Hi Megan,
I am a Bowbeer, Tom is my name and I am a semi-retired forester in Northumberland UK. My Father was Thomas Aisbitt Bowbeer married to Helen (maiden name Pringle). His father was George ( Boilermaker and industrial blacksmith) and his mother was Margeret (maiden name Hunter Aisbitt). My Father had a younger brother Fred and a younger sister Sheila. My parents, uncles and aunts are unfortunately no longer with us but my wife Cathryn and I have two sons and so far two grandsons so the Bowbeer line lives on, along with the male children of my cousin John (son of Fred) who is a Doctor in Ayresire in Scotland.

I don't have a detailed history of the family but would be pleased to help you with any information that you may think is useful.

Regards and Best Wishes,

Tom Bowbeer

Hello Alison, I think you are doing quite well with your computer skills and the internet.
I will be gathering the information I will be sending to you within the next few days. I will need to update some of the information. Could you please tell me your mothers married name and if you have any siblings (I know you told me that she died very young), and your married names (is Eliason your last husbands name) and if you have any children, etc. I have a family tree and additional papers that you might find interesting. I will mail it to your Sacramento address. I live in Foster City, south of S.F.
I look forward to how your visit goes with Maurice, we call him Uncle Pat.

Sandy

SandyMoore253 - Thanks (very much) Sandy - as you know, he has telephoned me. Next week he will attempt to visit me in Sacramento. (Where do you live?) I no longer drive (old age has caught up with me) His info., as well as yours, seems to prove your thoughts that I really do have a family. Sandy, you have my sympathy at the loss of your husband - I have lost two husbands to cancer. It does take some time to accept this - but, never to forget them. Yes, please send me the data that you have mentioned - I would appreciate having this part of the family. Also, thanks for telling me that "he is a wonderful man" Meeting him as a stranger is a bit uncomfortable. Even though we don't know each other, you make me feel trusting. My E mail address is Alisoneliason@Gmail.com. Must confess that computers are not friendly with this old gal. Let me know what is the best way for you to give me your data. Thanks, again - Sincerely, Alison

Hi Alison, so sorry to has taken so long to respond.

Yes, this is indeed your family. I am no relation, my husband was Mabel Bowbeer's grandson. He has since passed away of a sudden heart attack at home, last May. I was doing geneaology for his family. Just to give you a little information, if you didn't have the data. I have a family tree on the Bowbeers, back to 1623, your 6th great-grandfather was Thomas Bowbeer, of England. Your great grandmother was Sarah Beeson, she married a John H. Overton. Sarah is buried in Petaluma at Cypress Hill Memorial Park. My husband and I had visited her gravesite trying to find more relatives. It's been over a year or more since I have done this research, so it is a little foggy in my mind. I would be more than happy to send you the information that I have.
Could you please tell me about your Mom, Alice V., who did she marry? Were you married, your married name and do you have children?

I am going to put you in touch with your 1st cousin, Maurice Overton Shaw, born in 1922, he lives in Santa Rosa. His mother was Mabel Bowbeer Shaw.
I am forwarding your phone number to him.
Looking forward to hearing back from you.
A nice surprise hearing from you. Yes, this is my family. Sorry that I don't know of a Gale - possibly the son of Martston. Information that I have is limited. The facts that I know are: Benjamin and Mary Bowbeer were not born in Sonoma. A few years ago I checked the Library in Petaluma, CA - they had a large record book with the name of Bowbeer - I knew some of the children my mother (Alice Vivienne) died when I was 4 years old. Marston was the last of their children (he was my uncle - despite the age difference - as I was born in Sept.1916. We played together - for a short while.) The time was right for Gale to be Marston's son. We - all - had lost touch with each other through the years. I had known Mabel and Virginia - but, can't remember the others. I did return some time later to the Library in Petaluma - but, they were not able to locate that paticular register. Years ago, I visited the Public Library in Oakland - the only reference I could find was for Benjamin Bowbeer as an officer with the Amalgamated Transist Union in San Francisco, CA. Also, I knew he and his wife lived in Oakland, CA. Where do you live - it would be wonderful to have a visit. Sincerely, Alison 227 - 43rd St. Sacramento, CA 95819 (916/457-4297)

Hello Alison, good to hear from you regarding my search for a Mr. Gale Bowbeer. I'm somewhat confused, the information that I have shows Benjamin F. Bowbeer and Mary Overton born in Sonoma, had 6 children, Mabel, Clarence, Marston born in 1917, Alice V. born in 1894, William and a Virginia. Is this your family? Looking forward to hearing from you. Sandy

I goofed up a couple of dates there- so here is the quick summary
So it appears William Sr b. 1795 was in Trafalgar by 1818 for marriage and maybe went back & forth to the states? and he rented land on lot 15 (3369 Sixth Line) where he built a log cabin for his growing family, that totalled 11 children born between 1819 & 1843.
In March 1822 he purchased lot 10 and farmed it. (no house or family was listed in assessment as living there and no acres were cleared)
In 1835 he purchased lot 15 (3369 Sixth Line) where he had been renting as the owner of the land D’Arcy Boulton of Family Compact fame had died.
In 1840 he and William Somerset then age 23 finished building a frame, under 2 storey home on lot 10 with 12 acres cleared(S. Rampens home)(William was married Nov 1839)
In 1845 he built an under 2 storey frame addition to his log cabin
Sometime before 1855 he added bricks to the frame structure.
There are actually two original homes. The one on Burnhamthorpe is not the original homestead. There is a home on Sixth Line which is where they originally settled according to early assessment records. The information below is taken from assessment & land registry records.

Lot 15 Concession 1 NDS

This 200 acres was first owned by John Robinson of the family compact in Nov 1807. It is believed that he never lived on the land but used it as an investment.

In 1812 he sold 50 acres to Peter Dykman who sold the land to Daniel Munn in 1816.

Daniel Munn purchased an additional 50 acres on the north border of the first 50 acres and sold 100 acres to

Aurelia Jones in 1816 who sold to

D’Arcy Boulton in Dec 1818 – of the family compact and son in law of John Robinson. Based on the Trafalgar Assessment records D’arcy Boulton was leasing the land to Willliam Bowbeer by 1825 and at that time he had cleared 30 acres of the 100 acres of land. That would mean that he could have first settled on the land anywhere between 1819 and 1822. At this time his family included a wife and 3 children and they lived in a hand hewn log cabin. William purchased land at 1 NDS lot 10 and 1 NDS lot 15 in 1835 (Just after D’arcy’s death). The land at 1 lot 10 (S. Rampens home) is listed in assessment records as not being cleared and with no house on it until 1840. In 1840 on the assessment records the land at lot 10 is listed as William’s son’s William Somerset Bowbeer with a frame home under 2 stories and 10 acres cultivated.

In 1845 William Sr.s land is listed with an under 2 story frame home, but it is not listed as brick. So the log cabin was replaced or added to. It is believed that the earlier structure, a log cabin was attached to the back of the present day house and the brick house that stands today is the framed structure bricked over.

William Bowbeer sold to Robert & William L Bigger March 1855 when he moved to Townsend.
William Bowbeer was born 1795 in Somerset England and came to Canada in 1816, having first landed in the States in 1815. We know they were in Trafalgar by 1821 when Tamzin was born. William Bowbeer married Mevira Fish in Trafalgar in 1818 and had 11 children between 1819 & 1843. In 1851 they had a servant living with them.
I can't say I've looked much into my family tree, all I can say is it feels like my family is the only Bowbeer's in the country, I only have knoledge back to my Great Grandfther who was also a George Bowbeer, anyway, it's interesting to read the post. I'm going to dive into the black and white photo's I have, see how far they trace back. Wonder if i'm at all related to the American/Canadian Bowbeer's.

I'm male and 20 by the way :) First time I've tapped my name into search engine.
Where is Napanee? Send me your email address and I will give you the person's name and address. She has so much info, and would be able to help you in finding where you fit in. The first Bowbeers that came to Canada settled in Trafalger, which is know as Oakville today. It is just outside of Toronto. The original home from the early 1800's is still standing. Hope you can find out more by contacting this woman. Her name is Isabelle Finney.
My Grandparents were Thomas Murray Bowbeer and Sara Maude Hood Bowbeer.
There is a person who I keep in contact with who has been working on the family tree for many years now. Would you like to get in touch with her?
Thought it was time to do a new posting. Have obtained lots of wills that connect the Bowbeers in Somerset, England with the bible information which came from the original bible brought by William Bowbeer from England to Canada and the U. S. Wayne Mesecar has put up a Bowbeer site and Anne Bowbeer and I have been working on a Book of Descendants which will help get the information to others who are interested. There are still lots of details to find out but we are now also in touch with a Bowbeer descendant in the New Zealand/Australia corner of the world.

Please contact me directly at
jifjc@primus.ca
OR at
jif137@hotmail.com
OR by mail C/O Richard Finney, 33 St. Louis Road, Winnipeg, Manitoba, R2M 3J4, Canada.
Janet Isobelle Finney
Hi Megan. I am Donna Bowbeer and I live in Michigan. I have been doing a lot of family searching, and find it so interesting. I have even found the original Bowbeer homestead in Oakville, Ontario, Canada,. What a beautiful home. It was built in the early 1800's. Drop me a line if you want more information. dbowbeer@hotmail.com

I'm not a descendant of the Bowbeer family, but am a Ford descendant. I am looking for information on Norman G. Bowbeer who the Ford history has married to Ella Ford. Could he have been married more than once? Ella was Christina Ford's cousin. Christina was the daughter of William who was the son of Thomas Ford and 1st wife, Ella was the daughter of David Ford son of Thomas Ford and 3rd wife, Altha Sheppard. I think its probable that I have the right Bowbeer family, Norman was descended from Charles W. Bowbeer and Christina Ford.
Thanks,
Jeane

Hello Megan from a Bowbeer historian

Dear Megan,
Nice to hear from you. I have been doing Bowbeer history for about 20 years. I married a Bowbeer and have 2 girls: a 21 yr old and a 19 yr old. I have information from the Bowbeer family history bible which was dated about 1628 and listed the owners of the bible from generation to generation. I have been in touch with your grandfather in the past because I was gathering information to put in a computerized version of a list of descendants of Thomas Bowbeer who was born in the 1600's and was the first owner of the bible. Your grandfather is a descendant of William Bowbeer, son of Benjamin and Hannah (Masecar) Bowbeer. We are not trying to dig up personal information on people but rather, to compile full names, birth dates, marriage dates, where born and married, people's occupations and when and where died. Can you help us. Your grandfather helped a bit but did not give us the birthdays of his children, when and when and who they married. Would your parents mind you helping us by telling us when they were born, what their full names are, where they were born, when and where they got married, what their occupations are and about their children? A lady I know in the states has a geneology program on her computer and is doing the typing of the facts. When I find an interesting obituary that adds to the info I have her include it. Is your grandma ok? I think Wayne Messecar said she had to have knee surgery or something like that. I hope she is ok. I donot have my own computer and have to use the library's computer. My e-mail address is jif137@hotmail.com and I would be pleased to hear from you sometime. I was living in Ontario when I first contacted your grandfather but have moved to Manitoba which is the province in Canada where I was born. My mailing address is: C/O 33 St. Louis Road, Winnipeg, Manitoba, R2M 3J4
Bye and god bless.
Janet Isobelle Finney

Lynne-have a correction to your info for you

Lynne, after reading your original message again I see there needs to be a few corrections. The original homestead in Oakville was built by William Bowbeer who was born in England and came to Canada in about 1816, marrried Mevira "Mercy" Fish and had a large family. Their son: William Somerset Bowbeer took over the family farm with his wife, Mary Anderson. His parents moved to another farm in Townsend Township, Norfolk County, Ontario about 1855. William Somerset Bowbeer put an addition on the house while he lived there. He also had a large family but only 2 sons and 2 daughters lived to the age of 20. One son was George Bowbeer who was my husband's anscestor, the other son was Charles Bowbeer who is your anscestor. He went to Missouri and farmed for a time but eventually came back to Canada, living in the Toronto area. he also had a large family. God bless- Janet Isobelle Finney at C/O 33 St. Louis Road, Winnipeg, Manitoba,R2M 3J4. Canada jif137@hotmail.com

Yes Megan, I am the person who was at Marine Station Road. In the years since contacting your dad and grandpa I have been searching cencus records to try to find your grandpa's father's siblings. I did find lots of cencus info on Benjamin and Hannah who were your grandpa's grandparents. I have given it to Wayne Messecar who is trying to publish a Messecar family history book which includes your grandparents Bowbeer etc. We have been trying to get pictures for the book. I know people in Oakville, Ontario who have pictures of Ben and Hannah. I just got a picture of a lady who is your I don't know how many times great grandmother: Mevira Fish (Mrs. William Bowbeer) whose son was Benjamin, whose son was William S., whose son was Wayne(your grandpa), whose son is George. You figure out the greats. If you want a laser copy I would be happy to get you a copy and send itif you can let me know your mailing address (just in case there is anychange in it since I wrote your dad.) I am still hopeing to get pictures of Ben and Hannah and will pass on laser copies if you are interested.
Isobelle Finney
p.S read the other message I posted in reply to one of your emails

as you can see i too am a bowbeer, i do have some information in regards to history. the original homestead, farm is still standing in oakville, ontario having been built by william somerset bowbeer upon his arrival in canada. this was in the mid to late 1700's, there was a significant addition to the home in the early part of the 1800's by one of his sons. it is a beautiful, english style, brick farm house. the surrounding grounds are outstanding as well as the original outbuildings. the current owner is a lovely lady that most graciously opened the home to me and my sisters when we visited. she has lovingly done restoration work in keeping with the original architecture. there are many stories that she tells about this house including an interesting haunting by a daughter, druscilla that died in one of the upstairs bedrooms. i do have more info if interested.
