Most Bourbeaus probably did descend from (H)Elie Bourbeau mentioned in the previous post. However, I have not been able to prove my line is related to this individual. My 8th gr-grandparents were Simon Jean & Francoise (Tard*) Bourbeau [also Bourbaut, Bourbault, etc.].

Simon was believed to be the son of [Se]Bastien & Marie (Gobin/Goban), born ca 1620-5 in Cisse / Quincay (St-Pierre-aux-Liens). He married Francoise prob. Dec. 1, 1657 @ Montierneuf (St-Jean-l'Evangeliste), Poitiers.**

He seems to have travelled between Quebec and France on several occassions, having first arrived in Quebec ca 1662 ("Simon Bourbault"). Their 2nd daughter, Louise, was baptised Jan 23, 1667 @ Poitiers (St-Jean-Baptiste).

Simon was a master carpenter, and died Feb. 12, 1692 at Charlesbourg.

I find no evidence that this line has any connection to the Acadian Deportation.

*Also LeTart(re)
**Marriage contract by [H]Elie Maxias, Nov. 4, 1657.

Hi, yes I think you are related through the Bourbeau line to my wife. I have not pursued the line concentrating for the moment on other family names such as LaMothe, Lanctot, Starnes and Girard. Your details sound fascinating and make me
want to add the Bourbeaus to my research list even though the Victoriaville family names you mention do not ring a bell.
We will be in touch again.
Thank you for the contact.
Clark
Re: Bourbeau, New York State, Lake Champlain region

Hi,
I believe most, if not all Bourbeaus are descended from Helie Bourbeau of La Rochelle, France. His sons came over to New France in the early 1600's around the same time as Champlain (the French voyager). They lived and raised families in Acadie or Acadia. They are documented to have lived in Port-Toulousse alongside the Mi'kmaqs in 1723 and in 1777 they appear on the census at Carleton, Quebec. They are believed to have escaped the deportation of 1755 with the help of the Mi'kmaq and settled along with 36 other Acadian families in Carleton. From there it is believed that they migrated down river to Trois Rivieres and later founded the town of Victoriaville, Quebec.

Although some Bourbeaus were able to escape the deportation, it is quite plausible that many of them did not. There was more than one brother that came across in the early 1600's, so they were probably a good sized clan by 1755. Many of the Bourbeau namesakes outside of Quebec are most likely deported Acadians. They kept very good records of the deported peoples, mostly by ship, town or destination. Of all the deported Acadians, it is believed that only about 20 or so families ended up in New York. You can search these lists quite easily by using google or www.Acadian-home.org

I am also a descendent of Helie Bourbeau and have been slightly obsessed with the family history lately. We ended up Beauchesne in Victoriaville, Quebec. I would suggest checking the Acadian sites and deportation lists for any families located outside of Quebec. Boston, Virginia, Louisiana, Maine, and Florida were a couple of the deportation sites and they kept good records of who was on the different ships. The Bourbeau family was recorded to have been living with the Mi'kmaq in Port-Toulouse in 1735, 20 years before the expulsion.

Hope that helps.
Miki

Re: Indian Background for Bourbeau

Most likely it is the Mi'kmaq, which is the tribe the Acadians lived with during the founding days of New France. Relations between Acadians and the Mi'kmaq were the most intimate of any European/AmerIndian relations at almost any time in history. They share many customs and even had a great deal of influence on each other's language. The Mi'kmaq were also responsible for helping the few families that escaped the deportation, of which Bourbeau is one. They also joined forces (led by a Bourbeau) and attacked the Brittish on a few occasions.

I am also a descendent of the Bourbeau family. I have been trying to find marriage certificates for AmerIndian/Acadian unions, but they are hard to come by. It is also difficult to be sure due to name changes and differences in spelling, but if you are a Bourbeau and your ancestors are of Trois Rivieres, Champlain, Port Royal, Baccareau, or New Brunswick chances are it is the Mi'kmaq you're looking for. I will let you know if I come across any marriage documents.

Hope that helped.
Miki

Hi,
I believe that you are related to my family. We are descendants of Helie or Elie Bourbeau of La Rochelle, France. One or more of his sons were among the first settlers in New France and actually lived and raised families in Acadia until the expulsion/deportation in 1755. From what I can gather, they escaped the deportation with the help of the Mi'kmaq (explaining our Indian heritage). The deportation split many families apart, but our bloodline, along with 36 other families settled in Carleton, Quebec and are named on the Census of 1777. I've also found excerpts stating that a Bourbeau lead a group of Acadians and Mi'kmaq to attack and defeat the Brittish on at least 3 different occasions.

From Carleton, they traveled down river to the Trois Rivieres area which is not far from present day Victoriaville. It is a bit difficult to track because many people went by dit names (nick names commonly given to soldiers) or the names were recorded incorrectly with different spellings according to which country was in charge of the Census. Somewhere along the way, my Grandfather, Paul Emile, a direct descendant of Elie Bourbeau, ended up with the last name Beauchesne, which was most likely Bourbeau dit Beauchesne at some point. It is also interesting to note that almost all of the 36 family names I found on the Carleton census of 1777 were also found on an old parish of Tingewick book I found not too long ago.

Many of my family members still live in Victoriaville. Their surnames are Beauchesne, Barre, Lavigne, Laroche and I'm sure there are more I don't know. If you would like I can ask some of my cousins if they have any information on your family members?

Nice to meet you! Sorry If that was too much info...I'm sort of recently obsessed:)

My great grandfather was George C. Bourbeau. My Nana, Esther, was his youngest child. She was born 13 Aug 1907 in Millers Falls, Mass. I also have a copy of the Bourbeau book that Edward (the author & my Nana's cousin) autographed for me... :) I'd love any additional Bourbeau pictures that you might have that aren't in the Bourbeau book. Also, I'm trying to find out more info. about my great grandmother (George C.'s wife), Esther. Her maiden name was supposedly Guillaume (translated to Williams for the states) and from Canada. I know that they were married in 1887 in Sherbrooke, Quebec, St. Michel. She was a singer there. Also, my Nana Esther may have originally been named Rose E. according to Mass. birth records I found. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks... :)

Hello,
I am trying to research my great grandmother Julia (Julie, Julianne) Bourbeau. Her parents were born in the Province of Quebec. According to different census reports, I find that she claims N.Y., Canada, and Mich. all places of her birth around 1852 and 1853. On her marriage document (she married Octave Mitchell (Michel) in 1867 in Wyandotte, Michigan), the witnesses that signed the document are Raphail Girard and Astin Bourbeau. I am trying to figure out who her parents were, but I am not having much luck. I've really only started my quest, but the name Girard struck a chord with me. My mother wrote a letter to me about 18 years ago stating that my grandmother (Julia's daughter) was related to the LaBelles, Lezzotes, Jambeaus and Cousinos. If any of this makes any sense to you, let me know. Thanks
Cindy
Benld, Illinois

hi I am amrried to a Bourbeau and have done extensive reserch concerning the family. I have pictures of the Bourbeau family that settled in Turners Falls Massachusetts, and your line is among them. There is often a mix up with the father's name, sometimes it is Clifford and other times it is Cleophus, A lot of my info is from the book "Three Centuries of Bourbeau's in North America" also census records and records from the Turners Falls town hall.

My grandmother is a Carignan; her father was Louis Benjamin, from Champlain. Louis had a brother Gedeon. I have been seeking the parents of Louis and Gedeon, and found only that they were "Pierre and Marie".So by a process of elimination, and later confirmed, that they were Pierre Carignan and Marie Adelaide Pepin, married in July 1843. I have been working on another family branch, so have put this aside. I do not know the line any farther back than that. I do believe that his family is a Bourbeau Carignan. And, my maiden name is Audette (Audet) and that in 1743, a hundred years earlier, Audet married Marie Josephe dit la Chance Pepin. Strange. Alicia

I'VE JUST RECENTLY BEGUN RESEARCHING MY FAMILY HISTORY ON MY MOTHER'S SIDE - WHICH IS THE CARIGNAN FAMILY. MY GRANDPARENTS IMMIGRATED FROM QUEBEC TO MASS. IN THE EARLY 1900'S. I THINK THEY WENT FIRST TO MASS. THEN SETTLED IN PROVIDENCE,R.I. MY GRANDFATHER WAS ONE OF 19 CHILDREN. MOST OF THIS SIDE OF MY FAMILY STILL RESIDES IN PROVIDENCE OR QUEBEC. I WAS TOLD AS A CHILD THAT THERE IS ONLY ONE FAMILY OF CARIGNANS THAT IMMIGRATED TO NORTH AMERICA AND ANY CARIGNANS ARE DECENDED OF THE SAME STOCK. DON'T KNOW IF THERE'S TRUTH TO THIS OR NOT. MY GRANDFATHER'S NAME IS LUCIEN OLYMPIUS CARIGNAN.

One of my gr-gr-gr-grandmothers was Marie Clemence Langlois. She married Jean Baptiste Pilette on 25 Nov 1823 at Assumption church in Sandwich, Ontario. According to the church record, her parent's names were Augustin Langlois and Angelique Bourbeau. I can't find Marie Clemence's baptism or her parent's marriage in the Assumption church records, so I guess they were not from that parish. I can't find the parents in the PRDH or "Genealogy of the French Families of the Detroit River Region". Are these names familiar to anyone?

Louis Benjamin Carignan was born in 1850, lived and died, 1916, in Providence Rhode Island. His parents were Pierre and Marie Carignan. I think the only way to find Pierre and Marie is to go back to the time of name changing. Somewhere I picked up the following info - "Son of Pierre Bourbeau chose to be named after his grandfather's maternal name, which was really Besnard (Benard)". Can anyone help me start with info regarding the "son of Pierre Bourbeau"? I can think of no other way to get to my gggrandparents.

BOURBEAUS in Victoriaville Quebec, 1901

Hi Everyone.
I am researching the family of Aurelie VERSAILLES who married Richard BOURBEAU. They lived in Victoriaville according to the 1901 census along with her mother Dame Aurelie GIRARD, the widow of Marc Amable GIRARD, the first Premier of Manitoba. In 1901 she was 32 and Richard was 31. The census did not show any children present. Does anyone know if there were any children in this marriage?

Thank you for your attention to this matter.
Clark Shea,
Surrey B.C.

Bourbeau, New York State, Lake Champlain region

Keep in mind that BOURBEAU has many spelling variations.

I am looking for an Angeline BARBEAU b 1820s Quebec, and along with husband Harry CARPENTER and many kids, settled in Peru, Clinton County, New York area (not limited to BARBEAU spelling).

Rouses Point is a community closely associated with Lake Champlain. Lake Champlain was a very important trade water route between (roughly) Montreal, Quebec, Canada and New York City until around 1900 when railroads took over. During the 1800s, whole canaling families used to make a meager livelihood as husband, wife and passel of kids livied on freight canal boats between Montreal, along the Hudson River (including man-made canals like Champlain Canal) and New York City. It was not uncommon for emigrants from Quebec to settle along various trading points of the Hudson River (Vermont; in NYS in Albany, Troy in Rensselear County, Rondout/Kingston in Ulster County, New York City; New Jersey).

Consider in your research counties in New York State around the Hudson River (Columbia, Dutchess, Essex, Franklin, Greene, Orange, Putnam, Rockland, Saratoga, Warren, Washington, Westchester), and the five boroughs of New York City (Manhattan; Bronx; Brooklyn, Kings; Staten Island/Richmond; Queens), and northern New Jersey counties, and western Vermont counties.

Diana CARPENTER (a daughter of Angeline BARBEAU) (m Nelson ROCK) moved to Massachusetts (Holyoke, Hampden county and South Hadley, Hampshire county).

I am sort doing a one-name study of all BARBEAUs b Quebec who spent time in the Lake Champlain region. BARBEAUs of Quebec seem to have scattered all over the place!

HI,

I think that your Esdras was brother to my Honore as I see them both at St. Georges de Windsor site showing them both having children baptized around the same time.
The only Carignans that I find in North Dakota in the early 1900's are John M. Carignan, and a Gedsie Carignan. Are these names what you are looking for? John is married to an Emma, Gedsie is married to Aurilla.
I also see a William Carignan living near Gedsie. He has a brother living with him named Gidion age 24 in 1920. He is married to Delia.
I would be glad to share what information on these families I found, if they are who you are looking for.

Yes, I am the great granddaughter of Honore and Marguriet Houle Carignan. Their son Dosithee..aka Dustin Levi.. known to me as Levi D. Currier. He married his cousin Marie Olivine Carignan daughter of Dosithee Carignan and Josephine Brouillard.
I too have the family tree back to the Helie Bourbeau.

I have been facinated with the search for this family. The name changes have been most challenging. I had been looking for Levi Currier , son of Henry Currier and Marguerite Hall. Thankfully a copy of my great grandmothers baptismal certificate has been a big help

I beleive that Honore and Dosithee where brothers. I would like to find if they have any other siblings. I have benefited from a fellow that has done research on the Currier's, he has furnished me with some good information. I just don't have it handy at the moment. I beleive there was a brother named Eli also.

Do you have any siblings for Honore??
