No maam, no one is from Alabama. Our family originated in Waco (Irving) Texas, from there to Boley, Oklahoma, from there to Okmulgee, Oklahoma and then some went to Tulsa and Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. After that, we scattered in the 40's and 50's and 60's to Nebraska, Georgia, Texas, California, Louisana, Illinois, and Kansas. I'm trying to find my grandmother's family who were the Fenner's of Texas or Oklahoma/part Native American.

Sarah Bowie/Charles Wesley Bowie

I'm searching for information about my ancestor Sarah C. Bowie. Sarah was born August 22, 1793 in South Carolina. She married Hugh Porter (b. 6/12/1791) of Abbeville, SC, on 9/19/1814. Hugh and Sarah moved their family to Lauderdale County, Alabama around 1825. A Charles Wesley Bowie moved his family to Lauderdale Co. around the same time, and Sarah & Hugh named a son Charles Wesley. I beleive Sarah and Charles Wesley may have been brother and sister. Do you have any information about this line of Bowies? Any help would be greatly appreciated

My Great-greatfather named William Bowie was born in Ayrshire, Scotland, in 1858 and was in Iowa by 1866 when he married his wife, Helen Stuart, also from Scotland. I do not know the names of any of his siblings. While in Iowa he farmed, but was unsuccessful. He relocated to Washington state where he was in mining. He had 5 children, 1 son and 4 daughters, who all remained in Wash. or out west for their lifetimes.

I don't have anything before Isaac & Johanna.

My connection is through Joan Bowie b c1842 in Hawick who married George Edmondson b c1842 in Hawick, son of Isaac Edmondson b c1820. Their daughter Janet b 1883 married a George Henry Cairncross and their daughter Joan Bowie Cairncross married my grandfather Richard David Wilkinson.

I still have a lot of dates of births, marriages and deaths to find for Edmondsons. I typed in the Edmondson name for births on the scotlandspeople website and got 46 matches so this will keep me busy.

On the Bowie side I typed in the Bowie name into the scotlandspeople website and came up with about 100 names from between 1538 and 1885 and this was only for Roxburghshire.

Ritchie

They had a so Isaac, born in Coldbeck, Cumberland, but scottish census records for 1841 and the english 1851 records say he was born c1820, not 1826 as you said. He married a Isabella Montgomery born c1819. I do not have birth certs for any of them. Estimated birth dates are taken from census records

Do we have a connection?

Hope to hear from you soon

Ritchie

Thanks. I knew that that the brother of Elizabeth Bowie named James Bowie married a Miller. I was actually asking about the James who was a son of Allen. I was under the impression that this James and his brother John (who apparently married a Judith Catlett....though records prove that he was also married to a Margaret) were BOTH in VA, and that it was actually a brother of Allen who was in MD (per a William and Mary Quarterly record). In any case, I have found some actual records of a James Bowie in Caroline Co., VA in the 1730s...whoever that was).

My REAL issue is that I question if it was the Elizabeth Bowie who was suppposedly born about 1750 who married James Smith as his second wife (James Smith had been married Sarah "Sally" Apperson). James Smith was still fathering children into at least the early-1800s, and the last child APPEARS to have been born about 1817 (when Elizabeth would have been about age 67)! As such, I wonder if this was POSSIBLY a different Elizabeth Bowie than some believe? Does anyone have an actual marriage bond/record for Elizabeth Bowie and James Smith?

OK. It is easy to get confused with all the James and Johns. If I understand your note correctly you were asking about James Bowie, brother of Elizabeth Bowie (b. 1750 m. James Smith). James married Catherine Gilchrest Miller and had 9 children (see http://www.mclallens.com/webcards/wc13/wc13_485.html). These are the Virginia Bowies.

Later you asked about James Bowie brother of John and son of Allen. This is the Prince Georges County branch of the Bowie Family. See http://www.mclallens.com/webcards/wc04/wc04_166.html. He married Marha ? and had 3 children.

All the sources are cited on this website but by far the two that would provide you with the most information on both the Virginia and the PG Co., Maryland branches are:
1. Effie Gwynn Bowie, Across the Years in Prince Georges County, Originally published in Richmond, VA in 1947. The last 300 pages are a reprint of #2.
2. Walter Worthington Bowie, "The Bowies and Their Kindred"

Hope this helps,

Pete McLallen
Northville, Michigan

Mary Bowie m. John Jordan Scheick, Sr.

I was impressed with the Bowie information, and the speed that people replied to the James Bowie query. I'm hoping someone might have more information on Mary Bowie, born 12 mar 1852 in Uniontown, Fayette Co. PA to Theophilus Bowie and Mary Jane Smith. She married John Jorday Scheick and had 9 children: Annie, Paul, Louise, Charles Henry, John Jordan Jr., Mary K., Leona, Ida B., and William. I'd like more on John Jordan as well, if anyone has something. These are my great-great-grandparents on my father's side.
Note that I have seen the 1900, 1910, 1920 federal censuses.
Thanks!

I havn't worked on my genealogy notes in several years, but recently found a 2008 query for John. I looked, and found that I have a conflict. I have John's first wife as Mary Offutt, m. 1729 with sources: Effie Gwynn Bowie, Across the Years in Prince George's County, A Genealogical and biographical history of some prince george county Maryland and allied familes" 1949
AND
Walter Worthington Bowie, The Bowies and their Kindred.

However, I have his first wife listed as Mary Beall, dau. of George Beall using the source: Genealogical and Personal History of Fayette County, John W. Jordan, Lewis Historical Publishing Co., 1912.

Can anyone shed light on this? I can't get any of these 3 sources, although I've read an excerpt from the Jordan book online.

Hi, just found this post.
There is another book about bowies, called "Genealogical and Personal History of Fayette County", John W. Jordan, Lewis Historical Publishing Co., 1912.
I doubt many libraries have either book, my deland FL library didn't and couldn't get it. I saw one of them (forget which) on amazon.com for ~$200. However, there is a large excerpt from the Jordan book at this link below, which mentions the names for which your looking.

http://www.searchforancestors.com/bios/pennsylvania/history_...

These people are in my distant family also, so perhaps we're distantly related.

Brian,
We have tried to find that link but have been unsuccessful. Mark Davis and Everette Bowie have a lot of information on the Charles County Bowies but we can find no link. They also did not marry into the same families even though the counties are right next to each other in Maryland. Bob Bowie and I have discovered some evidence that there was some communication with the New England Bowies by the Prince George's County line but we never found the direct link. We suspect that it is back in Scotland. I even spent some time with the genealogist outside of the Church of the Holy Rude in Stirling, Scotland when I was over there but could not find any connection even though the families all lived near each other (see http://www.mclallens.com/Bowie_Scottish_Homes.htm). When I go to Scotland again I want to go to the Dunblane Cathedral (http://www.dunblanecathedral.org.uk/Location.html) as I understand they have some good records.

Pete

I'll have to defer to the experts on James Smith and Elizabeth Bowie. As you can see from the source notes the first source is a Broderbund CD. Then I received similar information about them from Bob Bowie who forwarded an email to me in Jan 1999 from Elizabeth Randolph. You might want to send her an email and see if she can help with original source material. Their email addresses are in the source notes.

Pete McLallen
Northville, Michigan

Absolutly correct. He was a mens tailor both back in Scotland and then here in the United States before he worked for the IRT. My grandfather tells me that he went to work with him down in the New York subways once when he was a young child. He said that they had lived in Windsor (?spelling) New York as well as Jamacia New York. I'll have to ask him about Edward and Ethel and if he remembers their names. My grandfather married a Mary Haslem out of New York but born in Florida I beleive. I appreciate the information and will pass along whatever my grandfather remembers the next time we get a chance to talk. Any other info is greatly appreciated. Thanks again, David. PS-do you know if he was artistic at all? It seems to run in the family.

One of the things he remembered is that his father James Abernathy Bowie-II was born in Susquahana PA 1879 and his father James Abernathy Bowie-I was born in Scotland. He cant remember which part yet however I found out that he didn't come thru Ellis Island like so many immigrants. Instead he came across the Canadian border as he had family that settled first there and then came to the United States setteling mostly in New England. His father left his mother and remarried up in Jamacia New York and took with him a photo of him in Scotland playing the bagpipes in the traditional Scottish garb. He worked for the Inter Railroad Transit. Any info if this is part of the same family would be greatly appreciated.

John and James Bowie-Caroline Co., VA-1700s

John Bowie is said to have married Judith Catlett...though some records clearly show that he was married to a Margaret (at one time, at least). One of the daughters of this John Bowie was named Elizabeth Bowie, and the records that I have seen show that she was born about 1750.

There was a James Smith in Caroline Co., VA, and he died by Oct 1819. His second wife was an Elizabeth Bowie, but it does not appear to me that she could have been the Elizabeth Bowie who was born circa-1750 (though one message shows that she was), since this James Smith was still fathering children with his second wife, well into the early-1800s (with the last child APPARENTLY being born around 1817).

I note from a William and Mary Quarterly entry that the above John Bowie had a brother named James Bowie, and both men were sons of an Allen Bowie from Scotland (Allen Bowie was apparently a brother of the founder of the Bowie family in MD). Does anyone know if James Bowie married and/or fathered any children? John and James Bowie apparently came into the Caroline Co., VA area around 1742. Any comments on the Elizabeth Bowie who was the second wife of James Smith of Caroline Co., VA would be greatly appareciated. Thanks!

She said we share ancestry in the family of James William Bowie who married Nancy Ann Hearn and lived in Washington Co., OH. She also said she is in her 80’s and has lots of stories to share. I experienced a lockup of my computer that very weekend, and although able to get it working again, I lost about 2 weeks worth of emails. Regrettably, hers was one of them and I have no way of retrieving it. I was very excited to hear from this relative; could she PLEASE send me another email? My address is keyara@suddenlink.net .
Bingo,
This sounds like a good hit. A lot of what you related is what I have except for the entering the US via Canada. The Born date I have for J.Bowie jr is 2/4/1886 Death 2/13/1936 Married to Amanda Ward 12/31/1907. I have no good dates for J.Bowie sr. but he was married to Annette Thompson. He did work for the IRT and was also a tailor. I believe there were 2 children Edward and Ethel. Would be glad to exchange any other info I have.
