I did some further searching and I conclude that the following is the same John Cranfill/Cranfield:
J Crankfield 39 "cant read as in other census's"
Gideon 19
Martha 17
Jesse 15
James 12
Lucy 10
Jonathan 7 "this matches 1850 census Jonathan is 17"
John H 3 "this matches 1850 census John H is 14"

It would appear that John's first wife & mother of these children must have died prior to this census of 1850. And then by 1860 John has remarried to Elizabeth. Spelling really doesnt matter much between Boles/Bowles/Bowls, just like in the Cranfill/Cranfield/Crankfield.

I found them in 1860 as well, I believe in Clarksville, Davie Co., NC. Wife Elizabeth is the same as in 1870 and daughter Lida J (Lydia J) was 10 in 1870, and she is 5/12 months in 1860, so it must be them. It appears that they moved from Clarksville to Hamptonville, NC, a move of about 30 miles. Without further research at the moment, I am guessing he is related to one of Clarksville, Davie Co. Cranfill/Cranfield families. I'm still guessing as to which one though.
Hi,

I just got a copy of my great great grandfather's death certificate. His name is Thomas Vance Cranfill, who died in 1917. The name of his father is listed as simply John Cranfill...and his mother is listed as Elizabeth Boles. My great grandfather is Harvey Lee Cranfill, Sr.

I saw the marriage record of John and Elizabeth...which indicates her name spelled Bowls, instead of Boles.

I found Elizabeth and John on the 1870, 1880 and Elizabeth only on the 1900 Federal Census record. All were in Yadkin County, Deep Creek Township. Having trouble finding more on either of them.

If you find something..would appreciate the share.

Thanks- Alan

Mr g-grandmother was listed as Grace Bowls in the 1900 Fayette Co. IL census. She is listed in the home of her stepfather. Her mother had already died. Grace was born in 1885-one known sister-Kitturah (Kitty). They were both born in IL. Her spelling may have been Bowles-as my family believes. He father was Lewis S. Bowls/Bowles, b. 1860 IL, the baby of his large family. His father was Samuel, b. circa 1810 VA. Any connection? Thanks

I am looking specifically on information on Dolphus Suttony Bowls, b. April 1845 in NC, married to Amanda Leslie, b. Jan. 1845 in TN or MS. I have some information on the families, such as his parents and their children, but nothing on Amanda or her family. Also, nothing except birth and death on Dolphus' mother, Rebecca P. Any information would be appreciated. Thank you in advance!! Gini
