Hi Don:

I have been searching for information on my grandmother's cousin and beloved "adopted sister" Esther Kemp (Saunders) Campbell (who I believe was the second wife of your grandfather, patent attorney Donald Campbell.)

"Aunt" Esther was born in Nassau, Bahamas and moved to Manhattan with my grandmother (Margaret/Madge Saunders Morley) in the early 1900s. Esther had been "adopted" by Madge's parents (her mother's sister) because her own mother had passed away when she was quite young. My grandmother was very fond of Esther, and I believe she frequently visited Esther and Donald in White Plains/Scarsdale (?) in the 1940s and 1950s.

Do you have information on Donald and Esther you could share with me? I have had a challenging time finding anything about them - birth dates, death dates, marriage dates. Just a mention of them in the 1930 census.

Many, many thanks.
Hi there,

Here is what I have, in part.

1) Benjamin Hallowell was the Crown's Customs Agent in Boston in the 1770s.
He had 2 sons, Ward Nicholas and Benjamin.

Ward Nicholas took his mother surname to inherit from a rich uncle and became WNH Boytlston.

He married Anne Molineux (oy Molyneux) the daughter of William Molineux who was an ardent patriot. see Molineux link at (boston1775 dot blogspot dot com). Also see a new book, Cradle of Violence about pre Revolutionary War Boston.

WNHB and Anne had a son WNB who was sent to see with his unle Benjamin Hallowell 2nd. He married Mary Elizabeth Bentham in Charleston, SC. His father was quite unhappy with that and left him money if he promised never to set foot in Massachusetts.

He had 2 sons, Nicholas (maybe Ward Nicholas) and Henry. I come from Henry's line. He was a Doctor in Charleston. His son Robert Bentham Boylston was an attorney, served in the SC legislature and congress and was a Colonel in the CSA during the War between the States. RBBs brother was at the shelling of Fort Sumter at the start of the war.

My dad knew all this but never spoke about it. I only had the faintest clues which I would knot have gotten had I not gone to grad school at the U of SC in Columbia SC.

Hope this all helps.

Don

Greetings,

John Boylston Campbell is/was my father (now deceased). His mother was Augusta Eccleston Boylston. AE's mother was Augusta Eccleston Shoemaker. AE's father was William Cloud Boylston. After he died, AE Shoemaker remarried S Montgomery Roosevelt.

AEB was indeed the actress. The divorce from Donald was amicable as he was a patent attorney and she the actress. The chemistry was not of the best. AEB died shortly before I was born but my oldest sister remebers visiting her in NYC.

We are short of info on her acting career, though. We would love to learn more. I understand whe was in a show that was raided by the police!

All the best,

Don

In the fall of 1776 salt riots erupted in Maryland. In 1777, when Thomas Boylston of Boston refused to sell at reasonable rates, a crowd of North End women took what they needed by force while a concourse of men stood amazed, silent spectators of the whold transaction, for these were not "your Maggys but reputable Clean drest Women."

I am not related to this person, just passing on this information, which comes from a book titled "A Restless People: Americans in Rebellion 1770-1787" by Oscar and Lilian Handlin.
What information do you have on Nicholas Boylston and Nicholas Hallowell Boylston. I know the famous Nicholas Boylston was very prominent in Boston, but I keep getting conflicting info on Nicholas Hallowell Boylston. My line is Nicholas Boylston born in 1802 who was living in Charleston, SC when he married Catherine Farmer. The info I have is that he was the son of Nicholas Hallowell Boylston, born 1771, who married Mary Bentham. His father was Ward Nicholas Hall, whose mother was Mary Boylston, who married Benjamin Hollowell. She had her son's name changed to Boylston to preserve the family name. Any light you can shed on this would be appreciated

Nancy, yes that was Zabdiel Boylston of Boston, MA, son of Thomas Boylston and Mary Gardner. (His sister, Abigail, married Ebenezer Brooks and was grandaunt to President John Adams.) In "Watertown Genealogies," it says Dr. Zabdiel Boylston's life was threatened by the populace who were frightened about the concept of innoculation. He was a brave fellow to do what he did.

I have been doing research on the Boylston-Adams-Hall mariages, along with another cousin. Our line shares President Adams. Is that the same as yours? It was a John Adams who married Susanna Boylston in 1734 that led to the President John Adams and his son Quincy. Susanna's father was Peter Boylston. We have a few generations back from him to Henry Boylston of London.

Nancy: Thanks for your help. Although not directly on point (yet) I will continue my efforts and keep you informed. My mother (Ruth Elinor Boylston) married a surgeon (Edward Woodruff Gibbs) and moved to Billings,Montana after WWII. Her brother (my uncle), Arthur Boylston, also a physician, settled in Portland, Oregon. His son (my cousin), also a physician (bored yet?) developed the anti-rejection drugs for kidney transplants and resides in Leeds, England. I have settled in the Seattle area and practice law here. Will try to keep you informed and again, thanks for the reply and information.

All my info is Boston and NH stuff and much earlier. Email me at nancytodd@att.net I'll be looking for those steam boilers. My ancestor, Edward Boylston, ran a newspaper in Amherst NH. His house is still there. The family also owned property in Boston along what is now Boylston St.(runs along the common) His son Edward Boylston Eaton was active in timber and shipping this all back in the days of sail. It's not a common name. I live in Cincinnati. Where are you?

Nancy:
My mother was Ruth Elinor Boylston, born in Chicago (Winnetka), Illinois on 5/7/1914. She graduated from New Treer (spelling) HS and went on to Wellsley. Her Father was Arthur William Boylston and her mother was Orpha Estelle Wann. Her paternal grandfather was William Boylstron and paternal grandmother was Emma Louise Hahn. Mother's paternal great-grandfather was John Boylston and great-grandmother Alice Quinlan. At some point in the famil history, one of the ancestors founded the Boylston Steam Valve Company in Chicago. If you look in the boiler room of any "older" hotel, many have Boylston Steam valves. It is at this point that I am out of information. Should you have any helpful info, it would be appreciated. Thanks for your inquiry.

George Boylston, Barnwell County, SC

Though I am not of Boylston or Willis descent, I have connections with the Willis family of Williston, SC through my Johnston, Head, & Merritt lines, so I thought this information could be useful to others.

This information was compiled by Elizabeth Willis DeHuff prior to 1965. I have not verified any of this infomation.

Sarah Willis, daughter of Robert Willis and Keziah Boylston, married George Boylston (Boyleston, Boilstone, Boilston). Sarah was born about 1796 (1804 hand written above this.)

Their children were: 1) Robert Belton Boylston m. Winnifred Porter (part of this info. from LDS website) 2) Judson 3) Martha m. John Mixon 4) Antoinette m. Gus Weeks 5) Joanna m. James Fanning, her 1st cousin, son of James Patrick Fanning & Ellen Willis.

Sarah Willis Boylston had a brother, Elijah Willis, who never married. In his will at Barnwell County Courthouse, Book D, Vol. 2, Page 270, (1826-1856), George Boylston & Sarah, his wife, received part of the estate of Elijah Willis.

I believe that George may be the son of George Boylston & Alice Cloud.
