“Michael Cline entered military service as a drafted militiaman in October, 1778 in Captain Taylor’s Company of Colonel Francis Locke’s Regiment. They marched to the Charleston, S. C. area and then to Purysburg on the Savannah River. Their forces moved up and down the river so as to prevent the British from crossing. They were near the forces of General John Ashe at the line of disaster at Brier Creed (March 3, 1779). He also stated that they were near the Continental Troops of General Benjamin Lincoln, but did not join them. He was shortly afterwards discharges, following expiration of his tour of duty (April 1779).
“In 1780 he entered again as a volunteer horseman under Colonel Alexander Brevard. He marched through Mecklenburg Co. to the camps of General Nathaniel Greene. Their troops were joined by Col. William Washington, arriving from Virginia. He was discharged in December, 1780 after serving a tour of three months. His final tour of duty began in August, 1781 at which time he was drafted as a militiaman in Captain Davidson’s Company of Mc Dowell’s Regiment. Captain Davidson later resigned and was replaced by Captain William Tabor. He served on the Catawba Frontier, engaged in scouting duties against the Indians. He was discharged at Fort Charles in November, 1781. There was also mention of another tour from November, 1783 until May, 1784, under General Rutherford.”
