The family "Boydens" in Belgium has a "s" which the British and North American, Australian and New Zealand families do not have. Sometimes you will find the name spelled "Boydon" at least in the USA. The Boyden family as I was told by several in England when I first began searching the name, was Suffolk in origin. Even today more people with the surname Boyden are in the Suffolk area. It was also reported that the original Boyden family settled in Suffolk from France and the name was spelled Boudoin or similar spelling and was then anglized to Boyden. The first Boyden that I found that came to the American colonies was to Massachusetts about 1630. My grandfather Charles Fredrick Boyden came to the US shortly after the Civil War. He claims to have been born In Wiltshire son of James Boyden a British soldier and was out of Britain when he left England as a young man under 15 years of age. He said his mother was Sarah Sideler Boyden born in Scotland.

Gilmour Boyden

I am trying to trace a Gilmore or Gilmour Boyden. He was born around 1810 in the United States, possibly New York State. I have a record of him marrying Ann McLean in Perth, Lanark County, Ontario in 1844 and a census record of him owning 100 acres of land in Lanark Co. in 1851. He had a son Joseph (b 1841) who was living with his grandparents Hugh and Sarah McLean in 1851 in Lanark Co., ON. But that is where the trail ends. Joseph, his son, reappears married to Josephine Lud(d)ington of Fulton Co., New York and living in Ottawa, Ontario in 1871. Gilmore is my gggg-grandfather. There are connections between Gilmores and Boydens but I can't find him. Gilmore may not be his first name. Sorry for being so long-winded. I hope someone can help. Louise Boyden

According to "Thomas Boyden and His Descendants", Margaret McNutt was born March 7, 1789 (place not listed) and died Jan 16, 1867 in Willet, NY. She was married to John Green Boyden, a farmer on July 8, 1807. John was born January 5, 1787, probably in Newfane, VT. He died on September 14, 1873 in Willet, NY. They had at least 11 children (and a 12th adopted).

I have hand written letters and photos from the John Lewis Boyden (M Cornelia Claiborne Payne) family and son John Hanson Boyden. Without checking I have that he was born in Virginia, but that his father was from Vermont. I am not sure about this because, he went to Maryland before he died. Maybe he had folks in Maryland.

Christina, I've been out of the loop on genealogy for a bit, but found your letter. I don't see who you were writing to, so do you mind sharing a bit more of how you're related to the Graves and Boydens. If you were writing to me, I do apologize for not answering in a timely manner.
Neva

I am the daughter of a Boyden. I am interested in what information you have about the Boyden name. My line immigrated from England to Massachusettes in 1627ish, then to Vermont, then to Wisconsin, then to South Dakota, and then to Portland, OR. Very large family and very interesting. Please share what you have on the name and the Belgium family line.

I was in Belgium in 1953 when I learned about the "Boydens" family ntmae. Do you know if if the name is an Anglized French name or the family was begun by an immigrant from Britain? I have always had a keen interest in this name and it's origin in Belgium. I am not a French speaker.

I have family with the last name Boyden from New York as well. My grandmother was born in 1934 by the name Clara Boyden. Her father was William George Boyden Sr. born in 1908.
William George Boyden Sr. father was Joseph Boyden, born in 1878. Joseph Boyden's father was George Boyden, born in 1850 and George's father was James H. Boyden, born in 1827. I think that's where we may have a connection. I know that by 1880 James H. was residing in Queens New York City. All of my family from New York since that time have lived in New York City. I'm not sure where that branch came from before then. My tree has more information but maybe this could help you. I'm hoping to find farther back myself.

I know it has been a long time since your post, but I just came upon it.
I have in my family tree
James Boyden md: Mary Ann(maiden name unknown)/with daughter Julie. No dates for any of them.
His siblings are Dana,Beverly,Linda, Shirley, Diana (I have a birth date), Shanon, and Ronald.

They are children of Elvin Dana Boyden & Marian Huck.

Elvin's father was Dana Elvin Boyden, whos wife was Anice Unknown.

Going back another generation, Dana's parents were Alfred Boyden(1844-1922) and Mary Louden (1854-1944)

and yet another generation to Addison Boyden(1805 in Royalton VT.-1899) and Sophia Colvin(1804-1873) Could this be a reason for James middle name? I had no middle name>

If this could be the James you are looking for I probably have quite a bit of info for you and would be happy to share it. I have our direct line back to Thomas Boyden who came here in 1632

Hope to hear from you,
Rieta P Boyden
Mainesburg, Pa.

Does anyone have any information about Margaret McNutt born in New York who married a "Mister" Boyden? The Margaret I am looking for had the following sibblings: Andrew, John (b. abt 1776), Betsy, David, Isabel, Daniel and Alexander. I found a John Green Boyden, born 1787 in Vermont, and am wondering if they are connected. Thank you.
There is no definitive information on Thomas Boyden before 1634. We can only surmise that he was born about 1613. His age was listed as 21 on the ship Frances' passenger list. There was a fellow on another website claiming that he had some proof that Thomas and his family were of English descent and came from a town called Icklingham. Not sure where he would've come up with that. He cited no source information.

BOYDEN Family in New York

I'm hoping someone can help with my "brick wall" or otherwise help with my research on the Boyden Family in New York. I can trace my lineage back as far as the following family:

BRADFORD A. BOYDEN was born on 5 Jul 1824 in NY. He died on 13 Jun 1869. The cause of death was measles. He was buried in Heady's Corner Cemetery, Plymouth, NY (Chenango County). A photocopy of a book "A Little of Everything" by B. A. Boyden is passed through the family and states on the cover "Ithaca, NY 1844".

Bradford first married MARYETTE BRUCE. Maryette was born on 19 May 1828 in Cortland Co., NY. She died on 27 Jun 1863. She was buried in Heady's Corner Cemetery, Plymouth, NY.

They had the following children:

(1) BRUCE A. BOYDEN was born on 20 Sep 1846. He died on 4 Mar 1864 when a disease swept through his Civil War unit (only months after being married). He was buried in Heady's Corner Cemetery, Plymouth, NY.

Bruce married OLIVE L. BUTTON on 16 Jan 1864 in Preston, NY. Olive was born about 1846. She is listed in marriage records as being from Preston, NY.

In September of 1863, Bruce turned 17. On January 5, of 1864 he enrolled in
Plymouth, NY in Company G, 22nd Regiment of Cavalry, NY to serve 3 years. He was
married on January 16, 1864 and mustered into service on February 12, 1864 in
Rochester, NY. He died at St. Mary's Hospital, Rochester, NY on March 4, 1864 from "measles and disease induced [thirsty] by some reputed to be typhoid fever and other
inflammation of the lungs".

(2) ZANONI O. BOYDEN was born on 10 Dec 1847 in Plymouth, NY. He died on 2 Feb 1911 in Plymouth, Ny. The cause of death was "paralytic shock". He was buried on 5 Feb 1911 in Preston M. E. Church Officiated Burial at East Pharsalia.

Per his obituary, one sister married BURDETTE FRANKLIN of Pharsalia and one married
EDWARD STEWARD of Ulton, Greene County. It is not clear which of his other two sisters married Edward Steward.

Zanoni married (a) ESTELLA COY daughter of Samuel Allen Coy and Sarah Ann Champlin on 13 Mar 1872. Estella was born on 5 Jul 1855 in Smyrna, Chenango Cty, Ny. She died on 26 May 1891. She was buried in East Pharsalia Cemetery, Pharsalia, NY. Zanoni then married (b) ESTHER HALL on 4 Apr 1897 in Earlville, Ny. Esther was born in 1848. She died in 1931.

(3) AMELIA BOYDEN was born on 10 May 1849.

(4) AVIS ARLINA BOYDEN was born on 4 Sep 1850. Avis died on 18 Sep 1862. Avis was buried in Heady's Corner Cemetery, Plymouth, NY.

(5) MURRAY B. BOYDEN was born on 14 Sep 1853 in Plymouth, NY. He died on 14 Feb 1914 in Smyrna, NY. The cause of death was cerebral hemmorrage. He was buried on 17 Feb 1914 in Sherburne West Hill Cemetery, NY.
Murray married (a) ANN ELIZABETH FRINK about 1877. Ann was born on 23 Oct 1861. She died on 6 Mar 1878. She was buried in Frink Cemetery, North Pharsalia, NY. Murray married (b) HATTIE A. BROWN daughter of Erasmus D. Brown and Lana about 1879. Hattie was born in 1862. She died in 1898. Murray married (c) CARMENIA WHITE on 25 Jan 1899 in Norwich, NY. Carmenia was born in Pharsalia, NY. It’s unknown when she died. Murray married (d) MARY COOPER in 1899/1900. Mary was born in Nov 1863. She died in 1955.

(6) ELLEN BOYDEN was born on 11 Aug 1859. Ellen married ____ Glynn.

(7) ROSALEE BOYDEN was born on 20 Apr 1862. She died on 1 Jun 1862. She was buried in Heady's Corner Cemetery, Plymouth, NY.

(8) MARY J. BOYDEN was born on 24 Jun 1863 in NY. Mary married BURDETTE FRANKLIN about 1881. Burdette was born in 1861 in NY.

After his first wife passed away BRADFORD BOYDEN married (2) LUCETTA A. PHILLIPS, daughter of Nelson Phillips and Emily _____. Lucetta was born in Apr 1847.

They had the following children:

(9) AGNES D. BOYDEN was born on 2 Dec 1866.

(10) BRADFORD A. BOYDEN JR. was born on 22 May 1869. He died on 10 Sep 1871.

No record has been found as to what happened to Bradford's second wife and the children from that marriage but for the death of Bradford Jr. in 1871. They do not appear to have continued living on the farm with Zanoni and his full siblings.

Please let me know if you have a connection to this line or are interested in exchanging information.

Neil
Re: Walter Brittan Boyden

I just put out a posting for James Brittan who married Elizabeth Boyden 04 Jun 1766 in Over, Cambridgeshire. They could be ancestors to Walter. Try looking in Over or Downham, Cambridgeshire. Go to the CFHS website & see if there is anything on him in their searchable databases. Regards, Chris Maslen

Isaac & Laura [Barton] Boyden of Indiana

I am searching for information regarding Isaac and Laura [Barton] Boyden. Isaac is shown on the census to have been born in IA, but was in Indiana at age 6 and most likely lived there until his death.

Isaac and Laura had a set of four sisters with the last name Brainard living with them in 1900: Pearl (b. IN), Georgia (b. MT), Jessie (b. IL) and Zillah/Zellah/Drewzellah (b. MT). In 1910 I found Georgie and Zillah still living with the Boyden's and by 1920 Zillah was listed as Drezellah Englerth, a widow, and living with Laura Boyden (widow) and her daughter Sara Englerth.

The girls are listed on the 1900 census as neices, and as far as I know Isaac had three sisters that I know of, Emely, Sarah and Nora. To date I've not found anything definitive to show whose children they are.

Any help would be appreciated.

Hi, my grandfather is Bernard Harry Eric Boyden, born in Folkestone but moved to Ashford. I think it is highly likely that that we are talking about the same person as there were few Boydens in the area at the time. I have lots of informtion if you would like to email me
Catherine Bentley
