Just FYI for any future researchers, Urbain Boutin did not die in Cass Lake in 1903. He died in Quebec in 1900.

I know it has been a long time since this was originally posted, but I thought I would let you know about the newest information. Urbain Boutin did not die in Cass Lake in 1903. He actually returned to Canada some time before 1891 and lived the rest of his life near his siblings. He died 15 June 1900 in Ste-Marguerite, Dorchester, Quebec, Canada.

I am looking for information about my grandfather Marion Charles Boutain, born Dec.1, 1910 and died Mar. 13, 1934 and my grandmother Edna Swear Boutain, born Aug. 29,1910 and died Mar. 4, 1994. Both lived in Louisiana all of their lives mainly in Jefferson Parish. Any information would be appreciated.

(I had not, however, known his death date before this.) I have been working on my genealogical research for about 30 years. I am certain that my Urbain Boutin is the person your patrons are looking for. When I hear from you by email, I will send you my phone number or address, whichever is best for your patrons. I would also be happy to email you a copy of a genealogy report showing the information I have for Urbain Boutin's family. I have his ancestry to France in the early 1600s. I have a large database, but not all, of his descendants.

Patrons at my library are looking for Urbain Boutin, died 1903 in Cass Lake, Minnesota. Previously lived in North Dakota and possible Canada. Would this be the same Urbain Boutin? My library patron is not a computer user, but would really like to trace some ancestry. Could we set up some means of communication if this is likely to be the same person.

I'm looking for information on the Boutain history. I do know that they had come from canada, but we do not know if they had changed their name when coming to these parts. My grandfathers name is Alex Boutain (who died some time ago) and was married to Sadie. I believe there is some connection between Canada, Iowa, and Minnesota (the northern part). My relatives resided in northwestern part of MN. I'm in process of doing a family tree. Any help would be great.

I noticed several references on the board here regarding Urbain Boutin. He would be my great-great grandfather. Does anyone have the lineage from him to the present. I believe he married Margaret Dejarlais, and their daughter was Mary, DOB 1853? From there it is fuzzy. Anything would help.

It's been a decade since I've done research, so I am a bit rusty, but wanted to reply so we could begin sharing information.

My paper text regarding Jacque Boutain reads:
"About the year 1879 Jacque and Marceline, along with some of their grown children started out for the newly opened territory in northern MN. . . . their destination was north of Crookston, MN in the Euclid and Dorothy area where some members of the Boutain family had previously settled.

"They traveled by covered wagon. . .

"Since there weren't very many French people in this ares, son Jacob was said to be known as Jacob Butler instead of Boutain. He never legally changed his name, however, Other sons legally changed theirn names to Butler after settling in Grand Forks. . ."

My information then goes to son Jacob and son Pierre (my descendant), then Pierre's daughter Olive who was my great grandmother.

The text portion was from a book: "A History of Red Lake County, 1976"
Also from Lester Audette book titled The Family of Zotique and Nellie Audette dated May 30, 1983. In it, Lester writes "The above information was related to me by Aunt Amie, who was the eldest child of Jacob and Mary and well remembered all the details, including the move from Charles City, Iowa. Current address: 1206 Barrette St, Apt 201, Crookston, MN 56716 (as of 1984, that is).

Hope this helps. Be glad to share other information, though it may take me a bit to get through what I documented years ago!

Boutain/Boutang connection

Hello Peggy,
I am looking for a possible connection between the family name Boutain in northern MN and the family names Boutin and Boutang in the same areas. As I understand it, most of the Boutain family is descended from a Jacques Boutin/Boutain (b. 1813) who came from Canada and settled in Charles City, IA. He was married to Marcelline Fortier (b. 1821) and had at least two sons born in Iowa who followed him to Red Lake County, MN -- Jacob and Pierre. I believe that Jacques Boutin/Boutain was probably a cousin or perhaps even a brother of my ancestor Urbain Boutin/Boutang who evenually lived in the same general area in MN. That would make Jacques a direct descendant of Antoine Boutin who came to Canada from France in the mid 1600s. The family is well documented.

One caution, however, is that there is a Boutain family in France and may or may not be connected to your family. Please let me know if you learn any more about your ancestry and especially if you think it might connect to mine. I have a lot of Boutin information here and, as I said, a lot is available on other sites and at the LDS site. Good Luck.

I received a letter from you requesting information about my branch of the family tree. Annie Eli Boutain were my Grandparents. My Dads name is Andrew Boutain. He was born 12/4/1919..He married Evangeline "Eva" Starken on 2/26, 1946. They had two children..Julie Boutain Tydlacka. and Janice Boutain...Janice "ME" was born 6/25/51..mairried Milton L Peterson born 6/5/48..Married 9/5/70 @ Dorothy..They have 2 children...Chad L Peterson born 1/1/74 and Ryan J Peterson born 7/16/76. To date both boys are single. Our address is 62073 Kirkwood Dr. Warroad MN 56763 our phone number is 218-386-3704.
