I am looking for information on William Swancy Bowles who was my great great grandfather. I believe Chief Bowles was his grandfather or great grandfather, but I cannot find the connection. Do you have any information on William Swancy Bowles. He went by Swancy or sometimes it is spelled Swancey. Thank you for any information that you can give me. He married Mary Fulton who is related to Robert Fulton the inventor of the steamboat. Their daughter was Nancy Bowles and she married James Angell. Martha Angell Schwegman

Much of this, down to 113 harriet bowles, has been documented fairly well, especially by the DAR and a booklet about the bowles family that was self-published. Plus a small biography by Joseph M Bowles, b 1817.

and there are the very extensive records of the bowles line and DNA connections at:

http://www.ancestors-genealogy.com/bowles/bowlesdna/47583.ht...

Re: John William Bowles Family History Needed

I am looking for info on a Roy Bowles from WV and am wondering if the Roy I am looking for is the one listed in your thread. I am not related to the Bowles family. However, I have been working on a historical project centered around a diary that my grandmother kept in 1931. She and a companion met a Roy Bowles and his friend Earl Stone at Yellowstone park that year and travelled with them for a few days. It appears that Roy and Earl were headed for Pikes Peak in Colorado. The only info that I have is that these gentlemen were from WV, driving a Ford Roadster, and in their 20's in 1931. I have several photos that I could forward for identification. Any background info that I can obtain would be helpful.

Teri Underhill
pleebie@yahoo.com

OBIT William E. Bowles

This is a long one. I found this clipping among some family papers. There is no date or name of the newpaper. He is my great-uncle and he died in Park City, Stillwater, Montana. Headline: "Billy Bowles Dies Suddenly." On Tuesday morning William Bowles was found dead in his bed by his step-daughter who went to arouse him upon his failure to appear at the usual time. Death occurred sometime during the night from heart failure evidently while he was asleep. The day previous Mr. Bowles appeared to be in his best health and put in a busy day, driving to Laurel in company with Chris Edman in the forenoon and in the late afternoon deceased helped Mr. Edman haul and unload a load of hay. At night he retired at his usual time and apparently health, and if anything different, in perhaps better spirits. He was in his 66th year.

For upwards of ten years William Bowles has been a resident of Park City, coming here with his wife and stepdaughter from near Billings where for a number of years he had owned and farmed a small tract of land. He had always been a hard and faithful worker as well as a prudent saver, and to these excellent traits he and his family numbered among the well-to-do people. As a professional gardener he had but few peers throughout this locality. Since coming to Park City he specialized in strawberries, from these and other garden truck which he produced from half a block of townsite ground he sold enough produce to keep him and his household without having to draw materially on earlier savings. He was a good neighbor, honest, law-abiding and homely man. He cared nothing for modern show or pomp, but at the same time approved of clean amusements and community betterments.

William E. Bowles was born in New York state, April 21, 1858. In the year 1888 he came to Park City where he farmed for a number of years; later he purchased a suburban farm at Billings. On April 18, 1905, he was married to Mrs. Marguerite Bowles, who died November 11, 1922. In 1915 he sold his Billings holdings and moved back to Park City where he has since resided. He is survived by a step-daughter, Effie; one brother, James A. Bowles of Roseville, Cal., and one sister, Mrs. Viola Haskins of Egg Harbor, Wis.
Funeral services were held Thursday afternoon at the Methodist church with Rev. E. D. Swisher of Laurel officiating. Interment was made in the Park City cemetery, the remains be laid beside those of the wife.

The information I have found shows Powhatten Bowles was born in 1811, but his mother Mary Shipp Bowles died in 1807. My informatin shows Powhatten is the son of Mary and Walka Horse. Mary was married to Hughes Bowles and all her other children were by Hughes except Powhatten. Hughes died in abt 1806.

Since so many of the boundries of counties and such have changed over the years, try checking the rolls in Cherokee N.C./ Eastern Band of Cherokee-- to see if any of Chief Bowls decendents are listed there. John Bowles died before the Dawes rolls were taking in Indian territory which is now Oklahoma, and the ones on the rolls had to be living on Indian land at the time.... Hope this helps..
I originally posted that message in 2002. A few years later and a lot of research later, I cannot find any factual links to the Valentine Bowles line. I no longer have Valentine's line linked in by database. Sorry.

Jim

I saw your message regarding Oscar Pickney Bowles, and that name has been driving me crazy. I am a desc. of John Bowles, the famous Texas Indian Fighter, Jefferson Townsend, of Bell Co. Tx. Since I was researching the Towmsend/Bowles connection. The name of Oscar pickney Bowles popped up on some land papers as a child, his guardian was Robert Goode. I sure would like to place him and get him out of my records. Any idea who was the father of James L.
Thanks!
Minia (Townsend) Bates
minabat@aol.com

Several years ago I was researching BOWLES/TOWNSEND in Texas.
I ran across the names of Oscar Pickney James Bowles listed on some land records in Bell Co. Tx., that was attached to my great Grandfathers name. I am related to the famous Texas Indian Fighter, John Bowles, these two names I could't place in the family. Around 1860+ a Robert Goode was names as their guardian on some papers.
Could this be the one you're looking for, If so contact me.
Minia (Townsend) Bates
minabat@aol.com

Oh, my goodness! This has all been so interesting. I just mentioned any ancestry to the librarian here at the Alexandria, LA VAMC and she began a search for me. She also is of Indian (Shawnee) heritage, but more so than I. Years ago in Junior High, I did a report on chief Bowles and there was little information to be found unless I suppose one had access to the archives.
The third female is Barbara Ann, my mother who was better known as "Ann" when she was younger. She has been living in South Texas for fifteen years as well as her brother, Thomas Edward Lewis and his wife, Carol, of 54-55 years. Fredna paseed away about 6-7 years ago. Mary Jane resides near Washington, D.C. in Virginia. I grew up in Tyler from about 1960 to 1975. I knew granmother had a large family and I vaguely recall a family reunion when I was about 12 or 13. The youngest sister, Aunt Bea, had moved to Tyler and remained there until she passed. In one of these posts, someone has posted some old drawings. There is one charcoal portrait that I can almost imagine a younger version of Rilla; however, I have yet to make the connection. I don't get to check in very often, but hope to chat with you more. slccrazynurse@yahoo.com.

Eldridge W Bowles of Clinton County Indiana was killed July 30, 1945, in the South Pacific during World War II. He is officially listed as missing or buried at sea. His name appears on the “Tablets of the Missing” at the Manila American Cemetery in the Philippines. We are seeking information regarding his military and civilian life.

I am a retired Hoosier from Madison County residing in the Philippines with my Filipino wife. We are seeking family and military information about servicemen from your county killed in the South Pacific during World War II. There are 17,206 Americans buried here and thousands more that are missing or buried at sea and are honored on the “Tablets of the Missing”. Please visit our website to see the beautiful memorial located in Manila, Philippines.

http://fizkid.tripod.com/

My wife and I visited the cemetery as visitors and left with a mission in our heart. We have been taking photographs of the graves of the Indiana servicemen buried here and have been uniting them (at no charge) with their family members in Indiana and across the United States. To receive the photo of your family member, neighbor or friend all you need is a working email address. We do not send them to regular mailing addresses due to the costs. Please help us find the families of the men that might still be living. Our project is only successful because of teamwork and your contributions are noted on our website. If you wish to help us we will be pleased to add your name to our ACKNOWLEDGMENT page on the website. The obituaries usually did not appear till to three months after the death date.

If you are not a genealogist you can help by just picking up the telephone directory and find someone with the same last name and give them a call. It has worked many times for us.

Zenas5@yahoo.com

Sincerely,

Dave and Apple Dwiggins
San Pablo City, Philippines

Richard Bowles b. abt 1818 England

Hello, I havent posted my searches in a while so I amposting again in hopes that some Bowles from England will see this! .........Richard Bowles aka. Rich'd Bowls born abt 1818 in England and married abt 1843 Diana (nee Smith?) Bowles. She was born perhaps 1809. Oldest son William born in France and registered at British Embassy in 1845. Next son George Bowles born in England 1852 or 1854. They came to America 1855-1860. No ship papers found yet. George is my ggrandfather and married Mary Saxton in New London Village Ohio.Divorced. George married Ida May Rogers of Huron Co. Ohio and gave birth to Otto ,Lena and Harley Bowles also spelled Boales by this time. Harley, my grandfather born 1902 married Vera Mae Strickling of VA./Ohio Stricklings. There children were Robert, Donald and Betty Bowles. ..... I am searching for other Bowles relatives and am keenly interested in finding the UK origins. Family legend says these Bowles's were from Wales. Any help will be apreciated and I can be more specific with the details that I have. Thank you. Randi Bowles- Meentzen

I am looking for information on my ggggrandmother's family . Her name was Aloysia Louisa Bowles b. 1811 she married William Murphy Sr. 10/13/1827 . Her parents were Joseph Bowles and Aloysia or Alice "Alley" Raley they married 5/22/1804 . I think Alley died around 1814-1815 because Joseph married Elizabeth Johnston 11/25/1816 . They had 7 children . I think Joseph's father was William who married Mary Cecil . William's father was John who married Monica Wooten . John's father was William who married Elizabeth Gough . William's father was George who married Lillias Watson . George's father was Valentine and Valentine had 4 son's John,George,Anthony and Tobias . That's where I'm stuck I have no information on Valentine . Can anyone help me?
Thanks so much , Rita
