I am doing the genealogy for a cousin (surname Bosma) who is descended from Walle Bosma. A copy would be greatly appreciated. The 1920 census for MA indicates that perhaps more than two brothers emigrated to MA. Perhaps sisters as well.

I have been able to go back pretty far on GenLias for him. Would you be interested in this info?

I believe they are related. The Bosma family would be my wifes grandparents. Her father Gary Guffey is still alive and met his father. His mother and father were never married, and he took his step-fathers name of Guffey. The elder Bosma died a few years back and was a retired police sergeant in Bothel Washington which is in King County (Seattle). There are numerous Bosmas still living in the area. If you can provide more information, I'll check with my father-in-law to confirm.

Thanks,
Rick Adamson
adamsonrd@msn.com

I have received a letter from Holland asking for information about the whereabouts of Sybe Bosma, born 12/20/1887. I located him via the Ellis Island records, first in Rochester, NY, and then he moved to King Washington where he(Sam) and his wife Lena(Schurer) had three children, according to the 1930 US Census. The oldest son was named Andrew, born in New York and died in King, Marysville, Washington on 12/13/1986.

Do you think that is the Andrew Bosma that you are related to?

Johannes Bosma from Leens, Groningen, does seem like the best match from the emigrant records. Their children's names are Delia, Alice, Josie, Raymond, Alga/Allie?, Alberta, Jennie, and Catherine. They don't seem like Frisian names, so I don't think he is related to George Bosma. I'm not directly related, but am working on the different Bosma families to add them to my compilation of Dutch Immigrant Families of Northern New Jersey.

Well, I was given a book on the Boschma Family from a very nice gentleman in the US and it traces back quite some way (1700's) and the name Bosma is right throughout the book! Maybe we are more closely related than we realise hey? Anyway would appreciate any information that you might have and I am happy to answer any questions you might have for me as well. Thanks for any help...... Michelle

Hi Michelle,
From what I've been finding out, Bosma is a very common name in that part of Holland (Friesland). Boschma, because of the 'ma' at the end, is probably also from Friesland, though if there's any connection between the two names, I don't know. It so, if probably goes back a long way. There are bundles of Dutch names that are very similar - Bosman, Boersma and so on. I've been getting some interesting feedback on the Bosma name. It might not be of much interst to you, but I'll dig it out and send it on if you want. If you've only just started looking up your family name (I'm very new to it too) try some of the Dutch sites or do a search for words like 'staamboom' (Dutch for family tree, loosely) to get started. Happy hunting. Burt Bosma

Hello Gabriele,

My Grandfather (Theodorus, born 1890) had a brother Willem, so it is possible there is a connection. But, of course, Bosma is a common name in Friesland, and Willem is very common all over Holland. I've been tryin to trace them, but haven't had much luck. Do you have any other details? My Grandfather was born in the town of Frederiksoord, and his father was born in Steggerda.
Hello Annette,

Yes, I'd love to find out more about the Bosma family in Friesland. As I said, my Great Grandfather's name was Hermanus Bosma and he was born in Steggerda in Friesland in 1862.
Bosma family in Friesland

Hi Steve,
Sorry, I don't think I can help you. My branch of the Bosmas (the small amount I know of them) seem to have only been in the Dutch province of Frisland. (I wasn't even aware there was a German bit till I looked in the atlas after reading your note!) According to my Father (now no longer with us) the name Bosma - and just about any other Dutch name ending with 'sma' is very Friesian. Other Dutch provinces have similar names but with different endings - 'man' or 'skma' and so on. Bosma is fairly common, as is Bosman, which I suspect has the same roots. (Dutch words ending 'an' or 'en' are usually pronounced with the 'n' dropped. So 'lopen' which means to walk is loosely pronounced 'loper'.) As I said in my note, my family came from places like Steggerda and Steenijkerwald, smallish towns in Dutch Friesland, so I probably have no connections to help you with. A pity for both of us. And you probably already know that Bushman is a fairly direct translation of Bosma or Bosman.
Sorry I couldn't help.

BURT BOSMA

PS: My name, by the way, is actually Albertus - a good catholic version of Albert. I changed the 'e' to a 'u' because I liked it better.

To Burt Bosma. My name is Steve Bushman and I currently live in Minesota as does my entire family. Our Grandfather Albert Bosma was from Friesland and when he came to the United States he changed his last name to Bushman. We do not have a clue as to why. We believe our grandfather was from or close to Wymeer - Ostfriesland - West Germany. Hinderk Bosma was a brother to Albert. I,m looking for my German or Dutch ancestry so please contact me if you know of Albert Bosma. He came to the United States aroun 1906 - 1908.

Bosma family in Friesland in the 19th century

(Actually, I think all Bosmas originally came from Friesland - as do all Dutch names that end with an 'sma'.) My Great Grandfather's name was Hermanus Bosma and he was born in Steggerda in Friesland in 1862. His eldest son, my grandfather, was named Theodorus and was born in 1890 at Frederiksoord, also in Friesland. There were six other children - Ana, Catherina, Willem, Jozeph, Wilhemina and Gerardus.

My grandfaterh maried Christina Staal, who was born in Steenijkerwold in 1861.

I'd be interested to hear from anyone who may have come across any other Bosma family members with these names from around this period to help me trace the family roots back a little further.

I notice that one of the other Bosma messages is about a Bosma family from Groningen, also with someone named Wilhemina. Groningen is next door to Friesland, so there might be a connection. Of course, Wilhemina was a very common Dutch name, but you never know.

BURT BOSMA

Hello Joan,

This is terrific information that I haven't come across before. It is definitely my great grandfather. I haven't come found details of his brothers and sisters before, nor of his parents. So you've given me a whole new generation! I would be very grateful for any other information you might have on him or his wife - and anyone before them as well.

I'd be fascinated to know how you came across this information. I haven't really searched that hard, but 20 years ago when I was in Holland I cross examined my elderly aunt, who could go no further back than Hermanus himself - she had nothing on his parents or siblings. (She did, though, tell me that he was a builder who died falling from a ladder.)

Are you or someone you know a descendant?

Thanks again for the information. Please email me if you have any more you can tell me.

BURT BOSMA
