Hello,
I know this post is 12 years old but here it is anyway.
My grandfather is Robert Boykin, youngest child of John Wesley. As the story goes, JW died before my g-father was born and that was 1894. Narcissus Ann died a couple of years later.
Rebecca died around 1974 in Snyder, TX. Oddly enough, she married a second time to a man named Boykin (no relation).
I’ve also never been able to find anything on JW. I’d always heard that he came to Texas from Mississippi.
Kerrell Boykin

Frank Boykin celebrates his 77th Birthday, 1962

From the Mobile, Alabama Newspaper:

Thu., Feb. 22, 1962

WASHINGTON His friends expressed their love Wednesday for Rep. Frank Boykin of Alabama. President Kennedy described him as one whose blithe spirit and warm heart are legendary.

The President used these words in a telegram read at a birthday party for the 77-year-old Democratic congressman, whose slogan is Everything is made for love. ...

Boykin, thanking his friends, ended on a typical Boykin note:

If you dont think you can get to Heaven, come to Mobile.

Not my line, just sharing.

Dante,

I responded to one of the queries to your e-mail. I don't have any records but I know the Univerity of South Carolina does, The Alabama Archives and the University of Alabama do having been to these places.

I think my great, great, great grandfather, James Boykin inherited some of Elizabeth's slaves.

James was a soldier in both the Mexican War and the Civil War. He would have taken his personal man with him I am sure. Burwell was in the Revolutionary War and he would have had his assistant with him too.

If it makes you feel any better your family as well as so many others were a terribly important part of the settling of our country. Thank you for that and I am so sorry it was under such terrible circumstances.

Helen

Hi I am the great, great, great, great, great grandaughter of Burwell and Elizabeth Whitaker Boykin. I have just begun to question my roots and how my family who held honor to the highest account could also have held slaves.

I can help a little. I have read a transcript of Burwell's will. For what it is worth he expressly requested the slave families not be split up. If I remember he names the slaves specifically.

As for Stephen D. Miller he is Mary Boykin Miller Chesnut's father. He left South Carolina with 4 or 5 of Mary's Uncles, her Aunt Elizabeth Boykin Hunter and their respective families and slaves. All of them were classic pioneers. If you are related to those slave families you should know that they were some of the first Americans to settle the state of Alabama. The Creek Indians, who took scalps by the way, still resided in the eastern part of the state. They lived, black and white, in log cabins in those early years.

Try reading Mary Chestnut's diary or better yet Susan Mulenfeld's biography on Mary Chesnut. It may be painful but it is really revealing about the lives of the people caught up in that terrible time.

Justice was served. The entire family was bankrupt after the civil war and the plantaions M.C. describes have return to the soil. There is nothing left to remember them by. The land they lived on was beautiful though in a haunted kind of way.

Re: Line of Edward Boykin 1650 Isle of Wight Co. Virginia

Hi,

I am also directly descended from the Edward Boykin that came to Isle of Wight Co., Virginia in 1650. My g-grandmother was Roselean Boykin Williams, who was born in Missippi in 1852. Her father was Rowell Boykin. I don't have the Boykin genealogy in front of me, but Soloman Boykin was one of my however many times g-grandfathers. A part of the Boykin family came to Texas after The War Between The States. A number of them settled in Leon Co., Texas, and there are a number of them still there. My Williams family came to The Republic of Texas, somewhere between 1832 and 1837 from Ohio. The Williams family came to what would become the Colony of Rhode Island in the 1600's. My g-grandfather Cyrus Williams married Roselean Boykin in Leon Co., Texas in 1877. He owned alot of land in Leon, Limestone, and Freestone Counties in Texas. Roselean died in 1914, and Cyrus Williams was born in Ohio in 1832 and died in Donie, Freestone County, Texas in 1916. They are buried in Post Oak Cemetery which is about 5 miles from Donie, Texas. Most of the rest of my family is also buried in Post Oak. Cyrus and his older brother Jeremiah Williams fought in the War with CO. C 20th Texas Calvary, CSA. There were a number of men who were born in Indiana that were also in CO C, 20th Texas Calvary, CSA. This really makes you see the point of families that fought against each other during the War. I will have to look at my Boykin genealogy, to be able to trace my Boykin family from Edward and Soloman Boykin to my g-grandmother Roselean Boykin Williams. My first cousin Johnny Williams was diagnosed as having hemachromatosis, and the rest of my family carries the gene for that disease. I realized that we got the gene from Roselean, after about 3 or 4 other people in Leon County that were related to the Boykins, also were diagnosed with this blood disorder. I think that it would be safe to say that Roselean probably died from this blood disorder. They didn't know anything about hemachromatosis back then, and if left untreated you will usually die from it in your mid fiftys. Today it is easily treated, if you go to the doctor in time. I read in a science journal that the gene for hemachromatosis occured as a mutation in one man about 25,000 to 30,000 years ago, and everyone who carries this gene, is descended from that one man. Scientist are studying this mutation in order to learn more about genes and mutations.
Your Fellow Cousin,
Roger Williams

From what I have been able to determine, Soloman Boykin was Maj Francis Boykin's Father. So, Soloman Jr and Francis were brothers. Francis married Catherine Whitacker

As for military service, my G,G,G,G Grandfather Major Francis Boykin was a revolutionary war veteran and served at Ft Moultrie SC among other places. One of his sons, James William Boykin (my G,G,G Grandfather), served in the war of 1812.

By the way Edward Boykin Sr's father was named Thomas Boykin born in 1620 in Charing Cross, UK.

It took a lot of time, but finally the pieces fell into place. Good luck.

I can find NO info relating to these two so if anyone knows where I could start it would be much appreciated. Btw, I know Cari Died in Childress, TX and I would assume Walter did as well since their children are all from there. WJ Boykin and Billy Jean Boykin Hassell died in 2001, and Lela Mae died in 2003.
