Craig, thank you for your reply. Do you know the history of where the Boynes came from in Ireland. I see you are in Dublin. Are there many Boynes in Dublin? Are there any from County Monoghan?
Regards and thank you,
Barbara

Hi Mary Jean,
Thanks, I did not know of a son named Thomas or any other children on this end. So they had one son Thomas who died around 5yrs of age. Then later had another son and named him also as Thomas? Am I correct?
I did happen to meet with some of the Tyers and Tyres in Lee in the last 3 years or so. Any info in particular on the Tyers for I have several generations on them. My e mail is: btyerjr (at) aim (dot) com. Communicating to other members was free on Ancestry but I guess not any more other then through this message board. I would not want to overwhelm this site with all the info I have.
Would you happen to have any more info on the Boyne side of the family?
Many thanks again,
Bob Tyer Jr

Dear Bob,
Thank you very much, I would very much like the information on the Tyers, that is what I am looking for.
You forgot that there was a first child of Lucy and Thomas and his name was also Thomas. He died I believe at age 5 or so. After Mary Alice came Florence who married Hollings Bridge and they had one son John. I'm not sure if it is Bridges or Bridge. John's whereabouts are unknown at present. Yes John is James Wellington, (my mistake). There are Tyers in Lee Mass. related to you.
With gratitude,
Mary Jean Thomas

Hello, Thank you for your reply!
Yes you are correct, the name changed after the trip from Ireland from Tyre to Tyer in the later 1850's or early 1860's.
Anyway it has been awhile since I posted that question. I would be Lucy Boyne's great grand nephew.
This is what I have on your side of the family:

Outlined Descendant Report for Lucy Elizabeth Tyer

..... 1 Lucy Elizabeth Tyer b: Aug 09, 1861 in Lee, MA, d: Sep 12, 1908 in Lee, MA

..... + Thomas Alexis Boyne b: Feb 15, 1858 in Bloomfield, New Jersey, m: Oct 13, 1887, d: Dec 09, 1911 in Lee, MA
........... 2 Josephine Frances Boyne b: Jun 03, 1895

........... + John Keenan

................. 3 John Keenan

................. 3 George Edwin Keenan

........... 2 Thomas Edmond Boyne b: May 28, 1897

........... + Cecilia Bridget Thomas b: Jan 04, 1900, m: Sep 26, 1923, d: Jan 1980 in Lee, MA

................. 3 Patricia Boyne

................. 3 Thomas J.
Maggie Hothersill married Martin d'Ouville. He was blind. He studied music at the Overbrook School for the Blind which is just outside Philadelphia. He was music director for St. Charles Bormeo Seminary. He also had a sister who was blind. Martin had a composition published (sheet music). There were 2 more siblings, I think and their father was a teacher of the French Language. I have more details if you haven't already gotten this information since this was posted in 2002.

James moved to York, UK around the time of the famine and later married Jane Durkin from Co Mayo. I have tried various websites but have been unable to find any Irish records.

Greetings, Dave - and to anyone called Boyne, particularly with a connection to Co Meath!
My GGGrandfather,John Boyne (d.1860 in Lancashire, England) was probably born in Ireland. I can find no record of his marriage in England, and of his known children, the two elder sons were also born in Ireland. These sons were Patrick (born c1844) and John (b. c 1851). John Boyne had therefore presumably grown up in Ireland and married there sometime in the early 1840s (though it may have been earlier), and come to Lancashire with his family sometime between 1851 and 1855, as part of the huge wave of emigration from Ireland which followed the great famine of 1845-6. He worked as a labourer. His wife’s name was Rose (maiden name unknown at present), and she lived on in Prescot until her death in 1901 at the (given) age of 84. A census record shows that she ws born in County Meath. Possibly her husband was too. So I'd be grateful for any information on likely townlands in Meath for this John Boyne to have come from, or any indication of the location of his marriage to Rose (born c1817 in Co Meath)
Best Wishes,
Chris Boyne

Hi Susan

I'm Dave Boyne from Meath. I hope you read this, I know its 6 years late. Fair play to you for discovering that much, Meath is a very small place and Boyne is not that common a name here. I know that my great, great grandfathers family had 6 brothers in the village of Kildalkey. Nobody knows what happened to them, but only one stayed in Ireland. That would have been around the early 1800's before the famine of 1845. I'll try to find out more

Dave

Trying to find information on Eleanor Boyne, whose father was Thomas. I have been told she might have been born in Ireland. Eleanor married William Scally on January 9, 1893 at Loughglynn (Gortaganny) Roman Catholic Church in Roscommon, Ireland.I know her father's name was Thomas from the marriage information. The farm they lived on was in Carrowbehy, Ireland.

They had four children: Thomas (1893), Thady, Anne and Michael. My grandfather was Thomas. I know Eleanor died some time between 1901-1903, because William remarried a Mary Ann Flanagan in 1904 and had three more sons. I have not been able to find any information on her death.

Seeking information on the Thomas Boyne Family.

I have a James Boyne married to a great aunt Eleanor Beattie born 1877 in Glasgow. They had 5 children: James, Alexander, Fred, Agnes and _____? These were :"very bonny" children with red hair and brown eyes according to my grandmother Agnes Beattie McPherson (their aunt) who emigrated to Canada in 1911. I am not sure how common the name Boyne might be -- certainly I have never encountered it on this side of the Atlantic. The only further information I could give you on this would be on the genealogy of the Beatties. Cheers. Holly
My great, great grandfather was Patrick Boyne born in Ireland abt 1822. Patrick married Margaret (last name unknown) she was born in Ireland abt 1830. Patrick and Margaret moved to England where all of their children were born, they are:

Mary (abt. 1856),
Patrick (March 1857),
John (abt. 1861),
Margaret (abt. 1864)
Peter, my great grandfather (April 1865).

The father Patrick moved to the United States first before having his family come over. I have a copy of the ship manifest showing Margaret and her 5 small children sailing to America on the SS Pennsylvania in 1869. Once in the states they took up residence in Philadelphia.
Glad to be of help

You're right, it is kinda complicated.

In Northern Ireland, there is only about 100,000 people. It is not the majority wish of the people to remain under British rule. There are only about 40,000 people who want to remain British, mainly because they are third or fourth generation British from the original invading colonists.

The native Irish who live in "Northern Ireland", are mainly Catholic. The ex-pat British are Protestant. They Irish are denied the right to speak Gaelic, and until the last few years, could not join the police. The British, referred to as Unionists, or Loyalists, have all the best jobs and keep the native Irish down

Its sad to see that this goes on even to this day, and that a responsible country such as Britian supports the bigotry of a few people.

I dont know if you've heard of the IRA, (Irish Republican Army), but this is an organisation that the Catholics formed to try to free themselves from Britian. Check out "euronews.com", there is some very interesting developments happening at the moment with Northern Ireland. The IRA have just de-commishioned their weapons in an effort to bring peace to the region in return for Britian withdrawing its troops.

If John Boyne's mother was from the British side, then she would most certainly have been a native Irish Catholic to marry a man from the native Irish side. It would not have been odd at all, as there would have been little difference between them. Try looking up some British records for Births, Deaths and Marraiges for her. There are probably no records for John on the "Free State" side, as the country was in turmoil with a civil war after 1921. The counties of "Northern Ireland" are:

Derry, Antrim, Down, Armagh, Fermamagh, Tyrone

Im sure you can find something on the net. Let me know, and dont forget to check out euronews

Ah, Mick, thanks for the education. It is crystal clear now. I appreciate the help. I had not heard the term "Irish Free State" before it started showing up in the census records. It confused me.

May I ask, just of my own curiosity (and again, coming from ignorance, so forgive me), is it the majority wish of the people of Northern Ireland to remain under British rule? Or is it the British who need to hold onto their control of that one disjointed area (and if so, why)?

The issue probably isn't as black and white as my questions would imply, but it is an important distinction. I wonder how odd it was to have a gal from the British side marry a guy from the Irish side, relating it back to the family I am researching.

Thank you again, for taking the time to bring me up to speed. One day, I'll have an opportunity to visit Ireland, and I look forward to it. They have a rich history and proud heritage, don't they? In many ways, their history is similar to our own.

hello

just saw your message, i might have some useful information for you

The name Boyne hails from Ireland, but its not very common. Most Boynes are found in counties Meath or Roscommon, and some in Dublin

Regarding the difference between the "Irish Free State" and "Northern Ireland", all of Ireland was occupied by Britian for hundreds of years. We native Irish were always trying to free ourselves from British rule, and finally in 1921, we managed to kick them out of every part of the country except one (War of Independance, 1916-1921). This was "Northern Ireland". It is only a tiny area in the top north-east corner of the island. The first world war was under way at the time and both ourselves and Britian were short of men, so we called a truce. The "Irish Free State" was the area unoccupied by Britian, and is now totally independant, and "Northern Ireland" unfortunately remains under British rule to this day. Various attempts have been made by the government (and others!!!) to get back northern ireland, but no luck so far.

If John Boyne's father was born in the "Irish Free State", then he would only have been a child in 1930 and your census info is no good. He was probably still here in Ireland until the start of the Second world war, likewise for Mellie

BOYNE family of MN

Greetings, Board. I'm working on the family history for a friend of mine. Her Boyne relatives (headed by John Boyne) came to MN from Canada.

John, and his wife (Eleanor "Mellie"), both listed their parents as having come originally from Ireland.

Here are my questions:

1. Does anyone have any information on the BOYNE family of Stillwater, MN? (I have the information from Census 1900 through 1930). I'm looking for John and Mellie's parents.

2. The unnamed father was born in "Irish Free State" while the mother was listed from "Northern Ireland" ... what is the difference (please pardon my ignorance). I thought Northern Ireland was fighting for independence, so are not Irish Free State and Northern Ireland one and the same? If so, why the distinction? Just in need of education, so thanks in advance for any enlightenment.

Boyne

Trying to find information on Eleanor Boyne, whose father was Thomas. I have been told she might have been born in Scotland. Eleanor married William Scally on January 9, 1893 at Loughglynn (Gortaganny) Roman Catholic Church in Roscommon, Ireland. The farm they lived on was in Carrowbehy, Ireland.

They had three children: Thomas (1893), Thady, Anne and Michael. My grandfather was Thomas. I know she died some time between 1901-1903, because William remarried a Mary Ann Flanagan. We find no record of her death anywhere.

Any information on Eleanor or Thomas Boyne would be very helpful. We no information on the family.

Re: Family crest (irish)

Greetings to Chris Boyne from another Chris Boyne!
There probably is no 'crest' associated with "the Irish family of Boyne" for two good reasons: (1) very few families - particularly Irish ones - have ever had any sort of formal recognised symbol or arms associated with their family, and (2) there is probably no such thing as 'the' Boyne family. Instead, there are a lot of people (relatively speaking) who have used or been given this name or some variant of it, but who may have no blood ties of any kind.
Family crests 'associated' with surnames are largely a 20th Century marketing invention.
...and a word of warning: anyone called Boyne buying a 'Boyne' coat of arms or family crest from a website or commercial 'heraldry' company is likely to be sold something that was granted (uniquely and exclusively) to a long-dead Scotsman (possibly named Boyne but more likely holding the lairdship of the lands around Aboyne in Scotland), not an Irishman, and almost cerainly not a relative!

There are several lines of Boynes in the USA,
some came here via New Orleans, others via
NYC, others apparently via Canada. My line
came to Columbia County, NY, starting with a
Barney Boyne who married Bridget Byron in the
mid 1850's. Their children were James, John,
William, and Michael. James John settled
in Catskill Village, Greene County, NY; William
and Michael in Philmont, Columbia County, NY.

I would be willing to share information with
anyone interested, and am interested in any
information anyone might have, particularly
on Barney Boyne.

Bob: I've been offline for a long time, and
just saw this response. I don't know how to reply by email from these forums.

Your Laura is one of three daughters of my William (I'm descended from the only son,
Clarence). Laura married Frank B. Walker...

Anyway, all I still have is the basic details
for William and his father Barney. You can e-mail me at aboyne@earthlink.net.

Art

Bob: Unfortunately, I don't have much info on Bridget Byron. She was born in Ireland sometime between 1826 and 1830 (dates differ on the U.S. Census records), coming to Columbia County, NY somewhere around 1840. She married Barney Boyne in the early 1850's; later married John Lawler between 1860 and 1865. He died before 1870, and she then lived with one of her sons, surviving until after 1905.

Art

I just noticed this message string and the names *REALLY* intrigue me, as my great-great-grandfather's name was Barney Boyne from Columbia County, NY. I'm descended from him through his son William Boyne of Columbia and Renssalaer counties.

Is there any relationship here?
