I have seen the book by charles Warrington. The John Bowker he claimed was a brother of James and Edmund was, however, the son of Edmund. The Spelling Bowker is from the Welsh for "Butcher". I don't put much stock in old stories like this. They usually don't turn out to be very close to the truth.
The "Crown Jewels" story is a family legend documented by Charles Elzey Warrington Jr. in a book titled; The Rosine Sarah Buker Genealogy and other Bowker-Buker Genealogies data. He indicated in his research this legend kept coming up. He found no hard evidence, but the pervasiveness of the legend seems to lend it some creedence.

In summary, (I don't have all my information in front of me) there was a Bowker working in the counting house of King Charles in the 1640's. Some of the crown jewels turned up missing (presumably sold by the Queen to raise money for King Charles and the wars) and this Bowker came under suspicion. In about 1645 two of his sons escaped England and ended up in America, and one infant son (James) was sent with a sister to live with relatives in Sweden. Some 25-30 years later James joined his brothers in the colonies.

In the mid-1700's you will often see the names Bowker and Buker being used interchangeably. This may be due to the Swedish influence on the name or possibly a desire of the Bowkers to hide their identity due to the "legend." I correspondance with genealogists I was informed that the name Baker may have also been used although I have no evidence of this.

br,
--Rob

Re: BOWKER''s of Maine

Thank you. I have been in touch at length with Lucinda since that 2008 question was posted. The "well documented and well posted" information about this family is not very accurate, as we found out. Cyprian's second wife, the widow Mary Mayhew Cole, did not put out any of her children and it was she, Mary, NOT Rachel, who drowned in the millpond in Pinhook abt 1850. A local historian, Ruby Emery, edited some of the documents related to this affair, and unfortunately got a number of facts wrong in the process. All of the people mentioned here seem to be buried in unmarked graves, so you may never find them with any certainty. Mary may have been buried with her first husband, Daniel Cole, Sr. in Greenwood, but there are no stones for either. Rachel may be buried in what is known as the "Whale's Back" Cemetery in Pinhook, North Woodstock, but I don't think there is any stone for her. Cyprian may be in the same cemetery in Pinhook, or in whatever was the closest graveyard to the Woodstock Town Farm where he died. Finding that spot might be possible with help from the Woodstock Historical Society, but there are almost surely no stones for the paupers. What I have often wondered is -- why was Cyprian left to die on the Town Farm when he had at least 4 living adult children at the time of his death?

My niece, Lucinda Brown is our official famil geneaologist but today I was looking up info on Cyprian,( my great great great great grandather) myself.

To your question, it is well documented annd well posted that he married Rachel's sister in Woodstock..I gather they were very poor as it says in the record she gave her children for care and had no children themselves from that marriage.(pretty sure about that). Cyprian was according to Lucinda's research buired in a paupers grave ( which is the focus of my search today..to determine whether the exact location of his burial place is recorded as I would like to arrange a more suitable reburial perhaps with Rachel but not sure where she was buried).

Rachel & Cyprian had one child John who married Dorothy Starbird. Their son John married Eliza Coffin and my grandfather Thaddeus Wesley Bowker was one of their children

Not sure what became of Mary, Rachels sister and Cyprian's second wife.

Grateful for any info on where Cyprian and or Rachel are bburied.

James Bowker did come from Sweden where he was raised. It seems that when his parents died he was taken to Sweden by a sister from the story I've heard. The brothers ended up in Maine and New York if my memory serves me. Sorry I haven't shared this infomation before but I haven't been doing any genealogy for a few years. Hope I have been some help.
Ron
The Dorothy Bowker I am looking for would have been my mother. I was born in a hospital in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania on January 26, 1946 and put up for adoption. I was adopted and had very loving parents. I don't think your Dorothy Bowker would be the correct one. I guess the age could be correct but the UK. I don't see that unless she lived here for a while.

Dear calebloveschili,

I am sorry to disappoint you but we are not related at least not since ca 1850 or the birth of Leland. Most of what I was planning on providing to you has been provided by others.

My husband has BOWKER blood and I am actively searching those relatives mainly in NJ but also Ohio and Indiana. The general consensus is that Wm BOWKER estimated birth ca 1680 came from England to America, married and lived in NJ and provided for future generations by many children. It is also generally thought that the NJ BOWKER line can trace its lineage back to Wm the Conqueror. I am not so sure as I have not seen proof of that assertion. Cindy

OK thanks. Am still trying to find out how John Nesbitt Bowker's wife, Romola Ann Bowker (nee Panisset) died. The story is she died on the steps of the Empire State Building, and we don't know where she is buried. Romola was British, as was John Nesbitt Bowker according to the Commonwealth War Graves Commission photographic project:
http://twgpp.org/information.php?id=2629938
He was buried in England and his nationality is listed as British, but it seems his parents were living in Ontario. His father was born in Finchley, London so I assume his wife was Canadian.

Connection to Ontario uncertain at this time. Relations definitely in Quebec. One branch also had an RCAF fighter pilot lost over France: Harlow Wilbur Bowker. Massachusetts family had a branch that is said to have wanderers who went to VT, ON and then west to BC. Another branch did this but returned to VT.

I have found a marriage certificate for Lena Bowker to William Cuttings. The date is November 18, 1889 in Phipsburg, ME. They were married by Rev R. S. Sheaff. I found it behind an old picture frame that I purchased off Ebay 2-3 years ago. I would love for some of their family to have it, but I'm having trouble locating them. My email is ata@nctc.com if someone would like to contact me about it.
My Grandfather was Harry S Bowker (1863-1894) married to Annie Jane Hopkins. They lived in Groveton NH. In some census reports his name has been mistakenly read to be Harvey. He was the son of Nathaniel Beaman Bowker (1889-1821) and Mary Parnell. Nathaniel was from VT, Mary was from Melbourne Canada. The line goes on back Jonathan, to Solomon, to John, to John, to John, to Edmund Bowker. I have some questions and would like to exchange info with anyone sharing my branch of the tree. Anyone out there descended from Nathaniel? Thanks.

vam

The photo you posted looks very much like William & Sarah and their son Charles. He died in 1977. I'd love to see your website and share information with you. I've just unearthed photos of the Bowkers going back to William & Sarah. I'm scanning them & would be happy to send you a copy.

Hello. I am a descendent of Sarah (Sallie) Bowker, daughter of Samuel Alstone Bowker. The information I have is that Samuel got in trouble in England, changed his name, and came to America. He actually married a lady who lived in Dickson County. It is my understanding that he did make several trips back to England, always to get money, which according to family stories, was quite substantial.

The trunk which he brought from England with his initials has been passed down, by tradition, to the oldest daughter in each family. So, I am in possession of this trunk. I have a daughter, but she has no children, so I will pass it to my older granddaughter.

I am researching this family also. I have found birth records that show they actually had 14 children, all born in Union, Maine (my husband is the descendant of #14). David and Molly moved to Maine right after they were married. They are listed in the 1790 census in Warren, ME. In the 1800 - 1820 censuses, they are listed in Union, ME. They then moved to Ohio - being listed in the 1840 census in Congress and Richland, OH.

Were you able to find out any more about Molly's lineage?
