I just met a lady who has papers from Jean George Boutilier on his voyage over on the Sally. She lives in Calgary, but I can't recall her name at the moment. I am sure she would be happy to know more of her ancestors.

She told me she always thought to be a "huguenot" descendant but the history of Montbeliard says differentely now.

If somebody can help her, i am sure she would be thrilled.

Let me know if you can help and I will try to reach her somehow.

Ginette
There is a Nelson Boutilier born 1 Sept 1872 with wife Mary born 4 July 1875 and daughter Pearl V. born 9 Oct 1899, living in the Sheet Harbour Area at the time of the 1901 Census but there is no links to the 1911 Census for this family. A check of the 1911 census for any of these people comes up blank, other than a Pearl V. in another family

not sure if this will ever get to you or not. but Burton melbourne boutilier was my husbands great grandfather. He married Caroline markie( marquis) i dont know which spelling ) and he was the son of james nelson & mary bell harnish. all from the sheet harbour/boutilier's point families.

the person most likely to help you would be my mother in law, suzanne saucier ( boutilier) daughter of the late eldred andrew boutilier & joyce taylor. eldred ( andrew, as he was called) was the son of burton & caroline. caroline only died in 2005.
eldred died in 1969 i think, he had 3 daughters, suzanne ( my mother in law) elizabeth, ( still living) and fern ( died at threee years of age) my mother in law would love to get to know you.

Hello,
Thank you for your post. Catherine's surname was Haley before she married Henry Boutilier. The families in Nova Scotia were I think from France, but some came over on the Sally, which would make sense if they were of Guernsey. eh? Will look at LeBoutiliers in public records as well. Thanks again. Hope to hear from you soon if you have any other possible leads.

The spellings for Boutilier were actually LeBoutillier. They may have dropped the Le once in America. They came from the Jersey and Guernsey Islands off of England. I have two LeBoutillier's who married sisters from my Smith family who came from England to Iowa in 1844.The LeBoutillier's were from the Jersey Isles. Would you have any idea what Catherine's surname was before she married Henry Haley ? Religions were often changed once arriving in American and occupations were often changed to find jobs once they landed here. If you could give the birth and death dates for some of your ancestors, especially Henry and Catherine, I could perhaps help with your search.
Leta leta.sheaffer@verizon.net
I am searching for my ancestors, the farthest back that I can verify, through records is that I am the great-great grandaughter of Henry & Catherine Haley of Little Bras d'or. I'm not sure where to go from here as there are alot of Boutiliers with the name Henry in it. There were typically coal miners and Roman Catholics to this point. I have found others but with different religions and occupations. Anyone with information on Henry and Catherine would be greatly appreciated.
Janice Boutilier Langille

Hi there! I got a LOT of information on the Boutiliers! Email me at jessiboo_17@hotmail.com and I can send you all that I have. I have information on the journey over and I have most of the ancestor lineages of the Boutilier's as well. I have quite a few descendants as a lot of us look into our pasts, but I'll see what I can dig up. I come through the Boutilier's on the Sally twice. I have a ship list too of the ppl that came on the boat. I have some pictures too, not of the boat but the area we come from. Like I said, I'll get the email ready and when you email me I'll send it all to you. I should have it ready tomorrow night. Happy Boutilier hunting!! :)

Jessica Boutilier Ross

Lewis Burton Boutilier is actually Lewis ALBERTON Boutilier.
Lewis was my great-grand-father and also has more than 3 children. My grand-father was also named Alberton Wesley after his father. So if anyone would like to have the info, I've got it. As well, I will only give ages for the people still living. Possibly birth dates. Depends what they say.

Jessica Boutilier

I am searching for info. on my great grandmother who was the daughter of George Boutilier and Eliza Anne ?Demone. Her name was Lilias Boutilier born 1875, she married Elkanah Primrose Hollingsworth. As far as I know, she was from a family of 9 children, Samuel, George William Hubbert, Cynthia Ellen, John, Frank, Lilias, Orrin, and Lucy. They were still in that area in 1901, at least some of them. I think George may have had a brother Jacob. So far, I am stopped from going back beyond George. Looking for help!!!!
Lawrence

Hello:
I am having trouble bringing up the 1881 census. I got my information quite a while ago. If you go to http://automatedgenealogy.com/census/cache/index.html, you can view the 1901 census. Look in Subdistrict: Beach Meadows, Shelburne & Queens, NS and Elkanah Primrose Hollensworth(spelled different) is there, family 42, also his wife Lilias and more children including my grandmother, May Hollingsworth. I will keep looking and see if I can find the 1881 census again. If I can help any further, I will be happy to.
Lawrence Moody

Alexis Boutilier (Boutell)

According to the research I've done, Alexis Boutillier (called Boutell in my sources) married Margaret Howison, probably in Canada.

Margaret Howison is the sister of my ggg grandfather, Robert Howison who married Nancy Wadleigh in either Scotland or England. They emigrated to Canada sometime in the early 1800s. They lived in Kingsey Falls, Quebec for a time, where Margaret Howison was born, sometime around 1815. My gg grandfather, John Wadleigh Howison was born in Kingsey Falls in 1822.

Margaret Howison married Alexis Boutell and they had at least one child, Betsy Boutell. According to my research, Betsy was born in Longale, near Montreal, on May 16, 1841. Betsy married Alexander Pinegord, a Chippewa County, WI lumberman in 1863 near Montreal, and moved with him to Chippewa Falls soon afterwards. Pinegord was originally from the Drummondville, Quebec area, near Kingsey Falls.

My gg grandfather John Howison, brother of Margaret Howison and son of Robert and Nancy Howison, moved to Chippewa Falls in 1869 and died there in 1893. Margaret Boutell, Betsy Pinegord's mother, died in Chippewa Falls in 1881.

Susan Helf
Seattle

Hi I am in search for a Mary Eva Boutilier born about 1888 & died 07 Jan 1947 who would have married a Thomas Martin born about 1883 & died 10 July 1950. The date of births could very well be incorrect. Sad to say but I do not have a marriage date. I have only names of chilren but there maybe more. They are in no order, William, Mary Theresa who married Laurier Lloyd Beaulieu (he was in the army and they had 3 children that lived, 2 died at birth), Marguerite and Tress (could be a nickname). Is there anyone out there that could help me with this family. All the help in the world would be so greatly appreciated.
Geneva (or Jennie) "Mary Eva" BOUTILIER was born 4 May 1888 in Terence Bay, Halifax Co., NS and died 5 Jan. 1947 in the Victoria General Hospital in Halifax. She married Thomas Edward MARTIN on 23 Sept. 1909 (or 23 Feb. 1901) at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Roman Catholic church in Prospect, Halifax Co.

Here is her obituary as it appeared in the Halifax newspaper:

Monday, 6 January 1947
Mrs. Mary Eva Martin--a well known resident of Kline Heights, Mrs. Mary Eva Martin passed away Sunday at Victoria General Hospital. She was 59 years of age. Mrs Martin who was born at Terrence Bay had resided in Halifax many years before moving to Kline Heights. She is survived by her widower Thomas E. Martin as well as by three daughters, Cecilia, Mrs Joseph Peters; Marie, Mrs Lloyd Beaulieu; and Margaret, Mrs. Murdock Sampson, all of Kline Heights; one son William, at home, one sister Mrs Annie Purcell, Dartmouth and two brothers Herbert Boutilier of Spryfield and Will Boutilier, Halifax. Funeral will take place from Halifax funeral home in time for an 8:30 Mass to St. John the Baptist Church, Armdale. Rev. P. F. Martin will officiate. Interment in Gate of Heaven Cemetery

======================

Mary Eva was one of at least 9 children of John Andrew BOUTILIER & Elizabeth ("Betsy") HOWARD who married 7 Nov. 1877 in Harrietsfield, Halifax Co. Her BOUTILIER ancestry goes back through the St. Margaret's Bay area of Halifax County to Lunenburg County and the original settlement of the "foreign protestants" in Lunenburg in 1753. From there her ancestral roots were in Montbeliard (now a part of France).

I have not followed the children of Mary Eva & Thomas MARTIN but you should know that Thomas was apparently originally a SLAUNWHITE (or SLAUENWHITE) and some of his children appear to have continued to use this surname. For more information you might want to visit this website:
http://worldconnect.genealogy.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?o...

Please use all of this as a direction to be followed up and confirmed through primary records.

Elizabeth

After the British took control of Nova Scotia, settlement was first established in Halifax (1749) and then they looked for settlers who would be loyal to them (rather than the French) and would help develop this new land. Trying to find willing & suitable settlers in England was unsuccessful so they turned to Europe when many protestants were eager for a better life somewhere else.

Over the period of 1750-1752 thousands of settlers were recruited in three main areas: the Palatinate region of Germany (these German speakers were in the majority); Montbeliard (a french speaking, independent principality under a German prince - now a part of France); and Switzerland (some spoke German, others may have spoken French). They came by ship to Halifax (with much loss of life enroute) and were kept busy and fed by the British in Halifax until 1753 when some 1400+ settlers were transported to Lunenburg to begin settlement of this new town. [Some of the "foreign protestants" remained in Halifax and the "little Dutch Church" was used by them - they spoke "deutsch" (German) and were erroneously referred to as "Dutch".]

The BOUTEILLIER (now BOUTILIER) families were among the settlers who came from Montbeliard. They spoke French and some brought documents written in French with them. In the initial assignment of land, many of the French-speaking settlers received land in the areas now known as Northwest and Blockhouse (Lunenburg County) - this was well inland. When land on the coast (around St. Margaret's Bay) became available a generation or two later, many of them opted to move there. This included most of the BOUTILIER families.

I hope that gives you some relevant background. As I said in my other posting, you should be able to follow the ancestral lines of both Thomas & Mary Eva (BOUTILIER) MARTIN through the website link I provided. Errors may have crept in so verification through primary records is always recommended.
[Mary Eva's ancestor Jacques BOUTEILLIER (aka James BOUTILIER) was born in Etobon in Montbeliard on 4 Aug. 1835 and he arrived in Nova Scotia in 1752 aboard the ship "Sally".]

For more on the "foreign protestants" and the settlement of Lunenburg, you might want to visit the Lunenburg GenWeb site at:
http://www.rootsweb.com/~canns/lunenburg/index.html

I hope that is of assistance.

I found Elkanah Hollandsworth in the 1881 Census for Mill Village, Queens County, Nova Scotia.
He is the son of Alexander of Hugh Alexander of Henry of Henry of Henry. The youngest Henry emigrated from County Down, Ireland, to Nova Scotia around 1780, if my memory serves me correctly.
I would be interested in anything else you can tell me about Elkanah's descendants.
Doug Hollingsworth

William Robert Boutilier son of Alexander Boutilier/Eliz. Locke

Looking for ANY information on this line -

WIlliam Robert Boutilier, born about 1860 in Halifax, NS, son of Alexander Boutilier and Elizabeth Locke.

William married first about 1878 to (suposedly) a Jessie MacFarlane/MacFarland (etc.) who suposedly died in NS. They had at least one known child of this marriage; Kitty P. Boutilier. William moved to Lowell, Massachusetts as he is on the 1910 census as a lodger and 50 years old. He went on to marry a second time (20.MAR.1929 in Lowell, MA) to a Jennie Langille who was also born in Halifax NS and removed to Lowell, MA.

I am researching this line from descendants of Kitty Boutilier (married twice - William Bumpus and then Louis W. Trombley).

ANY information on this line (William R. Boutilier) would be greatly appreciated!!

Thanks!
Mike S
Manchester, NH - USA
