Re: Locinda Bovay Wanamaker

Hello.
My gg-grandmother was Margaret Jane Bovay, born in 1831 in Hallowell, Prince Edward Township, Ontario. She has a brother, John R. Bovay, born 1840, who married Mary Jane Wanamaker in 1861. They have another brother, William Bovay, born 1833 in P.E. Township, who married Sarah Wanamaker in 1870. It looks like your Locinda may be another sibling, who married another Wanamaker.
These sibling marriages seemed to happen frequently.
Three children of Margaret Jane Bovay and her husband Sidney Reynolds married three siblings named Neal, so there are three Reynolds-Neal marriages in that generation. Looks now like the generation immediately above has multiple Bovay-Wanamaker marriages too.
Margaret Jane Bovay's father is John Bovay, born 16 Sep 1792 in England. He died 28 Nov 1886 in Hallowell, PE Township, Ontario. Nothing further back on him yet.
There's a bit of mystery around the mother however. The earliest sources say "Lea Fremont," but I believe this comes from a single IGI file from the Latter Day Saint folks. I believe they got "Lea Fremont" from an error in reading the death certificate of John R. Bovay, which lists his mother as "Lena Vanwart." The handwriting is difficult to read, and the "n" in Lena is almost faded out, looking like "Le a" with "Vanwart" transcribed as either Fremont or Fermont. The last census before Bovay's death shows a lodger, Isaac Vanwart, living with him. Given the census showing Vanwart, and JR Bovay's own death certificate listing "Lena Vanwart" as mother, it seems to me that "Lea Fremont" is a red herring, and the true name is Vanwart.
I've shared this information with one other descendant of this family who agrees with me about the transcription, but there are still a lot of unknowns.
The Vanwarts seem to center around Tarrytown and Sleepy Hollow, NY, before moving to New Brunswick as Empire Loyalists. It appears though, that at least one branch of the Vanwart family settled in Ontario, but that Vanwart patriarch from Ontario is still to be discovered.
The informant on the death certificate is the widow, who lists England as the birthplace of Lena Vanwart. I believe this may be an incorrect assumption, since John Bovay was from England. Lena Vanwart must have died prior to 1842, since John Bovay married Minerva Blake in that year. That marriage is better documented than his first marriage, along with their offspring.
I would be very grateful for any information that might help unravel this family.
--John Greenhow

Thank you for message. Yes it is a shame that the children did not know about their mother's information. Since posting the query I did learn that Margaret Jane's mother was Lea Fremont; however, the last year and half I have not done much research since going back to school. I hope to back at the research tools next spring. Any new information is always welcome. By the way John Bovay is my g-g-g-g grandfather. My Reynolds line follows through Sidney and Margaret's son Charles Wesley.

Jewell Herby

Re: John Bovay 1792

Hello,
My tree shows John Bovay, born 16 Sep 1792 in England; moving to Canada in 1823; marrying Lea Fremont (no date yet); having at least two children with her, Margaret Jane Bovay (10 May 1831 - 18 Jun 1915) and John Bovay Jr. (born 1840 - died ?); Lea Fremont dies before 1842, because John Bovay marries Minerva Blake in 1842. He dies in 28 Nov 1886 in Ameliasburg, Ontario. (I believe the name Lea Fremont came originally through the Mormons, but I can't seem to put my hands on the citation--it figures--because that's the most important part!)
JB is my g-g-g-grandfather. Margaret Jane Bovay and her husband, Sidney John Reynolds are my g-g-grandparents (my mother's father's mother's parents). They had 10 children, of whom my g-grandmother (V. Caroline Reynolds) was the youngest.
Strangely, among these 10 children, there's a great deal of confusion about their mother's maiden name. Here's a comment I placed in my record for Margaret--
"Margaret Jane Bovay Reynolds' son John Henry Reynolds' marriage certificate lists mother as Jane Boone. Son John Henry Reynolds' death certificate lists mother as Jennie Bovie (informant was brother William). Son Sidney Lewis Reynolds' death certificate lists mother as Sarah Bovay (informant was Mary Reynolds, widow). Son George Willard Reynolds' death certificate lists mother as Margaret Jane Bouva (informant was Sam Reynolds, brother). Son Charles W. Reynolds' death certificate lists mother as Margaret Jane (no last name--informant was Bertha Reynolds, wife of deceased). Daughter Victoria Caroline Reynolds (Hoover)'s death certificate lists mother as Jane Boone (informant was doctor). Her own death certificate (Margaret Jane Reynolds), lists her maiden name as Bovay (informant was son Charles). Her father's records display as John Bovay. Difficult to imagine how a woman can have ten children over the course of 24 years, and these children know so little about their mother's name."
Anyway, that's probably more information than you need, but it's what I have currently. I'll continue to look for the original reference I have to Lea Fremont, and post it when I find it. Thanks.
--John Greenhow

George Bovay

I'm looking for any information on a "George Bovay".

All I know about him is:
--- He had a partner named Olive Kingsbury (I'm unsure if they were married or not).
--- Olive gave birth to a son named, Joseph Charles Bovay on 6 July 1923, in North Bay, Ontario, Canada.
--- George & Olive's son was given to Henrietta and Charles Charpentier from Callender, Ontario. And some time during George's son's childhood he assumed the name "Charles Carpenter".

George may have also lived in Bonfield or Rutherglen Ontario, at some point.

Any help anyone can provide would be greatly appreciated. I've been looking, but with no luck. It seems he never exsisted.

Here's the information I have about John and Minerva: "John was born in England 16 Sept. 1792. He married Minerva blake circa 1842. At 59 years of age John became the father of George Francis Bovay in Huffs Island, Ontario, Canada, 28 Nov. 1851. John died 28 Nov. 1886 at 94 years of age. Minerva [Blake] was born in Prince Edward Co., Ontario, Canada, 23 April 1824. She married John Bovay circa 1842. At 27 years of age Minerva became the mother of George Francis Bovay in Huffs Island, Ontario, Canada, 28 Nov. 1851. Minerva died 9 Aug. 1909 in Chipewa Lake, MI at 85 years of age. Her body was interred at Chippewa Lake, MI"

Given this information it seems likely that there was a previous marriage but I can't document it. The above is an exact quotation of my family's record composed in the early 20th or late 19th century by my late grandfather. Since my lineage traces through Minerva, I don't think much attention was given to whom else John may have married. Sorry. Also, apparently there was no attempt to trace the line back any further than John, none of the records of any members of my family go back further than the first generation of settlers. Attaining European records was apparently too difficult. My grandmother tends to think John may have been from Devonshire, but this cannot be said with any certainty.

I too have John's death date of 28 Nov 1886 in Ameliasburgh, Prince Edward, Ontario, Canada.
I have a family reaserch book that lists John having a daughter Margaret Jane born abt. 1830 in P.E. Ont, Canada. According to the 1911 Canadian Census she was born Nov 1829. If your records for Minerva Blake are confirmed than she cannot be Margaret's mother. Do you have any records perhaps on a previos marriage? I have not been able to locate any records in England yet for John Bovay. Do you know perhaps his parents names?
The info I have on Margaret is she marries Sidney Reynolds around 1860 and they have 12 children. Sidney dies bef 1911 and Margaret Died 18 Jan 1915 in Huntingdon, Hastings, Ontario, Canada.

I found mention of him in my family tree and accompanying histories. I'm still doing research; all I can tell you now is that he died aged 94 years on 28 Nov 1886. At one point I believe (documents are a little unclear) he was married to Minerva Blake, who was born 23 Apr 1824 in Prince Edward Co., Ontario, and died 9 Aug 1909 In Chippewa Lake, Michigan, United States. Hope this helps. I have information on only one of his children: George Francis Bovay.
