John Bozanic Jr.
HUNTINGTON BEACH, Calif. — John Bozanic Jr., 66, the son of the late John Bozanic and Martha Durkota, passed away of colon cancer on Jan. 8, 1999, in Huntington Beach, Calif.
John, a retired engineer, was born in Worcester, N.Y., on May 5, 1932, and graduated from Worcester Central School in 1949. After serving four years in the Air Force, John attended the University of Miami. Upon graduating in 1958, with a degree in electrical engineering, John took a job with North American Aviation in Southern California. He remained in California and continued to work in the field up until his retirement just a year ago.
A founder of the University of Miami Alumni Association of Southern California, John served as its first president, and remained an active member. Besides being dedicated to his family and the University of Miami, John served on many community boards, including HUD, Huntington Beach Parks and Recreation, Boy Scouts, California Coastal Commission, Community Services Commission, Ocean View and Huntington Beach Union High School.
John is survived by his wife of 44 years, Maxine; two sons, Jeffrey and his wife, Rebecca, and Scott and his wife, Terry; two daughters, Debra Schecter and Lisa Bozanic; seven grandchildren; three brothers, Larry of Westland, Mich., George of Lumberton, Miss., and Donald of Hedgesville, W.Va.; seven sisters, Helen Teller of Worcester, N.Y., Anne Jorgensen of Zephyrhills, Fla., Zita Wenzel of Tavares, Fla., Vera Peters of Springfield, Va., Emily Lilly of Deerfield Beach, Fla., Jeanette Boxill of Chapel Hill, N.C., and Mary Bozanic of Santa Monica, Calif.; and 37 nieces and nephews.
A "celebration of his life" was held on Jan. 11, 1999, at the National Sports Grill in Santa Ana, Calif., where more than 150 friends and relatives, nearly all wearing University of Miami garb, gathered to share their memories of John.
In recognition of his love and dedication to the University of Miami, the Alumni Association has established a scholarship fund in his name.
