The surname Boshears used in Campbell County, Tennessee is a derivative of the surnames
Brasseur and Brashear(s).
The first six generations of the family have been researched on a national basis, including the highly
acclaimed work of Dr. Charles Brashear.
Additionally, I have prepared a booklet on the history of the Campbell County, TN Boshears
family. Here is a brief summary of my findings:
Using the surname Brashears generically, Robert Brasseur (French Huguenot, settled in America in
about 1635) to Benoit (Benjamin) Brashears to Robert Brashears to Samuel Brashears. Two sons
of Samuel, Robert C. and Basil, moved to North Carolina about 1750. Robert C. Brashears was
the father of Asa Brashears who was the father of Nathan Brashears/Boshears.
According to the late Dr. Norman Parks from his book on the history of the Boshears family, ""Two
sons of Asa Brashear, who was among the first Brashears to settle in North Carolina, moved to
Tennessee. Jesse settled in Rutherford County and his descendants there spell the family name
Brashear. Nathan took his family to Campbell County at the edge of the Cumberland Plateau. There
his numerous descendants use the family name Boshears."
Nathan Brashears/Boshears, b. c1789, m. Priscilla Hunt 1819; Priscilla is daughter of Thomas Hunt
and Phebe Coffin Hunt, b. Guilford County, NC 1802 (Quaker meeting minutes); it is not clear if
Priscilla Hunt Brashears moved to Campbell County, TN with Nathan; possible that she moved to
another Quaker settlement in Indiana where some fellow Guilford County Quakers moved to
establish another Quaker colony in 1820's; a Priscilla Coffin Hunt remarried in 1827 in Indiana and
presented herself as a widow (Quaker meeting minutes); Nathan m. Jane ?, a Cherokee, sometime
after 1820; oral family history indicates that a Nathan Boshears is head of this part of the family;
Nathan and Priscilla/Jane had the following children:
Melinda Boshears, b. c1820, possibly m. James Paul 1841, no return given
Linna Boshears, b. c1823, did not marry
Jeremiah Nathan Boshears, b. c1825, m. twice (see below); 1844 and 1871
[Jeremiah Nathan Boshears was known in his later years as Nathan Boshears]
1820 Guilford County, NC census shows Nathan Brasher and wife; no children
1830 Campbell County census shows Nathan Boshears, wife, and 2 small children (age 0-5)
1840 Campbell County census [0001-000111] shows Jane Boshears as head of household
Jane, age 30-40, head of household (2nd wife of Nathan)
male, age 15-20, b. 1820-1825; Jeremiah Nathan
female, age 15-20, b. 1820-1825; Linna
female, age 20-30, b. 1810-1820; Melinda
Therefore, Nathan Brashears/Boshears moved to Campbell County after 1820 and died between
1830 and 1840.
Jeremiah Nathan Boshears shown on public records as Jeremiah, J., J.N., and he appears as
Nathan Boshears on his TVA grave removal record. He is buried next to his wife Sally at Bakers
Forge Reinterrment Cemetery in Campbell County. The graves are unmarked, but a map shows the
exact location.
