I'm looking for Catalano/Bova family members frm Calabria. More specifically:

Looking for children of Domenico and Domenica Catalano, siblings of Josephine Catalano (Giuseppa/Giuseppina) born in San Roberto, Calabria. NEW CASTLE, PA. – Mary Bova, 100, formerly of Covet Road, died Thursday, Jan. 10, 2013, at Golden Hill Nursing Home in New Castle.

She was born Dec. 24, 1912, in New Castle, Pennsylvania a daughter of the late Pasquale and Giovanna (Chirumbolo) Miscimarra.

She was married to the late Louis Bova who died April 21, 1994.

Mrs. Bova enjoyed cooking and baking and spending time with family.

She is survived by one son, Louis Bova of Niwot, Colo.; two daughters, Mary Ann Jannetti of New Castle and Joanne Carrigan of Sharon, Pa.; six grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandson.

She was preceded in death by her brother, Anthony Miscimarra; her brother, Fred Miscimarra; her sister, Catherine Malizia; her sister, Angeline Fraser; her sister, Anna Moses; and her sister, Thomasina Pacella.

A private blessing service will be held at the William F. & Roger M. DeCarbo Funeral Home, 926 Cunningham Ave.

Burial will be at St. Vitus Cemetery.

Thanks for the info. I don't think the dates for the two Orazio Gerace/i s are quite matching up, but I really do appreciate the info. Orazio Gerace, my g-grandfather had 6 children, most of them born in the 1910s-1920s in Toronto or Oshawa, Ontario.

Hi,

I have Bova and Geraci in my family tree but they all come from Termini Imerese. I checked the database of Termini Imerese and the only Orazio Geraci I could find was the father of Giovanni Geraci. Giovanni married Provvidenza Gentile in 1891 in Termini Imerese. This Geraci family came from Montemaggiore, Sicily. Seeing that Orazio is not a very common name (in Termini Imerese) I think it might be possible that your Geraci and Bova relatives come from Montemaggiore.

Anna Gerace (nee Bova) / Francesco Bova

Hi,

I'm looking for information on my g-g-grandmother, Anna Bova. She was likely born before 1867, married Giuseppe Gerace and had at least two children, Orazio (Charles; born 1887), and Francesco (Frank; born 1892).

Orazio arrived in New Orleans in 1907 aboard the Il Piemonte along with Francesco Bova (b. 1850), Antonia Bova (b. 1892) and Guiseppa Bova (b. 1904). Anna and Giuseppe were also living in New Orleans in 1907.

I know that Orazio and brother Frank later settled in Oshawa, Ontario, Canada, but I know very little about their parents and where they were after 1907. It is possible the parents may have also resided in Chicago?

Any info or insight would be appreciated.

My wife's grand father Guiseppe Bova. He was born about 1870, and immigrated to the US in the late 1880s to work on the railroad out in the western US. From about 1912 on he moved to Brooklyn, after returning to Calabria to marry his wife. He lived in Brooklyn until about 1974. He had a large family of about 8. My wife would love any information you might have on him.

Dorothy was born on August 20, 1935 in Laona, NY, the daughter of the late Ross Sr. and Louise (LaDuca) Conti.

A graduate of Fredonia High School and the Rochester Business Institute, where she earned her degree in Medical Office Management, Dorothy accepted a position with the Yosemite National Park as a Reservations Agent. After three years there, Dorothy accepted a position as Reservations Agent for Airline giant TWA in New York City. However, she advanced rapidly and became an Operations Agent with TWA in Kansas City, MO, where she worked and visited over 45 countries during her tenure; specifically Pakistan, Afghanistan, Greece and Italy. After her 26 years with the Airline, Dorothy returned home to Western New York to be near her family.

She enjoyed scrapbooking, picture taking, traveling and sports of all kinds, especially hockey and football. She was an avid reader and enjoyed the great outdoors. She was adamant about preserving the National Forests as a member of the Sierra Club. Proud of her heritage, Dorothy had been a former Board member of the Chautauqua Italian American Organization, (CIAO). Active in her Religion, Dorothy was a Eucharistic Minister and a member of St. Dominic Roman Catholic Church and the Altar and Rosary Society.

She is survived by her children, Rebecca J. Bremer and her husband Kevin of Gardners, PA; and Russell A. Rusty Bova and his wife Suzanne of Westfield, NY and by her two sisters: Martha Smith of Chelas, WA, and Annette (Vincent) DeCosta of Fredonia, NY and by her two brothers, Ross (Elaine) Conti, Jr. of Fredonia, NY, and Sam (Patricia) Conti of Fredonia.

Dorothy was the proud grandmother of Jennifer and Michael Bova and Laura and Conor Bremer. She is further survived by her two Sisters in Law, Hazel Conti and Marian Conti both of Fredonia, NY.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Angelo J, Bova, her 2 brothers, Dr. Louis Conti, and John Conti, her sister and brother in law Nina and Carl Cash, her brother in law, Jack Smith, and her sister in law, Gerry Conti.

Friends may call on Thursday, December 8, 2011, from 2-4 and 6-8 PM at the MASON Funeral Home, 37 Clinton Street, Westfield, NY, and are invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial to be celebrated on Friday morning at 11 AM at St. Dominic Roman Catholic Church, Central Avenue, Brocton, NY with Father Marius J. I am interested in the Bova name in Syracuse. I found this note I made a few years ago while researching Samuel Bergam, cousin to Annunziata Cosentino in Oswego, "When Sam came to America his guardian was a woman called Marina Bova. She was bringing him to Syracuse and her husband, Vincenzo."
The Cosentinos and Bergams were from Termini Imerese. Sam was a small child, so this was probably in the early 1900s, about the time your Giovanni lived in Syracuse. Perhaps Giovanni had a brother or a cousin named Vincent? Any ideas on this? Do you have information on any other Bovas in Syracuse?

I only have a little information. My greatgrandmother Anna was from Reggio - Her mother was Francesca Bovi (Bova). Anna was born 1882 and then moved to the states after she married Natale Rosa. I'm not 100% but I belive Francesca's husband was Antonio Spanti?.

I probably can jumpstart your research. All data from membership in www.termini-imerese.org.
According to LDS 2014204 #487 (microfilm) Maria Bova was born to Antonino Bova & Maria Filicicchia 9/15/1893 in Termini (informant Rosa Roca, Age 63).
According to LDS 2014482 # 86 (marriage of Antonino Bova to Maria Filicicchia 3/30/1881) the parents of Antonino Bova were Michele Bova and Ignazia Ardizzone-Caito. The parents of Maria Filicicchia were Giuseppe Filicicchia and Maria LaRoca. (the informant of Maria's birth was almost certainly someone from the Mothers Roca/LaRoca family).

Giovani b.1/22/1882
Anna b.11/29/1884 d.12/23/1884
Michele b.2/1/1887
Ignazia b.8/30/1889
There is some confusion in the recording and correcting the death of Antonino Bova, but it seems he died 7/8/1901 in Termini.

Anyone really wanting to research this family needs to join www.termini-imerese.org and use the database and it is highly likely you can get back to the early 1800's or late 1700's in most lines.

Census records indicate three different years of immigration. 1888, 1889, and 1890! I am having trouble finding immigration records for them and any records from where I believe they are from. (Termini-Imerese) Any hints or information on this would be great! Thanks.

My husband, Steven Bova is the oldest grandchild of your uncle Phil. I see that you offered to share some pictures of your grandfather. Would you mind sendung a copy to me? My husband would love to have a copy of him. Although I am the one that really enjoys searching the family lines, he enjoys seeing the results.

We live in Northern California. Steve is the oldest of 4 Bova siblings. Paul also lives here in N. CA, Vincent, and Laura live in San Diego. Vincent has posted some messages here, as well as his daughter, Gina.

You may know the other Bovas in N, CA. The daughters of Phil & Pauline Bova. Phil is the younger son of your Uncle Phil.

I would like to trade information or theories regarding the Bova line. By the way, my husband also grew up with the story the last name was originally BovaConti.

Are you sure your great grandmother is my grandfather Bruno's sister? Do you have documentation? How far back have you gotten in your research? I hit a wall and haven't gotten past my Grandfather Bruno's parents, Vito Andreacchi and Victoria Ierulli. I would appreciate any information you may have.
Johnson is a good name and half Italian is still very good.

My great grandmother was Rosa Maria Andreacchi. I guess that makes us distant cousins. Rosa's daughter,my grandmother, Maria Concetta married my granfather Felice Barbieri, also from Simbario. Felice and Maria lived in Ishpeming, MI and had my mother, Catherine Barbieri who married my father, Robert Johnson. And I am Jim Johnson. Not much of an Italian name I know but I guess half is still good.

Researching for my son & ex-hubby. My former fil passed away several years ago, his name was Phillip H. Bova. I had heard that his father was also Phillip and was a sheriff or some type of law enforcement/politic/government type in Ohio. We had also heard that the g-father or gg-father of the fil was from Palermo. I know that my fil had siblings, but also that he had been disowned, so I am really at a loss as to how to find anything?

The data I gave you is what I found in the Termini Imerese database (www.termini-imerese.org) You need to pay a fee in order to be able to research the database. It's 50 bucks for a year but if your ancestors are from Termini Imerese it's the best 50 bucks ever spent, lol.

I am surprised by the children you have listed. I found the Bova family arriving into Boston Apr 8, 1914 with children, Agostino, Antonino,Guissepe, and Antonina. No Rosa, Domenico or Salvadore.

I found Biagio Bova (son of Domenico Bova and Rosa Mercurio) getting married to Caterina Longo ( daughter of Antonino Longo and Antonina Conti) on Sep 19, 1882.
I found the following children:
Rosa (born Jun 1, 1883)
Antonina (born Oct 16, 1885, died Sep 11, 1886)
Domenico 9born Jun 22, 1887)
Salvadore (born Apr 13, 1898)

I have read somewhere on the internet that John signed up for the army, but when he received his $25 signing bonus, he took off for Canada. It said he later sent a letter to the army and said he would return if they sent the money for a train ticket. The army didn't respond. I don't know how true this is.

Mattie Bova is actually Martha "Mattie" Gervais/Jarvis who married Jean Baptiste Beauvais/Bova. She was born 13 May 1882 in Malone,Franklin Co.,NY. and died 27 Aug 1970 in Worcester,MA. She was the daughter of Gustave Gervais (Gustave was born 1856 Canada and died 5 Apr 1931 in Worcester,MA) and Melissa Felicitie Bourcier (also known as Felicitie). (Melissa Felicitie was born May or June 1858 in Canada and died 17 May 1888 in Malone,NY. She died of tuberculosis and complications from childbirth. Her baby Joseph died later that same day and was buried with his mother.
Mattie's sister, Belle Walsh was born Mary Olive Gervais, but called Belle.
Eliza Facette/Fassett Degon was not their mother, but was their stepmother. Eliza was the daughter of Gabriel Facette/Fassett and Louise Lamarque. Eliza first married John Degon and then married Gustave Gervais on 27 Jan 1896 in Worcester,MA.

I am researching the maternal grandparents of my partner Anthony Mocca and have come to a dead end. Catherine Bova married Michele Scarpaci in Termini Imerese and immigrated on April, 12 in 1899 with her two sons Francesco and Filippo Scarpaci. On board the ship was another Bova from Termini Imerese namely Filippo (age 27 and sailor). She was headed for Lawrence, MA to join her husband Michele Scarpaci, he was headed for his brother-in-law Guiseppe Russo in Chicago. Could Catherine B. and Filippo B. be related?
Any information on the Bova family is welcome as I have no names of relatives of Catherine Bova so far. Thank you.

Mary, My grandfather was Demetrio Bova. His parents were Domenica and Giovanni Bova. He was born in Calabria, province of Reggio in late 1800. Demetrio married Philomena Aquino in the United States. She had 2 girls from the first husband and 4 sons with Demetrio. My father John, Joe, Frank and Charles.

My grandfather, b. Jul 13 in Termini-Imerese, Sicily. His father: Fillipo Bova Mother: Guiseppina LaMantia. Came to America out of Palermo at age 13, in 1888 into New York. Settled in St. Louis, MO. Married Antonina Bova (not related) b. Aug 1, 1885 . Her Father: Guiseppe Bova Mother: Antonina Spicuzza. They had 7 living children: Phillip, Guiseppina (Josie), Angelina, Joseph, Anthony, Antonina, Padua (my mother). All children born in St. Louis, MO except Anthony, born in Youngstown, OH.

I remember Aunt Babe well.......and Aunt Nina too. I always enjoyed when they came to visit. We should have all gotten together more often.

How are the girls?? I remember swimming with them at Grandma's house when she lived in the apartments.

I just went out yesterday and put a wreath on dad and mom's gravesite. I need to get to the Catholic Cemetary one of these days soon.

I have been (VERY slowly) working on the Pusateri's and Bolenbaucher's genealogy. I just haven't had as much time to work as i would like.
