Bowditches in Hawkchurch,Dorset.

Hi,
I am researching the Bowditches from Hawkchurch in Dorset. I am descended from Benjamin Bowditch b. 1781 Hawkchurch and Hester Collier (Collyer) b. 1783 Hawkchurch. Children include Amelia b. 1821: she has an illegitimate son Alfred b. 1841 his father was William Ford. I don't know what happened to either of them.
I'd be grateful if anyone could throw some light on these ancestors.

I'm wondering if anyone has a access to a birth or christening record for John BOWDIDGE (also spelled BOWDIGE) born around 1794 in Whitchurch Canonicorum (or possibly Wootton Fitzpaine but less likely). Children of his and his wife Elizabeth (last name unknown) that I've been able to confirm are Stephen, Mary, John and William all born between 1823 and 1837.

Do you know that all Bowditchs stem from the same family. They originally lived at Bowditch Farm now in Devon, until the bounary changes, and previously the address was in Dorset England.The farm is still on the maps today. I plan to visit the area this year.My Grand father was called Walace Bowditch, from Lancashire, England.

Sorry for the corny subject line, but I am interested in connecting my line of Bowdishes to the other Bowditch clans and was hoping someone here might be able to help.

I am a descendant of William Bowdish who was born around 1620 in Devon, England. He came to America and was in Salem, MA from 1639 to sometime before the 1670s, when some land he owned in Newport Rhodes Island was passed to his son Nathaniel (1642/3-1706). William would have died prior to this land transfer in 1673.

William Bowdish married Sarah ? (abt 1622-bef 1673), who was famous for being admonished by the Salem Quarterly Court in 1646 for not baptizing one of their children. It is thought that this event led to them to eventually move to Newport RI where there was more religious tolerance.

Any help on connecting my Bowdish line to any Bowditches/Bowdishes in Devon would be appreciated.

Then Moved to Risca area of Monmouthshire 1860s/70s With his wife Elizabeth Beecham where he brought up 4 of his children. Thomas b1861 Harriet b1862 George b1864 and Hannah b1871 all born in the Risca area.He moved to the Rhondda Valleys (Ferndale)where he had I think his last child Louisa b1876.

I was just surfing the web and came across this place and I love it. This is a great place for Bowditch's, wether we know each other or not. My family has a short history, but detailed history of the Bowditch's on our wall and I was wondering if the crest on it was real or just something that is made up. The crest is seven gold arrows and it says the most ancient Bowditch Coat Of Arms is Silver with a way horizontal stripe between three red bows with gold. It has an official seal on it so I am assuming it was real, but you never know. That sheet says where the Bowditch's originate, which i find fasinating.

Anyway, I would love to meet my relates (no matter how distant), so if you would like to chat, just post a message!

BOWDITCH of DORSET

As part of the events being planned to celebrate my Village's 150th Anniversary in 2008 I am undertaking to write a piece on the British Home Children who came to this area.
I have discovered a brother and two sisters from Chetnole, Dorset by the name of Bowditch who came here in 1897....Harry, Mary & Harriet.
On the marriage certificate of one of the girls she listed her parents as Nicodemus Bowditch & Lucy Peach.
I have found out from the marriage of Nicodemus that his parents were John Bowditch, son of Matthew and his wife was Mary Bowditch, daughter of William, all of Thorncombe.
I found Nico & Lucy on the 1881 census and have John & Mary in 1861 in Pilsden Village, on the 1871 in Melbury Bubb and on the 1881 census, they are in Melbury Osmond.
1881 says thar John was born in Thorncombe and Mary was born in Wooten-Fitzpaine.
I found a baptism for a Mary BOWDIDGE to William & Elizabeth 27 Jan 1828 and a marriage in the same place for William Bowdidge & Elizabeth Newberry 25 Jan 1809. Have no idea if these are the right folks or not!
I did find a marriage in Sherborne District Dec Q 1880 For Nico & Lucy and the births of several possible children in the same district.
Also found a death for Lucy Peach Bowditch at age 37 in Sept Q 1894 in Sherborne and the birth of Arthur Edward in the same Q and his death in the Dec Q of the same year. I am assuming that Lucy die din childbirth and that Nico was forced to put his children in an orphanage. They were sent to Canada from The Canadian Emigrant Society in Bristol, Gloucester in 1897.
Any help greatly appreciated. Would love to hear from anyone who might be descended from this line as well.

Just discovered ancestor John Bowdidge. Born around 1810 in Wooton Fitzpaine apparently, married Alice Smith about 1830. Probably married same area as first child born there in November 1831 (Alice).

I am researching the Smith side but would like details of the marriage if possible, and who witnesses were. I'd also like to confirm John's parents and d.o.b.

The Surname BOWDITCH is of the lactational grope of surnames “of Bowditch” an estate in Dorset-shire possessed by the family at an early period. The name has many variant spellings witch include Bowdidge, Bowdage and Bowdige.
Local names usually denoted where a man held his land, and indicated where he actually lived. Early records of the name mention BOWDITCH (with out surname) who was documented in the year 1185, and William Bowditch appears in the same county in the year 1273. Edwin Boditch was documented during the reign of Edward III (1327-1377) and Richard Bowdiche, listed in the Yorkshire Poll Tax of 1379.

Likewise if any one has a copy of our family crest (coat of arms) I would appreciate it

I am told that my mother was 1st married to a Jack Bowditch before she married my father. The info I have on him is minimal.
They supposedly were married in February 1938 and he died in February 1940. If you have knowledge of this Jack, please contact me. They were to have met while working in a sanitarium in North Carolina, she a nurse, he a 'technician'. I checked on the 1930 NC census, there WAS a Jack listed but I don't believe it was this one. SSDI was no help either. My mother was born in 1914, so I'm guessing he was about the same age, but of course I could be wrong. Was his given name something else and he went by Jack, like John F. Kennedy???? HMMMMMMM.....If you can suggest anywhere I might be able to see marriage records for February 1938, death records for 1940 or any other means of research, could you let me know?

Hi, I'm researching my gg.grandfather, he was Clarence Bowditch, born around 1832 in Clapham England, he married Eliza Sherlock in Margate, Kent, England in 1854.
Their first son Harry was born in February 1855.

Clarence and Eliza sailed for Australia in 1857 on the 'Hindostan'.

My ggg-father was John Hollister, who d. 29 Sept 1845 in Dansville, Steuben Co, NY.
From the petition to have his will proved on 17 Feb 1847 it names his surviving children that i know of. One that has stumped me is " Mary, wife of Asa Bowditch, residing somewhere in the state of Pennsylvania" Not sure but i think Mary may be another dau.
I have been unable to locate Asa Bowditch on any federal census, at least not in PA. Was hoping someone may have him and Mary in their family tree.

Horace is listed in the 1895 NJ Census in Hoboken with his mother Sarah C. Bowditch, Elida L. Bowditch and a David Hillard.

I find Beatrice Bowditch in the 1920 NY Fed Census listed as a widow with children - Horace (17), Chester (15) and Alice (9).

I am researching my Bowditch ancestors and have found the following information:

Aaron Bowditch (my ggg grandfather), born 1827, Blackdon Dorset. Married Elizabeth (surname as yet unknown) born 1825. Children that I know of (all born in Somerset) are:
William born 1859
George born 1860
Jane born 1866
Samuel born 1868

At some point they moved to the Port Talbot area (Taibach) and Samuel (my gg grandfather) spoke Welsh so it must have been when Sam was a child.

Sam married Ellen Jane (surname as yet unknown) and they had lots of children:

Thomas John born 1890

George Henry Bowditch married Annie Laurie Morgan and they lived in Ynysddu, Monmouthshire. They had lots of children:

Violet born 1924
Bruce William born 1927
Edmund John born 1930

Only Violet is still alive.

Hello everyone! I just found this website and am so excited! I'm recently married, and my maiden name was Bowditch (I didn't want to completely get rid of it so I took it as my middle name). For Christmas for my husband I am hoping to paint and frame the Bowditch and Milesi (my married name) Family Crests side by side. I've found some websites that claim they will send you a copy of your family crest for $19.95, but I'm concerned about how genuine these are. Does anyone here have a digital photo, or digital color copy of the Bowditch Family Crest that they'd be willing to email to me? Any help would be appreciated!
