Being that Bortnick is an unusual last name, I have always wondered about the orign of the name and family history.
My great grandfather's name was Vasil Bortnick and I believe he came from the Ukraine and initially settled in New York in the early 1900's. He was married to a woman named Millie Temptition.
Shortly thereafter, the family moved to Ohio near Youngestown. Vasil then died in his early 30's from pneumonia.
My questions are:
Is there a common place of origin in the Ukraine for the name Bortnick?
Is the name Bortnick commonly connected with the Jewish religion?
When my great grandfather died - they took a picture of him standing up in his coffin with all the other mourners in the picture. Since I have never seen a picture like this before, is anyone aware of a traditon where the dead person is photographed in such a manner?
