correction James Bouton died in December 1859 according to the 1860 Illinois US Census report. My error I hadn't looked at the information correctly. The mortality schedule in the 1860 Illinois Census is for the year 1859 not 1860.

John Bouton 1635

I am once again resuming some of my research on the Bouton genealogy. I have been been working on other parts of the family tree as relates to my great grandfathers wife, Margaret Haire/Hair/O'Hara. Have all but completed the research there which was both challenging and fun. Now am trying to put together something on the Bouton family tree for my cousins. I was researching and writing on John Bouton Sr. and have seen that some people believe that the John Bowton who came over on the Assurance is not related to the John Bowton who settled in Connecticut in what was first called Newtown. That the the two men are entirely different individuals. The first reason being that the JohnBowton on the Assurance was headed to the colony in Virginia not to the Massachusetts Bay Colony. What adds interesting to this assertion is that the ship left Sngland on of after July 24. There is no date given for the ships actual departure date. But assuming it was pretty close to that date the question arises why did it take at least 4 months for the ship to arrive in Boston when such a trip normally took 6-8 weeks. In other words it took double the time usually spent on sea to arrive at their destination which in this case was not their destination! One possibility is that the ship did indeed land at Jamestown before heading north and arriving in Boston Harbor in December of 1635. A through study needs to be done of the passengers as to where they did indeed settle. I looked a few names on the passenger list just to get a sense of where they may have gone. All of the 7 or so that I looked at went to Virginia. I checked with the Virginia State Historical Society. They sent me an email indicating there was no evidence that a John Bowton settled in the Virginia Colony based on those who had paid their own passage over and those for whom a land grant was granted. However the message stated that if he went into one of the surrounding counties further research would need to be done and suggested a visit to their library and or the hiring of a professional genealogist was in order. Also no record was kept of ships landing or sailing out of Virginia until 1820. SO we have no mention of a landing date fr the Assurance if it landed in Virginia. But would the ships landing in Virginia first and then going up the coast to Boston account for the arrival in Boston some four months later. I certainly can't imagine the ship had enough provisions for 212 passengers for four months. I also discovered that in late August 1635 the worst recorded hurricane north of North Carolina occurred hitting Jamestown on August 24, if my memory serves me correctly. It appears that the hurricane churned up along the coast hitting landfall on Long Island. Along the Rhode Island coast storm tide surge was 22' and the effect of the hurricane was felt as far north as the Plymouth Colony which was flattened by the winds. The devastation it is reported was evident for the next fifty years. In Massachusetts thousands of tree were reported destroyed by the hurricane. I can only imagine what the ships crew and passengers saw upon their arrival to the New World! My hunch is that the ship went first to Virginia. In order for the ship to return to England it would need provisions for its crew and anyone else returning to England. Where were they able to get such provisions? Since Boston did not experience the devastation suffered in Virginia and up the coast to Long Island were they hoping to get provisions there? Also did John Bouton decide to remain on the ship? Did he die en-route on the Atlantic? Did he disembark in Virginia? Or is he the same man who ended up in Connecticut and married Alice having three children before dying sometime before 1647? My one hunch is that, statistically speaking what is the likelihood of two John Bowton's coming to the colonies at this time? While it does not prove that they are one and the same person. It certainly enhances the likelihood. The John Bouton that I believe we can with certainty claim is the John Bowton Sr. who most likely died in Newtown, later renamed Hartford, before 1647. I will tend to accept that the John Bowton who came over on the Assurance is one and the same person until there is indisputable evidence that indicates that they are two different individuals. If anyone can add to what I have written or correct any mistakes in my thinking I welcome your input. thanks, Dick Bouton

Regarding maps, keep in mind that the earliest settlements did not have the largest territorial claims.

In the 17th century, the Dutch claimed (and settled) Manhattan Island and the surrounding areas; Sweden claimed an area along the mouth of the Delaware River.

This was very helpful. I had no idea that Virginia had a bigger land mass back then. It clears up alot of confusion I had about when/where people were.
I found a photo of John Bouton Jr. It is on my family tree page (texasboughtons) and it blew our mind. There is no doubt my husband and his father and brothers are related to this man. The resemblance is remarkable!
I have seen a "photo" of the signature with the Bowton spelling. However I think that is a misunderstanding. It looks like Bouton written in the "old style" where the way the connect the letters made the u look like a w. What is your feeling on that?

Hi Again! :-) John took the ship the Assurance in the fall of 1635 which was bound for Virginia. It arrived in Boston and he debarked there. It is my understanding that the ship did not have a scheduled stop in Boston. So why did he leave the ship there and I wonder whether or not after landing in Boston did the ship continue south to Virginia? Keep in mind that Virginia extended initially into what is present day New York to the Hudson River. It appears that John remained in the Boston area till the following year when a group of colonists moved to what is present day Connecticut. It would appear that it is there that he met his wife and was married. There are no written records of their marriage. We know for sure that his wife's first name was Alice but there is no certainty on what hr maiden name was, though she is usually referred to as Alice Kellogg. As you are probably aware they had three children, John, Richard and Bridget. When John Bowton, Sr. died Alice married the widower Matthew Marvin. The name got changed over here after John landed. There is evidence that his son John spelled his name Bowton at some point in time. There is a signatures that was found with that spelling. John Bouton, Sr. was a minor figure but his son John would become more well known and historically documented. An example is in Norwalk, CN where there is a stone plague dedicated to the founders of the city with John Bouton's name listed. This is the son of the first John Bowton/Bouton.

Hope this is helpful and not totally repetitive for you.

Richard Bouton

715-774-3150

Richard,
THanks for your reply. Believe it or not we will be staying with family in Ipswich while there so it will be quite easy to research that possibility. I do know that there are Boughtons buried in a local cemetary. I also spoke with a geneologist from Ancestry and they have a consultant who will help us in England for a smaill fee. I am really hoping to return with answers.
My father-in-law will be 85yrs old this July and has always believed that side of his family was old Britsh. When we started doing this for fun and got to the controversy around John he got very upset. We want to get answers for him while he can still remember that we did. It would mean so much to him.
I agree about James Bouton's work and have not considered it in my research. Have you researched where he arrived here in the U.S.? Any further information you have that could help would be greatly apppreciated. Whatever I find out in the UK I will share with you when I return.
Karie Boughton
214-732-5295

Hi Karie, Sorry to be so tardy in getting back to you. I would suggest that the best place to go is the Society of Genealogists located at 14 Charterhouse, Goswell Road in London. It will cost you to use the facility but the last time I was in there in 2009 they stated it would be good for me to go in the basement there to begin doing research. I went through the records for Kempston Parish which were on the second floor- typed up in the 1950's I believe from the original Latin. Keep in mind what parish records exist list date of baptism, marriages and when someone died back then the date that is recorded may be the date of the burial not the date of death but check on that to be sure when you are there. I have not done much more work since I was over there in 2003. It is pretty clear to me that we are not of French descent, at least not for John Bowton who came over in 1635 on the Assurance at age 20. James Bouton's book is very untrustworthy, even for more recent information I have discovered. So I would recommend collaborating evidence before citing any of his work.

There is the possibility that he came from Ipswich. And that may be one lead to pursue. I went to Kempston Parish near Bedford. They have nothing there that is to be shared but itwas fun to just go there and see the small parish church there. I still hold out the possibility that John came from there. The best bet as I already noted is the Society of Genealogists in London. Be sure to map quest it. It is off of a main street in east London on a short dead end street or road. It is easy to miss and the British numbering system can be confusing. Best of lick on your trip! I am jealous :-)

Richard Bouton
superiorview4u@msn.com

re: James Benedict Bouton, son of Timothy Bouton

James Benedict Bouton is my great great grandfather. Everywhere I look he is listed as dying July 3, 1862 in Hazel Green, Illinois which is in southern Cook County, Illinois (south of Chicago). Last fall I was in Carroll County, Illinois which is where Milledgville, Illinois is located. In the 1860 US Census Jame's son, John DeForest Bouton was listed along with his wife and younger children as living in Genesee Township, Whiteside County. Also listed in the mortality schedule is a James Bouton who died in December of 1860 in Genesee Township. He died of old age according to the mortality schedule since he was listed as being 81 years old. It stated he was born in Connecticut. There is a cemetery in Genesee Township named Hazel Green. I have been there. I was unable to find any grave marker for James Benedict Bouton but that is not surprising. It is an old settler cemetery. I have to say that I doubt the information which appears to come from James Bouton's book on the Bouton-Boughton's that has him dying in July 1862 in Hazel Green, Cook County, Illinois. It is my contention that he died in Genesee Township and is buried in Hazel Green Cemetery in Genesee Township. John Deforest and his wife Betsy and their children would eventually move to Winnebago, Illinois where they are buried in the Winnebago Cemetery. One of those that was with them was my great grandfather, George W. Bouton their youngest son. He would marry Margaret Haire in 1875 and they would eventually live and raise their family in Pecatonica, Illinois where my grandfather, Judd Bouton was born.

This information will most likely challenge not only the date and place of James Benedict's death but also that of his wife Sarah who is reported to have died before him and before he traveled west to Illinois. If Sarah did indeed die before James moved to Illinois then she will have had to have died before December 1860, not in 1861.
In the that volume I saw listed in the section for Genesse Township, the name:
Bouton, James 81 M Ct Dec Farmer

Also listed in the 1860 US Census for Genesse County were the following names:

Bouton, John D. 51 M Ma Farmer
Betsy 49 F NY $800/
Henry 18 M NY Farmlarborer
Judson 15 M NY Farmlaborer
Ja's 14 M NY
Emma 10 F NY
Geo. 6 M NY

I also found a cemetery named Hazel Green, a small settlers cemetery, located in Genesse Township near the county line with Carroll County, Illinois.
The nearest community of any size is Milledgeville in Carroll County. I am inclined to question James Boughton's book which states that James died on Jul 3 1862 and was buried in Hazel Green, Cook County Illinois.

I fone acceptes that James Benedict Bouton died in December 1860 in Genesee Township one would be inclined to accept that James was also buried locally in Hazel Green Cemetery in Genesee Township, Whiteside County, It also raises an issue with regrad to the time and place of the death of Sarah Bouton, James wife.

Any suggestions?

Bessie Bouton belived to be murder victim 1904 Cutler Mountain, CO

I am not related to these families…

Longmont Ledger (Longmont, Boulder County, Colorado)
Dec 30, 1904 Page 7

VICTIM IDENTIFIED

Sister in California Believes Mrs. Bouton Was Murdered.

DENVER,Dec. 27--The News this morning says: Bessie Bouton, believed to be the young woman who was found on Cutler mountain with a bullet in her brain and her face burned beyond recognition, was, with her alleged paramour, Milton Franklin, a guest at the Albany hotel from May 2nd to Jul 13th. This was established by the hotel register last evening.
The couple registered as G. Bouton and wife, but it is believed Franklin took the name of the woman, who had been married to Bouton in Syracuse and separated from him four years ago. The man at the Albany was a gambler. Special dispatches to the News from Syracuse, New York and Santa Barbara, California, give many additional facts, all of which seem to corroborate the belief that Bessie Bouton was the victim.
Mrs. Charles Nelson of Santa Barbara, where Bessie Bouton and Franklin visited, says she received a letter six weeks ago from her sister, saying she had quarreled with Frankling, and the next heard of Bessie Bouton was when she read descriptions of the Cutler Mountain victim.
W. J. Bodno, whose wife’s elopment was told in special dispatches to the News fro Butte recently, is on his way to Colorado Springs to see if the remains are those of his wife. It is thought he is mistaken.
Hi,

Roxena is the daughter of my great great great grandfather. Sometime after her marriage to Elijah Wood they moved to Carroll county, Iowa. I was at the Carroll County Courthouse in Mt. Carroll, Illinois last week. I found the documentation for property that Elijah and Roxena owned and later sold. They sold the property on September 27, 1847 three months before he died in Milledgeville, IL in December 1847. I made a copy of the sale found in the Grantor ledger at the courthouse. records were not kept that I am aware of at that time for where he is buried.

John married Elizabeth Roberts b. 1765, d.4 Sep 1850 in Nassau, NY.
Seth married Elizabeth's sister. (Unfortunately I do not know the given name of Seth's wife.)
I appreciate your input. However, the birth date (on Seth's memorial marker) indicates my Seth was born 1 Jan 1797. The Seth you have indicated was born several years later. From the best research I've been able to do, I believe my Seth is Seth, Jr. found on 1840 U.S. Census in Virgil, Cortland County, NY. (Seth, Sr is also in the same town.) Seth Sr was born 29 Dec 1861 and was the son of Jehiel Bouton and Anne Finch. Would live to pin his down but don't know where to search for further records.
Thanks again,
Marill

You must realize
that this is a (2nd) marriage for Shubael Bouton. Here are the names of the brothers and sisters of Seth. Arial, Juliet,Permella, Clark,Peter, & Albert.

I am also related to Shubael Bouton Jr. thru his first marriage to Betsey Watson. This marriage provided three (3) children. Shubael Bouton 3rd.,Eli and Katie.

Shubael Bouton 3rd is my great-great- grandfather. He is the father of Nathaniel Bouton, who is my Mothers Grandfather. My Mothers maiden name was Mildred Elizabeth Bouton.

We are related even if it is down the line aways.

I am very interested in the Bouton family history.

There's a good sized Bouton family in Tennessee. My grandfather, Ernest Edward Bouton, lives in Manchester, TN.

He married Mary Ellen [not sure of maiden name]and had 4 children: Phylis, Tina, Vicky, and my father: Ernest Edward Bouton Jr. My aunts stayed in TN.

My father joined the army and moved to NC married Dorothy Jeanette Finley. They had had my sister, Mary Ellen Bouton (married name: Haywood), and myself, Dorothy Jeanette Bouton (married name: Smith).
Re: Was John Bouton Sr. of Norwalk CT b. 1573 at Ipswich?

I have just returned from London, England. While there I went to the Public Records Office located in Kew just west of London. While there I did find John Bowton listed as having gone by sailing vessel to Boston, Massachusetts Bay Colony. However that was all the further the archives were able to help me at Kew. However in talking with one of the staff I was directed to two other organizations, the Hugenot Library and the Society of Genealogists in London. Unfortunately the Hugenot Library is currently closed and will reopen towrd the end of April. They are moving to a new location. However I did locate the Genealogists Society located off of Goswell Rd. Before going I took some copies of information that has been posted here on the Bouton Bulletin Board. One that intrigued me is the one citing a John Bowton born in Kempston Parish in Bedfordshire now Bedford County. I checked the parish records that had been typed up in the 1950's I believe. The document records baptisms (christenings), marriages and deaths.
One of the things that stands out is the spelling of the name, Bowton. It is interestingt to note that in all the source documents that I looked at regarding John Bowton sailing to these shores is that the surname is always spelled 'Bowton'. He sailed on the Assurance which was bound for Virginia and landed in Boston. He went to Hartford and died in Norwalk before 1647. The manifest indicvates that he was 20 years of age. So far I have found no other information, such as place of origin, for John Bowton with regard to his sailing over here.
In regard to the parish records for Kempston Parish the first record for the name Bowton is 1574 when on March 15 William Bowton died. The earliest christening of a Bowton is that of William son of Robert on Auust 12th in 1582. There is a John son of Robert who was also christened on February 9th, 1586. Indeed there are several children whose father is Robert all christened at Kempston from 1582-97. If you are in interested I can send you a list of all the christenings. There are 8 christenings for which Robert is listed as the father. As you may have noticed the mothers name is not listed. The next Bowton to be listed as a father is a Thomas with his first child, a daughter, being christened in 1594. However there is no Thomas listed as one of the sons of Robert. He has five children that are listed in the parish records for christenings going up to 1604. He had a son named John who was christened in 1601 on September 6. In 1616 there is a Thomas son of Edward who was baptised on the 15 of Spetember. The next father listed is a John Bowton whose son is named John and christened on December 15, 1616. I mention Edward because the last name is spelt both Bowton and Boughton. In a note that was made by the one who recorded Bowton/Boughton are cited as variations of the same name.
At no time is the name spaelled with a 'u' instead of a 'w'. According to the International Genealogical Index/British Isles I received a list of 90 John Bowton/Boughton/Bouton and other variations There was one John Bouton with a 'u' christened in Arlesley Parish in Befordshire in 1591. There was also a John Bowton christened on Februeary 2, 1601 in Boston Parish, Lincolnshire County. There is also a John Bowton christened April 2, 1606 in Chelsworth Parish, Suffolk County. As for John Bouton with a 'u' there are three others listed as approx 1607, 1609 and 1610 two of which are listed as having ocurred in Essex County which is located just west of Suffolk County. There is a John Bouton born in 1605 according to this index but there is no location given for that information.
Befordshire is located just north of London. John Bowton left England from Gravesend, England which is located on the Thames River just south of London. It would seem a logical route for John to go to London and Gravesend from Bedfordshire to make the trip to New England rather than to go East to Ipswich, Suffolk which is a seaport.
It is my tentative conclusion that the surname of John Bowton was spelled with a 'w' not a 'u'. It appaers likely from the christening records that John son of John Bowton christened in Dec 1616 is the most likely candidate for the John Bowton who crossed the Atlantic on the 'Assurance.' Angain this is only tentative but from the sources that I have researched the evidence points to the information recorded at Bedfordshire. If John was born in 1616 and went to Boston in 1635 he would have been 19 not 20. That is the one sticking point but numbeing is not always accurate for dates of birth or christenings or other dates as most of us have discovered. There is often a one year variance. At this time I am convinced that the name 'Bowton' is accurate and that some how the name got changed to Bouton on this side of the Atlantic. I find nothing to verify a 'French connection' at this point in time. I have yet to search the Hugenot Library but hope to get back to London before years end to spend a more concentated time at both libraries.
I look forward to any suggestions or criticisms of my reasoning with regard to what I have written.
I also found that a Matthew Marvin sailed on the ship 'Endurance' in April. He is from Bentley Magna Parish in Essex County. He sailed with his wife Elizabeth and their four children ages 8, 6, 3, and six months. Their names a re Matthew, Mary, Sarah and Hannah. Alng with them were two servants. They settled in Hartford. John as we know was in Hartford and would have met Matthew there. The information on Matthew is written in the book "Planters of the Commonwealth" by Edward E. Banks, Genealogical Publishing Company
Also I could find no information on an Alice Kellogg having come over from England. Ther are two Kellogg brothers whoa re listed in Daniel and Joseph. They lived in Norwalk dying in 1688 and 1707/8. ANy information anyone may have on Alice please let me know. Thanks. Hope this information is helpful. Dick Bouton or is that Bowton....

BOUTONs from Ipswich 1500s

I have been studying this question for several years, and don't think anything has been confirmed, but am impressed by the following facts: There were many BOUGHTONS (by many spellings)in several areas in England, and all were basically poor farmers, which see,ms to be what John was, rather than the son of a count. Also, we do know that he sailed from England, and the idea of this one lone Frenchman on a boat full of English people is odd. And we know that the BOUTONs married the MARVINS, KELLOGGS, etc. who were all from the same area in England. You may want to check the other BOUTON and BOUGHTON Message boards, as there is lots of speculation, but verification from new original sources.

Janet Bouton: Typically, Yahoo notified me that I had a message waiting at http://www.familyhistory.com/rd.asp?id=4246935, then declared that address verboten. Was this the message you promised about other Bouton message boards? Could you please post it on this message board? Thanks.

Was John Bouton Sr. of Norwalk CT b. 1573 at Ipswich?

My great-x-7-grandmother Abigail Marvin m. Jan l 1656/7 at Norwalk her stepbrother John Bouton Jr., son of Alice Marvin by her first husband John Bouton Sr. I am descended from them as well as from her full brother Matthew Marvin Jr. In his l900 Marvin Genealogy, W.T.R. Marvin debunked James Boughton's claim in his l890 "Bouton-Boughton Family" that the Norwalk Boutons were of Huguenot descent. The name was found in Essex and Suffolk a half-century before the persecutions in France. He suggested instead that John Sr. was the "John Boughton, son of Richard" baptized March l0 1572/73 at St. Nicholas, Ipswich. Has John Bouton Sr.'s descent been discovered since 1900?
I have been doing research in my family and I am a descendent of Jehiel Bouton who married Hannah Hall in 1840. My GGgrandmother is Amanda Bouton.

Amanda is mother to my Ggrandfather William Milhouse McDaniel born in 1878. Amanda later married Jacob Cox and had children. I have some pictures from 1900 and I do not know who they are. Could be William and Amanda///maybe even Jehiel.

Your Daniel S. Boughton is my great-grandfather. He was born on June 16, 1827 in either New York or Connecticut, probably Connecticut. He was listed in the 1850 census of Linestone, Warren Co., PA. Daniel married Laura Malvinia Bennett of Pennsylvania on May 5, 1856. They had 7 children and lived in Gratiot, Lafayette Co., WI and later Monroe, Green County, WI where Daniel died between 1880 and 1883. He was a stone mason and also worked for the railroad.

I have a Daniel Boughton in my line and I thought he was born around 1823 in CT or bordering NY. I have no verification of that info except what census info from the 1860s federal census. He died in the 1870s in Gratiot, WI, Lafeyette Cty. He was a stonemason and his wife was Laura Malvina Bennett of PA. Does any of this match your info?

I am searching for information on the following people:
1) Daniel Boughton b. 1800-1810
2) Manly A Boughton b abt 1812
3) Sally Boughton Wood b 1800-1810
I am pretty sure they were all born around Caroline NY
These are the siblings of My 3rd Great Grandfather Jehiel Boughton b 1807 Caroline NY (used that spelling more in younger years than the Bouton). These children lost there parents as children and were taken care of by relatives. I do know their father is John Boughton (Bouton) Son of Jehiel & Lois Bouton.
Want to find their mothers name and any other information about them. Like when did they died

Dear Superior View:

Thanks for the information. I've found this thread very late in the game.

I agree with your reasoning. I have a question. The information I have lists 5 John Boutons: all father and sons. I believe that some of the research that has been done has been confused regarding wives and children. Do you have a line that you have proven?

Hi,

I agree with Julie here. I have the first John's wife Alice as Alice Kellogg. My only exception is "Joseph Crampton was the son of John Crampton and Sarah Rockwell" per Julie, but I have John Crampton's wife as Hannah Andrews. If that is wrong I would love the sources you have to correct that mistake.

I descend through Patience & Caleb Lobdell via their daughter Lucy Lobdell who married Cornelius Van Ness in 1794 in Hamburg, Erie Co, NY.

Lucy Lobdell & Cornelius Van Ness
Jerusha Van Ness & Elanson Ward (both d. in WI after moving there in 1846)
Susan Ward & William O. Rice
Arthur W. Rice & Augusta M. Flick
William Arthur Rice & Ella M. Sheff
Gordon J. Rice, Sr. & Anna L Bagrowski
my parents still living
Me - Sherrie Rice Smith

I would share what info I have (grave pictures, documents, censuses, etc.) with anyone interested in any of these lines. I also own a copy of Julia Harrison Lobdell 1907 Lobdell book, too.

Email me @ corlissbss@aol.com

Oh, I forgot the wives of the Johns. In a nutshell, this is what I believe is the currently agreed-on pedigree:

John Bouton-1 (b. 1605, England) m. Alice (~1610)
John Bouton-2 (1636, Hartford CT) m. Abigail Marvin (~1637)
John Bouton-3 (1659, Norwalk CT) m. Mary Hayes
John Bouton-4 (1684) m. Mercy Hickok (1689)
Ebenezer (~1714 Canaan Parish) m. Abigail Crampton (1719)
Patience (1756 South Salem NY) m. Caleb Lobdell (1748)

Nan,
Patience and Timothy were two of nine children that I know of. Their parents were Ebenezer Bouton and Abigail Crampton. Assuming my info. is correct, and I think it's pretty accurate, Abigail was dau. of Joseph Crampton and Patience Canfield, dau. of Ebenezer Canfield. Joseph Crampton was the son of John Crampton and Sarah Rockwell. Sarah was the dau. of John Rockwell and Elizabeth Weed.

Ebenezer Bouton came from 4 Johns. That is, his father was John Bouton and the 3 fathers before him were John Boutons. We come from all the Johns! The bit about Jachin has been disproven (although there WAS a Jachin) and all of the current genealogy I've seen agrees with that. I have a little Lobdell info. too, in case you don't.

I'll be glad to share more on this. Just email me at jgibsonjgibson@yahoo.com.

Julie

Yes, I am still a little confused, I have been working long hours also so I haven't had time to get back to it Right now I have Jachin Bouton, and Mary white as The parents of Ebenezer Bouton. I just left it that way until I can get back to it. I work for a resort, and we are in the middle of our season, and it will be May or so before I can get back to my research. I would sure appreciate any help that you can give.

Nan Curtis
