My grandmother was born Oma Bowling, her brother was Elmo (who I think was KIA in the Korean Conflict). She married Clarence Carnahan (whose mother was a Hensley). I had Oma's family bible, but my ex-wife kept it during the divorce and swears it doesn't exist. I recognize the other names mentioned in this thread. They are very close connection to each other. The bible had the answer to some of these questions. I had traced some of the Carnahan's back to 1776-78 (Patrick) direct from Ireland. And the migration to eastern KY. I was specifically interested in Elmo and his military records if anyone has more detailed information.

Doug Barton

My Grandfather is William Virgil Bowling. b 1903 Greenup KY. (married Myrtle Frances Stitt) No male descendants for DNA testing from him or his father William Oscar Bowling (that I know of).

Maybe some living males with Bowling name from Thomas Jarret Bowling (William Virgil Bowlings grandfather and my great great grandfather) lineage - I am not sure.

Is it worth it for me to locate a DNA candidate? especially to learn/help with information of "famous" Bowling relatives (Pocahontas, etc).

I am also looking for WIlliam Virgil Bowling military history. He had a tattoo (cant remember it exactly) and spoke of war when I was young, but I cant find info from GOV or from Merchant Marines.

Thank you.

William Higginbotham Bowling vitals correction

Hello everyone I'm going through my online tree and found what seems to be an error. William died May 19, 1916 in Bristol County,TN. I was looking for Virginia Brooks parents when I found this error. I have a full pdf file going back to George Bowling who might be the grandfather of Benjamin Bowling Sr. born 1704 who is my direct descendant. I cut and pasted this from the pdf :

That Joseph is the father of Benjamin is an assumption, but an assumption that is based on a preponderance of the
information. Benjamin Bowling of Stafford County, Virginia, in time and place is the only Benjamin who could have been the
son of Joseph. When James O. Bowling, Box 252, Ash Grove, MO 65604, (he died in 1993) asked his grandfather of the
connection between Benjamin, Joseph and George, the grandfather said there was a Samuel there too. In the St Paul's
Parish of that period we find a Samuel who married Elizabeth Oxford.

Below is a website that has part of the same pdf starting with Benjamin Bowling Sr. Born 1704.

http://familytreemaker.genealogy.com/users/b/o/w/Randal-G-Bo...

Could anyone help me with John Bowling's (b. 1790 VA) family?
Wife Sarah Sally Henson ? b. TN ? and children. One of their children is James S. Bowling b. 30 Apr 1835 KY).
They lived in and around Clay Co. KY.

James S. Bowling's (b. 30 Apr 1835 KY) daughter Mary Jane Bowling (b. 15 Mar 1854 KY). Mary Jane Married Solomon Hensley (b. 14 Mar 1857 KY). They moved to Madison Co. AR where they died. I am thinking they both died near St. Paul, Madison Co. Does anyone know when they died and where they are buried? Also, did Mary Jane and Solomon Hensley have children?
Do not confuse this Mary Jane Bowling with some out there referring to her as Mary Jane "Mahala" Bowling. I have never heard her called "Mahala".

Bill Hibbard, OKC

William Oscar Bowling Death cert - wrong mother?

I sent away for William Oscar Bowling's death cert. B MAR 29, 1877 in Carter KY to Thomas Jarret Bowling and (I thought - and still do) Mary Willis Grizzell. Died Feb 1972 Ohio.

However the Ohio death cert lists Mary Dillon as the mother. I have Mary Dillon as Thomas Jarrets' mother and William Oscars grandmother. Is it possible the informant was wrong? Most of the cert info is typed, but the parents names are written in same handwriting/ink as the funeral directors signature. Maybe he just made a quick call to finish filing out the form?

I am currently trying to get contact info for Grayson Memorial Gardens cemetery to see if they have more info.

Any ever run into an similar error?

I am searching for information on Thomas Lavender who married Frances L. Bowling. They were married in Spotsylvania County, Virginia in 1825. Frances was born abt. 1805 and Thomas abt. 1800 in Virginia. The family moved to Harrison Co., Indiana abt. 1833. They are in the 1850 Harrison County, IN census and in 1870 they are in Hardin Co., IL. They had the following children: Sarah A. (married John Howe), Harriet, Hester A. (married Charles A. Deweese), Angeline, Lucinda T. (married James Simms), Joshua, Mary Jane, Daniel L., Benjamin L. and James J. Lavender. My ggg-grandmother is Hester A. who married Charles A. Deweese. I have seen entries that say the parents of Frances L. Bowling are Thomas Bowling and Sarah Ford. I also find several Bowling families in the 1850 and 1870 Harrison County, IN census records. I would love to have any information on the Lavender and Bowling families.

Thomas Bowling/Borland from England with Michigan descendants

My Bowling background is not from the south like most, but rather the north. Thomas Bowling came from England and settled in Michigan. His wife, Rosaly (Painter?) was possibly from Germany. Thier son George Bowling married Annie Swartz and they in turn had a son named Nelson Bowling. The Bowling named went through a evolution beginning, I believe, as Borland then went to Bowland, Bowlin and finally Bowling. Nelson Bowling had seven brothers and sisters and if anybody has anymore information beyond Thomas Bowling/Borland I would be very interested.

Also,I have another copy of an old letter, from a John Calvin Bowling, from K.Y. In the letter, he states a daughter, of Nancy Alcot Boling Sanders, Jane Sanders Quisenberry, also stated that her grandfather, James Thomas Boling came from England. Thow, she may have been speeking of her g grandfather, whom's name was also James Thomas. Also in the letter, it says that Jesse Hiram Boling (whom is a son of James Thomas Bolling 1773-1838)stated that it was James Sr. that came from England.
Does any one know about this whole England thing? It is mentioned in my family bible a few times so, I dont want to just throw it under the rug.

James Thomas Bowling/ Bolling etc. b.1773, d.1838 and father from England, James Sr.

The information that I have on James Thomas Bowling Sr. comes from information that my father obtained from Conrad Lucien Bowling(1864-1947)and his own research.
The information states that James Boling came from England after having trouble with his brothers over the settling of his fathers esstate. The eldest getting the estate. He was father of at least 2 sons: James and John.
I also have a copy of a letter written by: J.C. Boling, dated 7/30/1929 that states that Jesse Boling (whom is the son of James Thomas Bolling Jr.)stated that James Thomas Bowling Sr. came from England, settled in Virginia, then moved to Green Co., Ky. in 1850. The letter also states that James Jr. and John (brothers) in 1820 moved to Washington Co. then, James Bolling Jr.(the oldest) moved to Rush Co., Indiana. He died in 1838. I have a copy of his Will and a photograph of his grave stone. James Thomas Bolling Jr. (1773-1838)was married atleast twice. 1st m. Nancy Anne Ellicock then, Hester Seals Voiles/Voyles.
It has been said, and even in some famiy trees that we are of the (red) Bowling's that come from Pocahontas. If the information that has been handed down to me is correct well, it seems unlikly.
Would love to hear from any one from this Bowling line or any one that may have helpful information.

Bowlings from Bowling Green, Ky

Hello, my name is Joshua Anderson. My Great Great Grandfather was Stephen Bowling (1822-1925). He was born near present day Bowling Green, Ky to John and Edith Milligan Bowling. The family relocated to Roane County, TN sometime in the 1820's-1830's. Stephen also had brothers named Hugh and Thomas, and sisters named Margaret, Celia, and Ann all born prior to 1850. Stephen married Marthe E. Millican, daughter of Julius and Malinda Millican, 19 July, 1856 in Roane County. Their children were: John,Samuel,Rosencrans,Stephen,William(my great grandfather),James,Magnolia, and Mary. I would love to hear from anyone connected to this family. I am trying to find more of Stephens' descendants and if possible, trace his parents ancestry further back. My email address is jander12@utk.edu

thanks,

Josh Anderson

Thomas Bowling, son of James, born c. 1864

Thomas Bowling was my great grandfather. He died in 1900 aged 36 in Silvertown, West Ham, London. He married Alice Gibbs in 1892, at the age of 28, in Holborn. They had 3 children - Alice, Caroline and Thomas. This gives his birth date as circa 1864. I have been unable to trace a birth certificate or find him on any census. His father was a fisherman, James Bowling, deceased before 1892. Any information or leads greatfully received.

I have obtained a little more information re:
my grandmother's family. My aunt says
generations back a long time ago my
grandmother's family came from Indiana
in a covered wagon. Does anyone have a connection to the
state of Indiana and I think she said
something about Bowling Green? I'm not familiar with
where it is?

On my mothers' side of the tree I am related to the Bowlings. They are holding a reunion in Buckhorn Lake the first weekend of October in '2000. You could call to be sure of date. My direct descendant (Benjamin Bowling) his brother founded Bowlingtown which was moved to make the Buckhorn State Park in KY. Even the cemetary was moved.
My grandfather ended up settling in Southern Indiana after much moving around- I still have family in Fla.- of which I have never met. His name was Lester and he married Eula Root whos' family started up Roots Branch near Bush, KY. Both of their families were from the KY area - one from Corbin Co. and one from Laurel Co.

Bowling Burials in Fern Hill Cemetery, Daviess Co. Ky.

I am still working on finding who all was buried in Fern Hill Cemetery.

Although I have not posted an updated list for the cemetery on Rootsweb Cemetery site yet, my list has rose from the 58 burials I do have posted on Rootsweb to 115 burials now.

I'm hoping since the Daviess County Library [Kentucky] has posted old obituaries on their web site, that people searching their Ancestors and finding them in the old obituaries, will contact me with anyone they find buried in Fern Hill or Parson's Cemetery.

If you feel you may have someone buried there, contact me and I will check my list for your Ancestor.

My purpose for doing this is because there are no records for this Cemetery and I hope to document it for the Kentucky Historical Society and for Daviess County Records.

New homes are being built very close to this cemetery, and I am worried after all these years of being 'hidden' in the woods & hills, it will be vandelized as more people move into close proximity of it.

Anyone wishing to help with this endevor [documentation & cleaning up and protecting the cemetery] can contact me.

Judy Bailey

Bowling of Letcher co. Ky

Hi Deanna;
I constantly watch the message board for info regarding my family. I recently started mysearch as we had no family history past our grandparents. Hoping that you have some records that may help.
I'll start with my paternal grandfather; he was William Pierson Bowling, Born Pierson William Bowling in1877 at Knott co. va. Lived in Wise co for long period. He apparently married a Sarah Hughes the first time in va., Then Hattie Walters( my grandmother).
His Father, according to WP's marriage license was Elijah S. Bowlling from Wise co va, and was born 1854. Elijah died 1934 at Letcher co. Ky. According to his death cert. His father was Sam Bowling.
That is all I have, We think that he was connected to Bowling brothers of Va, but cannot find the link.
Apparently Dad had heard the same story as everyone else that he was connected to Pochahontas. no records. Would love to find a connection.
Back to our grandfather, the only brothers that we can find is an Andy and a Liege.
If you have any info that may lead us toward the right path, I would so greatly appreciate it.
Thanks Connie Bowling Rice

English Bowling Australian Bowling

There sure is a lot of American Bowlings. I was born in England, Middlesex actually, my Father had six Brothers & two Sisters. I know Thomas & Charles came to Australia, Arthur was killed in the 2nd World War. My Granddad was born on Henley on the Thames and was married three times. The second marriage was to Beatrice Waterfall who was my Grandmother. To my knowledge most of Granddads family seem to have come from Henley on the Thames but I'll be blowed if I can find them. I have found a Henry Bowling married to a Sarah who was my Granddads Brother. Is there anyone who can help.
