http://users.erols.com/candidus/wbowles.htmHistory of Alabama and Incidentally of Georgia and Mississippi, from the earliest period by Albert Jame Pickett of Montgomery pg. 115 William Augustus Bowles, a native of Maryland, at the age of fourteen, entered the British army, as a foot soldier, and, after a years's service against his countrymen, sailed with a British regiment to Jamaica, in 1777, as an ensign, and then thence, went to Pensacola. Here he was deprived of his rank, for insubordination. Disgusted with military discipline, and fond of a roving life, he contemptuously flung his uniform into the sea, and left Pensacola, in company with..... pg 192 (1803) ...Hawkins and John Forbes, of Pensacola, were in the town, but were concealed, until Sam McNac, a half-breed, had caused Bowles to be made a prisoner. Arriving at a point in the present Dallas county, the canoe was tied up, the prisoner conducted upon the bank, and a guard set over him. In the night the guard fell asleep, when Bowles gnawed his ropes apart, crept down the bank, got into the canoe, quietly paddled across the river, entered a thick cane swamp, and fled. At the break of day, the astonished Indians arose in great confusion, but fortunately saw the canoe on the opposite side, which Bowles had foolishly neglected to shove off. Swimming over to that point, they got upon his track, and by the middle of the day once more made him a prisoner. He was conveyed to Mobile, and from thence to Havana, where, after a few years, he died in the dungeons of Moro Castle....Ancestry.com
Hardbound, ex-libris book, WILLIAM AUGUSTUS BOWLES. DIRECTOR GENERAL OF THE CREEK NATION, by J. Leitch Wright, Jr. Copyriight 1967; University of Georgia Press, Athens; 211 pages."Even if William Augustus Bowles had lived more than forty-two years, it is hard to imagine how his career could have been more exciting, He was an artist, actor, diplomat, navigator, soldier, musician, baker, linguist, hunter, chemist, lawyer, and Indian chief, who at various times lived and dressed as an Indian, reared an Indian family, circumnavigated the globe as a Spanish prisoner, and mingled freely with British royalty and leading London statesmen, scientists, and actors."During the American Revolution he came into contact with the southern Indians while he was a junior officer in a Maryland Loyalist Regiment. For two decades after 1783 his objective was to create a nominally independent Indian state -- the Creek Nation or Muskogee -- which included an undefined area in the American Southeast and Spanish Florida. His Indian state and its polyglot army and navy kept the Southeast in turmoil for years."Though he failed in permanently establishing an Indian state aligned with Britain, his career illustrates the chaotic frontier conditions that existed in the Southeast after the American Revolution and the extent to which Britain was involved here even after recognizing American independence."

GOV. JOSIAH W. BEGOLE 1892 Portrait & Biographical Album of Genesee, Lapeer, & Tuscola Counties, MI,Chapman Bros.
About 1800 William Begole, who was born in 1787, went to New York with his parents and located in Livingston County, where he became engaged in farming. He later located in Mt. Morris of the same county and State, where he spent the remainder of his life, being devoted to the agricultural calling. He was married in the year 1814 to Eleanor Bowles, who was born in Fredericksburg. MD. She was a daughter of Capt. Thomas Bowles, whose record as a Revolutionary soldier serving under Washington, is treasured by his family, and who was of English descent and was born in Maryland. Both our subject's parents were professors of the creed as held by the Baptist Church.
Gov. Begole is a son of William and Eleanor (Bowles) Begole. He was born in Groveland, Livingston County, N.Y., January 20, 1815, just twelve days after the memorable battle of New Orleans. The Governor's career exemplifies strongly the power of heredity. He is a descendant of a good old French family, whose members have ever been conspicuous in loyalty to their homes and country. His father was an officer in the War of 1812 and although like most other men of means at that time, his grandparents on both sides of the house were slave owners, on the evolution of sentiment in regard to slavery they became strong Abolitionists and brought their slaves with them to New York in order to free them. Thus were the seeds of liberty and independence sown for future generations.

---------Frederick Blood ( b. @1771 Germany d. @ 1856-1860 Cohocton, NY)
18th day of July 1844 Frederick Blood, Jr. } a Justice of the Peace for State of New York County of Steuben
FREDERICK BLOOD settled on the farm now owned by CARNEY TYLER, in 1810. He and his sons were hardy, go-ahead fellows. In burning a large fallow the second year after they came, the large log barn which they had built was burned; but BLOOD was not the man to give up or stop at trifles. He built a mill on the creek that came down near the ASHAEL TYLER farm, the site now owned by DAVID WAITE. The old race crossed at the head of Liberty street. With this mill he sawed out the timber and lumber for a farm barn which he built across the road from the house, and is said to be the first frame building put up in this part of the country. It stood the storms of half a century, and was then moved back of the house. In 1815 or '16 he bought lands where North Cohocton now is, and built a tavern on the site of the VAN RIPER Hotel. It was the first framed building at this point, and naturally, his wide awake boys gave it the name of "BLOOD'S CORNERS", a name by which it is known in many localities at the present day, and was the cause of the railway station being called "Bloods." FREDERICK BLOOD was a native of Germany, and came to this town from Ballston, Saratoga county. He had been enticed into the naval service when quite a small lad, and had come to America as a drummer boy on board a man-of-war.

Notes:
October 2, 1828, Louisianna Bowls, wife of the noted William A. Bowles, filed a petition for a divorce and alimony, which petition was afterward granted.
In 1828, Doctor William A. Bowles (born in Maryland in 1799), ......
1829 Before we had a stock law in Indiana, the farmers of this section permitted their stock to run at large. The hogs and cattle would wander for miles from their homestead to come to these springs in seeking to drink from nature's pools in preference to fresh water add testimony to the health giving virtues of these famous springs. And land about these springs, along with other lands in the state which were known as saline lands, were reserved to the state and were sold in 1829 to Thomas and William A. Bowles.

Around 1832, Dr. William Bowles, a nearby businessman, purchased a considerable piece of property around the most significant springs. Eight years later, Bowles and partner John Hursgate began a mercantile trade selling the water and they built a three-story guesthouse for the recovery of the water, they called Pluto Water after the Greek god of the underworld. Bowles chartered the town in 1857 and later died in 1873. His wooden hotel structure burned in 1897 and the property was then purchased by a syndicate fronted by Indianapolis Mayor and National Democratic Committee Chairman Thomas Taggart and he began construction on what is now the French Lick Resort Casino.
William A. Bowles was a physician of renown and quickly recognized the virtues of these waters in establishing the first health resort some time prior to 1840 and built the first hotel at French Lick which stood without much material change until 1881. For several years after establishing this hotel he operated the business and in later years leased the hotel and grounds to Dr. Samuel D. Ryan for a period of 15 years. In about the year 1845 Dr. Bowles entered into a lease with Dr. John A. Lane for what is now known as the West Baden Srpings. Dr. Lane built the first hotel in West Baden and was quite successful in this venture. At the end of five years, the term of his lease, he was able to buy the West Baden Springs from Dr. Bowles and from that time until now there have been two resorts within a little rmore than a mile apart.
William A. Bowles was a remarkable man. This was, perhaps, due, first of all, to his fine appearance. Physically he seemed perfection, large and at the same time very handsome. He measured in his stockings, six feet and two inches in height, and weighed over two hundred pounds. In addition to this a voice of superior softness and musical sweetness charmed the listening ear. These two endowments enabled him to capture the eye and the ear on the first acquaintance. Added to these qualities he wore a pleasant smile and a marked self-confidence that illuminated his physiognomy. He was at one time physician, theologian, minister, politician, statesman, warrior and sage. He knew his intellectual power and used them to mold public opinion. If he was not always sincere he had the faculty of making those about him read in his words and his actions the deepest sincereity. His stock of general information was wonderful. No subjects seemed new or complicated to him. Men came to him for information from every walk of life, and went away satisfied with his confident answers. So popular was he as a physician that his name was a household word in Southern Indiana. The most complicated cases were accorded to him, and often when other doctors gave up a case the old doctor was called in and many times the patient recovered.
In 1846 he was made a Captain of a compnay that enlisted in the Second Indiana Regiment for the Mexican War. The company was formed largely by his influence, and he was unanimously chosen Captain. On the organization of the regiment he was promoted and became Colonel of the Second Indiana Regiment. His popularity was unbounded until the great battle at Buena Vista was fought. The Second Indiana was in the thickest of the fight and lost heavily. At one time during the engagement the Second Indiana was confronted by six to one, and at the same time exposed to a cross fire of artillery. In this dilemma the regiment fell back, and in the disorder which followed Col. Bowles and a part of his men fell in with a Mississippi regiment commanded by Jefferson Davis.
Davis, in making his report to General Taylor, asserted that the Seconed Indiana ingloriously fled, with the gallant Colonel and a few of his men, who remained on the field and did good service in Davis' regiment. When this report became public the soldiers of the Second Indiana were very angry. They acknowledged falling back before the enemy, but asserted that it was by the order of Colonel Bowles. The dispute between the Colonel and the members of his regiment caused ill feelings that were never obliterated.
On the other hand Bowles having been complimented by Jefferson Davis for his gallantry, the two men became life-long friends. Jefferson Davis afterwards became President of the Southern Confederacy and Colonel Bowles of the Second Indiana became the leader of the Knights of the Golden Circle. Bowles was at last arrested for treason, tried by court martial and sentenced to death. On the request of Governor Morton, President Lincoln commuted the sentence to imprisonment for life. He was incarcerated in the Ohio penitentiary until the war closed when he was pardoned and returned to his French Lick home. Broken with age and disappointed ambition he lingered until 1873. He died in his home in the presence of his third wife. Two former wives having each been granted a divorce. The body rested for a number of years in a stone vault in sight of his home. For some reason the remains were then removed to Ames Chapel, some five miles away and buried in a lonely part of the cemetery. Peace to his ashes. (Note: in 1880 in French Lick, Orange, IN a Julia Bowles is listed as widowed b. @ 1833)
Soon after the French Lick Springs hotel was leased to Dr. Samuel Ryan in 1867, the second wife of Bowles obtained a divorce against him with $15,000 alimony. Before the judgement was satisfied, the divorced wife was killed in a steamboat explosion on the Mississippi River. Dr. Bowles remarried in 1873 leaving a widow with no issue. There were two grandchildren who were heirs of the first union of Dr. Bowles, namely, William A. Dill and Minnie Dill. Friends of these grandchildren became interested in them and asked for a revivial of the judgement in favor of Mrs. Bowles, first, of $15,000 which the court granted. In 1880 the hotel property was sold to satisfy that judgement and was bought at sheriff's sale by Hiram E. Wells and James M. Andrews of Paoli, Indiana.
In 1849 William A. Bowles was indicted for practicing without a license, but, in court, upon his own motion, had the indictment quashed.
In September, 1850, Dr. W. F. Sherrod was tried for assault and battermiy with intent to kill Dr. W. A. Bowles, and was convicted of assault and battery without the intent, and fined $2 and costs. The trouble resulted from some misunderstanding concerning the Mexican war, in which both men participated. Early in the fifties John A. Lane and W. A. Bowles became engaged in several suits of trespass, etc.
In 1858 W. A. Bowles was indicted for bringing seven slaves into Indiana and maintaining them there, in violation of the Constitution, in a state of slavery. He pleaded that the slaves were the property of his wife, and were only temporarily at the French Lick Springs, having been brought from Louisville for a short time for their health. The case went against him, however, he being fined $40 in the Common Pleas Court; but he appealed to the Supreme Court. There were seven separate indictments for the seven negroes, only one, as a precedent, being tried. While the case was pending in the Supreme Court Dr. Bowles appeared in court and announced, in answer to charges on the other indictments, that should the Supreme Court decide adversely to him he would plead guilty to the other six indictments. Proceedings on these indictments were then deferred until the decision of the Supreme Court was received, which decision being against him he accordingly plead guilty to the indictments and was fined a nominal sum and costs. This case attracted much interest at the time, as a revolution on the subject of slavery was ensuing. The hostile attitude of the North and the South, the Kansas war, the John Brown insurrection and the Dred Scott case, gave prominence to the Bowles case. Severe comments were made by the New York Tribune on the conduct of Dr. Bowles in endeavoring to establish slavery on the soil of Indiana. Other papers, far and near, commented on the case, making much more out of it than facts warranted.
THE BOWLES DIVORCE CASE: In August, 1868, Eliza Bowles instituted proceedings for a divorce from her husband, William A. Bowles, in the Orange County Circuit Court, upon various charges of improper conduct, and to secure such alimony as the jury might award, her counsel being Messrs. Buskirk, McNutt, Montgomery and Grubbs. The case was begun before Judge Bicknell, but as the defendant asked for a change of venue, upon the ground that the court was biased, Judge Delana R. Eckles was specially selected to hear the case. The trial began on the 1st of December, 1868, and continued from day to day until the 7th of the month, when the jury returned the following verdict: "We, the jury, find for the plaintiff, that she is entitled to a divorce, and that she have and recover of the defendant the sum of $25,000 alimony."The suit thus far had been stubbornly fought by counsel, and no sooner was the verdict received than every possible pretext to evade or annul it was resorted to, but without avail. It is unnecessary to recite the facts brought out on the trial, as the heavy alimony indicates the tendency of the evidence in the minds of the jury. The real and personal estate of W.A. Bowles was found by the jury to be worth from $75,000 to $80,000. The court ordered that the payment of the alimony should be by installments, at stated intervals, and should the defendant fail to so make the payments, his estate was to be levied upon and sold to satisfy the judgment for alimony. When all hope for his case was gone in the Orange County Circuit Court, the defendant appealed to the Supreme Court, but was beaten there also. The defendant failed to pay according to the order of the court, and the interest, costs, etc., raised the amount to be taken from his estate to nearly $40,000. Mrs. Bowles soon died, her claims and property became doubtful and scattered, and what finally became of her estate would be difficult to indicate. This was the most noteworthy case of the kind ever in southern Indiana. The attorneys distinguished themselves in their speeches and their management of the case. The attorneys of Mr. Bowles were T. L. Brown, A. B. Carlton, and T. B. and J. W. Buskirk.
In the 1850’s, as North-South tension mounted, French Lick was a key station of the Negro slave “underground”. To counter this activity, Doc Bowles, who always had indicated sympathy for the Southern cause, helped organize a Confederate secret society, called Knights of the Golden Circle. In 1857, however, Bowles did take time out from his subversive activities to help charter the town of French Lick.
They found evidence, according to subsequent allegations, that on or about October 1, 1863, he conspired with William A. Bowles, Andrew Humphreys, Stephen Horsey, and other Indiana copperheads to overthrow the government, and for this purpose helped organize a secret society, the Order of American Knights, or Order of Sons of Liberty-erected on the dissolved fragments of the Knights of the Golden Circle," which had become discredited. One conspirator identified by government agents was a Kentuckian, Joshua F. Bullitt, and another a Missourian, J. A. Barrett, suggesting that the group might be formulating a broad Northwestern plan. They met in in complete secrecy. Federal agents also gathered evidence that about a month later the group distributed arms to various malcontents for resisting the draft. They further alleged that the plotters held another meeting in on or about , for flagrantly disloyal purposes. This time Milligan, Bowles, and others crossed the line of treason, for they communicated details of their scheme for an armed uprising later in the year to the Confederates, and asked for the cooperation of Confederate forces.
Just before the Civil War, Bowles was arrested, courts-martial, convicted of treason and sentenced to death. President Lincoln, however, quietly commuted the sentence to life imprisonment. Bowles spent the war in a Federal prison in Ohio. He returned to French Lick in 1865 and managed the hotel until his death in 1873.

Notes:
Samuel Bowles Coming from historic old Loudoun county, Virginia, which has given to the service of the United States the wisdom, valor and progressive statesmanship of many distinguished men, and to the social life of the nation the personal charms and intellectual culture of many noble ladies, Samuel Bowles, of Garfield county, this state, who is comfortably settled on a fine ranch in the neighborhood of Carbondale, has in addition to his own force of character and native abilities the incentive to enterprise and breadth of view furnished by a long line of prominent and productive ancestors. His life began on May 19, 1844, and he is the son of Samuel and Amelia Bowles, natives of that state who settled in Buchanan county, Missouri, when it was on the far frontier and all the conditions of life were yet wild and uncomely. There they followed farming and won from the generous soil a good estate. The father was a Democrat in political belief and became a leading man in his new home. He died in 1855 and his wife in 1859. They had a family of six children, three of whom are living: Rachel, wife of Howard Story, of St. Louis, Missouri; Alcinda, wife of William Payne, of Idaho; and Samuel. The last named attended the public schools when he had opportunity, which was not often for long periods, and assisted his parents on the farm, remaining with them until they died. Afterward, in partnership with relatives, he engaged in farming in Missouri with profit until 1880, when he came to this state and located at Leadville. Here he drove freight teams and did other work that he found to do until Christmas of that year, then made a visit to his old Missouri home. On his return to Colorado he settled at Aspen and engaged in teaming for wages, his compensation being fifty dollars a month and his board. He continued this occupation until March, 1882, then came to his present locality, where he worked two years for wages on a ranch. At the end of that time he bought a pre-emption claim of one hundred and sixty acres, on which he afterward proved up and which is the ranch he now owns. This he has greatly improved and brought to productiveness in the usual crops of the section, hay, potatoes and cattle being his chief reliance. It must not be supposed that his life has been all sunshine and free from danger and disaster. He was in all the troubles at Julesburg and along the Platte river in the early sixties; and while in partnership with Jesse Moore in keeping up the roads, had numerous encounters with the Indians, in which one of his men was killed and several were wounded. He was married on February 28, 1867, to Miss Sarah Jane Jones, a native of Buchanan county, Missouri, and the daughter of John and Annie Jones, both born and reared in Tennessee. They were among the earliest settlers in that part of Missouri in which they lived, and there, redeeming a good farm from the wilderness and defending it from savage fury, they grew to prosperity and prominence. The father supported the Democratic party on all questions of public policy, and was a member of the Masonic order and the Methodist church. Seven children were born to them, one dying in infancy. The six living are William, James, Mary K. (Mrs. Robert Dietz), John and Nathaniel, all residing in Buchanan county, Missouri; and Mrs. Bowles, who is the second in numerical order of the six. The father died on September 29, 1901. Mr. and Mrs. Bowles have had eight children, of whom a son named John W. is deceased. The seven living are: Robert F., of Canon Creek, Colorado; Alcinda wife of Denver R. Van de Venter, of near Carbondale; James, of the Elk Creek region; Mary, wife of Olaf Johnson, of near Glenwood Springs; Samuel, Grafton and Effie Jane. Mr. Bowles has found Colorado much to his taste as a place of residence, a fruitful country in good opportunities, and settled by a people appreciative of ability and force of character; and is well pleased to be numbered among the productive energies which are making it one of the greatest states of the great West. He is highly esteemed as a business man and good citizen.

(B43) Ralph C. (b. 30 APR 1827 Maryland d. 01 DEC 1911 Roscoe, St. Clair, Missouri) married(04 MAY 1858 La Crosse, Michigan) to Emma Eastman (b. 14 APR 1823 Fitchville, Huron Co, Ohio d. 07 FEB 1905 McGregor, Iowa). Ralph was husband number five out of nine and was helping her out in some of her property disputes with her previous husband's family. Emma filed for divorce on 02 DEC 1859 based on a letter written by Ralph. There was some question as to the legitimacy of the marriage in the first place and no record of the divorce being granted has been found. Attached to the end of this tree are typewritten copies of the letter, Ralph's biography, and obituary. Ralph then married (09 SEPT 1860) to Elizabeth Brashears (b. ???? d. 1882 Missouri) who was the daughter of Gilbert Deer and the widow of Waymack Brashears. Elizabeth had a son from her previous marriage named James. Ralph and Elizabeth had five children:

After Elizabeth died in 1882, Ralph married(1884) to Eliza Hill (b. 04 AUG 1836 Howard Co, MO d. 14 JAN 1913). Eliza was the daughter of Wright Hill from Tennesee and a Frances ????? from Virginia. Eliza was married before to a man with the last name of Hill. It is believed that she had a son from that marriage by the name of L.E. Brown. The informant on her death certificate in 1918 is L.E. Brown. In addition, there is a L.E. Brown who died in the 1918 flu epidemic along with his children who are buried in Bozeman, MT.

--- RALPH C. BOWLES, county surveyor, was born April 30, 1827, in the southern part of Maine. His father, John C. Bowles, was born January 1, 1800, and received an academic education. He early united with the Baptist Church and about the year 1820 commenced preaching. His ministerial duties calling him into New York state, he there met Miss Phoebe Wilson, to whom he was married September 4, 1825. She was a daughter of Captain Wilson, of revolutionary fame, a well known man who died at the Battle of Bridgewater, while in defense of his country. During the next year Mr. Bowles was actively engaged in preaching the gospel and in the following spring his son, Ralph, was born. It was the father's wish that his boy should become a minister and with that end in view Ralph was placed first in the public schools and later in Springdale Academy, and having during the meantime gone to Michigan, he entered the State University at Ann Arbor. Tiring of so close application he left that institution, but subsequently again became a student therein, this time for the purpose of qualifying himself for a civil engineer and land survevor. By great perseverance and hard study he made rapid progress, graduating in June, 1847, first in his class though but a little over twenty years old. He soon entered the employ of the government as a surveyor, and under this engagement visited Green Bay, Forts Sullivan and Mankato, and other points on the Upper Mississippi. He continued this calling until the year 1859 then locating in this county. In 1860 Mr. B. was married to Mrs. Elizabeth Brashears, widow of Waymack Brashears, and daughter of Gilbert Deer. To them have been born five children: John C., Anna F., Jessie A., Ervin T. and R. E. During the war Mr. Bowles enlisted in the Eighth Regiment, Missouri Volunteers, Colonel McClurg commanding, and was soon transferred to the position of topographical engineer. In 1872 he was nominated by his party and elected to the position of county surveyor. Politically he is a Democrat. He resides on section 18.
Note: Green Bay, WI; Fort Sullivan, WI, and Mankato, MN are all located in the vicinity of La Crosse, WI.
Obituary: St. Clair County Democrat, December 7, 1911, Osceola, Missouri] Ralph C. Bowles
Ralph C. Bowles died at his home in Roscoe on Friday last, aged 89 years. He was born in Maryland, but his family removed to Michigan in 1828, when he was 6 years of age. At the breaking out of the civil war Mr. Bowles enlisted in the Federal army. He had previously removed to St. Clair county, when he married Mrs. Elizabeth Breashears. To this union five children were born, four of whom servive [sic] him—J.C. and E. T. Bowles, Mrs. Anna Burch and Mrs. Rule Slavens, all of Bozeman, Mont. After the death of his wife, which occurred in 1882, he was married in 1884 to Mrs. Eliza Brown, who survives him. Mr. Bowles was a civil engineer by profession and it was while he occupied the office of county surveyor that he superintended the erection of the Osceloa bridge.
Although the son of a Baptist preacher, Mr. Bowles rejected the christian religion, and died an agnostic. He, however, made peace with his children before the end. The remains were interred at Pleasant Springs amid a large concourse of sorrowing relatives and friends, Sergeant Pellett of the Salvation Army pronouncing the eulogy.

Excerpt—Emma Bowles vs. Ralph C. Bowles
Filed 1/20—1860 --- County Court of Lax--Lyndes & Losey for Plaintif Bowles Married 5/4 – 1858 –defendant has been a resident of State for 14 years
Defendant has treated P.tf in a cruel & inhuman manner, struck & beat her. Quotes letter from Bowles 9/30 – 1859 to E. B. at Pleasantville Mo “and I will be damned before I will ever live a day with you again. I endured from you mortification & abuse enuf to shame a nigger. You are a regular dammed prostitute & whore and there can be nothing else made of you and you are the damnedest liar I ever knew, no confidence placed in you nohow. Here are a few reasons. I have plenty more. You was always harping on what you had & that I had nothing; you figured to always keep me a damned nigger for you & yours & I might go to hell or the poor house when you was done with me. Now all I have to say is you may kiss my ass, you damned old bitch. I have plenty money of my own & making plenty to do me plenty for one, but not enough for two. I expect to be in this fix. I know that you are not strictly legally my wife & might be snailed for what I have had to do with you if I was to come into Wisconsin, but I will never come there & I know that nothing nor nobody can take me from here there. You wrote another damned lie saying that I passed for a single man. There are persons here that knew me in Michigan & Lax. I pass for just what I am & ask no favor of anyone. Now just let me give you a bit of advice, you stay where you are. I will not live with you or have anything to do with you but if your damned malicious, mischief making disposition will not allow you to let me alone you just say your prayers & settle your affairs, for I hope to be eternally damned if I don’t kill you. God damn you, you are nothing but a nuisance & torment to yourself and everyone else. I left you once, I will not run from you & your damned lying hypocrisy will not save you. Now as you know how I keep my word, you know what to depend on & do not think I wish to frighten you, but I wish you to mind your own business or take the consequences.
I know that you & I cannot both live in the same country & when you get after me your God damned shenanigans & shives(?) will not save you. I would sooner black myself & be a nigger than live in the same country with you. I have enjoyed my liberty too long to come under your yoke again.
I can see by the post mark on your envelope that you are down to Galena & running around on a bulling whoreing expedition maybe building another Boyer Baby. O get lost you God Damned old she devil, I can hardly keep from hunting you up & killing you the first sight.
You ought to be hung but it would be a mean trick to nasty a clean rope with you.”
Plaintiff further shows that she has always conducted herself since her marriage with the said defendant in a modest and discreet manner & that she has been true to said husband & treated him as a wife should a husband &c&c&c asks to be released from the bonds of matrimony &c&c
Sworn to Dec 2nd – 1859

He owns about 800 acres of land, and in 1874 built the finest residence in Orange County. His marriage with Miss Lizzie Andrews of Fredericksburg, Ind., was solemnized September 25, 1861, and to their union two children have been born, named William T. and James A. JOHN H. BOWLES, dealer in drugs and jewelry at Orleans, Ind., was born near French Lick Springs in Orange County, October 8, 1836. He is a son of Thomas C. and Ann (Patton) Bowles, who were among the early settlers of the county. Thomas C. purchased the land upon which the springs are situated, from the Government, but afterward sold it to his brother and moved to Washington County, engaging in the mercantile trade until his death in 1840. His wife survived him until 1862. John H. Bowles enjoyed the usual advantages afforded by the common schools of the country and worked upon a farm until 1865. In that year he began the drug business as a partner of his brother, Dr. L. S. Bowles, at Paoli. This he continued for five years, when on account of failing health he sold out and took an extended trip through the South, much to his benefit. In 1872 he located at Orleans (Orleans Township) and engaged in his present business, continuing it ever since with good success. Kittie, a daughter of James and Ann (Campbell) Fields, became his wife February 17, 1873. Mr. Bowles is one of the enterprising men of Orleans and as a Democrat usually takes a lively interest in the welfare of his town.
