I've been busy with other lines but would like to do more on Boylen; other than my immediate family, you're kind of my source for all things Boylen.

I've put my gedcom online - maybe something there to help you.

Del

http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?db=delgroves
Is anyone still researching the Boylen/Boilen/Boilon's of Barbour Co., West Virginia?

Most Boylen's are descended from Abner Boilen and his wife Margaret Glascock. Although, it is believed that Abner had a brother Thomas Boilon who married Nancy McNamer that lived in Gilmer Co., Virginia/West Virginia.

Would love to hear from other researchers or cousins.

Crystal (Boylen) Boggs

Hi,

You wouldn't happen to have any info on a Levi or Louis/Lewis Kittle who married Susannah Boilen/Boylen would you. I don't have too much on them other than a marriage record and a census for 1880 of Taylor Co., West Virginia. Children listed were Ida A., Gilbert R. and Austin M.

Any of this familiar???
Crystal (Boylen) Boggs

Hello,

I have some of your family in my file. I had found a couple of obituaries in Georgia I believe and linked them back to West Virginia along with info from I guess a cousin of yours trying to locate family from Tandy's line.

Here's what I have:
1.) Walter D. Boylen (sp: Janet Griggs)
2) Tandy Boylen (sp: Lorraine Keister)
3) Spencer Boylen (sp: Leanne Wells)

Funny thing is Spencer and Leanne are buried in the old section of the Mt. Vernon Church Cemetery near Philippi right next to his mother Sally or Sarah. I don't know why she wasn't buried with her husband Daniel Boylen. He's buried in Taylor Drain Cemetery.

Any way, Spencer is the brother of my 2nd great-grandfather, James Perry Boylen. He was married to Cordelia Cross. Just about all of their family was born, lived and raised in the Barbour Co., West Virginia area.

I just love it when I find a new cousin :-)

Crystal (Boylen) Boggs

Come visit our Boylen site:
http://www.ncweb.com/~cboggs/index.html

I realize your post is from years ago, but I just came across it as I was finishing up the Harlan line and thought I'd write, just in case my data is helpful. I show your Robert W. Boylen born to my Ethel Eleanor Harlan 9/27/1922 in San Francisco, but I show Ethel's parents are Laura Frances Ellis (my line) born in California and Wesley Harlan, born in Missouri (I believe he died about 1904-1905 in SF). Ethel's mother remarried Cuthbert Turnbull about 1907 and he died in 1914. The 1930 census shows your Robert W. Harlan living with his grandmother (my Laura Frances (nee Ellis) Harlan) with his father noted as born in Idaho (but I've yet to find either parent in the 1930 census). Of note, this same census records Laura's children's father as being bown in Iowa (unlike earlier censuses that note Missouri which I believe is correct) and notes Eileen as the mother of Robert, not Ethel (which I believe is an error given her age and she is noted as single in this census). The CA Birth Index indicates another Boylen (a male) was born in SF 6/11/1936 to maiden name Harlan, though I have nothing else on this particular record. I show Mrs. Ethel Boylen in SF as late at 1940 (voter registration), but no death records or anything else for her or her husband...yet. I'm happy to share any data I have that may be of help to you (and I welcome corrections too :). According to FMT, we'd be 6th cousins...a bit more like a family twig than a branch, but related just the same!

She gave me the name of his son so I could call to mark this name off my list as well. After calling....it turns ou t this number was the home of my REAL LIFE BLOOD HALF BROTHER (Same Boylen Dad)!!!! Long story short, I have since found 4 brothers & sisters, a nephew and a couple of other people (which I have since met with). I still have not tried to tie them in to the big picture yet...But I know those guys origonated in the Chicago area. My dad died in Florida before I met him.

Good to hear from you!!!

Thanks for the tip - I see some new things I don't have.

I hope to have some new infor - I discovered a cousin still living who is the son of Clifford Boylen - which is Lemuel D. Boylen's half brother.

Funny thing is I remember him when he used to come and preach at our church up here in northeast Ohio in the 1970's and early 1980's. From what I hear he is retired now still living in the Grafton, WV area. I knew he was related but I had forgotten about until a few months ago when I found some records.

It would be very exciting for all of us if he had a picture of Daniel Boylen - not to mention any pictures of Daniel's wives and many children such as Lemuel or Clifford.

Here's my new email - cboggs192@windstream.net

Crystal

My father is Robert Wesley Boylen born in Ca on Sept. 27, 1922. His father is Joseph Boylen born in Brooklyn, NY, his mother is Ethel Harlen born in Susanville, CA. Her parents are Tillie (Tilly) and George Harlen of MO. My father was married 3 times. First wife is Della Joy, and they had a girl named Diane Joy in 1946 in CA. I was wondering if there is anyone out there who may have a connection to any of the above family. I have never meet my oldest sister and would like to possible meet.

Boylen of Boston, MA from Ireland?

I know this is a long shot but I thought it might still be worth a try. I'm trying to trace a line of Boylen's that came to the U.S. (Boston) during the famine. My direct ancestor is George William Boylen born in April 1835 somewhere in Ireland. His sisters Bridget (born 1845 in Ireland) and Grace would also settle in Boston. His parents are Matthew Boylen and Julia Brady (I have no birth dates etc, just names for both of his parents). I can find no records indicating that Matthew or Julia came to the US. George was in the US by September 10, 1858 due to birth records for his oldest son, George William (also). He married his wife Margaret Kellet (born 1835 in Ireland) on October 14, 1860 in Boston. (though on their son's birth certifcate in 1858 she is already listed as Margaret Boylen - perhaps they married in Ireland before their arrival?).

I have looked on grave stones, in parish records, and asked now dead relatives what county but have had no luck for years. Recently, I was in Dublin and stopped by the library on a whim when I heard about the geneological service. After searching a database (I didnt write the name down, unfortunately) of property listings in Ireland in the mid-1800's the researcher thought there was a high liklihood the family came from County Cavan. There was also a small chance that the family came from other counties (but all were northern and in close proximity to Cavan). Also, he said it was more than likely that when they lived in Ireland the name was spelled with an A (Boylan).

Like I said I know its a shot in the dark but it can't hurt to try. Do these names look familiar to anyone? Does anyone have any tips for how I can build upon my research. Any information/help would be greatly appreciated!

Michael Boylen

James Boylen

This is the obituary of Anthony Burns, my gr gr grandfather, who died on Oct 31, 1897, in Oswego, NY:

"In this city, October 31st, 1897, Anthony Burns, aged 86 years.

Funeral from the residence of his daughter, Mrs. James BOYLEN. No. 164 West Seventh between Oneida and Mohawk streets, Tuesday at 9 a.m. and from St. Paul's church at 9:30. Friends are invited."

I believe that "Mrs. James Boylen" was Agnes Burns. Now comes the tricky part! I think (and don't hold me to it) that Agnes was the sister of Patrick Burns, who is my great grandfather.

Is anyone familiar with any Boylen's that lived in Oswego, NY around the late 1890's? Some handwritten "family trees" list Agnes as being Burns BOYLAND Upcraft. Are you totally confused yet, as I certainly am!

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Kathy
California

My great grandfather who was the name sake was not portly, but it must have been in his genes as the family is now and has been for the last few generations... Just well bred as someone told me once. We went to Ireland in 99 and visited Cavan and the graveyard where supposedly there was family, but you truely never know... :) Thanks for the information though...
Jen

I have indeed traced our lineage for a many years. The Boylen's from Wisconsin that you speak of have most probably come from County Galway. My gran once spoke of a family by that name that her father would often have a run in with. Seems that the lad's and lass's of the clan were a might bit portly if we could say, and had a habit of stealin the pies from the sill, if you know what I mean. My uncle later told me of a lad he once chumed with from that clan who later went on to Wisconsin in the US.
