Good day Sarah,
My name is Michael Wahl and have a great grandmother named Margaret Bowerbank born in December 1843 at Bridge end near Haverthwaite, in Lancashire. She married Joseph Brown 22 Feb 1866. Her Family members were Dinah *1841, George Bernard *2nd qrtr 1848, Agnes *2nd qrtr 1850. Her parents names were James Bowerbank and Alice Pearson born 1814 and 1809 respectively. My mother told me that the name Bowerbank was derived from Bourbon who were royalty escaping the French Revolution. But if my ancestors's occupations were any indication of origins they were pretty humble. As you live in the general area where they were born and lived, I am hoping you may have more complete information.
I hope to hear from you.
Michael

John Wainwright Bowerbank

John Wainwright Bowerbank was the name of two, possibly three, individuals. The first, born about March 1857, was a son of William Bowerbank, born August 1832 in Stanwip, Cumberland, and his wife Hephizibah Wainwright, born May 1838 in Liverpool. He is found in San Francicso in the 1910 census. The second was born 23 September 1879 in Liverpool and died in Los Angeles 10 December 1948. The third, for whom only the middle initial W and the designation "junior" has been found, was born in New Jersey about 1903. This last is a fourth-cousin of my wife, Glennis (Wainwright) Johnson. Does anyone know of this Bowerbank family?
Rockne Johnson
rockjohnson@earthlink.net

Bowerbank Farm

Bowerbank is the name of a farm in Westmorland (now Cumbria). It lies on the east bank of the river Eden a quarter-mile north of Pooley Bridge. It was in the possession of my Smith ancestors until 1712. I have traced this Smith line in Wills which name this property back to that of Thomas Smythe in 1587.
Rockne Johnson
Sedona, Arizona
rockjohnson@eathlink.net

I am from Canada, and researching my husbands family tree. The ancestor that came from England was John Bowerbank, born Nov 11, 1830 in Clifton, Nottingham, England. He married a Sarah Ion also born in Clifton, Nottingham England on Feb 9, 1837. They immigrated to Canada (southern Ontario) in the mid 1850's. Don't know exactly, they just show up in the Canadian Census in 1861. Do the names above, dates or locations mean anything to the line of Bowerbanks you have traced? I've been working 25 years, and can't get any further back than this.... My site is here http://www.painthorsewest.com/bowerbankfamily/
if you want to have a peak (its slow to load, but be patient...). You could email me at barb.bowerbank@gmail.com
Thanks

Yes, this fellow was a relative of my husband. I have done some work on his family and have some documents posted. There is much confusion on the name, as there seems to be 2 John Telford C Bowerbanks in my family and we have records that seems to support this. I don't have a lot of time to do any searching, until I hit retirement, but if you want to see some of this I have a website I am slowly posting more info to. It is here (entry on John Talford Conway Bowerbank II)
http://www.painthorsewest.com/bowerbankfamily/getperson.php?...
If this is not a link just cut and paste into your browser.
main page of my site is
http://www.painthorsewest.com/bowerbankfamily/
Are you related to the Dorsey's or Bowerbanks?

Thomas studied Medicine in Edinburgh as did two of Sarah's brothers, Edward Turner and William Turner. Thomas became interested in homeopathy hence probably naming his children after Hahnemann.
Lewis Quier Bowerbank MD graduated from Edinburgh in 1835 two years before Thomas. He was the son of the Rector of the Parish of St Catherine and he eventually became the Custos of Kingston. There is a statue of him at the gate to Bellevue Hospital in Kingston and he is credited with revolutionizing the conditions in hospitals in Jamaica especially KPH.

She was the gdr of a Wm Bowerbank of Greystoke, who could either be s of John or of Thos, but in any case looks like the ggs of Jas & Janet Burbank, who married @ Greystoke in 1581. If you have worked out these relationships, I would be very pleased to have yr info, & can send details of my family tree, if desired.
Many thanks,
Geoffrey White,
Stevenage, Herts.

Albert Bowerbank

I recently went on a trip to France to see the WW1 battlefields and I came across a gravestone in Tyne Cot cemetery with the name Bowerbank on it. It belonged to Albert Bowerbank, who was killed in action on the 22nd of August in 1916, I think. He was part of the Seaforth Highlanders. I was wondering if anyone knew anything else about him? It was quite odd seeing the name Bowerbank on a gravestone of someone from the war. Very unexpected. Anyway, if anyone does know anything about him, I would love to here it! Thanks.

Jonathan,

Thank you for your enquiry, my first sight of the reference to the savages was in a book on the crusades writen by Robert Runcie, and unfortunatly, with a large number of what were my remaing family items, and collected information (no computers in those days), this book and the family crest, which I obtained from an extreemly ancient volume on Heraldry I discovered in York, were lost during my time living overseas while serving in the Royal Air Force. I have little left now except for a copy of my fathers birth certificate, and a want to see the family tree put together, and perhaps published.

My very best regards
James.

John Bowerbank Dee was born c 1820 in Newcastle, England, I do not know his parents name but I am fairly sure his maternal grandparents were Matthew and Sarah Bowerbank who owned a cloth mill in Stroud, Gloucestershire. around 1840. (I do not believe they were from there they may have been from Cumberland or Westmoreland) John B. Dee was married to Lavinia Smith and had 6 children Henry, Alfred, William, May, Ella, Ada. Henry was a Schoolmaster in Newcastle area. Alfred married Goergina Glasper and moved to New York in 1892. Any information on any of these lines would be great.

May I ask where you found that information and if you have an image of the crest or coat of arms that you could possibly scan and send me?

I'm Melvin Ryan Bowerbank's 5th child of 7, and some of us have children. So as you can see the Bowerbank family is growing strong here in the states.

He married Elizabeth Ann BAMLETT in Aug 1858 in Pittington, County Durham, and I think he died in 1889 (Elizabeth was widowed by the time of the 1881 census).

They had 7 (or more) children, all born in Sherburn, County Durham. These were Elizabeth Jane (~1860), William George (1862), Thomas (1864), Annie (~1866), Catherine (~1869), Robert (1870) and John Joseph (1872).

Annie married Philip PYBURN and they had a son Thomas Bowerbank Pyburn who was killed at Ypres in 1917.

If anyone has any links to these I'll be happy to supply what information I've got.

Greetings all! I am interested in John Bowerbank's daughter, Esther, from the Cumberland area who married Edward Huggins in the late 1700's. The Huggins' had a number of children and later moved to the Toronto area, but I'm not sure Esther made the trip.

Any information would be much appreciated!

Bowerbank - Greystoke/Skelton

I am definitely interested in obtaining any information you have on the Bowerbank family. My Great, great, great, great grandfather (EDWARD HUGGINS) married ESTHER BOWERBANK on Nov 1, 1794 in Greystoke. I believe ESTHER was born around 1775 - her father was JOHN BOWERBANK and mother was MARY (Williamson?). I believe John and Mary had other children - John; Thomas; John (2 John's ?); Barbara and Matthew.

Specficially, in addition to confirming the above, I'm interested in the following:

Esther's birth/christening date (and location)
Esther's date of death and burial location
John's birth date - he died March 11, 1824 and is burried in Skelton Parish, Cumberland
John's father/mother (and theirs going back to, hopefully, the 1500's)
Lastly, my ancestors on the HUGGINS side also came from the Skelton area. While I do have a great deal of information on them, I'd be interested in knowing if you have uncovered anything pertaining to the HUGGINS name during your research.

Thanks for any help you can provide - Kevin Huggins (Madison, Wisconsin, USA)

Family tree back to 1500's

A couple of years ago I was contacted by a family member in Penrith, trying to trace our family tree. Between us, and with the help of a distant relation, we got back to the 1500's. Most of our ancestors were from Greystoke, Penrith. We contacted branches of the family in Leeds, Northumberland, Durham, Edinburgh, and the Midlands. We even got copies of family wills from 1756. I may be able to help with some queries and would be happy to send on the info that I have.

I am looking for any information on a Mary Bowerbank. She married my 3 x Great Grandfather Richard John Relph (about 1840) in Cumbria, Lakes District, England. The only other details I have is that they had at least one child Joseph Relph born 23 July 1843 in Sebergham, Cumbria.

Melvin,

I hope you don`t mind me replying to your email, but, as you can see from the sirname, there sems to be a connection. I have been looking for family connections and keep returning to the bowerbank name. I have been able to trace"loosley" the family name back to the second crusades, when a group of "demi naked savages" were employed as mercenaries, these were the Bowerbank, The family crest is a red shield with an inverted sable (silver) chevron (stripe) and three sable cups beneath, the shield should be surmounted by a demi naked savage, carrying a club, with laurel wreath to head and waist, the "savage" should only be visible from the waist up. The family seems to have come to prominrnce while based in the north and north east, where at one time there was a Bowerbank Hall though I believe that this fell into ruin some time ago. The family seems to have had interests in property, industry and mining throught the Northumbria, Cumbria and Durham areas, Particularly in Bowburn, Coxoe, Penrith,
My particular interest within the "Family" is a James Scott Bowerbank(s), who was a colector of "items of interest" throught the 1800s. I am particularly interested in any of his notebooks, catalogues etc. You may also like to take a look at Tropaeum bowerbankii. For my sins I originate from County Durham , My Fathers name was Thomas, and my Mothers Vera, though they both died while I was quite young.
I hope that this is of use and interest to you
James

Hi Sarah, I'm afraid I can't help you as I haven't found any links to my maiden name in the Preston area. Like you I've been dabbling in the family surname for a few years now. I have a few clues to my father's family who lived in Leeds, and my grandfather's family who came from Cumberland. There are lots of links to the name there but they are nearly all in the 18th century - and so I have a bit of a gap to fill. I hope in a couple of year's time I'll have more time to search, and the latest census, which will help me enormously, will be easier to access.
Good luck with the search!

Hi - I found the message-board by accident when browsing - I'm just thinking of retiring and will spend my time researching my family history so was pleased to see that there are other Bowerbanks out there with the same ideas. I was born in Leeds in 1942, my father was Lewis Bowerbank (a name also given to his uncle). His fathers name was John, who moved to Leeds from Birkenhead, but the family originally came from Greystoke in Cumbria. I don't have any siblings. Apart from the fact that my father had two brothers, Wilf and Ernest, and a cousin, Harry, this is as far as I know of my family tree. Do you have any relatives from the these areas? I don't have much time for searching at the moment - I have a full-time job, but come retirement I hope to begin in earnest.
