Thank you for your query but all my BOWN family were born in Wisbech,Cambridgeshire,England. There is a William BOWN b 1825 who became a Mormon and at age 25 he sailed for America and Utah. If you search the www.familysearch.org you will find heaps there or just type his name and 1825 into Google and you'll find all the info you want.
Jean

Bown family - Devon

Does anyone know of these siblings and who their parents were? Charles, Sarah Ann, Harriet Gertrude, Herbert Thomas, Frederick, Joseph Henry BOWN. Harriet lived at Trerice Farm, Newquay with husband Tom Batten...they brought up my grandfather William (ten aged 6), his brother Richard (11) and sister Katie (9) when the children's mother (Sarah Ann) and her husband Richard James Batten (no relation to Tom Batten above)were killed in a slag slide in Russell Gulch, Colorado USA. Harriet and Tom had a son William Batten (same name as my grandfather's) - all very confusing!

More on James Bown, born 1823 in England. He came to Canada near Hamilton, Ontario about 1841 with his family. I would like to know his parents' names and where in England they were from.

James moved to Rochester, Monroe, New York about 1840 then on to Pittsburgh about 1841 or perhaps as late as 1844.

James had a brother, William, who lived in New Castle, Lawrence, Pennsylvania. William owned a Bakery in the Pearson Building on Washington Street (now a different named street). William MAY be William E. Bown in Pittsburgh in 1850, baker, b. abt 1813. He MAY be William Bowan in Lawrence County Census (New Castle, PA?) b. about 1814.

James Bown married Maria Bailey, also of England b. abt 1826 or 27, in Pittsburgh in 1846.

James Bown and Maria Bailey's children were (3 sons, 3 daughters):

William H. b. abt 1852
Clara b. abt 1858
Ann M. b. abt 1860
Alice b. abt 1861
James b. abt 1861
Son b. ?

One of the daughters of his brother, William, married Socrates McConnell and lived in New Castle, Pennsylvania PA.

Bown families in Wisconsin

In need of any information on the Bown families in Wisconsin - particularly, William S. Bown born in New York 1817. He married Lemma Ann Cruson of Ohio. They married in Indiana 1844 and had 5 or 6 children: Sarepta R., Phoebe A., John M., William S., and George H. and possibly a Charles A. My line follows John Madison Bown, however, I am stuck with William S. Bown, Sr. - who are his parents and how did they come to America?

All help on this is appreciated. Thanks.

The mothers maiden name was Harrison.
Hope this is to some use for you.

Walter R., Harriet R. and Edwin Theodore who lived in London at the time of Samuel's death in 1836. Walter and Edwin are listed as born in Islington, and the others outside London. All went to Brantford, Ontario, Canada in 1843 except Samuel who went to the Chicago area.

The Times, Wednesday, Sep 02, 1840, contained an advertisement for sale of the stock of Messrs. The one who went to Bloomington, Illinois instead was Samuel Hasell Bown. According to the 1850 census of Bloomington, he was born about 1828. He died in or near Chicago about 1856. His wife (I have no record of the marriage) Mary (nee Russell !?) was the widow of Samuel Bown (1802-1856) by whom she had 8 children living, joined him in 1843.
Hello James

Thanks for getting in touch. Your post has already answered a few of my questions. Do you know how old Ernest was when he died? Also, do you know what he did at the Steelworks?

I would consider it an honour if I could display the photo of Ernest on my website.

You can contact me direct via my website if you wish

http://www.stannington.webitsmart.co.uk/

Kind Regards

Robert.

Re: Joseph Bown

I have found out quite a bit about his parents, siblings, and family who came from England and there is quite a bit about the English family that is available and some I need to sort through from dozens of emails from very responsive and helpful Bowns who still live in England, from last month.

His parents were David Bown and Sarah Ann (Lea) Bown, both born in England. This was David's second marriage and Sarah's first. She was about 18 when they married.

They came to US about 1836 and lived in Pittsburgh. I am trying to get a copy of his naturalization in 1838 from Western Pennsylvania .... something society.

David and his brother, Benjamin, can be found in Anti Slavery Society records starting in the 1830s, especially Benjamin. There are other brothers and a sister who also came to Pittsburgh with families in the 1830s; Robert Bown, Ann Mary Bown Hughes, William Tytherleigh Bown, Jacob Bown, Benjamin Elborough Bown. 3 stayed in England: Theodosia, Daniel and Joseph.

David died in 1856 at age of 49. Lots of bakers in this family, back into England. Sarah then ran the bakery and Joseph helped for a while until he was widowed, then he seems to have left his girls with Sarah and headed west, possibly with a half brother, George. Sarah used to sell pies to Andrew Carnegie at a lunch counter when he only had "enough money for one pie".

Do you know the names of Benjamin and Eliza's girls? I have a census record but not sure how accurate it is.

I believe Benjamin remarried out west? Mary E? from census.
The wife's surname may be Legross or Legrosa or similar. This is the mother's surname as listed in the reg. of birth at Swindon for Ronald Bown in 1928.
Legross or Legrosa is also the mother's surname for other Bown children whose births are reg. at Swindon in 1926 and 1925, and at Stroud in 1923, 1920, 1917 and 1914.
There is a marriage of George E. Bown reg at Stroud in 1911, 4th quarter, but I do not yet know the wife's name. Contact me at mgb10012cam.ac.uk.

They lived at 23 Clyde Road, Heeley. Ethel, my mum, had no memory of her father, she being so young at the time of his death. She married Albert Cam in WW2 and had me, James in 1954. Ernest's great grandchildren are Andrew and Elizabeth (Liz) Cam. Liz saw Ernest's name on the Thiepval Memorial on a school trip. I have a photograph of Ernest in his uniform.

We do not know much about his father or any other relatives. My father and his brothers have different recollections from the family. A grandmother from Scotland and other relatives from England, not sure where to begin & get more information to trace my tree. Anyone out there has any info/idea/suggestion?
