Hi,
All of the Victorian Bowey's until about 1900 came from North Devon. Now there are other Bowey's in Victoria which have moved over from South Australia. To the best of my knowledge there are no Bowey's from Northumberland in Victoria. I have plenty of information on the Boweys from North Devon who came to Victoria.
Nowella

There appear to be a couple of branches of Boweys, one from Northumberland,, the other from Devon. I believe that some of the northern family emigrated to Victoria, Australia. while those from Devon came to South Australia.. Any information on the Devon Boweys would be appreciated.

Hi,
I'm the grandson of Olive Hall (nee Bowey), I do know that her father (Thomas?) died of a brain hemorrhage some time after Oswald's death in WW1, apparently he was never the same after losing his son. My mother (Olive's eldest daughter),
still has the telegram and bronze plaque.

Good evening, my husband was a Managing Director for one of the Bowey Group of Companies the Head Office was in William Street, South Gosforth. Ralph Bowey Senior started off in Byker, east end of Newcastle upon Tyne, moved to Barras Bridge,Newcastle and eventually to South Gosforth. Ralph Bowey Jnr (his son) died, I believe of a Heart Attack and his eldest son Ronald Ralph became the head of company, eventually selling up to another building firm in the last few years. Ralph Bowey Jnr had three children, Ronald, Madeline and Malcolm. I believe Ralph Bowey's Widow is still living, perhaps in a village named Felton, Northumberland.
Hello Wendy - we've been in contact before - Rootchat? My Robert Bowey who died 3 Mar 1816 Whittingham aged 42 years was therefore born 1774. The closest christening I can find to date is 18 Jul 1779 Stannington, but I haven't looked into it for further confirmation.

Where did Robert's christening 2 Jul 1775 take place?

I had located a marriage for Robert Bowey to Jane Turnbull 7 Feb 1802 St. Mary, Kington-upon-Hull, Yorkshire which I had noted as it fitted perfectly. Upon investigating possible births for Jane, whose surname is spelled Trummel, Turnbull or Trumble so far, I have located Jane Turnbull ch.21 Apr 1778 Eglingham, d/o Amos Turnbull and Jane (Rennison?). On further investigating the christenings of each of their children on IGI, I found that some of the children were christened in Bolton, Yorkshire and others in Northumberland.

They were listed in a church for christenings etc. But when I tried to look at the book, it only contained the front page and no entries, so dead end.

I will contact you again after the New Year, when I am able to give more information

Regards
Les

Great to get your reply. Just a bit more for you.

James Gilbert Bowey's parents were William Richard John Bowey, born 1852 in Plymouth Devon, England. His wife was Annie Williams born Ohio, USA which is where James' brother "John Williams Bowey" got his middle name.

William and Annie had four children, Maria Bowey born Jun 1883, Margaret F Bowey born 1885, then James G and John W. All four children were with William and Annie in the 1900 census.

Annie was actually William's third wife and he had an elder son, William Henry John Bowey, born 1879 at Clinton, Ontario.

William Richard John Bowey's parent were from South Molton, Devon.

Contact me offline if you would like to exchange more information

I think we should trade emails Here is mine as I think you have to be a paid member to contact each other via here

I refuse to pay as I am finding just as much without it.

My email is WendyandHerb at shaw.ca

Appreciate the information on Family Search

I have some certificates but unfortunately are not what you are looking for. Have my grandfather's marriage cert and my gr grandfather's as well as my gr, gr grandfather's.

Interested in your Pedigree Chart from Latter Day Saints. Did it cost you anything??

I am not sure about going to Parish's to view records but there must be a way. They have to be stored somewhere for people to view.

Haven't traced William's tree at all yet. Still trying to fill in the blanks with the rest of them. Like who they married and where, when they died.

Have Googled Bowey numerous times even exact names. With too many results LOL

Hope to get an email from you

Wendy

When you go into Family Search, you'll see Search Records, then under that is Advanced Search, then on the left hit International Genealogical Index...enter names...

I forgot Free BMD isn't much help at that date in time.

Let me know when you have found your certificates and perhaps we can exchange. I know already that what we have are on different branches of the tree so to speak as I am coming off the son "Matthew's branch". Depends how deep you are into genealogy I guess.

I know what it's like having a mess of stuff...I have to enter my resources and file them right away. I received a huge pedigree chart from the Latter Day Saints Church here and every one on the chart has a number, then I got binders together with numbered indexed dividers and I match all my information with the chart and put them in the binder. Originals of anything I put in actual file folders in a drawer.

As for William's parents, it's likely we won't get certificates on them as Free BMD won't have the info back to that date in time....so I'm guessing you don't have their certificates. If you do, I'd be interested. I don't have any for William or Elizabeth, just info that I found on Family Search. I'll have to try looking on there for Parish records like you are.

I'm curious if you can actually go to the parish and "see records"? I've seen it on t.v. where they do that...on that Ancestry show called "Who Do You Think You Are"....did you see it?

Have you traced down Matthew Bowey's line? He's one of the sons?

Is your tree visible on Ancestry? Mine isn't because I'm too new to this.

One last thing....have you tried putting your Bowey name in quotes on the internet? It's amazing what you come up with. Lots of people tracing this name that are all related to us!!!

Keep in touch!

Susan

I am fairly new to all of this as well. I use family search but what is IGI

Found the free BMD doesn't give me much especially for the earlier dates

I too have sent for certificates but can't remember where now. Got me a mess going on and have to organize everything again. LOL

Yes I am going thru the Parich records on line and that is how I located William's parents. As for where they are buried I have no idea until I can compile some of my data.

Perhaps we can exchange Family trees so we can compare what we have.

Wendy

Hi Wendy,
I'm still fairly new to this but have gone quite far in my research by checking out various sources:
If you check: Family Search IGI - William is listed there with all his family (wife and children). There is some information there, but not everything. I tend to use this a lot as well as Free BMD. If I get stuck, but have found info on Free BMD and feel sure about things, I write to the Registrars office in Sunderland for certificates, at a cost. I also found information on the 1841 British census. So, you are going through parish records online??? Is this how you found his parents were John and Elizabeth? I'll see if I can find proof of that too.

I have no certificates at all (on him or her). There are many people searching this family, but many Bowey families, so I know you have discovered how careful you have to be.

Do you know where any of these relatives are buried?

He too is my 4th great grandfather....on a different branch, through son Matthew Bowey and then on down the line.

This is exciting...yes, let's please help each other.

Yes I have William Bowey Baptized about July 22/1770.

I beleive he had 3 more brothers.

Andrew Bap: Nov 15/1767
John Bap: Jan 31/1773 (he would have been my connection and married Phillis Crozier) My Gr, gr, gr, gr, Grandfather

and a Robert bap: July 2/1775

Haven't located any daughters as of yet. How about you??

With that being said I think their parents were John Bowey and Elizabeth Robinson. They were married June 15/1767. If I have the correct one.

Do yo have William's marriage Certificate, birth or death certificate??

Will definitely stay connected. Thanks for the information

Wendy

I believe we are related as I have seen your chain of emails. Let me tell you more:

William Bowey was born about 1770 in Northumberland. He married Elizabeth Wardle 28 November 1792. He died 30 August 1843, all in Durham.

Elizabeth was born abt 1772 in Durham. She died 14 August 1857 in Durham.

I don't have any further information (i.e. parents). There are several members with trees tracing this family.

Please stay connected as I am hoping we can help each other find William and Elizabeth's parents.
HAve already had discrepency about dates of birth by a couple of years

Like this one

I see your BOWIE/BOWEY family in 1841 in Felton, with John aged 66 and born in county (Northumberland). This suggests a birth year of around 1775.

Can you please explain how you know your John was born on 31 Jan 1773?

Everything I found lead to 1773 including the births

Hence it is possible that some dates could be out some.

Have we exchanged what we already have for names, dates etc of our trees

my email is WendyandHerb@shaw.ca

Wendy

I am also researching Bowey/Bowie in Northumberland. It has yet to be proven but my Robert Bowey seems to have been born in Branton, Northumberland about 1774. He married Jane Trummel in 1816 in Whittingham in 1816. Their children, to date, have been born in Kirknewton, Embleton, Whittingham and Glanton. Do you have any references to this family in your records? Robert died in 1816 in Whittingham.

Wendy,

I actually descend from Bowey's from North Devon who I believe originated as Bowhay's and have no common link with the Bowey's from the North of England who most likely come from the Scottish Bowie.

I do however have a number of other ancestors that come from Durham & Northumberland and would happy to point you to places that you may find some good information (for free to!)

Send me an e-mail my hotmail account is cmbowey@ .....

Morris

Morris

thanks for clearing that up for me. Makes sense now.

Everything else is correct. I have already the Manifest and passenger list for my Great Grandparents and Grandfather George.

Do you have a web page listing your Family tree. Would love to compare it to what I have.

Find it difficult to believe that there were so many Bowey's in Durham Northumberland region and they aren't related.

Here is the link to my webpage for Friedrich - Bowey Family tree.
http://www.myheritage.com/site-68015261/friedrich-bowey

How we do we go about getting in touch with other Bowey's posted here??

Wendy

Wendy,

There is no difference in the birth date. The GRO ref of Sep 1890 simply means the birth occured in the "September" quarter of 1890 which is from 1st July to 30th September which matches perfectly with your date of 18 July 1890

Morris

Thanks for the input. Have sent for the marriage certificates for both George and his father John.

slight difference in the brith date of George M H Bowey though

I have born July 18, 1890
Place of birth: Blaydon on Tyne, Durham County, Northumberland

Not saying I am right or you are wrong.

Just makes me wonder Cause when I search I come up with the same data.

Yet in the Family Bible it reads the above.

Wierd. Could there possibly be two George Mather Hutchinson Bowey's?? Perhaps the data in the Bible is wrong.

Wendy
PS Feel free to contact me
