Daniel W. Boss

I am seeking the parents of Daniel W. Boss born 18 Jun 1825 in Rhode Island. Shown on the 1850 census living in Scituate, Providence, RI. with wife Lucretia Ann Matterson also know as Lucy A. Daniel his wife and son moved to Mechanicsburg, Cumberland, PA between 1850 and 1860. Daniel is shown on the 1860 census as occupation Photographer which he spent the next 45 years in that lively hood. He died 28 Mar 1905 and was buried in a cemetery know as Chestnut Hill just a short distance from Mechanicsburg. His 1st wife Lucy died around 1867 as her headstone is almost unreadable.

While Daniel is not related to me his home is next to mine and his impact on my community for those 45 years and the innumerable number of family and individual photos he has taken and led me to many previously unidentified relatives.

Please see the tree I have posted for him and his small family. Any help would be greatly appreciated

Thank you

Forrest Brackbill

Patty,

I am wondering if you found out anymore on Josiah or a Joshua. I believe that my GGgrandmother, Renewed, lived with her brother in the 1880's & than she moved at some point to Ovid, MI where my Ggrandmother Melissa lived with her husband William Watkins. My grandmother, Maud Watkins was born there, & than she married to the Detroit area after marrying my grandfather, Fred A. Hubbard.I would love to find out more on the Boss family, especially the parents, siblings of Renewed's. There must be something on your Josiah, have you found anything out. Someone should know something about the family in Washington Co. There are so many Boss' in that area, & someone should know Joshua & Josiah was one in the same. It sure does get frustrating, doesn't it. The Prosser family is another family that I believe is in someway related to the Watkins or the Boss family, also.

Boss family in NY

I have an 1850 census for a Thos Boss born in 1800 in New York with his wife listed as Harriet. Their children are Peter, Mary, Smith, David, Moses, Louis and James, that I know of. I would like any information that might be found on him. I haven't been able to find anything. The census does say that he was born in New York, but there are not other records of him. I would appreciate any help with this. Thanks

Hi Janice - I've been doing a little more work with the census records, especially the pre-1850, listing all the Boss men in Washington County in each year 1810-1840, then highlighting the families with sons in the age group to include Josiah (born 1817). So far it looks like Charles is the best bet, assuming they were indeed in Washington County.

I think my next step will have to be probate and land records, with which I have little experience. And it will have to wait now until we return to Tucson and my records in late Sept. Until then, have a good summer and happy travels. -Patty Sue

I don't know of any Boss' going to N Carolina but I am sure there are many there, as they are most places. As far as I know in my family, they were in RI & my GGgrandmother lived in NY, as her husband, James Warner lived there. Renewed went to live with my Ggrandmother, Susannah Melissa Watkins,
who lived in Ovid, MI. She went by her middle name, however. Melissa was married to William Watkins from Durhamville, NY. Renewed Warner must have gone back to
Exeter to take care of her brother, Joshua, I presume.

My maiden name is Boss and my line goes back to a Benjamin Boss born 1757 in Newport, Rhode Island and died 1848 in Scituate, RI after fighting in the Revolutionary War , three wives and 23 children. His wives were Amey Taylor, Mary Hopkins and Sarah Peckham. Have been to Rhode Island three times checking out all my relatives there. Very interested in these pictures.

Sorry, Esther, no Texans, no Frankie (Frances?), no Harold, no Robert in my line of R.I. and California Bosses. Great grandfather George from R.I. to Calif in about 1892. Grandfather Harry (not Harold) and brother Howard born R.I., younger brothers born in Calif, all before 1920. Good luck with your search.

Janice - I didn't realize that a whole year has passed since your last msg re those elusive Bosses in early RI. Are you thinking that Joshua and Josiah may have been brothers? Certainly sounds possible to me. Now if we could just find the next earlier generation! Josiah/Mary Ann Sherman are my 3rd grt-grandparents and I have good data from there til now if any of it would be helpful to you. Josiah's son, Joseph apparently lived in and around So RI, but his son George (my grt-grandfather brought his wife and young family to So Calif in early 1890s. My father, Mervin "Pat" and I were born in Los Angeles, my children in No Calif. Then it starts to get messy again with grandchildren and grt-grandchildren scattered from coast to coast!

I live in Tucson AZ, where it is getting HOT, right around 100 for the last 2 weeks, and that's just the beginning. My husband and I usually leave town and head to the cooler NW - Oregon and Washington about the 1st of June, return in late Sept so I expect to be on the road for a while but I do check my e-mail at least once a week, wherever we can find Internet hookups. I promise to answer quicker next time. -Patty Sue

Angie, Thanks. There seems to be a possibility that he was not even born in England. Family lore has it that he might have gone from the U.S. to England early in life. Not sure in a child or young adult. The same information then has him coming back to America as a young adult. The same information has it that he may have some family ties ib the New York state area, I do know he married a woman from that area in the 1900 to 1915 timeframe. Think my best bet is to maybe search that side and come at him via my grandmothers side.

thanks

Bob

Hi Sue, thank you for the information, at this time I have not found any of my Boss going to either Lewis county, MI or MN. I have really just begun on this surname as I always thought it to be Boyce, what a surprise it was to find it Boss in the RI and NY census.
Kristin

Hi everyone, just wanted to check into this site to see if there are any other Boss/Boyce members here.
I believe my first Boss ancestor was a Jonathon born in Rhode Island married to an Eleanor ?
I have several census from there and NY and find the name went from Boss to Boyce sometime mid 1850s when they migrated to Cayuga County New York then onto Oswego County New York.

If anyone out there is interested in this Boss/Boyce family let me know, I would be interested in finding more family from anywhere.
Kristin DeCare
