-in-law, George Best and daughter, Weltha Best. Another daughter of Martin and Susan was Angelica who married a John Henry Ottman on 14 Jan 1868. Angelica was born in 1850 and died in 1932.

I have followed the line through the 1930 census and am at a dead end. If anyone knows of any living descendants/next of kin, the information would be greatly appreciated as we are attempting to return a Funeral Card for Martin Borst to his rightful descendant.

To see other on-going research for Funeral Cards and Genealogy, please see http://funeralcards.blogspot.com/.

Thanks,
Darlene

Jannigje L. Borst on March 21, 1918, in Lopik, Holland.

Janny L. Manasse: Dutch resistance, Holocaust survivor
1918-2008 | Carried messages, weapons throughout Holland before capture, torture by Nazis.

September 23, 2008

BY LARRY FINLEY Staff Reporter/lfinley {at} suntimes(.)com
It was painful for Janny Manasse to tell strangers about her days in the Dutch resistance during World War II and the almost 20 months she spent in a German concentration camp. But she did it for her sons and for history.

“After the movie ‘Schindler’s List’ came out [in 1993], I applied to Steven Spielberg, who wanted to document all of the surviving Holocaust people,” said her son, Joseph. “They sent a film crew to do a video of both my parents. That was what Spielberg wanted to do — to help educate the next generation.”

Mrs. Manasse told about torture and depravation at Ravensbruck camp in Germany. Her Jewish-born husband, Henri, told about his escape from Westerbork camp and his months in hiding in Holland.

Mrs. Manasse, 90, died on Sept. 8 in the Coventry Village retirement community in Northbrook. Her husband died in 2003.

“The filming [in 1996] was very difficult for them,” he said. “My mother did it more for me, at my urging. My father was more open for it. If you watch these tapes, you can still see the pain.”

His mother was born Jannigje L. Borst on March 21, 1918, in Lopik, Holland. She was in nursing training in 1940 when the Germans bombed and invaded her country. She became a member of the Dutch resistance, carrying messages and weapons, and providing hiding places, fraudulent identification and ration cards for Dutch Jews, her son said.

“Men were not allowed to travel,” said another son, Robert. “Males were picked up and put in work camps. She was smuggling information from her home in Amsterdam to the Hague to Rotterdam. She also provided illegal ration cards and hiding places.”

She married in early 1942, a non-Jew marrying a Jew, shortly before a Nazi edict that banned the marriage of Jews and non-Jews, and was arrested by a Dutch collaborator after she lent her passport to a Jewish woman who tried to use it to flee to Switzerland.

“My mother was arrested in Amsterdam and taken to prison,” Robert Manasse said. “For six months, she was tortured and interrogated to extract information, but my mother said she never divulged anything about the resistance movement.”

Her husband had escaped from a camp that was a staging point for transit to the Auschwitz death camp, in Poland, the son said, and stayed in hiding until the liberation of Amsterdam in May 1945.

The couple and their four sons came to the United States in 1954 on a program sponsored by a church group in Holland. She worked as a housekeeper until becoming a nurse’s aide. Her husband got a job as a carpet layer.

“Her passion became the Selfhelp Home” on West Argyle, Robert Manasse said. “It was founded for refugees and Holocaust survivors, and that became her calling — to help them.”

He said that, after six months in a church basement, the family lived in a small apartment in Lake View and acted as a clearinghouse for families arriving from Holland.

“She would stretch a can of Spam and a box of macaroni and an onion into small portions to feed everyone,” he said. “She would ask the butcher for bones to put in the pot for soup. It was like war rationing.”

Mrs. Manasse enjoyed traveling, “swimming at the ‘Y’ three times a week” and riding her bike “like Dutch people do,” he said. “Then, in June, she had a stroke, which left her left side paralyzed.”

The morning she died, she asked for her usual bath and put on clean clothes, he said.

“She said, ‘Let me lay down,’ ” her son recounted. “They put her in bed. She put her arms over herself, and she died.”

Mrs. Manasse’s survivors also include two other sons, Henri and Casey; seven grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. Services have been held.
