If your Octave was born circa 1836, I believe I may have found your him living with Joseph Sans Quartier (dit Bourelle) in the 1851 Canadian Census. The children are Joseph 1827, Octave 1836, Toussant 1836, Celestin 1841, Virginie 1843, Ludger (probably Eugene) 1845, Bazile (probably Basil) 1848, and Leon (probably Napoleon) 1851.

Re: John A. Bourell of Richland County, Ohio

John Andrew Bourell was born August 31, 1828. My documentation agrees that he married Rachel Hunter on December 29, 1862 in Olney. Rachel was born March 16, 1847. One of their five children was Ada, born September 8, 1870. She married Byron Lester Goodwin April 8, 1888 (unconfirmed) in Olney. Byron was born March 12, 1850 and died July 5, 1940 in Topeka, Kansas. Ada died July 29, 1963 in Austin, Texas. They are both buried in Rochester Cemetery in Topeka, Kansas.

I have not found John's parents. Perhaps you have found them in the intervening years since you posted your request.

One of there twin daughters, Emma Bourelle Rager was my great grandmother. Ada and Emma were sisters. I have that Matilda's parents were Francis Exavier and Marceline "Mora" Couture. Based on his age on Census', that would put his birth in about 1804 and his death in about 1886.

Do you have anything in addition to the above?
I printed a copy of your 8 Jun 2005 e-mail for Jean Francois Bourel (b 1761) family. It seems to have disappeared from this Board. I have a marriage from LDS film 1,290,056 for St Constant, PQ on 29 Jan 1844 for Maxime Bourell, age of majority, son of deceased Manuel BOURELLE and Catherine GADOUA to Lucy CORKEDEL, native of Ireland, age of majority, dau of Joh and Sarah McKalley, US. Present were brothers of the groom: Francois, Isaie, and Eusebe Bourelle.

The above e-mail lists a Catherine GADOUAS as wife of Jean Franocis Bourelle (b 1761). Are there two Catherines.? Can anyone resolve this?

I see some other minor discrepancies. Would like to compare notes with anyone.

Hi,
Regarding the Martin connection: I have a small hand written notebook containing information on my Bourell family which I believe belonged to Odell Bourell Burch, daughter of Joseph P. Bourell (son of Celestin Bourell and Celina Ponton) and Ollie St. John Bourell (daughter of Laurence St. John and Lucy Depatis). The following are excerpts:
- Grandpa & Ma St. John (Laurence St. John and Lucy Depatie) and their family.
- Grandpa Bourell (Celestin Bourell and Celina Ponton) and their family.
-Great G-P St John (grandpoma, Lielan Martin [could be Mortin], [died] age 85, St. Ann, Jan 1875; Edward St. John, [died] age 35 kill by horse, 6 children, Uncle Joe living 1917, 65 years old.
-Great Grand MP Bourell (Mary Ann Martin, died Feb 1883, age 84, Earl Park; Petr Bourell, died, 8 children, 3 dead, old age over 50.

[ ]-I added

In addition to Lielan and possibly Mary Ann Martin above (from the notebook), I also have Matilda Martin, b. Dec 1848 Canada, married to Basil Bourell.

I would love to find further information on the Martins identify in the notebook.

Hello again, Lin,

I'm afraid I was thinking of Matilda Couture--there was one--when I reread your post and saw that it is Matilda Martin, married to Basil Bourelle, in whom you're interested. I don't have any information about her, but the Martin family of Quebec has a long and colorful history. She may be related to Abraham Martin, "The Scotsman," for whom the Plains of Abraham are named. The Plains are where the decisive battle for Quebec was fought between the French and the British (the British, of course, won).

I am descended from Marie-Anne Martin, the Scotsman's sister.

Deborah

Hi, Lin,

It was great to see your post. Doing research on this branch of my mom's family has always been a challenge. Now, at least, I know more about the way the spelling has evolved. I believe I'm descended from Pierre Bourelle's son Octab/Octave/Toby because my aunt told me this was her grandfather's name. Unfortunately, I have no proof of this and can't seem to find any record of his marriage or children. But my grandfather was Phillip (most often spelled with two "l's") Bourell/Burrell, born Benton Co., Indiana. Since this is one of the locations the Bourell clan seemed to have moved to from Kankakee Co., Illinois, this makes sense. Phillip and some other family members moved to South Dakota, but probably not before making a stop in Iowa, I believe. He married Mary Rose Delima Montagne/LaMontagne in the 1890's; she was descended from the Bacquet/Baquet dit LaMontagne family of Quebec.

Matilda Couture is descended from Guillaume Couture, an early pioneer of Quebec, who acted as servant and interpreter to Father Isaac Jobe, who died trying to convert members of the Iroquois nation to Christianity (the movie "Black Robe," directed by Bruce Beresford, is loosely based upon Jobe and Couture's travels). The Coutures also intermarried with the LaMontagnes in the St. Boniface area of Winnepeg, Manitoba. Guillaume Couture, who, after being held prisoner for some years by the Iroquois (and escaping with help from one of them), negotiated a treat with them, is remembered with a statue at Point Levi, across the river from Quebec City. He settled in that area. My mom and aunt, now both deceased, still had contact with Couture cousins who could furnish information.

I do hope one of the Bourell kin out there can help me make the transition from Phillip up to Pierre. Feel free to e-mail me offline.

Deborah

Hi, just read your post from August 2004, Lin. Don't be too sure that "Burl" is not part of the Bourel/Bourelle family. I am descended from Octab/Octave/Toby Bourelle, son from Pierre Bourelle's marriage to his second of three wives, Marguerite Vanier. The Napoleon who married Mathild Couture was one of Octab's half-brothers from Pierre's first marriage. By the time the family moved to South Dakota, my grandfather was spelling the last name "Burrell." It looks as if the original spelling when the family moved from France to New France was "Bourel." Glad to encounter some cousins!

Deborah

Their son,
Philip Joseph, married Catherine Lucy Agnes
Keenan. We found Basil and his family on the
1880 census in Nebraska with 3 of their
children , Albina, Philip and william.
I recently learned that Basil had a Brother
Napolean, and that he lived also in
Nebraska.
I hope that some of this info rings a bell
with someone out there!
thanks, Lin

That was her!!! She did have her daughters with her and it was in the 50's.

Yes, my Grandmother and Mother also had a fiery temper. They were both very stubborn. I'm sure we're related. Let me know what you find.

Thanks! Looking forward to hearing from you.

Margaret

Lawrence Keenan

What relation is Catherine Lucy Agnes to you? I think we are related. My maternal grandmother was Anna Lola Keenan. She lived in Fond du Lac, Wisconsin when I was a child. She's been deceased for many years now. My mother's name was Mary Ellen Pruitt Langenhorst. She died just last November.

I remember an Aunt Agnes coming to Mayville, Wisconsin (where we lived when I was a child)to visit from British Columbia and her last name was spelled differently than yours, but pronounced the same. My grandmothers parents were Lawrence Joseph Keenan and Marjorie Nancy Haffner (but she used several names Mary may have been one of them). I have pictures of my grandmother and her parents.

I remember Aunt Agnes was very, very old when I met her. She said she and her husband pioneered in British Columbia and that, at that time, she was still getting around on a snowmobile in winter.

Are we related?

Margaret Langenhorst Wheeler
