Re: The Bovey Family--Solomon, Lemuel, Lester

I am looking for more current information, as I am doing research on the family that farmed the place I live now. One of Adam Bovey's sons, Solomon R. (b:2/8/1839 d: 1914) married Sarah B. Harnish on 10/18/1865. 1 of their 8 children, Lemuel E (b:5/1879 d:?) married Annie M. Peiffer before 1904. They had 3 children, Lester Franklin Bovey, being the last of that line, and the last of the family to live in my home. That is where the trail ends with Lemuel, and I can't find out what happened to him. I know that Annie came to live with her parents (in my house) and brought her children. Hope this helps, and would love to hear if anyone has other information. Again, this is what I have gotten from others' research.

I actually found Edouard Bauvais' baptism record on pilot.familysearch.org in the Quebec Catholic Parish Registers for Saint-Mathias Parish, 1818-1825, Image #36 of #237. It lists his date of baptism as 15 May 1819, parents are Francois Bauvais and Isabel Ponton. His godfather is Pierre Bauvais and his godmother is Marie Ponton.

I am related through Edouard's son Peter. Unfortunately I have not been able to find Peter's baptism record yet. I believe he might have been born in Montreal and not Saint-Mathias but I have no proof yet. The search continues...

Shannon Hayes
Anchorage, AK
I'm afraid I can't help you. I know that "my" Christian Bovey's name was written that way in the 1790 census. I can share your frustration at what looks like a connection, but I've never seen a reference to Bonge -- though I know misspellings and name changes were common. Good luck! It's interesting reading all that you know about your family.

I wish I could for certain connect the Michael Bonge who was married in the same York Church 20 years before my ggg grandfather Frederick Bonge married Catharine Wilt in 1799. As you know in the later records Michael is listed as Bovey. From the time I was a child (80 years ago) I was told by Bongey grandparents that our ancestor was a french huguenot . This has been verified by Fredericks children including my gg grandfather listing in census records that Frederick was born in France. In 1798 Bonge's from France went to the telemark region of Norway coming later to the US. Frederick's naturalized in 1803 states in PA records that he had owed allegience to the Duke of Courland. There are Bonge families in Germany today who tell the same story of their ancestors coming to Germany from France.A
Gottfried Bonge (De Marce mercenary troops from Anhalt-Zerbst, Germany)-was naturalized in Quebec 1778 _.
I have wondered if the York Church record of Michael's marriage misspelled his name and he was a Bovey and not a Bonge at all. My gg grandfather Jacob added a y to our Bonge name presumably so it would be pronounced correctly. I have proof that Frederick Bonge could read and write so since he signed his name Bonge I am reasonably certain of that correct family name. Please add your thoughts on this.

Christian Bovey was my ggggrandfather and I would greatly appreciate any information you have on the Bovey family. (I have two different names for Christian's wife and wonder which is correct.) I descend from Adam I, then Elizabeth Bovey (m. Snowden Scott), then Floyd Clyde Scott.

Snowden was married to Elizabeth Bovey and her brother Noah married Snowden's niece. The branches on my tree get a bit crossed there.

I'm grateful for any information, and will share if I have any of interest to someone.

Thanks!
Jan (Scott) Stoltenberg
j.stoltenberg@mchsi.com

Hello,
I just noticed your question from years ago and wonder if you are still researching Adam Bovey. He is my great-grandfather through his daughter Eliazbeth. I have a 91-year-old aunt who is Adam's granddaughter and she says the middle initial should be "I" and it doesn't stand for anything. We were cleaning out my aunt's house last year and found some of Adam's books. He wrote his name in them -- mostly religious books in German. I hope you're still out there and we can correspond.
j.stoltenberg@mchsi.com

Is there any connection with Bovey to a Gottfried Bonge who was naturalized in Quebeck Canada in 1778. he served with a mercenary troop with British forces during the American Revolution. Thank you so much .Do you know when Michael Bovey/Bonge was naturalized? Elaine Wendt

Hi Jim
Thank you for writing. My Mary Ann Bovey was born Dec 21 1951 in Newfoundland. Her mother was Anna or Hannah Whitten who was first married to a Bovey, than married Anthony McKeand. Anna or Hannah was also born in Newrfoundland. Her first husband may have been John Bovey. Is there anything in the family bible that covers that area?

My wife is in possession of a very old bible that likely began as a Bovey bible before it transitioned to a Brimmicombe bible because some of the early entries were Bovey births.
There is no mention however of the father and mother of the apparent parents of these children. Can anyone tell me who the parents of these children were?
Mary A (possibly Mary A W) Bovey, b 16th Sep 1854
Andrew W Bovey, b 9th Feb 1858
Sarah A Bovey, b 13th Jan 1861
Jane Bovey, b 14th July 1863
Joseph Bovey, b 11th Nov 1865

I suspect these were all brothers and sisters since the birthdates were so close together.
The baptism dates are recorded as well.
Any ideas on mother and father's names?

Please respond to bancline@aol.com
Jim Pate
U.S.
My wife is from Devon and is in possession of a very old bible that is originally most likely a Bovey bible that is also in her family tree.
There is an entry for a Mary A Bovey born 16th of September in 1854. She was also baptized the 10th of October 1854.
The entry is in a beautiful handwritten script and the full name looks as though is could be Mary A W Bovey, or it could be something else. I believe it to be Mary A W Bovey, because there is another entry for an Andrew W. Bovey.

I hope this helps someway.
Regards,
Jim Pate

What is the connection between Bovey and Bonge. Michael Bonge married Barbara Rauhauser in York, York PA in 1779. How did he become Bovey? Also how do you know he had a brother Jacob? I am looking for the connection between Michael Bonge and my ggg grandfather Frederick Bonge married in York 20 years later. Frederick named a son Jacob.
Many Rauhauser's are buried in Quickel's Church yard where my ancestors are buried.. My Frederick was born in France according to family but when he was naturalized in 1803 he gave up allegience to the Duke of Courland. I have a lot of Bonge information but none were named Bovey Elaine Wendt

The only child I have of John Bovey is my gggrandmother Margaret Ann Bovey (also seen as Bouvey from her daughter Jane Margaret or Margaret Jane Aide who married John Quinn). I know she died at either 82 or 84 in a nursing home on New Brunswick which is where her son was living at the time. Based upon this date she was born about 1829-1831. Do not know where she was born as I find Ireland, England and Newfoundland from various records. In 1900 she was living with her daughter Jane Quinn in Boston (according to 1900 census) but Jane died in Boston January 1902.
The following is what I have found in Newfoundland for John Bovey. I am sure we are connected but that is all I have. Thanks and let me know if you have anything else. Bob Quinn
John Bovey is listed as a carpenter in the St Johns Hutchinson directory 1864-1865

Avalon South Region ~ St. John's District
List of Grand and Special Jurors in St John’s in 1833

St. John’s
1833
A list of the Names of
Prominent People in the Time
Newfoundland was Granted
Representative Government
A Project of the Provincial Archives
971.8/P94/NR/Vault

“We reprint here a copy of the alphabetical list of Grand and Special Jurors in St John’s in 1833. In his obituary, Adam's middle initial is "J"; however, I have also found it as "I". Does anyone know what his middle name is? Adam I. and Adam J. are the same person, both listed as married to Elizabeth Rinehart on 13 MAR 1820 in Washington, Maryland. My address is 6929 196th ST SW, Lynnwood, WA 98036. E-MAIL: vmrenfro@yahoo>com. ANY Bovey info is most welcomed!

Edward (Edouard) Bovey (Beauvais)

Can anyone tell me if the Edward Bovey on the 1860 Illinois census in Carroll County is possibly the Edouard Beauvais I have found on several websites listed as one of the children of Francois and Elizabeth (Ponton) Beauvais? For some reason he does not appear on all the lists. It appears to me that he might be, since living 20 households away on the same census are Frances and Elizabeth 'Bover', living with Adeline and Adolph, names of two of their youngest children. The 1860 census lists one of the children as Paul, who I think may be my great grandfather. Paul was listed as 4 in 1860 and I think he is also the 'Paul Bouva', age 25 on the 1880 census for Carroll County. I haave also found Paul Bouvia on the Illinois marriage index in Whiteside County in 1881. I believe that the 'Paul Vonva' listed on the 1870 census for Jo Daviess county census is also my Paul Bouvia, since also living in Rush, Jo Daviess county is Edward and Elizabeth 'Bowraes' (Bouvais) along with Frank and another name that is not legible. Does anyone have any information that might help me confirm these connections?? I would appreciate any input you can give me! Debbie

I was thrilled to get your reply to my message! I had emailed you almost a year ago about Paul Bouvia, my great grandfather, and you had sent me a copy of the 1860 census showing Paul as one of Edward's children. In researching census and other records I am quite positive that my Paul is the one in this family. I have found records for him through 1930 and I have a copy of his marriage certificate from Whiteside County in 1881. He married a Mary Martin from Whiteside County, parents Patrick and Bridget Martin. I would love to see what records you have on this Beauvais family and would share any I have with you. Do you know if there is a Duffy Bouvia anywhere? Paul was a barber and in an 1887 Directory for Clinton County, Iowa Paul is listed as having a boarder named Duffy Bouvia, also a barber. I know that after Paul married in 1881 he lived in Iowa until about 1900, as 5 of his 6 children were born in Iowa.

Hi

I am a Bovey, now a Woodgate. My Grandfather was William Bovey married to Florrie Millington in the Chudleighknighton area of Devon. There are three remaining children left in Newton Abbot and Teignmouth. I was born in Teignmouth in 1946 and moved to Exmouth at age 4. My Father was Charles Joseph but unfortunately passed away this year aged 89. Love to hear from you.

Are you familiar with any of theses people? Adrian was born Dec 2 1944, so he would a year older than me if still living. If you would like to contact me off site my E-mail address is hspalmer@nb.sympatico.ca
Sandra
