Hello...my great grandfather was William Henry Bownes b 1870. His father was John R b about 1833. I believe John's grandfather was Theophilus Bownes b about 1778 in Connecticut.
If anybody has any connections with those names I would love to hear.
Also William Henry had many siblings...Ann, Frank, Moses, Sanford, James, Elizabeth, Sylvester and Edna.
And its probable that his uncle was also William Henry.

Hi there,

A Thomas Bownes is in my family tree, born 1833 in Ecclesall Bierlow. Dianah, Francis, Charles, Hannah and Elizabeth are his siblings. His parents were Isaac and Catherine, although I don't know Catherine's surname. My notes on Isaac are:
In 1851 lived in 139 Button Lane, Ecclesall Bierlow, Sheffield
http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/YKS/Misc/Transcriptions/WRY... - Isaac Bowns - Surgeons Instrument Maker, 139 Button Lane, Sheffield, 1852. Looked on http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~ridgeway/E..., births in Eckington. An Isaac Bownes was born to Isaac and Elizabeth on 23/2/1806, and another Isaac was born to John and Ann on 27/4/1803.

Hello

I've recently begun to search my (Bownes)family history, and have got back to the early 1800s in Crich, Derbyshire.

My direct family moved to Cheshire in the 1870s, where they ran a succession of shops and businesses. I have lots of photos and docs from this period to the present, which I'd be happy to share.

I'd be delighted to hear from anyone searching the Bownes family, but especially those with connections to Cheshire or Derbyshire.

David Bownes

Hi, my name is Gareth Bownes and I am from Bangor in Northern Ireland, now living in Birmingham, England. The origin of the family name is quite mysterious - the earliest I can trace back to are several Bowneses who originated from Ballymena, County Antrim, Northern Ireland in the 1880's, but I have no idea where they came from before then....

Any views/ information gratefully received!

Agree with you on Derbyshire. Looking for Bownes in Sheffield, Joshua Bownes born 1831 he says Sheffield on census but I wonder if it was Derbyshire, there being a little clutch of them in N. Derbyshire. Also think Bownes nothing to do with Bowness. No marriage found to daie. Wife Caroline, several children most of whom finished up in Wardsend Cemetery Sheffield. Any info wecome

Dear Diane

I am sorry for not responding quicker. You have probably found out this information by now, but here we go anyhow.

It would seem that the Bownes link to N. Ireland is an old one but largely spurious (from my point of view) based on name changes (Bown, Bowen, Bourne, Bowness etc..). Many Bownes links are found in Cumbria (Note Bowness, the town and probable origin of the name) but as far as I have been able to get back is about 1610 with the Bownes family in North Wingfield (Derbyshire). It would seem that (part of) the Bownes family lived there for many years prior, and may well have come from Cumbria, but I have not got definite proof of a link beyong Samuel Bownes, b 1610 in N. Wingfield.

Let me know how you are getting on.
Best Wishes
Colin Bownes

They married 1880 in London and had children born in the Woolwich area of London. Can not find them in the 1881 or 1891 census. Frederick worked in the naval docks. Later the family moved to Greenock in Scotland before WW 1 and worked in the naval docks as did most of the sons.
One of the boys was said to have moved to South Africa so I was wondering if there was a link.
