Thank you for the response. My Henry Bowers was born in 1779 in NJ. His father could have been from UK or Netherlands. There also could have been a change in spelling. Some family records show Bowar. Anyway, thanks again.

Gary Bowers

Re: Joseph Bowers/Bauer

Just picked up your posting - sorry. Was Leana married to Alfred Bell? If so, we've got the right person - if not, I've come adrift somewhere. The Bauer family arrived in the US (New York) from Hamburg in 1873; they sailed on the S.S. Bavaria. John Bauer was married to Marie and their children were Frederike (not Eurika - my error), Wilhelm, Caroline, Louisa and Frank. Marie's mother, Marie Loehn also came with them. Emma was born after they arrived (1874). Caroline is shown as Lina (as far as I can make out) on the passenger list. I have a copy of the Mecklenburg-Schwerin 1867 census listing John (b 1836), Marie (b 1836), Frederike (b 1860), Wilhelm (1864) and Caroline plus mother-in-law, Marie Loehn (b 1812). John was a farmer, but he would have worked for the local landowner and would have received his pay 'in kind' so the family would have been very hard up and keen to emigrate to the US. Not long after they arrived in Michigan, they anglicized their surname and given names. John's wife, Marie, died in 1913 at the home of Alfred Bell (Caroline predeceased her in 1901). According to the 1910 census, Alfred was born in England. Rather unhelpfully, the census lists Caroline/Leana as 'Laval' Bell. Does any of this sound right to you? Look forward to hearing from you.

I have seen Deborah Padgett as wife of David on rootsweb.com and familysearch.org. I have not found a family connection with this David. I hope this helps. If you email me your email, I will contact if I run into your David Bowers. My David was born 1730-1796 Beech Island, Edgefield, SC. He was married to Ann and had 9 children. I have hit a brick wall with my David's parents and sibilings and Ann's last name. daisysouthern@yahoo.com

Hi there,
I saw your query and know a little about that family, I am descended down the other major "Bowers family" in Huntington, but they are not related.
If I remember correctly they entered Huntington Co around the turn of the century. The original(sorry, as I said this is not my family) settler was around the turn of the century and he was a doctor, the male descendants have followed the law, Lee Bowers maintains a law office right across from the court house. Your best bet for info in Huntington county though, would be the library. They maintain a very good genealogy room there. Hope that helps.
Please contact me regarding Weaglys and Bowers. I am going to Van Wert County court house this week and will try to look up Clara and Mary Bowers. Samuel Loraine Weagly and Clara were married in Van Wert County. They had at least two children who were born and died here also. I would love to know what Weagly pictures you have. I will be in contact with you again after I visit the court house. Perhaps I can have some good news for you.
Sharon
sspeak@watchtv.net

Emily Bowers & Thomas Kelly Group photo

Attached is a photo taken probably mid to late 1890's. Emily Bowers is seated 3rd from left in center row (holding baby). Her husband, Thomas Kelly, is standing in the center back behind the man with the large chain around his neck. No others in the photo have been identified. The Kelly family lived in Lincoln County, Washington and the name on the wooden barrels reads "Montana Shingle Company, Auburn Wash."

Emily Bowers was born in Montana in 1869 to Samuel Bowers and Josephine Bolon. She married Thomas Kelly and had 7 children with him. They divorced and Emily married Curtis J. Marsh circa 1907. He died about 1913 and Emily moved to Oregon and later married Lornce Ringel. She had 2 daughters with Curtis & no children with Lornce.

Hoping someone can identify some of the other people in this photo. Thanks!

Eaton Jackson Bowers, Senior

EJB, Snr is my great grandfather. His son was EJB, Jr. and was a MS. Congressman in the early 1900's. I have little information on Senior other than he is alledged to have been born in NC in 1828. I am unable to find any birth records with that name from NC in that time frame. Family legend has it that he was a Lieut. in the CSA Calvary. No database of any CSA soldiers has his name. Other written stoires say he was a member of the Madison Rifles, an infantry unit from Madison County, Ms. His name is not on any roster of that unit. He was supposed to be a graduate of Transylvania College in Tennessee and have been a lawyer. I can find no record of him practising law in Mississippi where he was a young man and lived until he died. He married Sallie Mae Dinkins of Madison County also. Any help in finding information of my gggrandfather would be appreciated.

I have their marriage information and the ship log showing their arrival and also the birth and death of a baby while on board ship.

In the 1860 census for Madison, MS, there is an EJ Bowers listed as being born in NC and is 30 years old which would be close to the correct birth date. It lists his occupation as "lawyer - mayor of city" so that fits with what you believe was his occupation. It may be that he used his initials instead of his full name, something in my branch of the Bowers family that is quite common (and often annoying when doing research). Perhaps someone else will have more info for you.

Re: Burial site of Capt. George Bowers?

Thanks for your reply. That post was from my dad, who passed away in 2007.

We did check out the possibilities you mentioned, and neither was our George Bowers. We since learned that he indeed died and was buried on St. Simon's Island, GA, but the gravesite cannot be found.

Looking for a male BOWERS related to Edward born 1801 in Suffolk

Good day fellow Bowers researchers, I wonder if anyone can help me. I have undertaken a DNA test as part of my research which has produced suprising results, I have close matches to a number of SMITHs.

There are a number of possible reasons for this; we may be related back before surnames were widely used, or there may have been an adoption, false paternity, or surname change since. In order to help narrow down which/where this happened I could do with contacting another member of my family who is connected to one of my male ancestors who has undertaken a DNA test or who would be willing to take the test.

It has to be a male born with the BOWERS surname who is related to my father William born 1906 in Kingston on Thames, my Grandfather James born 1872 in Lewisham, his father Robert born 1840 in Lewisham or his father Edward born 1801 in Suffolk. If anyone fits the bill I would love to hear from you.

Regards, Neil
