It is my understanding that my branch of the Boucher family has a Canadian connection. My earliest known relative was Matthew Boucher ( Bowshelder)b.
either in France or England 1700 d. 1748 in VA. Your reply on the history was very interesting. Please share any additional information you have.

Sheila,

I looked up this record for you, my good deed for the day.

If you don't have a subscription to use the Drouin Collection on this site, (where I found this) you can try familysearch.org. for free. Go to the pilot program there, and then Canadian Church Records. There's no indexing, except within the images and it really helps if you know the parishes. There's a guide on this site, but again, it subscription.

This was found in St-Antoine-de-Padoue; Richibouctou, Kent, NB.

Joseph Boucher Dit Laronde of Berthier, PQ. and Vermont

In 1792 a 66 year old widower named Joseph Boucher Dit Laronde brought a 5 day old child to the church in Berthier, Quebec, for baptism as “Joseph”without a surname. Parents of this child were listed as unknown. Godfather was Joseph Courchene, a 1/4 Iroquois, voyageur( guide to the wilderness areas.) Two years later Joseph Boucher/Laronde married the sister of Courchene’s wife. Joseph Boucher/Laronde had many children from his two marriages and died at 70 years old in 1798. His second name, “Laronde,” meaning “the circle,” is only used by him and his descendants.

Young Joseph may have been raised by Marguerite Boucher/Laronde ( daughter of Joseph by his first marriage) and her husband Jacques Valois. Later church records describe young Joseph as “Joseph Dit Valois,’ with conspicuous notations clearly intended to show that he was not a true Valois.

Joseph Dit Valois lived a long life with two marriages and many children and died in 1875 in St Albans, Vermont as Joseph Bushey. He and his descendants have used all three surnames, “Valois,” “Boucher” and “Laronde,” over the years.

Bonjour Marge! Thank you and everyone for their responses. I haven't tried any Canadian sites yet but I find
gw.GeneaNet.org a very useful site (with lots of research contacts)which should locate Matthew Boucher for you. I'm interested in your "Bowshelder". Is that a surname variant or an misspelt occupation? I am attaching a doc file of extracts from a Powerpoint presentation I made to the Huguenot Society of South Australia which I hope will be of interest to you all. But the doc file has been rejected. A GEDCOM is wanted, and I haven't worked that out yet. Best wishes from OZ to all.

Bernard Boucher
Kernewek Lowender

Don, sorry for the delay in getting back to you. Very busy. I live in South Australia where we have a large contingent of lively Cornish migrants in the towns of Kadina, Wallaroo and Moonta, called little Cornwall, on the Yorke Peninsula, and run an annual festival.Great fun with a genuine Cornish atmosphere and goodies.
To answer your question, my family moved from France to Worcester, UK, and from there to London. We have no connection with Canada that I know of.

You can get in touch with your compatriots through a first contact on these sites:

Yorke Peninsula
www.yorkepeninsula.com.au

District Council of the Copper Coast www.coppercoast.sa.gov.au

The Farm Shed
www.farmshed.net.au

South Australian Tourism Commission
www.southaustralia.com

Good hunting

Marge, I would be happy to pass on my research to you, but the problem is that it is all documented in MS Word format which the message boards do not transmit. The only way I can see to get my work to you would be if you would be willing to let me have your email address. I am currently working on a series of articles for a family history collection which cover the location of my ancestors in France and their flight to the West of England where they worked on the coal barges of the River Severn for some 30 years before moving to London. I'd be most interested to hear about your reunion group and speaker. Best wishes, bernard.boucher2@bigpond.com

Boucher Family - the Huguenot/Canada connection

My family originated in the Deux-Sèvres department of the Poitou-Charente region in mid-western France. We lived in the capital, Niort, where we worked in the leather trade. This region included the ancient provinces of Saintonge, Aunis, and Poitou, the most Protestant districts of France, in which surviving Huguenots fled from cruel persecution by their own government. Canada was discovered in 1497 but there was no useful colonisation of the country until 1608 when French families from Aunis, Poitou and Brittany arrived and opened up a lucrative trade in animal skins with the royal port of Niort. My family escaped to England, but many Bouchers settled in Canada. Plenty more info if you need it.

For those who think their lines lived in Cornwall England try the Search Database on the 'Cornwall Online Parish Clerk' web site. Many of the parishes are being added all the time...but for the Boucher/Bowcher it does cover most of the Meneage area. The IGI is great to use but but these have more details from the Parish Registers, Bishops' Transcripts and other Church records:
http://cornwall-opc.org/
FreeBMD, GRO index, is also helpfull if you are looking for them in England after 1837:
http://www.freebmd.org.uk/cgi/search.pl
They also do the England Census which is easy to use:
http://www.freecen.org.uk/cgi/search.pl
There is also the 'Online Cornwall Census Project which works great:
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~kayhin/uko...
There is the Visitations for several England Counties, Cornwall Visitations has some on Bourchier:
http://www.uk-genealogy.org.uk/visitations/index.html
If you are interested in other sites like London Times ect... I do have a few place you can search these?

My Boucher/Bowcher were Richard & Elizabeth (Uren) Bowcher. He was chr. 17 Sep 1732 Cury, Cornwall, ENG. but lived in Manaccan. They had five children. His parents were Francis and Mary but have no idea where they came from.

Any searchable Canada and Australia web sites would be great?

..don

I see Boucher/Bowcher is in many of the Cornwall ENG Parish Registers, mine were from the Meneage area; St. Keverene, Manaccan, St. Martin in Meneage ect... Can you identify where yours were in England?

Mine start in early 1700s but the surname goes back to 1640. If you use Bucher and variants then it goes back to late 1500s.

If mine are related to those in France then maybe Canada is where I should be searching. I yet have no early connections in Australia and USA.

If any were in the Cornwall Meneage area would like to talk to you...don

William Woods & Margaret (SPARKS) BOUCHER

Am looking for any information on my great-great grandparents William Woods & Margaret (SPARKS) BOUCHER

According to entries in the 1881 Canadian Census in March, of Carleton, Ontario Province, Canada, William was a hotel keeper of Irish ethnicity born in Ontario in 1826 and Margaret was born in Ireland in 1826 in Apr 1843. They were married in Canada, presumably before 1860 when their oldest daughter, Frances "Fanny" Alberta was born. Of note, their oldest son was also named William Woods BOUCHER (he married a Catherine Sophia Rainbird MILLER)

To my knowledge, they never left Ontario...I have no information concerning their deaths.

They had a number of children, one of whom, Lillian "Lily" Maude BOUCHER [b.] 18 Dec 1879, was my great-grandmother.

Any information would be greatly appreciated...

Thanks,

David
